Previously on Deadman's Curse...
[groans]
Oh!
[Narrator] In the hunt for Slumach's lost gold mine...
Stay focussed.
We gotta follow the prospectors that followed Slumach.
-Holy! -Wow!
It goes!
[Narrator] ...every clue
has pushed the team to their limit.
[groans]
With a busted-ass back, there ain't much you can do.
Just jump right there.
[Narrator] Now,
with time running out on the season...
...will a controversial voice from the past
finally lead the team to the motherlode?
-You're kidding me, right? -No way!
[♪♪♪♪♪♪]
Look what I got!
[Adam] Hey, hey, hey.
[Narrator] After weeks of expedition
searching for Slumach's gold...
No pushing.
I'm just trying to keep them alive
before the presentation.
[Narrator] ...Adam Palmer takes an evening with his boys.
[Adam] Before we go in,
no fires,
no hitting, no fighting in there, okay?
[Narrator] They're at a presentation
hosted by the Lost Creek Gold Mine Society.
[emcee] Good evening, everyone.
[Narrator] Tonight's topic--
lost gold prospector Stuart Brown.
[Adam] I have heard this slide show a lot.
No matter how many times you hear it,
you always get a little something new.
Stu Brown tried to get the government to go in there.
[Adam] Stu Brown claims he had found
gold nuggets the size of walnuts--
just like the Jackson letter.
Yeah, Stu Brown--
well...
there's something not right.
The government said,
"Well, you can't go in and mine in a park."
He said, "You don't have to mine anything.
You reach down, you pull up nuggets."
[Narrator] Adam's looking for a new lead,
but instead finds an old rival--
prospector Daryl Friesen.
Adam's become my sort of nemesis.
Stuart Brown, he thinks, is just a load of nonsense.
Is the mine located high up?
Is it lower down,
like we see in the next picture?
Daryl will find it one day.
He's certainly out there looking for it all the time.
[Adam] Daryl's probably
selling treasure maps in the parking lot.
-Out of his trunk, yeah. -Yeah.
He always has to be...
better than me...
Thank you.
[applause]
...but if it wasn't for Stu Brown,
the legend would have died years ago.
I think Stuart Brown is legit, yeah.
[Adam] The Stu Brown thing is all made up.
Daryl means well.
He's an Internet prospector.
You know, he read a book on lost treasure,
and this is his target--
Slumach's gold.
He's also looking for Slumach's lost gold mine.
Who do you think's gonna find it first?
[Adam] Oh, really? [laughs] Wow.
[Narrator] Stu Brown's story
and his incredible claim
begins in the early '70s.
While studying satellite images
for British Columbia's forestry department,
the veteran surveyor claims
he stumbled upon the motherlode...
...but it was located in a provincial park.
[Adam] Well, it's against the law
to mine in a park.
I mean, you're looking at jail time.
[Narrator] A loyal Canadian, Stu followed the rules,
and began a 13-year letter-writing campaign
to the government.
In these letters,
he urged them to claim the treasure--
"gold worth billions,"
"nuggets up to your ankles"--
and use that gold to pay the national deficit,
benefitting all Canadian citizens.
But Stu's plea fell on deaf ears,
so the gold remains unclaimed
and Stu's story unproven.
The prospecting community
is still divided over his story...
...and Adam and Kru are no different.
If you make extreme claims like that,
you need extreme evidence.
He never produced any evidence of that gold.
Because he wasn't able to. Adam, you don't go--
Well, I was able to.
I went looking for it many times.
-Yeah, but-- -I followed his map.
[Narrator] The map is a sketch by Slumach historian Don Waite.
Drawn from memory after a meeting with Stu Brown,
it indicates a deep sinkhole full of gold,
clues mentioned in the Jackson letter
and the location of Slumach's lost mine.
It literally says,
"Terrarosa Lake, and you follow this stream down,
and there's a sinkhole of gold."
Okay, well, I followed that stream down,
and there's no sinkhole of gold.
[Narrator] It's a map well studied
and location well travelled by Adam
in his two decades of searching.
Day two,
going to a couple of locations on the Terrarosa Glacier.
Kru's done an awful lot of research on this.
Yeah, you've done the research, but I've been there.
I've been all over North Terrarosa
and it's not here.
None of it adds up.
As far as I can tell,
he was just making this up.
First of all,
this is scribbles on a piece of paper.
[Adam] Exactly. Yeah, you think--
[Kru] This isn't GPS.
It's not even really a map, like...
[laughing]
What do you got that's better than this?
I think your answer's right here.
Rob Nicholson's interview with Stu Brown.
Rob Nicholson's a writer,
he's a historian.
One of the only people to ever record Stu Brown,
let alone gain his trust.
[Narrator] In 1989,
Nicholson recorded
the first and only interview with Stu Brown.
Stu describes in detail
a rock dam and a waterfall near the gold.
[Taylor] We've got the transcript here
and the thing that pops out to me
is there's one censored area here.
Rob Nicholson removed one name...
and that name was a creek.
If you don't have the name of this creek,
then it could be anywhere.
Without that one key, where you gonna be?
It's the indicator.
We just gotta find the name of this creek.
[Kru] If there's a possibility,
it's something I want to check out.
[Taylor] We definitely have to follow
every kind of lead that we get,
even if Adam says it's not worth it.
We shouldn't discount anything that is out there.
We gotta have open minds.
All of us are on board except for you.
I feel outnumbered.
I feel--
[laughs] I know!
I got one and I was like, "Yeah!"
Then I got two and I was like, "Ooh, ooh!"
What now, Adam!
-All right you guys! -That says a lot.
Do you guys want to do this?
[Adam] Okay, fine! Okay, fine!
[Kru laughing]
Stu Brown's legit, and I can't wait to prove it.
Either prove it or disprove it.
Well, you're not the only one
to go down this rabbit hole of Stu Brown.
Don't think for one minute
that I haven't heard this before.
[Narrator] On the other side of the city...
Daryl Friesen has been following
a different set of clues to Slumach's gold.
I've been involved in searching for this thing
since, really, 1984, when I first heard about it.
Back in the day when nobody was looking,
there was no Adam Palmer,
there was no sort of...
competition.
[Narrator] Like Adam,
Daryl has been a member
of the Lost Creek Gold Mine Society
for decades.
It is 100% completely ingrained in who I am.
I've spent so much time
thinking about it over the years.
[Narrator] And those years of research
point to Stu Brown.
One day,
I was just sitting around, surfing the net,
and I went to eBay,
and I typed in
"Stuart Brown Lost Creek Mine",
and this auction pops up,
and inside this auction
are Stuart Brown's original letters.
[Narrator] Stu's letters to the government
with his claims to the location of the lost gold
are convincing...
...but it was another item in this auction
that had Daryl sold.
Stuart Brown says when he was up in the country,
he took a picture of the canyon.
[Narrator] A canyon Stu claims
is located in the general area of the gold...
...a landmark en route to the motherlode.
On this eBay auction
were the letters and the snap photo of the canyon
for sale.
[Narrator] The photo
is a missing piece of the puzzle,
a new clue in the 100-year-old mystery.
[Daryl] Holy [bleep]. Look at this.
Oh, will you look at that?
If you look to the mountains there,
it's Terrarosa Glacier.
Stuart Brown describes this location
like a rock dam
that looks like an old dam
like the Hoover Dam in the States.
[Narrator] Cross-referencing the photo with aerial maps,
Daryl believes he's found Stu Brown's secret location
and the source of Slumach's gold.
[Daryl] Right there.
That's the location
that Stuart Brown was talking about--
the rock dam that looks like a real dam.
That's the lake
where Stuart Brown
waded up to his ankles in gold nuggets.
That's where I want to go look.
I have found this thing that nobody else has found
and I'm going to be one
to share it with all these prospectors
and they're all going to be in awe.
[Narrator] But accessing the Terrarosa
must be timed with precision.
The weather window for searching for the mine
is usually like a two-week window,
when the snow
is completely melted from the canyon--
and that's now.
Throughout the legend,
this has been the time to go search.
Right now the door's open,
and in, like, a week in a half,
that door's closed for the rest of the year.
[Narrator] But the weather isn't Daryl's only motivation.
It's not just a myth.
It's a very, very personal search for me.
My dad, he was my reason
for trying to prove that the thing existed.
He taught me how to pan.
When I'm 12 years old, 13 years old,
in my first pan, I found a flake...
...and I miss him every day.
[Narrator] Since his father's death
only two years ago,
Daryl's driven with a new purpose.
I want to go in there
and sort of finish off that particular chapter for me,
and the only way to do that
is to go to the Stuart Brown rock dam location,
and I want to just see it for myself,
get there and say, you know, I got there,
and hopefully,
my father will be pleased that I got there.
"It's over.
We finished it.
I finished it.
Okay?
Love you."
you know?
That's what I want to do.
[Kru] We're going to meet the author of this book,
Rob Nicholson.
He's one of the few people
that have ever even spoken with Stu Brown about this gold.
He's actually recorded Stu Brown.
He's met with Stu Brown.
[Narrator] Historian and veteran Rob Nicholson
holds a key clue
to finding Stu Brown's secret location.
[Nicholson] I don't think
Stu Brown was lying one bit at all.
He was a very credible man.
He told me where he got it from.
No, I'm not telling anybody.
Just to be in the legion alone is a big thing.
It's an honour.
You've served?
I was in Gagetown with the combat engineers.
Oh, wow. That means you blew things up.
Oh I love it,
every chance I got.
I've heard a lot about Stu Brown,
but you're the professional in this area.
Well, Stu Brown--
I met Stu Brown.
He was a really nice fella.
So you know the exact location of where this nugget creek is?
Yes, I do...
and I won't go back.
There's stuff out there that you cannot explain.
There's no reasonable explanation for them.
How should I put this? I'm not sure how to put it.
I guess just tell it like it is, right?
I had an experience up there
that I don't want to repeat in my lifetime,
thank you very much.
In the quest to find Slumach's lost gold,
the search for a critical clue...
There's stuff out there that you cannot explain.
[Narrator] ...provides a pause
to reflect on one man's account
of his chilling trip to Terrarosa in the early '80s.
The last time I was in there--
it's very steep climbing up.
Where it started to level out,
where you can stand up...
I stood up,
and in front of me about--
I don't know, 50 feet in front of me,
was this entity
that looked like an extremely thin man,
and it said,
"Retreat and live, proceed and die."
I did back down,
and I ran out.
It took me about seven hours to run out
and it took me a day and a half to walk in.
I was scared.
And I was deadly sick for about six months
and I don't want to repeat that.
I was-- I was given a choice.
I took my choice and I won't go back.
Wow. Oh, man.
There is absolutely
something strange going on in the Upper Pitt.
I had no idea about any of this,
and now that I'm hearing this out of your mouth,
it's... it's next level.
What do you think it was?
It wasn't...
earthly...
I don't think at all.
It was levitating.
I will not go back to find out.
I had an experience myself,
I've heard of some others that had.
I don't like admitting to a curse,
but, like, look at the evidence.
It's starting to add up.
You know?
There's things that happen out there
that don't make sense.
My own opinion is
if you go in with the proper intent--
where Stu Brown went in not to get rich
but to benefit everybody,
where when I went in--
I'll be honest--
I was going to buy castles, and yachts, and airplanes,
and you name it,
so my intent wasn't pure enough,
and it stopped me.
Your choice.
What's your definition of pure?
You know?
Because, like, I'm here for gold--
that's a given--
and I'm not here to mess things up.
I'm not here to do bad.
But still, in the back of your head,
you wonder, you know?
Pretty much,
this is the only transcript of Stu Brown, eh?
Written transcript, yes.
Is he talking about a creek here?
Because it says right here,
I told you to go up the blank creek.
Yeah. Up to a certain creek.
Yes.
So did he point this out on a map for you?
Oh, yeah.
What's the name?
What area?
Well, I mean,
I shouldn't be telling you the name of the creek.
I don't want you to go up there and getting hurt.
This is a mystery that needs to be solved.
If you would like to go through my research material
and make your own choice,
you are more than welcome to do that,
but I'm not going to lead you up there,
because I don't want anybody's death
on my conscience.
Hmm.
[Narrator] With a photo and map as his guide,
prospector Daryl Friesen
is also on the path of Stuart Brown.
It's turning into fall on us very quickly.
It's over within two weeks' time,
the search for this year,
as far as in the higher elevations go.
Any of the parties out there
that are taking the Lost Mine seriously this year
and trying to get in there,
they're all doing it right now.
Now I want to go in there
and find the gold.
[Narrator] Daryl's trek
is from Pemberton, B. C. south
to the southern tip of Terrarosa Glacier.
We have this narrow window, so we're going for it.
The Stuart Brown location and the rock dam--
it's an insanely difficult place to get to on foot,
and it does take a special breed
to be able to hike in there.
There are other ways to go about it,
but it's good to check this route out
as a possible way to get in there,
to avoid having to take a helicopter, right?
[Narrator] Almost 15 years ago,
on one of his first expeditions looking for Slumach's gold,
Daryl's life changed forever.
We're flying up over Spindle Canyon.
There's, like, the gust of wind,
and the helicopter starts to shake...
...and we drop out of the sky.
Whoosh! Right out of the sky.
The question that's going through my head is
when's the pain coming
and when am I going to die, right?
Lucky to survive.
That sort of changed everything for me
and sort of even looking at the curse
and looking at life in general, basically, right?
Never again, nope.
Never again.
I'm putting on my brand-new pair of hiking boots.
Fresh expedition, fresh start.
It's go time.
There's no better time to go look for it than right now.
I've been researching this thing for a very, very long time.
Flying up over there, gathering all the clues,
putting it all together.
It's given me
my conviction that, yes, this is where it is.
I have enough evidence.
I know this is the right spot.
[Narrator] Back in Vancouver,
Kru has earned Rob's trust
and access to his research.
Ooh.
The photo albums, and maps, and letters, and...
And here's something
you're really gonna want to listen to--
it's the Stu Brown tape.
The interview I had with him back in '89.
Wow.
So this is the only copy, eh?
[Nicholson] That's the only copy.
Uncensored.
The tapes with the actual information's
going to give us the actual location.
For him to trust me with it was huge.
It was like a passing of the torch.
Thank you.
[Nicholson] Okay. Good luck on everything.
[Kru] I just wanna get it done.
[Daryl] Here we are, walking up Sloquet Creek.
[Narrator] With miserable weather,
the trek has been tough for prospector Daryl Friesen.
[Daryl] I gotta hell of a long ways to go
if I'm going to get to the rock dam location.
You know, I can already feel it now at this point,
but, you know,
I gotta push myself as hard as I can.
[Narrator] He's determined to find Stu Brown's rock dam
and honour his father's spirit.
[Daryl] Gotta admit,
I'm really starting to feel my age.
But got to get there, man.
Don't have any choice in the matter.
All right, so this is camp for the night...
right here.
It's pouring rain...
...and there's no point in going any further.
It's pissing me off, but that's all right.
First-class accommodation.
[Narrator] Back at their Seabird Island base,
Kru has a case to make to the team.
Wait till you get a load of this.
Check this out.
We got all of his files on Stu Brown.
We've got all of his pictures of his actual expeditions.
[Don] He gave this up?
Dude, I couldn't believe it.
We've got maps, we've got letters,
all the correspondence to all the MPs.
All right, so we got all these letters,
we got pictures.
Did he tell you anything about the creek?
We have the actual interview.
Check this out.
It's called a cassette tape.
-You might not know that. -No.
Back in the '80s, this is how they played music.
[Taylor] Right.
But it's also how
he recorded the conversation with Stu Brown.
-You heard that? -Yeah.
Stoney Creek.
When he said "Stoney Creek,"
I mean, like, every creek's got stones in it.
[laughs]
Like, come on now. Good luck finding it, right?
That's what you need an Adam for!
So, Stoney Creek...
right there.
[Kru] And you were in the north?
Well, yeah, we were actually coming in north
from Fire Mountain.
Stoney Creek is actually quite a bit south.
I didn't do this trip just once or twice,
I did this four times,
looking through here.
-On the north side? -On the north side.
[Narrator] The map that Adam has used for years
appears to point to a completely different location.
Well, either somebody's wrong or somebody's lying about this.
-So... -One second.
Terrarosa Lake is our centre point.
Then you have Fire Lake.
But if you exaggerate this last line
to the Terrarosa...
...and Terrarosa Lake is the centre point...
and twist it.
That lines up to Stoney Creek.
-Exactly. -Stoney Creek.
Seriously, good job, man.
[Adam] Put an X on that spot.
Well, either somebody's wrong or somebody's lying about this.
[Narrator] In their hunt
for Stu Brown's mystery location...
the team is faced with conflicting intel.
A Stoney Creek at one end of a glacier
and an old treasure map that points to the other...
Terrarosa Lake is the centre point.
[Narrator] ...but Taylor sees something
the others don't.
That lines up to Stoney Creek.
-Exactly. -Stoney Creek.
Put an X on that spot.
[Narrator] A shift in orientation
means the old map
now aligns with the new location.
[Kru] What do you think?
This is probably the best map I've seen so far.
Sometimes, you've got to start at the beginning,
so how do you do that?
New people with new eyes-- that's huge.
The amount of time we have--
let's fly right there to Stoney Creek.
This is late summer.
You have such a short window.
If you have an opportunity to get up there,
just chopper in,
that saves days.
If that's the way
he accessed the Terrarosa Glacier,
let's go in right where his starting point is
and just follow.
Hey, if you're excited, I'm excited.
The only problem is,
is once you get to this point,
you still have a day's travel to get to the glacier.
You going to be able to do that?
How's your back?
[groans]
[Narrator] After a tough glacier crossing
saw an old injury flare up...
I'm starting to feel that fall now.
[Narrator] ...Kru is on mandated rest.
[Kru] Being injured sucks, recovery's even harder.
I mean, there's nothing worse than sitting on the sidelines,
but it's a team,
and I know my team will be strong,
and I know they'll finish.
We gotta check it out.
But if I can't, you can.
I'll go take a look at it.
[Adam] Well, yeah, this is her map.
You can't draw this map and not go.
-[laughs] -Okay, that is true, yes.
I've had enough of following other people's maps.
You take your map and I'll follow you!
All right.
We're at Upper Stave near the Terrarosa.
The clouds have cleared, it's a beautiful day.
My energy level's up.
[Narrator] Following his own set of clues
to Stu Brown's secret location,
Daryl Friesen pushes on.
[Daryl] I am closing in
on one of the most famous locations
in Lost Mine history--
the Stuart Brown rock dam location.
[Narrator] But the most challenging terrain
lies ahead--
a massive gain in elevation.
I mean, I'm an okay hiker, but I'm not a mountaineer.
Climbing that hill...
...it's going to be epic.
[Taylor] So are we getting close
to where we're supposed to be?
Pretty soon.
[Narrator] Meanwhile,
Taylor and Adam are closing in on their goal.
Where we're going, actually, the headwaters of Stoney Creek,
is pretty remote.
-There's Stoney Creek. -Yep.
-Well, there's-- -Someone's there.
Who's that?
Take us down here.
[Narrator] Two separate paths have led to one destination.
There's only one guy, I think,
that could possibly be in that helicopter--
Adam Palmer.
How did I know that's who that would be?
[Adam] What are you doing here?
You lost?
No, not at all.
[Adam] I don't think he was expecting us.
I wasn't expecting him.
Did you walk up here?
[Adam] Well, Daryl and I are polar opposites.
Daryl is the one reading about these legends,
and I'm the one actually looking for them.
Long time no see.
Oh, man.
He's a very talented guy,
and I wish him the best of luck,
but I hate being in his shadow
and being second place.
I'm just getting over the fact that you're here.
-What are you doing? -We're going up to Terrarosa.
[chuckles]
Yeah, I'm nervous as hell.
My concern?
That he's just come in to seize the day
and sort of take the location.
[Adam] I don't think
Daryl knows what he's doing out here.
I think he walked up here,
and he's just lucky to actually get up this far.
You're familiar with the Stuart Brown letters, right?
Yep.
They had a picture in it
that Stuart took when he was up there.
-Yep. -I have it--
and I'm the only one who has it.
Look at that photograph.
I do not think Stuart Brown is full of B. S.
Adam in his heart
knows how important that picture is--
that proves that Stuart was here.
That's worth investigating.
That's where I'm going.
[Narrator] With only one route to the rock dam,
there's little choice but to join forces.
Honestly, it's more knowledge.
The more knowledge we have at this point,
the more we're going to find.
I need to see it for myself.
So let's get to where that picture is
and prove it.
How steep is that anyway?
You're going to find out.
[Adam] The fact that he's here now
and not behind a computer,
I'll give him that.
I don't know if teaming up with him is the best choice.
[Daryl] I've done a lot of Google Earth studying
and have a sort of understanding of the reality.
[Adam] Well, it's just like Google Earth--
just instead of the mouse, you use your legs.
[laughs]
We're not leaving him behind.
I don't care who you are,
I would never leave you behind in that terrain.
[Daryl] A butterfly keeps landing on everybody.
[Taylor] Definitely a sign.
[Adam] It's a messenger.
[Taylor] He's still there.
Show us the way.
All right, let's get moving, man,
before my dress falls off.
You ready?
Let's go this way.
[Adam] I'll just follow you, Daryl, no problem.
[laughing]
[Narrator] High above Pitt Lake...
[Daryl] On Google Earth, this looked easier.
[Narrator] ...Daryl, Taylor and Adam
continue their 23-kilometre hike--
to what they believe could be Stu Brown's fabled rock dam.
As the crow flies,
it's, like, four or five kilometres.
The problem is we don't have wings.
We have to get from Stoney Creek to the top of a glacier.
That's 3,000 feet of elevation we have to gain
and you don't gain it in a straight line.
It's lots of ups and downs.
We have, you know,
our backpacks with 50, 60 pounds.
That's slowing us down.
Now we have Daryl with us, so that's slowing us down.
You know, we're talking two days of hard travel.
[Daryl] I gotta chill for a second.
I'm going to vomit.
Just for a second.
[Daryl gags]
[Adam] The funny thing about the mountains
is you'll see the real people
when you put them in that environment.
When you push people to their limits,
that's when you actually see who they really are.
[Adam] Is that a boundary marker?
-Boundary marker for Garibaldi. -Yeah.
[Narrator] From the edge of Garibaldi Park...
-[Daryl] Wow. -[Adam] There it is.
[Daryl] It just looks epic.
This is the first time I've seen Terrarosa Glacier
from the ground.
It's reaching a target
I've been thinking about for years.
Trying to get to.
It feels fantastic.
[Narrator] Terrarosa--
named after the red earth and high mineral content.
[Daryl] Iron.
[Adam] Back when the earth was fire.
It's got tons of indications pointing to minerals.
The quartz vein runs all along there,
along the bluff,
runs alongside the mountain,
and then sort of disappears around the corner
into the area
that we are really interested in going.
Just like the Yellow Brick Road.
[Daryl] We're closing in on our canyon.
I'm enthusiastic about it.
I think we-- we're going to find something.
I really do.
Now we just gotta get to the right spot.
Because there's something there.
I hope.
-Shall we go make camp? -Let's do that.
[chuckles]
Doing okay over there?
Ask me in about five minutes.
Is it fun watching me do this?
-Yeah. -Is it?
It kind of is.
Haven't you ever set up tents before?
I'm going to go sleep in the [bleep] bush.
Hey, I'll come help. Give me two seconds.
Yeah, he's tired.
He's hiked for two days.
We flew in on a chopper.
I think we should just put up Daryl's tent up for him.
-Yeah? -I don't know where he went.
Okay.
I mean, I don't know how to set up this tent, but...
I'm assuming the red to red...
and then the tan to tan.
You're probably right.
[Taylor] It's interesting
to see how people react
when they are out in the woods sort of thing.
[Adam] So push it through to you?
I'm glad Taylor's there,
because Taylor just kind of takes it over.
I have no idea how to even set this thing up.
You can't even do it?
[Adam] I can't even do it.
Loops down into the back.
What?
She's my new best friend now, I'll tell you that much.
She set this tent up.
Yeah, it's not straightforward, let's just say that.
[Adam] No matter how much we differ,
I think there's a reason for him being here
and I think that reason is
for us to finally go up here together.
[Taylor] And that should be good.
I'm not here for a competition of ego--
I'm better than him, he's better than me.
Maybe the three of us can get there.
Thank you very much, both of you, for helping.
-Thank Taylor, not me. -You were great, thank you.
No worries.
[Daryl] I don't know what's going to happen.
Tomorrow, the game really begins.
Yeah, this spot sure looks like it.
[Taylor] Yep.
What do you think?
See these ribs right there?
[Taylor] That has to be that right there.
Here, go stand over there.
[Narrator] On the last leg of their journey,
the team arrives
at a key landmark
en route to Stu Brown's rock dam...
[Adam] Hold up there for a sec.
[Daryl] All right.
[Narrator] ...the location of Daryl's auction photo.
[Daryl] You can see the rock bluff there.
You can see the landmass in the middle of the lake.
[Adam] Look back at us for a sec.
Channel Stu Brown into it.
Oh, you're going to like this, Daryl.
[Daryl] This is the beginning of vindication for me.
See that?
That's you...
and there's Stu Brown.
[Daryl] Absolutely incredible.
What we've done is we've proved Stuart Brown was here.
That's the spot, 100%.
-There's no two ways about it. -You nailed it.
It's undeniable this is the spot in the photo.
What Stuart Brown says in his letter is,
"I'm enclosing a picture taken in the general area."
We're closing in, we're close.
I've spent thousands of dollars on this thing,
I've spent years on this thing,
and if we get there,
and we find what Stuart Brown says he found,
that will validate everything I've done
over all the years,
and complete the quest for me.
What's next?
Getting to Stuart Brown's rock dam location
and finding gold nuggets.
[Adam] Oh, I have a feeling we're getting close.
[Taylor] Holy.
[Adam] There it is!
[Daryl] That's it, man.
That's it.
That's absolutely incredible.
We finally reached the Stuart Brown rock dam--
and it's right over there.
That's where Stuart Brown reached down,
walked in gold up to his ankles.
[Adam] So you say.
That's where the motherlode is supposed to be--
and that's where we have to go.
Now that I'm here,
I just wanna say,
"Hey, Dad, I made it here.
I got this far."
[Adam] Yeah, you did.
[Daryl] I hope, Dad,
that me getting there and finishing this off
can make you proud,
and...
and, yeah,
and that you are up there watching.
You've got that wound in your heart
when your parents die.
Even my mom, too.
Christ.
They both died, like a year apart.
I'm doing it for all of us.
And I'd like to think that they're both with me.
[Daryl] That's it man. That's it.
[Narrator] With the rock dam in sight...
That's absolutely incredible.
I hope, Dad,
that me getting there and finishing this off
can make you proud.
It gives you a new reason to go there.
That's a better reason than gold, you know,
for him to be here.
[Narrator] The rock dam,
and the pool
where Stu Brown claims
to have found billions in gold,
is before them.
[Adam] You gotta go this way.
This way.
[Daryl] Um...
[Adam] You have to give him credit
because the real Daryl
is someone that follows their heart,
follows their goals,
and will do whatever it takes to get there.
Let's take this natural rock.
This ledge right here-- do you see that ledge?
Give me that.
The mountains put everyone on a level playing field.
We can make fun of each other,
but you know what,
if he's falling off a cliff,
I'm going to grab him and I'm going to pull him up,
[Daryl panting]
You need to get from point A to point B,
and if you don't do that together,
it's not going to work.
[Adam] Keep going. No, no, go.
Keep going?
[Taylor] You've waited 20 years for this, so...
-[Adam] This one's for you. -[Taylor] ...by all means.
I'm standing on a spot
that I've been trying to get to for 20 years.
He said he stood at this rock dam, right?
Right here.
You, like, burned over here.
You know how long
I've been waiting for that moment?
If there's any hope
of there being anything with Stuart Brown--
-It's like down deep. -Right there.
-In the crack there? -In the crack there, right?
Clearly, nobody can walk in here
up to their ankles in gold right now.
What gold does
is gold sinks to the very bottom.
So, if we want to find the gold of the legend--
it's underneath there.
-[Adam] We have to dive down. -Yeah.
[Narrator] Adam suits up for the bone-chilling cold.
We're going to have to put some rocks in here
to weight me down.
If there's anything at this location,
it's in the water.
Check.
So, I'm going in the water.
Right in that crack,
deep as you can.
Yeah, there are, like, massive boulders blocking it.
So, basically,
you can't get right down to the crack.
I can. I can. I gotta lift them out.
Lift them out.
The glacier's receded a hell of a lot.
[Narrator] As the glacier melts,
rock and debris are pushed downhill,
funneling into the pool
and caught in the dam.
[Adam] All this water is trying to rush over this dam,
but any minerals that are heavy enough
sink to the bottom and get jammed in this crack.
It's a perfect trap.
The only problem is
that there's a ton of debris
that's piled up over the years...
...so you have to drag everything out of the crack
one by one.
There's one big sucker in there.
Can you get it out, or?
-I'm gonna try. -You're gonna try?
Come on, you can do it, man.
[Narrator] Adam has to clear the rocks
without getting washed over the edge.
Holy...
-What? -What is it?
[Daryl] You are [bleep] kidding me, right?
[Taylor] No way!
There's, like, four more where those came from.
No!
-Daryl! -Holy!
I opened up that crack completely.
Holy...
[Narrator] High on Terrarosa Glacier,
Adam has made a shocking discovery.
-What the-- -What?
What is it?
-You're kidding me, right? -No way!
There's, like, four more where those came from.
[Taylor] No!
[Daryl] Holy...
[Taylor] That's a clear crystal.
[Daryl] Crystal mixed with, like, a copper.
[Taylor] Quartz and copper.
Look at that one, look at that one,
look at that one.
[Taylor] This is insane.
[Narrator] Copper, quartz and crystal--
all key indicators of gold.
I mean, if you got this down there,
maybe the nuggets are deeper.
I took out that huge boulder,
everything was jammed right there.
That's all real, man.
That's no [bleep].
Keep looking. It's all real, man.
Every rock I grab from the bottom of this crack
is showing signs of gold.
A bunch of different minerals--
iron oxide,
quartz crystal.
[Daryl] Oh, wow. Look.
[Taylor] That is beautiful.
Look it in that--
that's incredible!
I saw way better.
-Better? Better! -Better.
I mean, after all these years searching for Slumach's gold,
maybe this is it.
There's more in here.
It's supposed to be!
That's why we came.
Nobody believed it, but that's why we came.
[Adam] I moved everything out of the way,
but I can't get that deep.
There's something bigger down there
that I can't get to
because I can't dive down deep enough.
[Taylor] Why not the ROV?
Can we use that?
Because at least it can get right there.
-It's got a claw on it, right? -Yeah.
See where the crack in the rock is right there?
Yeah.
Should be some colour in there maybe.
[Narrator] An ROV,
a remote-operated vehicle equipped with a camera and claw,
can reach depths of up to 200 feet.
See right there?
Yeah, yeah. I see it. Gonna go down.
I'll go straight down into it.
When the clouds clear--
[Narrator] Adam gets ahold of a promising rock.
Through the water, it looked very much like gold.
Just like Stu Brown described.
[Taylor] Oh, that's shiny, all right.
You're my hero, man, and I mean that.
There you go.
-Got it. -You got it?
We got it.
Mixed mineralization like crazy.
[Narrator] Everything points to gold--
except one thing....
If it was gold,
it would have weight,
and it's got no frigging weight whatsoever, man.
Yep, this is pyrite.
[Narrator] Pyrite, also known as "Fool's Gold".
What if Stuart Brown--
Thought this was his sinkholes of gold, right?
--and they were pyrite nuggets this size everywhere,
and he thought that's what it was.
Because it is deceiving in the water.
It looks like gold.
Correct, and if there was lots of it--
He would have been like, "Whoa!"
-Holy crap, right? -A sinkhole of gold.
Maybe if it was too deep like this--
[Taylor] Yeah, then he probably didn't even go in.
[Adam] I mean, that would look like gold under the water.
[Daryl] It would.
He was fooled.
Stu Brown wasn't lying.
He was just mistaken.
At the end of the day, Daryl wasn't wrong either.
It was Stu Brown that said the gold was there
and Daryl was following up on that lead.
To be honest,
I didn't think there was going to be anything down there.
I mean, there is something,
but that's no lost gold mine.
No, that's nugget pyrite.
This is not the Lost Creek.
I'm happy...
and sad at the same time.
Happy because I got to close the chapter on Stuart Brown,
but I'm still sad that my dad can't be here,
and I can't go home,
and I can't share this...
I can't share experience with him.
I just have to--
yeah.
[Adam] If anything,
I'm just glad you finally got here.
That's the real gold is coming here with you.
[Taylor] Absolutely.
You know what, Daryl's...
Daryl's definitely a friend.
-It's a special place. -Yeah.
For sure.
[Adam] The legend pushes you.
This actually adds fuel to the fire.
If that's not Slumach's gold,
that means it's somewhere still out there.
[Narrator] Next time on Deadman's Curse...
Brace yourself.
[Adam] There's a guy up there.
His name is Jack Mould.
[woman] There is a lot of stories
of why he went missing.
Some of our people have run into him.
He was always pulling a gun on them.
I honestly think he was murdered.
[Adam] This place is a crime scene.
[Taylor] So who wants to go in first?
[Kru] Freaking creepy.
It's not where the stories tell you to go look.
My name is David Muise
and I found Slumach's lost gold mine.
