[Music]

pigs are one of the smartest animals on

the planet

their intelligence surpassing that of

three-year-old children dogs and even

some primates much like humans pigs have

their own individual personalities works

likes and dislikes

they pick up tricks faster than dogs and

can learn and respond to their name we

call they are social animals forming

close bonds with the particular others

playing together exploring together

sleeping next to or near each other

communicating constantly with over 20

different vocalizations

despite the stereotype they're generally

clean animals if given enough space to

do so they'll go to the bathroom far

away from where they sleep or eat

they'll collect sticks leaves and other

items from their environment to build a

niche in which to sleep or raise their

young

[Applause]

their maternal instincts are very

powerful they've even been found to seem

to their young while nursing and in

return the piglets learned to run to

their mothers voices

if the mother peeked called South

accidentally lie on top of one of their

piglets the nest will allow the piglet

to simply slip out

[Applause]

[Music]

[Music]

these pigs are living out their days at

an animal sanctuary for the roughly 5

million pigs killed for food every year

in Australia their lives and their fates

are very very different

I didn't come to a sucker spike

going on

areas including

industry in Australia occupation that

[Music]

on australian pig farms live begins here

[Music]

the sale is confined to a small page in

which she can only stand up sit down or

take one or two steps forwards or

backwards she is unable to turn around

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

[Applause]

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

she will remain here for up to six weeks

at a time after being forcefully

impregnated two to three times a year

[Music]

[Laughter]

[Music]

[Applause]

[Music]

during these six weeks she will not see

sunlight and in some farms will be in

constant round-the-clock artificial

lighting

[Music]

each time she gives birth the number of

piglets that are stillborn or mummified

generally increases as do the chances of

health problems for the mother

[Music]

[Music]

at this piggery in New South Wales this

sale gave birth to a litter of stillborn

piglets causing paralysis in her back

legs according to the police report

after activists found and reported her

condition the farmer had called in the

vet who advised him to leave the sow

over the weekend to see if her condition

improved so she was left alone in the

furrowing crate for over four days

[Music]

[Music]

unable to pull herself to the food and

water at the front of her cage she began

to chew on her front legs

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

the weekend passed and she was shot no

charges were laid against the farmer

[Music]

the abdominal pressure and weakened or

relaxed muscles caused by repeated

farrowing small cages diarrhea

respiratory disease or a number of other

health or environmental issues can lead

to the Sowers

internal organs and tissue protruding

out of the body in what is called a

prolapsed

[Music]

[Music]

often the floor of the farrowing crates

will be metal or concrete

[Music]

[Music]

lying on this hard surface for prolonged

periods leads to pressure sores

[Music]

[Music]

the pig farming industry claims that

farrowing crates reduce or eliminate the

occurrence of overlay where the sow

accidentally lies on and crushes her

young in truth farrowing crates prevents

ours from moving away from their piglets

to find a safe place to lie down

[Music]

II

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

[Applause]

[Music]

if they want to lie down they do so very

carefully to try and avoid crushing

their piglets

[Music]

[Music]

me

the constant confinement leads to the

sales muscles being weakened so that

even if she wants to stand up she has

trouble doing so

for this reason some pig farmers force

ours to stand up at least once every day

[Music]

[Music]

here sales season coming and tries

desperately to stand up

this is done in full view of the other

employees

[Music]

through staff abuse neglect and poor

veterinary care sales are susceptible to

a wide array of other injuries

[Music]

[Applause]

[Music]

[Applause]

[Music]

[Applause]

[Music]

[Applause]

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

faulty water taps can lead to sours

being constantly sprayed with cold water

unable to move away

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

[Applause]

with nowhere else to go

she must sleep in her own urine and

excrement until it is washed away by

staff

[Applause]

[Music]

over time she begins to lose her sanity

abiding the bars in frustration and

digging at the floor in an attempt to

build a nest out of nothing

[Music]

[Music]

she savers interaction with her young

[Music]

[Music]

and is forced to watch hopeless as some

fall ill and die

[Music]

[Music]

the runts of the litter those considered

too small or weak compared to their

brothers and sisters to be worth the

trouble of raising a killed by staff

usually from a sharp blow to the head

[Music]

how the piglets are killed or injured

needlessly by frustrated workers

sometimes the dead piglets are collected

quickly other times they are left in the

crates or the aisles of the days

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

Ferro and crates with metal mesh floors

regularly trap piglets legs

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

at a few days of age they are mutilated

without anesthetic or pain relief their

tails are cut off to reduce the

likelihood of them being bitten off due

to boredom and they are later confined

with dozens of other pigs in the

grow-out pens

[Music]

[Music]

their teeth are partially clipped or cut

back to the gum line to reduce injury to

their littermates

a process which can lead to increased

gum and tongue injuries and painful

inflammation or abscesses of the teeth

chunks are cut out of their ears or tags

inserted as a permanent method of

identification

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

at around three to five weeks of age the

piglets are taken from their mother and

moved into weaning pens

[Music]

[Music]

the sow is then moved out of the

farrowing crate cage and into group

housing so that she can be re

impregnated when she is deemed to be

unproductive usually after four

pregnancies spending just under two

years she is sent to slaughter

[Music]

the Rivoli slaughterhouse and Koro and

New South Wales is the largest pig

slaughterhouse in the country killing up

to 1 million pigs per year using the

increasingly popular stunning method of

the carbon dioxide gas chamber which is

touted as the most humane form of

slaughter

despite accounting for over 90% of pigs

killed in Australia the use of the gas

chamber was almost entirely unknown by

the public in early 2014 a small group

of activists set out to infiltrate the

slaughterhouse find the gas chamber and

install hidden cameras in order to

capture world-first footage

[Music]

around 85% of sour pregnancies are

initiated through artificial

insemination the male pigs used referred

to as boars are kept individually in

small pens or cages for most of their

lives the suggested ratio is one boar to

every 15 sours they let out once or

twice per week so that their semen can

be collected

[Music]

[Music]

while there are some differences in the

exact process used it generally involves

farmworkers masturbating bores to

collect their semen sometimes it happens

on site

other times the semen is collected at

the dedicated semen center farms and

delivered fresh to dozens of piggeries

around the country this is an

educational video about collecting semen

from a boar to collect a war you will

need a mounting dummy in a closed-off

area a glove a thermos with a coffee

filter and a board before the bore is

native and in heat female is walked

around the road to place her since then

the boar is allowed to enter the area to

get and move the bourse sniffs fights

and foams at the mouth as he smells the

female eventually he mounts the dummy as

you can see here the boar is biting the

dummy this is considered a type of

foreplay here is an example of a boar

mounting the dummy

he is mimicking the behavior he would

have if actually mating with a female

after mounting pelvic thrusts begin in

the collector grasp the corkscrew-shaped

penis the boars penis is shaped to match

the corkscrew form of the sows cervix

the boar begins to ejaculate and

continues to do so for 10 minutes the

ejaculate is caught in a thermos which

uses a coffee filter to separate the

semen from the gel fraction once the

process is complete the bore will begin

to retract his penis back into the

sheath the collected semen is checked

for concentration and mobility and can

be used for immediate insemination or

can be frozen and stored that is the

process of collecting a bore please do

not try this at home

[Music]

Australia uses the same mounting dummy

process seen here at the largest Siemens

Center in New South Wales which delivers

to around 12 farms across the country

the sow or guilt to be impregnated is

moved into a pen in front of the ball to

increase the chance of a successful

insemination a type of catheter known as

a pork store is then inserted by the

worker into the sales vagina the semen

collected from the bore is attached to

the pork stalk in a raised position and

is gradually drawn inside her over a

period of seven to eight minutes

[Music]

the sow must then be stimulated in a way

that mimics the natural process again

the method here can vary sometimes the

worker will stimulate the sound manually

by applying pressure between her

shoulder and mid-back knee pressure to

her flanks and massaging her vulva and

utter often this is done with the use of

large metal combs

[Music]

other times - sales will be inseminated

at the one time and will often mount

each other mimicking the behavior of the

ball

[Music]

each sour may need to be inseminated

multiple times over a period of several

days until she is confirmed pregnant at

which point she is moved into a sour

store

[Music]

Sal stalls a small cages similar to

those inside the farrowing crates where

the sow is unable to turn around she

remains here day and night for between 6

weeks as suggested by the model code of

practice and the full 16 week duration

of her pregnancy

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

[Applause]

[Music]

although the pig industry has declared a

voluntary phasing out of sow stalls by

2017 this is deceptive rather than being

a ban on sow stalls it'll simply be a

reduction in the amount of time pigs

will be forced to live continuously in

them down to five days per pregnancy and

this limit will not be enforced or

monitored because it is voluntary and

not legally mandated

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

if it is determined that the sour would

not go on to produce a healthy litter of

piglets as originally thought she's

marked for slaughter

[Music]

Sall stalls are used because they

prevent the aggression found in the

alternative group sale housing

[Music]

the sails are packed into small concrete

pens for weeks or months at a time

deprived of sunlight fresh air and any

sort of mental stimulation

[Applause]

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

inevitably they turn on each other just

as humans might in the same conditions

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

after they are taken away from their

mothers piglets are moved into Weiner

pens

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

[Laughter]

as they grow in size they moved into

different pens as their status increases

from wiener to grower to finish up

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

in order to save space and money they

have packed tightly together often

forced to live eat and sleep in their

own urine and excrement

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

facing the same boredom and lack of

mental stimulation suffered by their

mothers in group housing they turn to

fighting and cannibalism even with their

tails haven't been cut off by staff

[Music]

[Music]

at five to six months of age they have

reached slaughter weight having found

the gas chamber activists returned the

next night to install hidden cameras

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

the pigs that died on the farm

are disposed of on the same property one

method of disposal seen here at

Guangdong piggery one of the largest in

New South Wales is composting the dead

pigs are piled up and gradually covered

with hay

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

the bones of the countless numbers

buried underneath are eventually pushed

out onto the surface

[Music]

[Music]

in 2012 and 13 Animal Liberation

Victoria investigated three separate

free-range pig farms approved by the

RSPCA

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

he's getting bit on here

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

while not all free-range pig farms may

look like this the peaks all end up at

the same slaughterhouses as their

factory farmed counterparts

[Music]

the pigs ready for slaughter are herded

onto transport trucks at the average

weight of 97 kilograms

they are afforded 0.35 meters squared of

space each as they are driven often long

distances to the abattoir without food

water or protection from temperature

extremes such as those found in the

middle of winter or summer they can be

withheld water for up to 24 hours

[Music]

[Music]

[Applause]

[Music]

once they finally reach the

slaughterhouse they are unloaded into

small concrete holding hands often with

the use of an electric cattle prod

[Music]

[Music]

[Applause]

[Music]

[Music]

[Applause]

[Music]

here in the holding pens they wait until

it is their time to be killed

they are then forced up the race to the

kill floor

[Music]

[Music]

[Applause]

[Music]

[Music]

kids are forced into the gas chamber by

use of an electric cattle prod from

inside the chamber they can hear the

screams of their litter mates so they

try in vain to escape

carbon dioxide is a heavy gas so it

doesn't fill up the whole chamber heats

are loaded into a two or three at a time

[Music]

every weekday between two and three

thousand Peaks lowered into this gas

chamber many thousands more and other

habit was across the country

[Music]

gas chambers are now being used at

around 15 of Australia's largest pig

slaughterhouses the alternative

electrical stunning is not any better

[Music]

Electrical stunning we'll never be 100%

effective

the demand for peat meat means that the

slaughterhouse cannot afford to slow

down the line the pigs who make it

through improperly stoned

[Music]

[Music]

[Laughter]

[Music]

[Applause]

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

after their throats have been slit and

they've been bled out

pigs are dropped into tanks of scalding

water in order to soften their skin and

remove bristles and hair

over the years Animal Protection groups

have received numerous tip offs about

facilities where pigs have made it

through to the scolding tanks still

conscious finally meeting their deaths

by drowning

[Music]

[Music]

peeps are not the only animals who

suffer in Australian farms and

slaughterhouses

in the year to June 2012 five hundred

and fifty 1 million broiler chickens

were slaughtered for meat in Australia

chickens are the largest number of

intensively farmed animals in Australia

and also have the shortest life of all

animals kept in intensive meat

production meat chickens in total

confinement systems are farmed in large

sheds shed sizes vary but a typical new

shed is 150 metres long and 15 metres

wide and crams in around 40,000 chickens

the larger sheds can hold up to 60,000

chickens are slaughtered between 6 to 8

weeks of age at around 3 kilograms

normally the type of chicken 96 days to

reach a peak of two kilograms now with

the use of selective breeding combined

with artificial lighting and drug use to

accelerate rapid growth chickens can

reach 3 kilograms in just 35 days this

rapid growth causes skeletal and

metabolic disorders resulting in

suffering pain and death 90% of chickens

have a detectable abnormal gait at the

age they're slaughtered

turkeys are raised in similar conditions

with an average of 10,000 to 14,000 per

shed equating to six birds per square

metre

surgical procedures including DB King

and toe cutting are carried out without

anesthetic or pain relief

[Music]

sleeping and feeding patterns are

distorted through artificial lighting to

maximize growth rate through selective

breeding both male and female turkeys

and nearly twice the size of their wild

counterparts their legs are not support

their weight

wounds from overcrowded conditions

becomes smothered in waste causing

painful infections three to five million

turkeys are killed every year in

Australia at a major slaughterhouse

south of Sydney

they are punched kicked and beaten while

being shattered upside down onto the

slaughter line

[Music]

there she white often causes their beat

they're off

[Music]

over 8 million Ducks are killed annually

in Australia after living for six to

seven weeks in crowded sheds with little

light and little room Ducks are aquatic

animals yet in both intensive and

free-range farms are denied water the

swimming bathing or even dipping their

heads leading to a range of diseases

disorders and injuries including vitamin

deficiency blindness lameness dislocated

joints broken bones and breast blisters

[Music]

at any given time there are

approximately 11 million layer hens

confined to tiny wire cages with up to

20 other hands each allocated the space

smaller than an a4 sheet of paper

they're unable to stretch their wings or

express any normal behaviors such as

dust-bathing perching or foraging

to stop their hands from picking each

other to death

their beaks are trimmed by a hot blade

when they are still cheers male chicks

are considered useless to the egg

industry and aghast or ground up alive

at one day old

regardless of whether the female chicks

are going into a caged bar or free-range

system

hens will naturally live for around 10

years but most layer hens in Australia

are sent to slaughter as soon as they

exceed their productive use by a date in

all egg production systems from cage to

free-range hens are considered spent

from just 18 months

like humans cows must give birth in

order to produce milk Australian dairy

farmers will repeatedly impregnate cows

and remove their babies in order to

collect and sell the milk intended for

them the mothers are known to grieve for

days most of the male calves between

700,000 and 900,000 per year are

considered waste products of the dairy

industry and assent to slaughter at a

week old

their mothers are killed at around four

years once their production of milk

slows their natural lifespan is 15 to 20

years cattle killed for beef undergo

painful procedures without anesthetic or

pain relief including dehorning

castration

[Music]

and Brandi with a foot higher

[Music]

they are sent to slaughter at 18 months

of age a captive bolt gun shoot a metal

rod into their skull to stun them

[Applause]

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

commonly lambs are put in a restraint

device and have their tail cut off

without pain relief

they're killed at six to eight months of

age

[Music]

the question has to be asked is any of

this really necessary

[Music]

[Applause]
