I saw you in a fearful dream.

Do you not feel very alone?

Master...

that road, cold, dark and desolate...

.. did it truly lead you
to the next world?

To us...
who follow the path of Tea...

it's also our path in this world...
the one we must follow.

Isn't this true?

On that day, I heard that
in Kennin Temple in Kyoto...

the new tearoom for Urakusai-sama's
hermitage, had just been finished.

At the time I was invited there, the
rich merchant, Daitoku, was also there.

He was know to sell high quality
utensils for the Tea ceremony.

It was my first encounter
with Lord Uraku.

I've only seen him from a distance,
a couple of times.

He left me with the impression of a man,
wise but rather severe.

Wise, indeed.

It was 27 years ago.
I suspect he may have mellowed...

Not... still severe.

After all, he is the younger brother
of Oda Nobunaga...

and thus a senior member
of Taiko's family.

I am Honkakubo.

Welcome.

I believe you served Tea Master Rikyu,
for a long time.

Yes, I did.

This must be your favourite bowl...
the highly praised "Ido" bowl?

This tea spoon was made by
Furuta Oribe.

Really strong like he was.

So much so...
he sliced open his stomach in protest.

Sen no Rikyu did the same...

Yamanoue Soji, also.

All three committed "seppuku".

They were all
Grand Masters of the Tea Ceremony.

Is "seppuku" the only way
to be a Master?

Well, the evening is getting cold.

Let's go back
and drink some Dutch liquor.

How long has it been
since Rikyu was sentenced to die?

About 27 years.

So many years!

And I go on living...
quite shamelessly.

Rikyu was ordered to kill himself.

What was the real reason, in fact?

Well...

There are many rumours,
mostly slanderous.

Some say he was selling Tea Ceremony
ustensils at exhorbitant prices.

But the price reflects the true value of
such objects as part of the Tea ceremony.

Outside people could never
appreciate that value.

Isn't this how you made
your fortune?

It has been said.

Everything Rikyu chose
was perfectly attuned...

to the most beautiful Tea Rooms.

It's only normal that such objects
were very expensive.

There was certainly no fraud intended.

Some say he was the victim
of foul tongues.

There were many one might suspect.

Lord Ishida was surely one of them.

But what did he allege?
- That he was a Christian.

Or perhaps that he was opposed
to the plan to invade Korea.

What do you think, Honkakubo?

As the path of Tea teaches
mutual respect and kindness...

it was only natural to approve of Christian
ideas. Naturally he deplored invasion by war.

And the Daitoku incident...

Ah, you mean Daitokuji temple...

about the statue of Rikyo above the entrance
looking down on all who entered...

Do you say, as some people implied,
that he did so to boast of his power!

Rikyu'd have never done such a thing!
- I didn't say that!

Enough...

Lately, I'm losing my temper
too easily.

What's so funny?

It's just your way of speaking...
Abbot Toyobo used to say that.

Wait! Abbot Toyobo of Shinnyo Temple...
he passed away in KEICHO 3.

That would be... almost twenty years ago.

To see beauty of one or two flowers
is know as 'wabi suki'.

As show for a party, Hideyoshi ostentatiously
planted thousands of cherry trees ...

Deeply offended Toyobo-sama told Taiko.
Then giving up everything he took his life.

About Abbot Toyobo...
please tell me more.

At the time, I went to Shinnyodo temple
to see the red maple leaves.

As I walked through the gate...

Honkakubo, is that you?

Hankakubo, isn't it?

Toyobu-sama!

Why become a hermit while so young?

I know you mourn the loss
of your Master...

all the more reason you must go
more deeply into the path of Tea.

Yes.

Now you have chosen this path, you must
strive to become a Master. You know this, no?

When Rikyu came here for the last time,
you were with him, weren't you?

Yes, I was, sir.

That day he gave me a treasure.
A tea bowl made by Chojiro.

A delicate black bowl flared at the bottom.
Come, let me offer you tea in it.

Thank you, sir.

I was six years after Rikyu's death,

that the abbot of Daitokuji Temple,
Kokei, passed away.

It was the end of an era.

He and Rikyu were the two pillars
of that era.

For warriors the Tea Ceremony
had great meaning.

But that era has gone for ever.

The path of Tea in the era
of warring states (Sengoku)...

Drinking Tea before waging war...

plunging headlong into battle...

ready to die.

Now I have drunk Rikyu's tea...
nothing remains for me to do.

I am glad to hear it.

Tea prepared by Rikyu
had a real power.

Unlike that of some other Masters.

He was a man of high caliber,
an true master.

He had devoted his entire life to it.

Tea made him strong and straight.

Thus Hideyoshi felt challenged by him.

Though Taiko-sama ordered him to die...

I feel it was Rikyu himself
who beckoned death.

Rikyu allowed no weapons in his Tea room...
though his Tea was a battle.

Taiko-sama put his sword away
when facing Rikyu in the Tea room.

In those circumstances...
against Master...

he had no chance.

Who knows how many times
Taiko had entered Rikyu's Tea Room...

Dozens of times...
perhaps even hundreds.

And every time he had to taste
the bitter flavour of defeat.

I see you like it.

Poor Taiko, deprived of his sword...
obliged to drink Rikyu's Tea,

to see the exquisite tea bowl...
like so many small cuts.

Defeat was death.

Taiko realized it.

He must have wanted revenge...
on the one who had continually bested him.

In the end he banished Rikyu from Kyoto,
sending him to Sakai.

What happened after that?

Honkakubo, have you no idea at all?

It seems... we will never know.

It's late.

Stay here.

Thank you very much.

But the moonlight is beautiful.
I'd like to walk back, enjoying it.

As you wish.

This river always reminds me of
the day when master was banished.

His boat went down river
to the ferry at Yodogawa.

He stayed two weeks in Sakai,
and then his death was ordered.

I know that
my Lords Sansai and Oribe...

came down to the river
to see him off.

I suspect they thought
that Hideyoshi...

would change his mind
while Rikyu was in Sakai...

and that he would soon
call him back.

Otherwise, they'd have never dared...

to publicly bid farewell to a man
know to have earned Taiko's wrath.

But...

Master must have been hearing
the footsteps of death...

getting ever closer.

I can imagine how fierce
he must have looked just then,

even if I didn't see it myself.

As I remember how terrible
he looked once before.

It was the morning
of September 4th, Tensho 16...

while Rikyu was living
at Hideyoshi's Jurakudai residence.

Today we receive three important guests
from the Daitokuji Temple.

Abbot Shunnoko is the most important.

Abbot Kokei and Gyokuho
are the other two.

As their host, I will serve Tea.
- Yes.

Everything must be perfect...
please pay special attention.

Yes, sir

But... why special?

Abbot Kokei...

has been banished to Kyushu.
It's his farewell ceremony.

What caused his banishment?
- I don't know what or why.

I also don't know when,
or even if, he'll be pardoned.

What scroll shall I hang
for the ceremony?

It should be... Kido's.

Uh...The one Taiko entrusted to you?

Without his authorization...
don't you risk his wrath.

That is why we shall use it.

Very well!

The poem...

was perfect for the situation.
It read:

"Brilliant leaves falling.
The autumn air, cold, bracing."

"His meditations successful,
the wiseman prepares to leave."

"Pray he returns soon
to tell us what he has seen.''

The poem expressed the thoughts of those
about to see Abbot Kokei off to exile.

This was its true relevance.

All the same...

.. hosting a farewell ceremony for one
who has defied Taiko sama,

and even more, in his own residence!

The host must be mad!
- As also the guests!

I'm the worst, accepting
such hospitality... what arrogance!

But hanging Taiko-sama's
precious Kido scroll...

without authorization, sitting calmly...
is without doubt...

the ultimate arrogance!

I needed to put back
the Kido scroll as soon as possible...

But, when I got back...

They have departed.

Let's leave it for a while.

Yes.

Honkakubo?

Yes.

I thought you might need a lamp?

Oh... Is it that late?

He sat like that without moving
for half a day.

How else could it be seen...
but as a challenge to Hideyoshi's power.

So was his attitude in the boat.

Thus he defied Hideyoshi's vengeance,
unperturbed, his head held high.

Master.

Lord Urakusai
wants to know the truth.

As do I.

This sadness...
so strong this evening.

an uneasiness...
Please free me from this uncertainty.

Exactly... what did happen?

Feel free to think what you wish.
It matters little.

All the same...
please tell me.

Am I to tell you of the agony
in which I ended my life?

Are you really that cold hearted?

Forgive me!
Not a word more will I say!

Forgive me!
I beg of you... Forgive me!

You're very diligent.

Lord Uraku!

Please, please...

You've come a long way?
What brings you here?

I've come to see you.

Really?

You think I'd come this far
for a joke?

This place refreshes my spirit.

Master Rikyu here... even after his death.

The tea room of frugal man.
- Simple and clean. I like it.

Tell me what Yamanoue Soji
has written.

In a few words...

Well, to be brief...

it reveals the sacred significance of the
utensils of the Tea ceremony... his teaching.

- Only...?

It's also written...

"After I go to Kyoto
and have passed away..."

"give this book to my disciples.
Let it be my bequest to them."

"After I go to Kyoto
and have passed away?"

Yes, My Lord.

"He knew he was going to die."

It's incredible!

A strange and unforgettable scene
remains etched in my mind.

Does it have to do with Soji?

It happened in the
Yamasaki Tea room in Myokian.

I had only been serving Master Rikyu
for two or three years.

I didn't know the guests nor had I learned
all the inticacies of a formal Tea Ceremony.

The Tea ceremony had been
prolonged late into the evening.

And was still going on.

A scroll with the character for
'Nothingness' takes nothing from us.

Light!

Coming.

Hang a scroll inscribed 'Nothingness',
and nothing vanishes.

But everything vanishes...

if it's inscribed 'Death'.

Terrible like the Lord of Tabi was he?
- Exactly so.

Then without doubt
it was Yamanoue Soji.

Even without flickering candlelight,
Soji's face could be frightening.

Was the scroll they hung
inscribed with the character for 'Death'.

But... nobody would've written that.
- Soji would have.

Whatever the case,
he said it very succinctly.

'Nothingness', nothing vanishes.
'Death', everything vanishes.

While at Osaka castle, Higeyoshi made
Yamanoue Soji his Tea Master.

But having arroused Hideyoshi's
displeasure, he was banished.

Then, when Taiko attacked
Odawara castle, Soji could have escaped.

But then he appeared to purposely
allow himself to be caught.

Taiko Hideyoshi then ordered him...

to perform the Tea Ceremony.

Wait.

You are renowned as being
Rikyu's best disciple.

What are you doing?

Stop!

You shouldn't make tea that way.
Are you trying to humiliate me?

As you say...

this is not the formal way
usually used.

I told you to make it
the proper way.

In my opinion this way
of making wabi tea is superior.

Silence!

Remember, you serve the Serene Kampaku.
- 'Serene Kampaku', Hideyoshi Toyotomi.

So long as you remain pompous
and proud of your great power...

it will be impossible to understand
the true essence of the path of Tea.

Shut up!

This free style form is meant
for a true man of Tea.

Clearly it is not for you.

Cut off his nose...
and his ears!

That's far enough.

I saw Lord Urakusai off to Kyoto.

They bothered me in life...
so even now in death.

Forgive me.

You must be lonely, Master.
- I am not lonely.

Tired and cold...

from the long, dark road to death...
in no way lonely.

In my dream you told me to go back.
And I obeyed.

That's good.

You must devote all of your life
to the way of Tea.

It's served well
since the time of Jo.

Now Soji and I are the last
of that era.

Did Soji really commit seppuku,
as it's being said?

Does it matter?

The way he lived and died
is only Soji's concern.

Even if they had cut off
his ears and nose...

his death could only be that
of a true Master.

That strange night,
in your Tea Room in Myokian...

the one next to you
was Yamanoue Soji.

Yes...

Who was the other?

Well... who indeed?

I remember... someone was there.

I think... the seat was empty.
- But someone...

Forget it.
It matters little who it was.

Those who could suit that seat...
are very few.

Perhaps you could choose someone.

On February 28th,
the anniversary of Rikyu's death...

I was on my way to visit
his grave at Daitokuji Temple.

It was there,
that I met Urakusai sama again.

I recently finished Yamanoue Soji's secret
manuscript that I borrowed from you.

I was thinking to return it...
when the incident at Odawara came to mind.

Inside the castle,
Soji was making Tea for the warriors

while, on the outside, Rikyu was making
Tea the for Hideyoshi's army.

Both sides drank Tea
before dying...

Friend and foe alike.

Rikyu saw lots of men
rush to their deaths.

Who knows how many?

They drank Rikyu's Tea,
dying to a life of desires.

Most then died again in battle.

How could he have wanted
a natural death for himself?

He helped them die, wasn't it so?

His Tea Room
wasn't for Zen meditation...

but for accepting one's death.

Furuta Oribe also...

Its name?

"Life"

I would have liked to assist
at such a serious Tea ceremony.

I'm afraid it's rather unlikely
in our times.

Times have changed.

Tea must change also...
warriors as well as Tea masters.

At the time of Rikyu's death,
Furuta Oribe came to power.

Is there anything
you can tell me of the man?

After Master Rikyu's death,
I retired to a quiet life in Rakuboku.

The only person I saw much of
was the reverend Abbot Toyobo.

Then, the decisive battle at Sekigahara
and a new ruler...

everything changed.

In year 15 of KEICHO (1611)...

I heard that Furuta Oribe
was serving Shogun Ieyasu in Nijojo...

as his Grand Master of Tea.

Considering his new position,
I decided to visit him...

so I travelled to
his residence in Hushimi.

Welcome...

You look well.
- Thank you, my Lord.

I am pleased to see
you are also well.

What is it?
- Nothing.

It's just that the way you make tea
is exactly... as Master did.

It pleases me to hear it.

And that?

It's been a long time since
I sat in front of it with Master.

When I'm alone and empty...
I sit in front of it.

"Harmony, Equality, Reverence, Simplicity"

Rikyu's whole philosophy
captured so beautifully.

"Keep the essence of the path of Tea
in your heart at every moment of your life."

"Never take making Tea lightly."

One needs a constant discipline
to sustain such a practise.

Rikyu always lived by these,
his own words.

They must have been in his heart,
even in his last moments.

Why would he want to get rich
selling Tea ustensils?

Or display his statue to boast?
It makes no sense to me.

Master Rikyu must be happy...

that someone like you
understands him so well.

There's one thing I'd like to know.
How he felt towards death.

During those last two weeks
in Sakai, his home town...

what were his thoughts?

What were his feelings?

You served him for a long time.

What do you think?
- Well...

I don't know...

He could have saved his life,
had he apologized to Taiko sama.

Surely he could have pacified Hideyoshi,
no matter how angry he was.

And still, he didn't apologize.

He didn't ask anyone to intercede.

There's something else
I want to share with you.

I don't think you've seen this before.

Master Rikyu...
made this Tea spoon for me.

It was Master's parting gift...
Surely it embodies his last feelings.

It's called "Tears".

The case was designed
to be like a mortuary tablet.

After all, I wasn't the only one
praying for Master Rikyu on a daily basis.

"Tears"

Now I think I know...
what Oribe was thinking.

How was that, my Lord?
Please tell me.

Oribe wanted to follow Rikyu
even to death.

Follow him even to death?
- That was his desire.

He had devoted himself to Rikyu.

With the fall of Osaka castle,
the new ruler was eliminating the losers.

Oribe was arrested for having served
Hideyoshi as Tea Master.

Had he asked me,
I could have helped him.

He didn't.

As Rikyu hadn't apologized
before he died,

neither would Oribe.

I'm sure, the third person at that strange
Tea ceremony at Myokian in Yamasaki...

was non other than Oribe.

A scroll inscribed with the character for
'Nothingness' takes nothing from us.

Candle!
- Yes.

One inscribed with the character for
'Death' leaves us with nothing.

'Nothingness' takes nothing.
'Death' takes all.

The three men sitting there
in complete silence...

must have beem making a solemn
committment to follow the path to the end.

An unspoken vow even unto death.

You said...

that Oribe followed Rikyu's path
in going to his death...

could it be that he
was holding true to that vow?

To that vow?

It could be.

Soji commited hara-kiri,
as did Rikyu commit hara-kiri...

and Oribe did as well.

It's unlikely...

that any Tea Master today
would go so far.

I haven't killed myself.

Yet I am a Tea Master.

It was in the month of
December in the following year.

I was returning from mendicancy...

and was thinking the garden
needed sweeping.

His hermitage is down there.
- Thank you.

Excuse me.
Aren't you Master Sotan?

Honkakubo!

Is it possible
you still remember me!

Of course.
I've come to see you.

I've been looking for you.
- You have?

Since grandfather Rikyu died,
you've remained a hermit.

Some people said they saw you
in Ohara village, others on Mount Hiei.

Only recently I heard
that you were living here.

You were only 14 years old
when Master Rikyu died.

You're fully grown now.

Tell me Honkakubo...

In the end...
why did Grandfather have to die?

In actual fact...
what really happened?

In the last six months before his death,
morning, afternoon and evening...

he would perform at least
three Tea ceremonies a day,

almost one hundred ceremonies
in that period alone.

That's right...

I had never seen him so absorbed,
completely devoted to the way of Tea.

As if he were saying,
"A Tea Master should only make Tea."

I think he was trying
to pass on his beliefs...

through his example.

Of all those ceremonies,
Taiko-sama attended five.

One day... sometime just after the new year,
about the time Rikyu received Lord Ieyasu,

we heard that Taiko sama had become
displeased with us.

After that...
everything seemed to change.

Why was that?

There could only be one reason in those
days for such an unexpected change...

for Taiko sama to become
suddenly so angry with Master...

who for many years had remained in
Taiko sama's favour, no matter what he did.

Only one reason?

Yes.

I think that...
Hideyoshi still had one great ambition...

It had long been his dream to invade Korea.
He had prepared at great cost and was ready.

But Master...
was against such aggresion and said so.

Eventually...

he must have come to know
what Master was saying.

So that's why...

Honkakubo-sama!
Are you in there?

Hello... Hello?

Yes... come in.

I've been sent by Daitokuya...

Lord Urakusai Oda has collapsed...

He's near death.

I've a horse for you outside...
come... right away...

Is that the sound of hail?

Yes.

It really was hail.

The moss is completely covered.

Honkakubo...
- Yes.

I wonder if I'll be able
to follow that road...

the one you dreamed about?

probably not...

I haven't committed seppuku...

My death won't be marked
by that pain and courage.

If only...

I knew how Rikyu felt
in his last moments before death...

I can tell you!

Please allow me.

It'd make me so happy... please do.

Every night, I speak to my Master.

I see him in my dreams.

The other night he told me,

what he had felt when death
was closing in on him.

In a dream he told you?
- Yes.

In TENSHO 19, on February 26th, Master
was suddenly called back from Sakai.

The morning of the 28th...

At that moment, Master...

was celebrating his last Tea ceremony.

My Lord.

Thank you for visiting my Tea Room.

We met for the first time in the spring
of Tensho 4 (1577)...

in the Tea House
in your castle in Azuchi.

Since then, for almost fifteen years,
I've been in your service...

now it's time to say good-bye.

Well...
no need to say good-bye.

That's not so, My Lord.
I am to die.

Right... don't be stubborn.

I'm obliged to you for many things...

the high station of Tea Master...

your support to develop
the path of Tea...

and now finally... death.

It is the greatest of your gifts.

Your sentence of death has given me a new
understanding of the path of the Tea.

I thank you for that.

Your sentence has
set my spirit and body free.

I used to talk of beauty and simplicity
in the path of Tea,

but without truly understanding it.

Now that death is
unexpectedly at my side,

and I have to look
straight into her eyes,

no confusion is possibly anymore.

"Simplicity" is stripped bare,
what is called...

a 'bone of death'.

That may be,
but let's put it behind us.

Don't be obstinate, I say.

During the years of our association,

all my abilities have been
available to you as Tea Master.

Always you've used
only what was of service to you.

Now for the first time,
you have rejected me completely,

both my merits and my shortcomings.

If that is the case,
haven't you done the same to me.

You have used your association with me...
to advance your own ends.

That's true.

That was how it was supposed to be.

Still, you have drawn your sword.

This leaves me no choice...

but to draw mine against you.

Just as you, as the highest in the land,
have rules that you must follow,

so I, as a man of Tea,
am bound by mine.

Instead of merely unsheathing and
flashing your sword, you should have...

killed me with a single stroke!

I could hear your voice
when you gave the order...

sending me into exile.

"What is the Tea?"
"What is simplicity?"

"From the very beginning
they have meant nothing to me."

"It is but a game."

Rikyu!

At last you have acted
as a true general.

Now too, I must act
as a true man of Tea.

Thanks to you, I am at last
awaking from a long nightmare.

Rikyu had tried with Taiko sama's help
to establish in this world...

a small space free of ideas
such as wealth and power,

free from all the complications
and contingencies of ordinary life.

Of course, as it turned out,
it was not to be.

All he had to do
was sit there alone by himself.

Yes... exactly as you say.

Still, in good faith,
he tried to share it...

with Taiko-sama and his generals.

What a terrible error.
- Reverend Master only realized it...

at the very end,
when he received the order to die.

Rather, he suddenly remembered
what he had known when he first started.

Meaning... what?

When he recalled the revelation
he experienced...

when he built his
first little Tea Room in Myokian.

This Tea Room was buit
by my order.

That gives Taiko the right to be here.
- My Lord, it is not destined for you...

but for Soeki and other men of Tea.

It is a fortress for Rikyu,
the Tea Master.

A fortress where I fought this earthly
world alone without any soldiers.

Poetry master Jo used to say:

"The purest poetry
reduces all to a pithy essence."

"He said too, the path of Tea must also
be purified to an austere essence."

In the time I've been
in exile in Sakai...

I have seen death.

Sometimes as my guest,
and sometimes as my host.

I think this could be...

the end of my path of Tea.
- Enough, enough.

You don't need to commit seppuku.

Let's change the subject.
Make me another bowl of tea.

That I can not do!

Many are waiting for me...

to make a final tea
in the larger shoin room.

What?

I know that many
waiting in that room...

died fighting against you.

You should take care.

It is not for you.

- It is the road of Rikyu.

Each man of Tea has his own path.

For good or for bad...

Rikyu chose this dark and cold road,

much like the path of Tea
in these obscurantist days.

Where does this road lead,
Master?

This path goes on forever.

But, when the time comes
that war is no more...

it will be forgotten.

This is Rikyu's path.

I believe Rikyu will disappear
when it does.

So...
your own path.

I understand.

Now I have no regrets.

I am strengthened.

The guests are walking
toward the Tea Room.

I have to go too!
