Episode 08

Uncle Gao.

Uncle Zhao. Junior Uncle Shen.

Chengling, is everything alright?

You'll stay at Yueyang Sect from now on.

Chengling, do you have any illnesses?

Uncle Gao, none.

Why's your body so weak?

Big Bro, he's young.

He can be trained.

He's not young.

Jianghu says Mirror Lake is erased.

As Chengling survived, they're wrong.

Chengling, if you can't carry your dad's legacy,

Zhang family will have no successor.

Give me the Glazed Armour.

Come on.

Big Bro, Chengling lost memory due to trauma.

Discuss Glazed Armour later.

What 'later'?

Glazed Armour overshadows Yusen's and our lives.

Yusen barely managed Chengling's escape

to bring Glazed Armour news!

Chengling, you'd let your kin die for nothing?

How often will I say it?

I know nothing of Glazed Armour!

Stop it!

Say where Glazed Armour is.

Chengling, don't fear.

Tell us!

Cheng Ling. I understand.

Your dad hadn't interacted with us for years

so you distrust us.

But who else can you trust?

You've no choice, kid!

Big Bro, he doesn't get it.

We can teach him slowly.

I lack patience to coax you.

If you delay handing it over,

more in Jianghu will suffer, do you know?

I don't know!

- I... - Big Brother!

Chengling.

Big Bro, don't be angry.

Talk about Glazed Armor next time?

You may go.

Go quickly.

Go.

You and Yusen were at odds for years.

But the kid knows nothing.

Shut up!

You're muddled.

Big Bro's heartbroken about Yusen. Why say that?

Help me fix it. I pitied the kid.

He has to live here.

Muddled again.

Even if Big Bro is angry, will he hurt a kid?

You've underrated Big Bro's generosity.

Brother, I was in an awkward spot.

You paid for me, a stranger.

I feel apologetic.

I stay close by.

Can you wait?

I'll be back soon.

It's our fate to meet.

It's just money.

If it brings me a new pal, isn't it better?

I'm Zhou Xu. May I know your name?

I'm Cao Weining

of Cool Breeze Sword Sect.

Your Sect carefully selects students.

They're elegant, comely, literate, well-trained.

I see it's true.

You overrate me.

I'm worst in my sect.

Don't say that.

It's our fate to meet.

If you like, drink and chat.

- Come on. - Okay.

Bro Zhou, you're candid. I'm impressed.

Bro Zhou, drink.

Here.

Here, cheers.

Kick him out for me.

- He'll get me into Yueyang Sect. - Eat and drink freely.

Xiang. Find Fang Buzhi!

Fang Buzhi?

His wugong is good.

A'Xiang is a girl...

You look down on girls?

Girls are great.

How about...I go with you?

Many people are outside.

Bro Zhou, excuse me.

May I know where you will be staying?

I'll visit to buy you a meal.

Making friends is mostly rapport.

Leave it.

Zhao Jing invited us.

Of course we'll visit Yueyang Sect.

If you can't find my pouch, don't come back.

As usual, you want my help.

Master Cao. Please go and notify Yueyang Sect.

I hope you find your pouch.

Alright. See you.

Cao whoever! Why follow me?

Cao Weining.

Who cares! You've no money for food?

Want a loan? Okay, 32% interest!

Deal?

I'm sorry. I was impolite.

Miss, come to Yueyang Sect about your Master's item.

I may relax if Five Lakes handles this.

You visit often?

You'd know good food places.

Since I do, give me a chance

I'll show you all the food.

I should take you home. They say I only like to eat.

On meeting you,

I found out someone more into eating than me.

Let's go.

Miss, this way.

The Leader of Gentle Wind Sword Sect

is a cunning old fox.

How's his fox den have a big rabbit?

Living long enough, you see strange things.

Like someone here.

He's cold and doesn't chat to his pal.

But he's warm and friendly

to a famed sect's disciple he just met.

I know you want news

of your disciple via that rabbit.

That kid's folly for Xiang annoys me.

Relax.

Xiang will play along to get into Yueyang Sect.

She'll check on your silly disciple.

Am I considerate?

You used Xiang's looks.

I won't stop her leaving when older, or she'll hate me.

Shameless.

It's for you and your disciple.

Why do I think that's not your real motive?

Don't you know? I'm called Well-doer Wen

because I feel uneasy

not helping people.

If I don't, I fall sick.

So I travel to aid people.

So you aid people for merit?

"I won't be a Buddha till Hell is empty." (= save everyone)

But in Yueyang, decent sects and heroes are everywhere.

Where are Hell's dwellers?

Bright and dark sides exist.

The worst demons pose as humans

and hide in crowds.

I'm here to expose them and destroy them.

A'Xu, does that gain me merit?

Unexpectedly you're a gentleman

seeking justice.

Not bad. Thanks go to my confidant.

Junior Zhang.

Junior, slow down.

I know the way to my room.

I'll go by myself.

I don't need your escort.

Won't do.

Master said someone must accompany you.

Yeah?

Am I a guest or a criminal?

- You... - What's wrong?

Xie Wuyang, why'd you argue?

Senior, I want to take him to the Student Compound.

But he rejects an escort.

I see. You may go.

Leave him to me.

Aye.

Chengling.

Yueyang got chaotic.

Dad worries.

Even I can't go out.

Did Dad's fierce words scare you?

You'll come to see that Dad

is cold outside, warm inside.

He's nice to us normally.

Chengling, Yueyang Sect is frugal,

not luxurious like your home.

[Pine Hall] So we'll house you here.

From now, tell me any problems.

Okay, I'm at fault.

You're not little.

You're an adult.

Senior, Cao Weining seeks you.

Okay, I got it.

Aye.

These boys are about your age.

From now on, train with them.

Everyone, come here.

This is Chengling.

Take care of him.

Alright, Senior.

Train here in future.

- Bet he can't take a hit. - Yeah.

A few hits will fell him.

Catching Zhang Buzhi needs time.

Yueyang is unsafe lately.

Miss Gu Xiang may feel uneasy outside.

Masters Zhou and Wen are Hero Zhao's pals.

They'll come here soon.

So...I think...

If you don't mind, can Miss Xiang stay here?

Since she's your...friend,

that's no problem.

Do you mind staying at my compound?

Thanks, Sister Xiaoling.

Thank you.

Good Sister, you're welcome.

Weining's friend is my friend.

Senior, Master wants you to prepare ritual items.

It's getting dark.

Why's he holding a rite?

What kind of rite?

Master will take Junior Zhang to Five Lakes Stele.

Okay.

Take Miss Gu to my compound.

Put her in the west wing.

Aye.

Sister, I'll go now.

Tell my Junior if you need anything.

Okay.

You can tell Weining too.

Candied hawthorn for sale.

Sirs, good day.

Welcome.

Brother Wen, take care.

What's wrong?

I have something to do.

We'll part here.

See you...

Wherever you go, I'll follow.

Won't you go fight evil and save Hell dwellers?

Hell had dwellers for years. There's no rush.

I don't get it.

Why keep following me?

Don't you let me?

Live as we want. Why so many questions?

I ask you.

Why keep following Chengling?

Yes. I've been stubborn.

I know you worry about Chengling.

I sent Xiang to check on him.

Those old foxes are clever.

They won't expose themselves yet.

Five Lakes isn't my only worry.

Many Jianghu groups eye Chengling.

I just talked to that waiter.

He told me there's a group of unruly martial artists.

They dress like feudal officials.

Who released lanterns in the still bright sky?

Sky Window is taking action in this area.

Those feudal officials are Sky Window.

- I'll check Yueyang Sect. - Master!

Master, lucky you didn't go far.

Lass, why back so soon?

It's fine. Just say it.

I got into Yueyang Sect.

I have urgent news.

Gao Chong is taking Little Idiot for a rite at 5-Lakes Stele.

I don't get it.

Night's coming. What rite?

At night...

Go back.

[ Five Lakes League - Stele ]

[ Lake of the Five Areas ]

our ancestors imitated 'Three Heroes' (Han Dynasty)

in a bamboo forest.

Becoming 5 sworn Brothers,

they aided each other.

They founded large sects.

Thus began Five Lakes League.

They built this Stele to tell descendants

that Five Lakes righteousness rules the League.

Kid, if you inherit your dad's position as Chief,

your name will also

[Zhang Yusen] be carved on this Stele.

You'll be respected by descendants.

Someone told me you're incapable of being Chief.

Someone also told me

you can't bear this duty.

They hope I'll find a top disciple

from Five Lakes to be Zhang family successor

on your behalf.

I disagreed.

No matter what, you're direct Zhang heir.

Uncle Gao, you're Chief.

I'll do as you decide.

Shan!

Yao Zhi!

- Master! - Master!

Chief Gao, we meet again.

Officer Han.

You use such a base trick?

You'd compel me?

Chief Gao, I'd like a peaceful resolution.

Hand me the Zhang orphan.

I'll release them. Or else...

Or else what?

Crossbows are national weapons!

No private use. Will Prince Jin revolt?

Chief Gao, don't be concerned with us.

Hand me the kid. He'll live.

Refuse and today marks your death day.

If you want Chengling,

kill me first!

Chief Gao, don't think I won't take action.

Sky Window knows all.

Even if I kill you all today,

I'll uncover the truth about Glazed Armour.

Damn it.

Where'd they come from?

What will you do? You're crazy?

Butt out.

Bows need reload time. First shot, I'll distract them.

As they reload, you grab the leader.

Won't do.

Swift crossbow arrows can't be fended off,

however good your wugong.

A gentleman dies for his soulmate.

So what if I risk it for you?

I'll distract the bowmen. You grab the leader.

Stop!

Still haven't freed them?

Release them.

Brothers, you're...

Chief Gao, don't be chummy.

Still not going? Waiting for a carriage?

Can't thank you enough. See you again.

Let's go.

Little Official, go with us.

Let our leader go!

Retreat!

Everyone, retreat!

These two won't hurt me.

You're right. I won't provoke your guys.

We'll send him back intact later.

Go! Mind your crossbows!

Wait for me.

Let's go.

A'Xu, you owe me today's favour.

Official, watch your eyes.

I captured you.

Why stare at him?

Chief.

Chief, it's really you.

Seeing 'Swift 9-Palace Steps', I thought I was mistaken.

Chief, why are you here?

Why no disguise?

How's your injury?

After years of hiding, I've had enough!

Ying, I'm sorry.

I knew you'd recognize me.

It was urgent.

Your men needed an explanation.

You saved my life.

I'll willingly risk everything at your command.

A'Xu, shall I go for a while?

I saw Sky Window's Trapped Sparrow and Drunken Dream.

I saw Yueyang Sect men

using Sky Window's secret code.

I thought they sought me

but they seek Glazed Armour.

Yes. Since news of Mirror Lake's

massacre reached Jin, I was sent to Jingnian

to investigate the rhyme.

That's a Jianghu tale.

Why'd Sky Window act on it?

I don't know.

I know Duan Pengju is eager to get Glazed Armour.

I can secretly check for you.

Don't. As I risked showing up,

I've endangered you. It was my last resort.

Few who joined Sky Window due to me are alive.

You're loyal to me if you stay alive.

Official.

Lord, you're Chief's pal.

Call me Han Ying.

Official.

Why'd you ask Gao Chong for the Zhang orphan?

Hanged Ghost wiped out Mirror Sect.

Glazed Armour should be with Ghost Valley.

Why want the Zhang kid?

I don't know.

A Sky Window spy in Mirror Sect saw

Ghosts torture the Zhangs to get the Armour.

Zhang Yusen didn't give in

so Glazed Armour must be with his son who fled.

Old Jianghu foxes are perceptive.

They should've known,

when Ghosts tried to abduct Chengling in 3-Cypress Manor,

that Mirror Lake case isn't over.

Chief, any orders?

Chengling is his disciple.

Old Wen.

Chengling's your disciple?

Forgive my not knowing.

- I'll try to... - No need.

On return, act as if you didn't seen me.

But don't rush any action.

If I am right,

Five Lakes will make Chengling hand over Glazed Armour.

And it'll be before Heroes Assembly.

( Fang Buzhi - Nine Claw Fox )

"Iridescent Clouds scattered; Glaze shattered."

Is this genuinely Glazed Armour?

But the man had it on him.

Is he a fool?

Damn it.

What's going on?

Both Sky Window and Villa Chief.

What kind of man am I following?

Just now...thank you.

Answer my question first.

Why did an eminent Sky Window man

go sunbathing in Yue?

You were playing?

I've left Sky Window.

Old Wen, I owe you a favour.

You don't owe me a favour.

You owe me an explanation.

A'Xu.

You want me to believe

you did all this for 3 silvers?

What's your connection with Chengling?

I fulfilled my promise to the old Yue boatman.

But when I saw that kid in danger,

I couldn't do nothing.

Take it as charity.

Maybe many kinds...

Maybe fewer kinds of torture will be used on me in Hell.

Close peers deceive each other.

Newly met strangers trust each other.

Interesting.

But, A'Xu.

You're not linked to Five Lakes, right?

By asking, you have a grudge against Five Lakes?

Since you asked,

I've a question for you.

The day Mirror Lake was wiped out,

did you appear there by coincidence?

Not really a coincidence.

Didn't I follow you?

You said we'd meet if fated.

I couldn't wait for fate.

So I initiated it.

I asked because I treat you as a friend.

You treat me as a friend?

We went through thick and thin.

You only see me as a friend.

Oh, Wen Kexing.

Seems you must work harder.

Ask me what I think of you.

I don't care.

Let's hurry down the mountain.

You're my soulmate.

Look around.

He died of poison.

Be careful.

Touch nothing. Beware of poison.

- Aye. - Aye.

Senior Gao, look!

Is that his loot?

Fang Buzhi was cunning.

Who could find him before us?

Come again.

Melon for sale! Big, sweet melon!

Melon for sale!

Sweet melon.

Sir, try sweet melon.

Which is sweetest?

Here, this is sweet.

- Take a big one. - A'Xu.

So sweet.

Sir. You didn't pay.

This one.

Okay. Thanks.

Want some?

Thank you.

Are you done eating?

Why are you like a kid on a first market outing?

Won't you find your pouch and accessory?

If I can't find them, it's fine.

A'Xu, try this dessert.

I got extra syrup.

Your money wasn't spent.

You're generously spending mine.

Don't be stingy.

I saved your disciple, right? It's a deal.

Who made a deal with you?

Return my money.

A'Xu.

Let me spend your money.

No loss.

You risked death for 3 silvers.

I only spent a little.

*I'll sell myself to you.

Is that okay?

Okay.

*I'll sell you to a brothel.

Alright. I'll go wherever you go.

Come and look!

A Western Region troupe!

It's a rare chance.

A'Xu, ever seen their magic?

Why do they cut up a beauty?

Live magic! Entry by coins!

You'll be impressed.

Let's look. I've never seen it.

Western Region troupe.

Let's go. Fang Buzhi may be inside.

Let's go.

Sirs, come in.

An exotic show. It's quite special.

This zither tune...

Let's see their trick.

Good!

Good!

Congratulations on Five Lakes upcoming Heroes Assembly.

These ten human heads represent Ghost Valley's goodwill.

Hurry up! Arrest them!

Junior Wei?

Everyone, please don't panic.

Yueyang Sect will certainly investigate this.

Under Chief Gao's leadership,

we'll bring the bad guys to justice.

Don't be afraid.

Yueyang Sect seems more powerful than feudal officials here.

Protecting this place?

Chief Gao isn't dead. Why do they see him as a saint?

Yueyang Sect has heavy security.

Many fighters are in town.

I didn't expect Ghost Valley would cause this chaos.

This is a a slap in his face.

Chief Gao has lost respect.

Ghost Valley humiliated Yueyang Sect.

Think it's just the start?

Move back!

You fear for your disciple?

How have I a disciple?

Here you go again. Just admit it.

Why don't we greet Zhao Jing?

Also, pay our respects to beneficent Iron Judge, Gao Chong.

Master!

Wei...Junior Wei...

Yunge, my son! I'll avenge you!

Damn Ghosts!

Those heartless demons!

I'll fight them to death.

Absurd! How can they be so defiant?

Ghost Valley overreached!

Even if the Ghosts are fierce,

do they dare oppose us all?

But they did commit evil!

Big Brother, don't fret.

Ghost Valley will collapse with evil deeds.

Big Bro, don't be too angry.

I swear

I'll make Ghost Valley pay tenfold!

Tenfold?

This is extremely shameful!

If I can't erase Ghost Valley,

how can I keep living?

- Yes! - Chief, you're right!

An eye for an eye! Erase Ghost Valley!

Please wait.

Thank you.

- Bro Wen. Bro Zhou. - Hero Zhao.

How are you?

Sorry to greet you late.

Hero Shen.

We were seeking you two.

You came yourselves.

You sought me? I'm flattered.

Stop acting.

You left Three Cypress Villa with no word. Why?

Sorry.

You weren't free to socialise

so we departed. I left a note.

Why blame me?

Good excuse.

The night you left, Second Bro suffered theft.

You two, explain!

Hero Zhao.

You blame me for the theft?

I don't. It's a misunderstanding.

They're Five Lakes benefactors.

Why suspect them?

Benefactors?

Big Brother.

Master Wen saved Chengling at Mirror Lake

and escorted him.

They helped a lot.

Master Wen, you know me?

Famed Iron Judge, Gao Chong. It's not strange I know you.

It's my honour if it's mutual.

Chief Gao, do you know me?

Sorry, I don't know you.

Master Wen, so you knew my Brother, Zhang Yusen?

To both of you, thanks.

Five Lakes will remember your kindness.

Old Wen looks strange.

How's he linked to Gao Chong?

I didn't know Hero Zhang.

Fate let me act for justice.

We came here today to visit Chengling.

But seems it's the wrong time.

Is Chengling doing okay?

Cheng Ling is unwell and resting.

A visit isn't good.

Chengling is sick?

Is it serious?

How about we check?

Master Wen, your full name is...

I'm Wen Kexing.

Master Wen, which is your sect?

I've none.

Father taught me gongfu and I trained informally.

Then who's your dad?

He raised an heroic young man.

My father was an ordinary, unworldly nobody.

He wasn't an astute man.

Father died years ago.

How would you busy Heroes remember him?

Master! It's bad, Master!

Master! They've killed... They've killed someone again!

Don't you see guests here? Why are you panicking?

Master.

Senior Gao saw the body there while on patrol.

Got it.
