John Carpenter's "Halloween"

is the foundation
for modern horror.

In fact, it spawned the entire
idea of the slasher franchise.

At the time it came out in 1978,
"Grease" was the word.

"Superman" ticket sales
were up, up, and away.

But then...

...a little flick
about babysitters

terrorized by a faceless
killer in a dime-store mask

suddenly slashed its way
to the top of the box office.

Not since "Psycho" had the
American public been so excited

by, well, a psycho.

The torch that scream queen
Janet Leigh held alit

was passed
to her daughter Jamie,

who became the original
final girl.

John Carpenter took a film
that nobody believed in,

set it to a simple piano melody,
and, well, the rest is history.

Without it, there's no
"Friday the 13th,"

there's no "Scream," there's no
"Nightmare on Elm Street."

So why is it so effective?

Let's find out.

We have the perfect people here
today to talk about "Halloween."

She's the heir apparent
to Michael Myers

and the star of
"Halloween 4," "5"...

-Uncle.
-...and Rob Zombie's remakes.

Ah-aah!

His entire body of work is
a love letter to '80s slashers,

none of which would be possible

without the original
"Halloween."

It's Adam Green
and Danielle Harris.

I just want to hear both
of your thoughts

on how significant
the entire franchise was.

When you think about
how huge "Psycho" was...

It captivated the world.

And -- And then what?

I think Michael Myers was
really the answer to that.

And what did they do
with "Psycho"?

Like after "Halloween"
started franchise horror

and "Friday the 13th,"
then we got "Psycho II."

Psycho

II.

Nowadays, they're
all franchise horror.

But they're all looking
for the next Michael Myers

and no one's really quite
accomplished that yet.

-No one ever will.
-I don't know why

that is, though.

Because Michael Myers
is the king.

-'Cause he started it.
-Yes.

You know, what's creepy
about "Halloween"

is this person could be anybody.

Usually,
someone in their family

kills them. It's not usually,
Right.

you know, the -- the --
the crazed guy next door,

-Absolutely.
-which you don't really know.

You're bringing up
a really good point.

"Halloween" was so frightening
because no one knows why.

That is why
it was so scary.

And you didn't need
to know anything else.

Michael got up, right?

You can't kill evil.
Evil never dies.

That's what's so terrifying.

"Halloween" is
the most iconic.

I mean, that music.

Everybody knows that music.

They all know what
Michael Myers looks like.

Even if they haven't seen
the movie, they know that.

And I think that movie is one
of the most effective

because they went in
and it wasn't to set up

"Halloween" I
for "Halloween II."
Danielle: Right.

Originally, it wasn't
going to be

sequel after sequel
after sequel.

Carpenter's original vision
was to have the sequels

each be something
different set on Halloween

and they tried that
with "Halloween III,"

Danielle: Mm-hmm.
which, at first, was rejected.

And Carpenter's movie
was not bloody.

It wasn't relying on gore,
but the sequels were

'cause that was the time.

Your imagination's
always gonna be better

than whatever you see.
Mickey: Totally.

That's why you never wanna
show gags,

unless they're reallygood.

I wonder if it -- if it's gonna
make that -- that --

uh, that trip right back
to where it had started.

'Cause it seems like
nobody buys it anymore.

Why do you think
that we are so

enamored
with Laurie Strode?

Why do you think that
she's so significant?

It was the, uh, first time
that heroine, the final girl,

really took over
and beat the bad guy.

Mickey: Right.
I mean, there's women sitting

in the audience that --
that may have wanted

to break free of whatever was
happening in their life

-And I think it was sort of

a-a moment to feel like

"Oh, my God, I can --
I could be strong.

I don't hate to hide.

I don't have to depend on a man.

I can rise above and --
and win at the end."

She was the girl next door.

I mean,
she was the babysitter.

Everyone relates to that.

Maybe there's girls like me
that are in the audience,

that are seeing those girls,
and go like,

"I can do that, too.

I can get bad guy."

Woman: She's got a gun!

I killed him.

Adam, please tell us about
how "Halloween" influenced

your entire
filmography, really,

'cause "Hatchet"
is clearly like

an homage to a lot
of different slashers.

Were you makin'
the film, saying,

"I want Victor Crowley to be
as big as Michael Myers"?

Was that the intention?

Well, no.

I mean, you --
'cause you can't.

-Yeah.
-No one's ever going to make

a slasher movie
like "Halloween" again.

I mean, the fact that
he made something

that was so terrifying
without needing gore --

or really even violence,
when you really think

about it, but it was
atmosphere and unknown.

And it just -- I mean,
it still works to this day.

Danielle, obviously,
you have

a filmography full
of "Halloween."

I want to talk about how
the films influenced you.

-Well, it really messed me up.

superexcited to like

go to Utah
and make a movie.

Well, the story
with "The Shining"

is that the little kid
didn't even know that

he was in a horror movie
until the very end.

Clearly, that doesn't
sound the case with you.

No.

No, I was excited.

-Yeah.
-I mean, it was fun.

Everyone on set makes sure

that you are not scared

Mickey: Okay.
and that you're having

a good time. You know, you got
Sure.

a lot of aunts and uncles
and people

playing with you and --
That sounded horrible,

but, you know, just saying.

You know what I mean.

The only scene they wouldn't
let me be in, in that movie,

was in the car when he gets
his head pulled off.

-Aaaaaaah!
-Arggggggghhh!

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!

They'd stick me
on an 18-foot roof and --

with no harness and throw me --
you know, make me slide down

and do all kinds
of other horrible things,

but that was the one
they wouldn't let me do.

I had a great experience.

I think, if it weren't
for "Halloween,"

I wouldn't have a career.

I was at a convention

last year
and there was a woman.

She had her daughter with her

and she was shaking
and crying

and -- and she said,
"This is Jamie.

This is Jamie."
And I was like "Hi, Jamie."

And she's like "No,
I named her after you."

And I took a moment and I said,

"You do realize that I...

killed my...

mother in the movie, right?"

Like, I mean,
it's scary to watch.

When "Halloween 4" comes on,
I'm still glued to the screen.

It's just incredibly terrifying.

What scene,
in any of the series,

stayed with you?
I'm all over this. All right.

-Go ahead.
-So, the opening

of "Halloween 4,"
I think,

is the best opening of any
Hm.

slasher franchise, ever.

From the shots of farmland
and that autumn coloring,

that is Halloween,
the holiday.

And then, when they're
taking him on the --

the gurney, and that
first kill is so simple.

It's just a thumb in the head.
Aaaaah!

No!

But it was suddenly violent
and it was gory

and it seemed painful,
and that was everything.

If you can evoke
that kind of feeling

and then just deliver
like that,

and it --
it's just perfect.

"Halloween," 300 grand,

basically, you know.
Mm-hmm.

Carpenter composes
the score

in three days or something,
uses a mask

that he just bought
of William Shatner.

Cost like a dollar
to do.

Do you know the story
of why William Shatner?

Like I don't know.

They just wanted
something plain.

I think it was between
like a clown mask

that they found and
a William Shatner mask

and they were like
"Uh..."

They bought it
at the store.

There were --
"Star Trek" masks were out

and they just painted it
white, and that was it.

I guess I owe the success of
"Halloween" to William Shatner.

The Michael Myers mask
is so iconic.

They chose it because
it's William Shatner,

he had neutral features,

and they ended up having
this happy accident

where they made a really
iconic mask for nothing.

So we thought
it'd be really fun

if we could try to do that
again today on the show

with a whole bunch
of different masks.

I wanted to see if you
guys can can recognize

who these masks are

and if they're
actually terrifying.

This feels oddly
comfortable and...

She's an icon. She can do
whatever she wants.

Well, speaking of icons,
let's check out

some iconic moments
from the franchise.

Cute, Bob.
Real cute.

Clearly,
we love this one.

This one's
very influential.

This is the perfect
example of tension.

Yeah, it's a great exercise
in trusting your audience.

The camera isn't moving around
or trying to sell you,

"You're scared"
or "This is suspenseful."

It's literally just a shape
in a doorway, doing nothing.

Yet, the longer this goes on,

you're just building
and building

and waiting for that release.

This is also sort of
the beginning of,

"If you have sex in
a horror movie, you will die."

Yeah, absolutely.

Uhh. Uhhhh.

So, this scene is great.

In the first one,
we got to see that you can

knock the killer down
or shoot him,

but he'll get back up.

But now, I mean, literally,
take out his eyes --

like he's full-on
supernatural at this point.

But he's also acting more human
than we've seen him act.

He's signifying pain
Ah!

and he can't see.

It was a great way
to sort of humanize him

before killing him
for good, supposedly.

All right.
"Halloween 4."

Now, there -- there's
so much to this scene.

I mean, look, it's an homage
to the very beginning

of the original,
and it was shocking at the time.

The fact that little Jamie Lloyd
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!

goes and stabs her own mother

and her just standing there,
covered in blood,

I mean, that is what made

Danielle timeless.
No!

No!
And the way Loomis is just

yelling, "No!

No, no, no, no!"

It's just -- Love it.

It's perfect.

Another great one
from "Halloween."

The impalement.

So, what made this so memorable:
i-it's not the death scene.

It's Michael Myers's
reaction after,

the way he admires
his work, almost.

He sticks this dude to the wall
with a butcher knife

and then like slowly cocks
his head to the side,

like looking at it.

You learn more about him
through that head nod

than anything else.

The incredible reveal.

"Halloween,"
the original.

This is one
of the first films

where the dead villain
actually gets back up.

Yeah, the composition of that
shot of him slowly rising up,

uh, is fantastic.

But the fact that
the mask came off

and you saw a real man.

And he's a handsome
guy, too --

that's the weirdest
thing about it.

It's like
he's not maimed.

He's not like an alien.

He's just a handsome young
man on a killing spree.

You're right.
He's not deformed.

He's not a monster.

He's -- He's the soccer
coach next door.

He's your kid's --
your kid's teacher.

It's time. It's time.

Here is "Halloween III."

One of themost underrated
movies of all times.

And the -- the -- the song,

and all it is is
"London Bridge Is Falling Down."

-Yeah.
-It's so simple.

Silver Shamrock masks.

Gather 'round your TV set.

Man, th-this death,
and that it was as child,

-Yeah.
-in front of his parents.

What a batshit insane
third movie for the sequel.

Just a-a batshit movie
in general.

It's just brutal.

about decapitations.

Yes, absolutely.

When you do a decapitation,
sometimes the head

wants to fall off
and it's really cumbersome

and a big pain in the ass,
so what we do is

we put a high-powered magnet
in the neck stump

andin the stump
of the head.

And -- boom -- it clicks on
and it holds in place.

-Wow. That's crazy.
-So no fuckin' around.

-Yeah, that's insane.
-Yeah.

Jim:
We've got a silicone skin.

We've got a nice mold
of our unfortunate crew member.

And then we can cut right
through his skin here.

Is this what you do
for your front porch

for Halloween every year?

Yes. I can't wait.

That's -- I'm keeping
this guy for this.

I thought I was cool,
giving out

full-size candy bars.
Clearly, uh,

is you have to cut
around it

all the time,
to sell it.

Your angles are
really important.

But you could
literally just

completely dismember
this head,

as we're seeing,

and it is all perfect.

It comes down to reverse
engineering.

You've got a mold
of the poor bastard's head,

and you just do you skin layer,

you do your fat layer,
you do your blood layer,

and then you just back it up
with muscle tissue

and all that shit.
Then, uh,

let's see --
Yeah, let's see -- Lookit.

Yeah, you can cut this -- can
cut this damn nose off, even.

-Oh, my gosh!
-Yeah.

-And what's in...? Ohh!
-Yeah. Look at this.

Nasal cavity with full
cartilage accessory.

This is the part where

you tell us this is
actually a real head

and you murdered somebody.

for what you and your
team do because,

for an effect that usually
would happen in a snap,

you guys spend months,

and then you just
watch it all fall apart.

It's thousands of dollars,
days and days of work.

is often occluded.

We think Voorhees,

but, most of all,
we think of

one Mr. Michael Myers.

Bottom line?

Masks are fuckin' creepy.

And here to talk about why

is "Halloween" franchise
expert Sean Clark.

-Hello, sir. How you doing?
-Sir, how are you today?

-Awesome.
-So, as a expert of masks,

why do you think,
on a basic human level,

we're just
terrified of 'em?

Why do they
always show up

in so many fuckin'
horror movies?

I think it's just the
unknown, you know?

Not knowing
what's behind the mask.

That's what's scary.

Why is his mask
in particular so iconic?

Expressionless, quiet.

You know, they --
they described him

as a great white shark,
you know?

He seems like
he needs that mask.

-Mm-hmm.
-You know, he was killing

Laurie,
and then he stops and --

"I have to put it
right back on."

You know what I mean?
Like "I need this."

Right. So it's kind of like
"The Phantom of the Opera,"

too, almost like
a reverse of that.

'Cause everyone gasps when
he takes his mask off.

Yeah, I think
that he was hoping

the audience would expect
that sort of a reveal,

like we saw with Jason
so many times,

-Yeah. Right.
-this horrific face.

And it wasn't.
It was just this plain guy.

I guess that almost seems
more frightening,

-Yeah.
-that it could be anybody.

Hello?

Let's talk
about the origins

of the entire thing.

I guess it would start
at Don Post Studios.

So this here, actually,
is the William Shatner life mask

that Bill Malone used

to make the William Shatner/
Captain Kirk mask

for Don Post Studios.

You can actually already see
that's creepy as it is.

It kind of looks like
origins of drama,

the Greek chorus mask,

and it's so funny to see
this kind of influence

an entire culture
of horror films.

So, what they did is

Tommy Lee Wallace
took this mask here.

He took the eyebrows off,
he took the sideburns off,

he cut the eyes wider,
and he spray-painted it white,

literally, with spray paint.

And then he took streaks
and tips, brown, and --

and just ran it through the hair
and darkened the hair.

And -- boom -- he had this.

And when he walked
in the room wearing this,

when they did the screen tests,

I guess everybody
just got chills.

And I can see why 'cause

it's fuckin' creepy as shit.
Yeah.

-It's absolutely terrifying.
-Mm-hmm.

So, there are technically,
in the first one,

three Michael Myers
actors?

Well, if you want
to get technical,

seven people played
Michael Myers in the first film.

Nick Castle did probably
95% of the work.

But Tommy Lee Wallace, who was
the production designer,

pretty much anytime
Michael Myers broke something,

he put on the costume 'cause,

being the art director,
he knew how

to break things, you know?
Right.

There was one scene
with a dog trainer

that wore the costume when
he kills the German shepherd.

Tony Moran played the unmasked.

He's in it for like
eight seconds,

but he's the face of Michael.

Strangely enough,
he was Erin Moran's brother,

who was Joanie on
"Happy Days."

-Okay.
-Yeah.

Jim Windburn was a stunt man

who took the fall.

He's literally in one scene

of his ass coming
towards the camera.

Will Sandin played
young Michael Myers.

And then Debra Hill
did one scene.

She was the producer.

She was standing
across the street

when Tommy Doyle
looks out the window

and sees the silhouette
in front of the house?

Yeah. And is it true
that Debra Hill is also

the hand in that
opening long take?

Exactly. She was the hands

of young Michael
grabbing the knife

and stabbing Judith.

Ohhh!
Aah!

Now, this is
the "Part II" mask.

It's the same mask.

This one looks
more weathered because,

since it was
spray-paint and stuff,

I mean, stuff would
stick to it, and --

and it would get dirty
easily, and, um, it --

it just gave it
a whole different look

by the time
it got to "Part II."

And, actually, in my opinion,
this version's creepier.

I do agree. I think
the second movie

has a scarier-
looking mask.

Yeah. He played it
differently, too.

He had a real robot
kind of vibe,

and I always
found that creepy.

Well, the robot vibe
actually kind of

leads us
into "Part III."

If you want to talk
about robots...

Both: Yes.
This was actually screen-used.

The pumpkin ended up
being the one that, uh,

little Buddy
met his demise wearing.

Now, in "Part 4," they thought,
"Well, let's get a guy

from Don Post Studios
to convert a mask for us."

And he took what they say
was an original Shatner

and did his conversion to it

and it ended up
looking like this.

Now, this

didn't really go over well.

Not my favorite,
not a fan favorite.

But then it gets really weird,
Mm-hmm. Yeah.

-when we get to "Part 5."
-How so?

This was the version
they started with,

and the director
didn't like the nose

and he wanted it
a little bit bigger.

Now, this is the nose extension
that they added to it.

You can see the seam lines.
Yeah.

So it gave the mask
a very different look here.

Uh, but there was a scene
in the film

where he puts on
someone else's mask.

And that's this one here,
which is actually

kind of referred
to fans as The Brute.

It's basically a German mask
from some German company.

They literally bought it
off a store shelf

and put it on the guy.

I just love
barbaric men.

Now, they brought in effects
artist John Carl Buechler

to do the mask for
"Halloween 6."

It's got a cool, evil,
rough look to it.

I thought they were
starting to get it right

when they got to this mask,
as far as I thought.

Then, when they went on
to do "Halloween H20"...

...they decided to bring
John Carl Buechler back

and have him make
the mask for that film,

which, this is actually the
screen-used version right here.

-Oh, wow.
-So this was used

in the opening scene,

where he goes in the house
and kills the nurse.

So, they'd shot that scene
with this mask,

but Steve Miner, the director,
when he saw the footage,

he didn't like the mask.

He wanted it changed
and wanted it to be

completely plain and blank.

So they brought in this version.

So, they shot the entire
movie with this.

Then, apparently, an executive
at Dimension saw the footage

and stood up in the middle
of the theater and said,

"That's not fucking
Michael Myers.

What the fuck is that?"
and like went off.

He went to Stan Winston
Studios and said,

"Hey, we need a Michael Myers
mask. We need it fast."

So he had one of his guys
sculpt this mask.

And what they did
is they went back

and reshot all the close-ups.

So, if you look closely
in the film, you'll notice,

when Michael's coming,
it's this mask.

But then, when he gets close,

it's this mask.
It's -- Oh, my God.

And, once you notice that,

it really starts
to get annoying.

So that's the movie that had
the most masks in it.

Well, now let's get on
to "Resurrection."

I think they got so tired

with these studios
not being able to get it right

that they thought,
"You know right?

Let's hire a mask
company to make it."

So they got Cinema Secrets
to make the mask.

They literally took this mask
and tried to replicate it.

So if you look, the sculpture
is very similar,

but the problem
with Cinema Secrets was

it just looks like
a store-bought mask.

It's just --
It's just overdone.

-Yeah, totally.
-That's the problem.

It's too polished.
It's too shiny.

-I mean, they --
-It's very clean-cut

-Yeah.
-around the scalp, too.

I mean, he looks like
he went to a salon.

I mean -- You know what I mean?

-Yeah.
-So, we got to get into

the reboot now.
Which,

I don't know about you.
Big fan.

This one goes through
several kind of changes.

This is the sort of
rotted version that you --

he finds in the floorboards.
Yeah.

I-I like the sculpture.

I think it's cool.
It looks angry.

It's got a --
It's got a cool vibe to it.

So, this was the 2007 version.

And then, when he came out
and did "Halloween II"...

...it was even more distressed
and, you know, falling apart.

And -- And it goes through
different stages

in "Halloween II," as well.
Like this whole part

is cut away at one point.

But this is kind of stage 1
of "Halloween II."

As a "Halloween"
franchise expert,

what do you hope for
in the re-reboot,

as far as masks go,
for Michael Myers?

Gotta go with the original
Don Post Captain Kirk, you know?

It's superfunny;
it's supercool.

It's a perfect,
perfect, October movie.

This is like
an essential, dude.

Have you ever heard of this?
I've never heard

of "Ghostwatch."
What big eyes you have.

This is a legend.

It aired on Halloween 1992,

on the BBC.

We hope to show you,

ghosts really do exist.

They aired it
as a real news broadcast,

as a live investigation
of a haunted house.

It freaked the entire
country out.

If you watch it today,
it's a hell of a lot of fun,
