God's Messenger asked me about you, and said: "Where is Khalid?"

I said to him: "God will bring him to us."

He said: "A man of his calibre cannot remain ignorant of Islam."

"If he would use his intelligence and his experience"

"for the Muslims against the idolaters,"

"he would benefit from it a great deal."

"We would certainly give him precedence over others."

It is high time, brother, for you to make amends

for the great benefits you have missed.

By God, it is all very clear.

What has brought you from Abyssinia, and set you on this route?

Hasn't the Prophet been quoted as saying

that Islam erases everything that preceded it?

How about Safwan and Ikrimah?

They cannot forget their fathers and still want to take revenge.

No one is happier to meet you today than me,

except God's Messenger (peace be upon him).

We received the news of your arrival.

All praise be to God for guiding you to the truth.

Khalid is not one whose intelligence would lead him anywhere other than to Islam.

Welcome to you, Abu Sulaiman.

Messenger of God, I bear witness that there is no deity other than God,

and that you are God's Messenger.

You have seen how I fought in those battles stubbornly turning away from the truth.

Pray to God to forgive me.

Ever since Muhammad's immigration,

we suffered no greater loss than losing Khalid and Amr,

Quraysh's military commander and its greatest mind.

We have become fewer in number.

The meat of one camel will feed us all.

Or we are like a fox in his hole:

pour a bucket of water in it and he will come out.

I fear that before a year is out,

all the people of Makkah will have followed Muhammad.

If this is how you assess the situation, what keeps you here?

Are you waiting until he comes in and we cannot resist him?

Revenge for my father, and a hatred that I cannot suppress.

How will I feel if I am walking among Muslims and they say:

here is Ikrimah Ibn Abu Jahl?

If we were to embrace Muhammad's faith, it will be like we kill our fathers anew.

We will disown them, their practices and religion.

We will then worship, reading a Qur'an which denounces them.

Alas for Khalid!

What will he do when he reads that Qur'an which denounces his father?

Or would he leave out some of it?

Is there is anything of the Qur'an that may be left out?

I have something in mind which I need to achieve.

I do not think my heart will be purged of the traces of ignorance unless I do that.

Al-Wateer, near Makkah

Escape! Here is Bakr on the attack.

Who did supply Bakr with arms and men,

helping them to kill the Khuza'ah men at Al-Wateer?

- Was it you, Safwan? - No, it wasn't.

- Did you, Ikrimah? - I wouldn't do that.

People have come to know that Quraysh have supported them in this disgraceful act.

You know that Bakr became our allies in the Al-Hudaibiyah peace treaty,

while Khuza'ah became Muhammad's allies.

Now you have violated the treaty.

If Khuza'ah seek Muhammad's support, he will certainly support them.

What are you going to do?

My Lord, I am seeking Muhammad's help;

appealing to him by our long standing alliance.

Of old, you were young and we were your parents.

Then we embraced Islam and stuck by you.

Grant us strong support, may God guide you.

And call on God's servants to flock in support.

Let God's Messenger be among them in full clarity;

When facing aggression, he shows his anger.

Heading a host like the sea with high waves.

The Quraysh have broken their deal with you,

and violated your solemn treaty.

They appointed men to watch us at Kida'.

They treacherously attacked us at Al-Wateer,

and they killed us when we were engaged in prayer.

Your appeal has been well received. So be content.

The Prophet has said to you:

You shall have support, Amr Ibn Salim.

Abu Bakr, we all know your high standing with Muhammad.

Will you appeal to him, by the kinship between us,

to overlook this error,

confirm the peace treaty and extend its term?

I will not do that.

You, enemy of God, want me to intercede for you with God's Messenger?

By God, I will kill you this moment if he orders me to do that.

If I could find nothing to fight you with other than dust, I would still fight you.

Go away from me. God will settle matters between us.

Ali, you are my closest relative here.

I have come for a definite objective.

I do not want to return empty handed.

Will you take my case to Muhammad.

Well, Abu Sufyan! God's Messenger has made a decision

and none of us can speak to him about it.

Well, will you tell this son of yours to declare peace between our peoples,

and he will be the greatest Arab master for the rest of time?

My child is too young to declare peace between people.

Besides, no one can extend protection to anybody against God's Messenger.

Abu Al-Hasan, matters have become too hard for me.

I seek your advice.

By God, I do not know of anything which would be of any use to you.

You are, however, the chief of your people.

Go and declare peace between people; then go home.

Will such a step be of much use?

I really do not think so,

but I can see no other way for you.

O' you people,

Did Muhammad approve what you said when you declared peace?

You achieved nothing.

I never heard of anything like this.

How can you declare peace between people

when you are one of the two parties in conflict?

He is indeed the guilty party.

By God, Ali has played games with you, and you achieved nothing.

If any of you thinks that he can do better, then come forward.

It is too late.

I think Muhammad will soon surprise you with a huge army that fills the valley,

and with other Arab tribes joining him.

If you like, raise your arms

and send your scouts to watch what is happening.

You said it, Abu Yazeed. He will have a huge army, filling the valley,

with Arab tribes are now supporting him.

Can we fight them all?

You have become old, Abu Sufyan; your strength has sapped.

Leave me to my worry, Hind.

Today is unlike the days that have gone by.

Muhammad is now the head of a great kingdom.

And will you agree to be under him, if he lets you live?

He will rule in your case as he pleases:

he orders and you obey.

And perhaps he will give you up to someone

who used to be our slave to order you around.

He respects people's status.

Do you think that if you accept his authority

he will place you ahead of Ibn Abi Quhafah,

or Ibn Hantamah or Umar Ibn Al-Khattab,

or even ahead of Bilal Ibn Rabah, the slave of Umayyah Ibn Khalaf?

If he places you at their level, it is a great disgrace.

Will Abu Sufyan, the master of Quraysh and Kinanah,

be one of the ordinary people?

I praise the gods that my father is not alive to witness such disgrace.

Had the people taken your father's advice at the time,

we would not have reached this state.

He told them to let him address his message to the Arabs.

"If they kill him, they would have spared you the trouble."

"If he wins, his glory and honour will be yours to share."

"Say to people that I, Utbah, have said so and was a coward"

But when facing the real test, he preferred to die honourably without giving in.

How does Abu Sufyan compare with him today?

By God, if you back down and stop fighting Muhammad,

you are the worst husband.

All praise be to God who has brought him in defeat and humiliation.

Had he belonged to your Adiy clan, you would not have said this,

but you know that he belongs to Abd Manaf.

Hold it, Abbas. By God, when you accepted Islam,

I was happier with your conversion than I would have been had Al-Kattab, my father,

been the one to become a Muslim.

No motive do I have other than that I know how dearly the Prophet loves you

and is keen that you be a Muslim, since you are his uncle.

How forbearing, generous and kind you are!

Yes, I know there is no deity except for God.

By God, had there been any deity alongside God,

he would have been of some use to me by now.

And you bear witness that he is God's Messenger.

On this point, I still have some doubts.

Well, man!

Submit to God and declare that there is no deity other than God

and that Muhammad is God's Messenger.

It is all clear and settled.

O' people!

Abu Sufyan has accepted Islam and made the declaration.

By God, he has said it only out of fear.

We cannot look into his heart to know whether he is a true believer.

We take what he says at face value.

Besides, we want to go into Makkah peacefully.

We leave his heart to God.

I can almost smell Makkah.

Patience, brother.

It won't be long before you are back in your own home,

- God willing. - God willing.

I wonder what has Suhail Ibn Amr done.

And what has Safwan and my cousin Ikrimah done?

What can they do now that Abu Sufyan has accepted Islam?

The worst that I fear for them is being headstrong.

They will only give in when they are sincere.

If they continue to have doubts about Islam,

they will not act out of fear, or hypocritically.

O' people!

O' people! Everyone get ready.

Take your positions in the order given us by God's Messenger.

Quick.

People of Quraysh, people of Quraysh.

Muhammad is approaching at the head of an army for which you are no match.

He who enters Abu Sufyan's house is safe

What an evil chief you are!

What an evil chief he is!

Who will take revenge for Quraysh?

Kill this fat man who has acted cowardly,

betrayed you and handed you over to your enemy.

Let not this woman delude you.

He is coming and you are no match for his army.

He who enters Abu Sufyan's home is safe

May God kill you. How will your home take us all?

And whoever remains in his home, with his door shut, is safe.

Why will people need your home if they are safe in their own homes?

For pride.

He only took this from Muhammad to hide his shame and cowardice

and to delude you that he continues to be a master

who has special privileges.

What a master!

And whoever goes into the Mosque is safe.

To your home, if you wish.

Yes, if I wish to be safe in Abu Sufyan's home.

Abu Sufyan!

He used to be the fiercest enemy of Muhammad.

Now, he is scared to death.

He hasn't changed.

He is a businessman, in war or in peace.

He always tries for maximum profit or minimum loss.

The likes of him live long,

while those like my father would never compromise

until they fall, retaining their strength.

- I don't compromise. - Neither do I.

We will fight then, even if only to retain our self respect.

I have men who share our view.

- I also have men. - And I too.

Will you, Abu Wahb, help us with what you have of armament?

I have kept them for such a need.

come out and meet God's Messenger in the Mosque. You are safe.

People of Makkah,

People of Makkah, come quickly to meet God's messenger.

It is all over, Abu Sufyan.

Yes, it is all over, Hind.

By God, he is the kindest and most compassionate of people.

He only spoke to people briefly, and said to us:

"People of Quraysh,"

"God has taken away from you the passionate pride of ignorance"

"that attached great honour and pride to your ancestors."

"All people are the descendents of Adam, and Adam was created from clay."

"People of Quraysh,"

"what judgement do you think I am going to pass against you?"

We said:

You are an honourable brother and the son of an honourable brother.

You are an honourable brother and the son of an honourable brother.

He said: "You may go free. You are all pardoned".

So, as from now we are Muhammad's freed people.

This is the result we brought ourselves.

People went ahead of us while we lagged behind.

He has been generous and forgiving,

and we bear the consequences of our actions.

Have the men pledged loyalty?

Tomorrow he will accept women's pledges.

After what I did to Hamzah, his uncle?

He does not refuse anyone who comes to him seeking safety and pledging loyalty.

He accepted my pledge, why wouldn't he accept yours?

Has your heart been purged of your ancestor's religion, Abu Sufyan?

Yes, indeed. Nothing of it remains.

Had it been true, it would have given me some benefit.

Yet the heart is not filled by the new in an hour or so.

Yes, I am now a Muslim,

but I continue to struggle against what I used to love over many, many years.

What has passed of my life is longer than what remains.

I look around me in Makkah

and I see shadows of the past days coming out at me from every corner.

I see life as it used to be,

and I see the people:

Utbah Ibn Rabeeah, Abu Al-Hakam, Al-Waleed Ibn Al-Mugheerah,

Umayyah Ibn Khalaf, Al-Aas Ibn Wail, Abu Talib.

I see Umar Ibn Al-Khattab, Quraysh's ambassador, champion and defender.

I see Bilal carrying buckets of water and lighting the fire for his master.

I see Khalid Ibn Al-Waleed, Quraysh's military commander,

and Amr Ibn Al-Aas, its mastermind.

I see myself, Abu Sufyan,

Sakr Ibn Harb Ibn Umayyah Ibn Abd Shams Ibn Abd Manaf,

assuming the overall leadership of Quraysh.
