And she's not able to visit me here,
so it's up to me to visit her.

- It just seems so sudden.

- At my age it's best to not plan too far

- I was hoping the two of you might
look after her 'til I get back.

She pretty much keeps to herself nowadays.

down and pour her in with me.

She's got two kids in college now.

Once you get on to I-70,

- I haven't driven on that highway in 15

the national road in 1952,

and that's the road I'm going to take back.

I've got it all marked here.

- Dorothy, this map is from the 60s. A lot
of those road were closed years ago.

- I know where I'm going.

- Dorothy, there have been a
lot of changes since then.

Some of those towns you remember, they
aren't even really there anymore.

Just little grease spots on the prairie.

- They may look a little bit different
now, but I'll remember them.

- Can you drive after dark?

- I'm still legal, if that's what you mean.

- I told you I was going

Well, it'll probably take you a lot longer,

comfortable taking the county roads.

That's county road 58.

It'll follow the highway east for some
time. After that, you'll be on your own.

You'll probably want to get a map.

Looks like you got a
pretty good leak there.

- I don't know what happened.

- Oh, you probably just blew a hose.
That's all.

- Someone in town told me you'd
probably be able to fix it.

- Lady, I ain't gonna have
any parts for this car.

- Isn't there anything you can do?

- I might be able to make something
fit, but it'd just be temporary.

Or I could get the right part and
hook it up for you tomorrow.

- Tomorrow?

- Well, let's see what
we're looking at first.

That's the trouble with these older cars.
The hoses oxidize,

get weak, and just blow.

- I hope it's not too hard to fix.

- Well...

It's just like I said, you can see
it coming out from down under there.

- Is there anything you can do?

- Well I might be able to
cut out the split, and

patch it with an adapter and a couple
of hose clamps, but that's about it.

- How long would that take?

- Not too long. About an hour.

Two at the most.

- I'd really appreciate it.

- You might want to think
about replacing all of them, or

just getting something newer.

I'm afraid this one's seen better days.

- I'll think about that. Thank you.

Is there some place I can wait?

- Lady, you don't want to wait here.

I can take you up to this
little church in town.

It's just a couple blocks west of here.

- No, there's no need
for you to go anywhere.

Truth to tell, I could use a walk anyway.

No, you get to going what needs to be done.

- OK.

I'll come get you when I'm finished.

- Thank you.

- Oh, excuse me. I was just
looking for a place to sit down.

- We thought you were the pastor.

- Linda just found out her sister died.

- Oh, I'm so sorry.

- Well, it happenned over a month ago,
but her daughter never told her.

- She was the baby.

My little sister.

- Now there's no one left but me.

- Your daughter must love you very much.

I know when the doctor told
my husband he had the cancer,

the doctor said he had a 15 percent chance.
I was devastated.

But not Howard. All the way
home he just chatted as always.

Like there was nothing
wrong with him at all.

He talked about visiting
our daughter in Iowa,

about going back for his 50th reunion,

about finally cleaning out the attic.

I didn't understand it at all.

But Howard never could hear very well,
probably on account of the war.

He thought the doctor said
he had a 50 percent chance.

I didn't have the heart to
tell him any different.

It's hard to watch someone you love suffer.

And some folks might say it's
wrong to try to protect them.

But you and I as mothers know we
do everything we can to shield

the ones we love from the
pains and sorrows of life.

So I know, without you ever saying a word,

you taught your daughter well.

- I checked the food and
changed its litter.

I couldn't find it though.

- It's probably just under a bed somewhere.

- No, I mean about Dorothy.
I couldn't reach her.

But we could have stopped her. We could

kept going. The story of my life.

I kept it to remind myself how
easy it is to throw it all away.

I was a stay at home mom,

I don't know what's wrong with me.

That fence just started to close in.

Started to feel more like a cage.

- One night I met this guy named
Jacob at a club downtown.

He was in the band, of course.

I went back the next night.

And every single night
for two weeks straight.

Sometimes I'd come home late.

Sometimes I wouldn't come home at all.

And when it was time for
the band to move on.

Jacob asked me to come with them.

Paul knew what I was doing.

Begged me not to go.

Told me how much he loved me.

How much he and Cassie needed me.

But I looked at my life,
and I looked at Jacob's.

I mean, who would you rather
spend your life with?

So I left Cassie with Paul
and I went out on the road.

But she had stars in her eyes.

And cotton in her head.

She knocked around from job to job.

Waiting tables, mostly.

Until one day she met a man.

Fell for him hard.

But he wasn't just any man.

He was a married man with two kids.

- Exactly what you'd expect.

He cut her off.

Moved on to someone new, I suppose.

It was an old story, even then.

That's when she thought she might
move back home, but she was...

She was ashamed.

And sorry for what she did.

But it took a little while.

She went back and got a job on
the perfume counter at Roots.

- Roots?

- It was the big department
store in Terre Haute.

Long gone now.

She got a little money together and
enrolled in secretarial school.

Wasn't a year later 'til she met
a nice young man at church.

Her friends all warned her not
to, but she told him everything.

He must've really loved her, too.

For they were married a year
later and had two kids together.

- So they lived happily ever after?

- Well, she'd say nobody
can make you happy.

No, I had to make that choice myself.

and her car isn't in the driveway,

As if the men who served

tell me about it when he got back home.

But he never did talk about it. Not once.

Not even when I asked him.

I didn't understand it, but I figured
he was trying to protect me.

Now I wonder if he wasn't
trying to protect himself, too,

from the memory of the
things he'd seen and done.
