- [Daniel] Thanks for joining us on "Live Action Radio,"

I'm Daniel Sechtin. Good evening and thanks for listening.

It's been 50 years since the outbreak of 1968,

known as the Night of the Living Dead.

But what really happened that night?

Experts believe radiation from a fallen satellite brought

certain people into an unconscious zombie-like state.

Others claim that we actually witnessed the bodies of the

deceased returning to life.

Today in the 21st century, we know how implausible that is,

but there is a certain fraction of society that still

believes the outbreak was truly the return of the dead.

With the anniversary of the original epidemic approaching,

Americans remain divided.

- How's it going, YouTube, Twitch, Instagram, Facebook.

You know, just kind of hit 'em all at once.

'Cause there's been too many people that have been asking

for me to kind of like leave my thoughts and comments

on just like, the dead are coming back to life. They're not.

And there's people like, Oh, well what about 1968?

No, there's nothing.

There was nothing in 1968. There's nothing going on now.

Internet, friends, family,

you have nothing to be worried about.

You are totally, completely, utterly safe.

And that is that.

- Listen, when it comes to this whole

Night of the Living Dead business,

people seem to be pretty divided about what went down.

Is that that they believe what happened was real or,

they're just crazy. [laughing] I'm sorry,

but how do you justify the dead returning to life?

That just doesn't make any sense to me.

I've heard the stories. I've seen the photos.

My grandfather told me himself that it was

all a load of [bleep] just made to distract us

from the bigger problems that were happening

in our country at that time. You're asking me, sorry.

I gotta agree with the old man.

I think it's all a load of [bleep].

[static]

- Seems like most of my listeners,

they want my opinion on things

that I don't even talk about online.

Last year it was the UFO incident that occurred in San Diego

involving the Navy warships.

This year it's whether or not the dead come back to life.

And you wanna know my opinion on the 1968 incident?

It wasn't even a government cover up.

It's a [bleep] hoax.

[birds chirping]

- How long would you say we've been

paranormal investigating for?

- We've been doing this for about eight years now.

- Our grandparents met shortly after the events in 1968.

Our family has always believed what went down was real.

Not some hoax, like some people played it out to be.

- My dad said the local authorities tried to cover it up.

- Sounds about right.

- People in this town have a habit of trying to sweep things

under the rug. But you know what they say,

"Truth always comes out."

- Zombies are not real. [laughs]

The government is just trying to make you

think that they are.

First, the government puts chemicals in the water,

which is why I only drink my own urine. And then, and then,

then, then they try to control us through the news.

They try to control our thoughts.

They try to make us think that birds are real.

No, I'm not buying it.

- [Daniel] Whether you believe this can be

explained by science or if you think

it's something more supernatural,

one thing is for certain: the divide is still strong

and the mix of opinions about that night

aren't slowing down.

- Hey, this is Brandon Ludwig and you're listening to

"Beam Me Up" starring Kenny Scott Guffey, Brian Labuda,

Joe Piazza and Trevor Lasune.

[upbeat music]

- Look, I've said it before and I'll say it again.

This whole Night of the Living Dead fiasco,

it's nothing but a lie.

- That's what you say at least.

- Okay, I'll buy it. Who's been playing your momma's lies?

- Just I know certain people that would think otherwise.

- Really, like someone you know personally?

- Oh, come on, Brady. There's-

- It's okay, Piper.

Let the man speak.

- [scoffs] Wait, you were talking about me.

- Oh, this will be good.

- Listen, growing up in our,

hearing those stories from our families,

you know, they were just- - It was only so they could scare-

- Christ sake, Brady. Just let her finish.

- Are you kidding me Adam, you believe these stories too?

- [Adam] That's not what I said.

- Can I finish?

- As you were saying.

- Look, I'm not saying that the stories are true either,

but you can't deny the effect that they had on us

growing up. - She's not wrong, bro.

My pops used to tell me stories all the time.

His grandfather even knew someone involved.

- [Piper] Yeah. - Of course you're gonna back her up.

She's your girlfriend, dude.

- Honestly, that shit scared me as a kid.

- Right? Anytime I heard it was the anniversary,

I was too afraid to even step outside.

- Let's keep in mind, we were just kids.

I don't think we still feel the same way.

Maybe not all of us.

- Listen, I'm just saying it's important

to keep an open mind about the situation.

Whether you believe it or not,

there's a reason we all can't stop talking about it.

- Well, I can't stop talking about it for different reasons.

So to each their own.

- Guess what? - Hmm?

- This Saturday is the 54th anniversary.

- Wait, you remember the date?

- She's right. Pipe knows her shit.

- Why don't you "pipe" down, Adam?

So it's the anniversary. What's your point?

- [Piper] Why not take it back to where it all began?

- [Brady] Where would that be?

- Right here, this cemetery.

This Saturday, we can go down there

somewhere near the cemetery and do our podcast.

- Yes. Maybe we can find the farmhouse.

- Wait, I thought they tore that place down.

- Um. Says here that someone bought it

and renovated it and now it's a tourist attraction.

- It's not authentic then.

The original farmhouse is where

all those people were killed.

- Oh, bit me, Nerd of the Living Dead.

[all chuckling]

[phone chimes] It's Judy.

- Judy?

- Yeah. She said she is listening to the podcast

and wants to come with us.

- Hell no. Not happening. [all laugh]

It's not happening.

- Yo, listen, for those of you that don't know,

Judy is Brady's ex-girlfriend.

- Fuck off, dude. We weren't dating.

- Then what the hell would you call that?

- It's complicated, man.

- Come on, Brady. Just be mature and let it go.

Besides, we're all still friends.

- I don't think I can do that.

- And for those of you that also don't know,

Brady here blew it at a bonfire party one night

after too much brewski. [slap lands]

- Fuck it. I've got nothing to lose. I'll make arrangements.

We can all just shack up.

- For real? - Why the hell not?

I don't think anyone's been there in a while,

but as far as I'm concerned, it's all ours.

But when I'm right and we find out this is

all a big waste of time, I want an apology from both of you.

And you too, Judy.

- God damn weeds just, ah Jesus.

Ah. Damn it!

Oh, you mother.

It just, yeah.

You guys were good together and we were all really tight.

- Fuck it. I've not seen her since that night.

- You know, I don't really buy it.

- Buy what?

- If you don't believe in any of this,

then why are you doing it?

- Because that's how far I'm willing to go

to get an apology from you.

- [scoffs] Over my dead body.

[Adam coughing]

Adam, that is not a cigarette.

- [Brady] No, it isn't.

- Here. You don't mind sharing?

- Nah. I'm good.

- What the hell would you do that for Piper?

[emergency alert beeping]

- Good evening, my fellow Americans.

It is with a heavy heart

I have come before you tonight to address the crisis

of violence occurring across our nation.

I have spoken with top US health officials

and medical experts,

and they have all confirmed that the bodies of the deceased

are in fact returning to life.

In what is being called a "Night of the Living Dead,"

The deceased are not returning as they once were,

but are seeking out and consuming human flesh,

which seems to be sustaining their afterlife force.

As of right now, there are no theories

as to why this could be occurring or how to resolve it.

History tells us this may have occurred

once prior in the 1960s,

and we are working diligently to get clarification on

if this event is in fact related to

or a repeat a that incident.

All I can do at this time is recommend

to the American people to take extra precautions,

stay indoors, venture outside only if necessary,

and wear masks if you do so.

We will undoubtedly get through this together and we will

provide more information as it comes to us.

In the meantime, please stay inside,

call or text to check on your neighbors and stay safe.

The vice president and I are closely and carefully

monitoring the situation and will communicate details as

they come available.

Thank you. God bless you.

And God bless the United States of America.

- To take care of Judy.

Someone has to do it.

[breathing slowly]

- [Adam] Never should have fucking came here.

- Oh, fuck.

I guess it's me giving an apology after all.

'Cause I'm sorry.

I'm sorry this happened to you, out of all people.

I'm sorry for being a dick.

I'm sorry for what I'm gonna do next.

Maybe in another life, I would've asked you out.

Maybe in another life we could have been together.

I just need to rest.

[bat thuds]

- [Brady] Man. I gotta go take a piss.

- Give me the gun.

I'm tired, man.

I can't defend myself if one of them come after me.

- Just fucking take it, man.

Please. [breathing heavily]

- Stay right here, man.

I'll be back.

[leaves crunching]

[birds chirping]

[belt clinking]

What the fuck, man?

[eerie music]

[cocks shotgun]

What are you doing?

- Thought you were smart, didn't you?

- [Brady] Adam, put the gun down.

- Shut the fuck up!

You brought me out here to kill me just like you did Piper and Judy, didn't you?

- I haven't killed anybody. Adam, you're sick.

- Shut the fuck up!

There's not enough supplies for both of us.

- Adam. Let's go get some help.

- [Adam] Survival the fittest, Brady.

- Adam.

[gun clicks]

- You're not going to.

- Brady. Just fucking do it.

Please.

- Bro.

- Just do.

[breathing heavily]

[shouting] Just do it!

[sad keyboard music]

Fucking do it.

- [Brady] I love you, man.

- Fuck you.

[metallic slice] [head thudding]

[birds calling]

[birds calling]

[ominous music]

[Brady coughing]

- What are you doing on my farm, trespasser?

Are you one of those damn moon walkers? - Sir, sir!

We need help. We need help. - [Farmer] "We"?

It's just you. - My friends were attacked. We need help.

- Where'd all that blood come from?

- We were attacked.

My friends started turning into those things, man.

We need help. We need a hospital.

Call the police.

- You're serious, ain't you?

- I'm serious. - Right. Come on, I got you covered.

Come on.

- Can you put the gun down? - Well, all right, come on.

Let's go. I got some bandages and stuff in the barn.

Come on. Come on.

You go ahead of me. I don't trust you.

[grass crunching]

Put that damn band-aid on, man. That, that, that, that blood's just freaking me out.

[laughing] So you, so you killed 'em, huh?

You killed them moon walkers.

Yeah. You done good, Brady.

You done good. Good.

- I didn't tell you my name. - Yeah. Yeah, you did.

You told me your name. Yeah, Yeah.

Ben told, told me your name when, when I was killing him.

He said, he said they were coming for you, Brady.

They're coming for you, Brady.

[Farmer groaning]

[distorted laughter]

[dramatic music]

[coughing]

[birds chirping]

- If you can see me,

I, I was wrong.

I was very wrong. This is real.

This is really happening.

All of my friends are dead.

Everyone's dead.

[Farmer screaming]

[distorted rock music]

[music intensifies]

[music continues]

[rhythmic dripping]

[ominous music]

- [Cop] I'm here to help.

- Is it over?

- It's over. Your sick little game's over.

- What?

Judy was dead.

She started turning into one of those,

those things, Piper too.

- Do. You know what I think?

I think you killed 'em, you sick fuck.

Now slowly put your hands behind your head.

- They all turned, I'm not kidding man, it happened.

- How many bodies are there, son?

You must be crazy if you think I'm buying a bullshit story like that.

- No, I'm not crazy.

[laughing] I'm not crazy.

I'm not crazy.

I'm not crazy.

I'm not crazy.

I'm not crazy.

I'm not crazy.

I'm not crazy.

I'm not crazy.

I'm not crazy.

[heavy breathing]

[swelling tone] [low pop]

["Moonlight Sonata"]

- [sighs] Still not talking?

Your chart says you've been refusing food as well.

You have to eat, Brady.

Your body needs nourishment.

You know, I didn't wanna break this to you, bud,

but the autopsies on your friends came back yesterday.

You know, had you all have just quarantined,

within about 24 to 48 hours, everything would have been good as new.

None of this would've ever happened.

Sometimes when we're so consumed by something,

we can't distinguish between what is reality

and what is fiction.

Sometimes we see a situation the way we wanna see it.

But you already know that, don't you?

[phone ringing in distance]

Well, I'll be back around six to check on you

and see how these new meds are doing for you.

[loud bang]

[growling] [screaming]

[engine revs]

[upbeat rock music]
