O my Muslim brothers, give me refuge.

The agreement between us has been concluded before the arrival of this one.

O my Muslim brothers, am I to be returned to the idolaters and their persecution?

Abu Jandal,

God's messenger tells you that we have made a peace agreement with these people

and exchanged pledges with them. We do not violate our pledges.

He, however, gives you happy news, saying to you:

Persevere in this adversity, Abu Jandal, as something you offer to God.

God will facilitate a way out for you and those vulnerable people with you.

Such is my brother, Abu Jandal. He always comes when it is too late.

We shall not need it again.

If anyone from Quraysh joins Muhammad without permission from his guardian,

he shall be returned to Quraysh.

If anyone who is with Muhammad joins Quraysh,

they are not required to return him.

Do you really think that you have taken for Quraysh

more than you gave God's messenger?

Haven't you heard what I said?

Tell me how many Muslims have deserted their religion

and came back to you ever since God sent you His messenger?

And how many people from Quraysh accepted Islam since then?

You fear that people will desert you. Hence, you insisted on this condition.

God's messenger, on the other hand, does not have the same fear.

Hence, he accepted it.

By God, this condition represents an admission by you

of the hollowness of your falsehood.

It also shows God's messenger's confidence in the truth he preaches.

At least his companions will not increase with people from among us.

If people will not immigrate to join God's messenger as a result of this condition,

they will not stop accepting Islam.

Within a short time, they will outnumber you here in your city.

It will not be long before the Muslims are pushing you from inside and outside,

and you will feel that Makkah is too tight for you.

I will wait and you wait, Suhail Ibn Amr.

How come, men? Don't you see that we have unchained you?

Have you got used to being in chains?

Can we go out?

We haven't set you free to stop you going out.

Can we immigrate to join God's messenger?

If you want to take the trouble to go all the way to Yathrib

and come back to Makkah in clear disappointment and frustration.

Abu Baseer! Have you fled from Makkah?

Umar, take me to God's messenger. By God, I will never return to the idolaters

to let them try to force me to renounce my faith.

But you know that our treaty with them requires us to return to them anyone

who comes to us without his guardian's permission.

Take me to God's messenger.

These two men have come demanding your return, according to the treaty

between us and Quraysh.

This man has left without permission by his guardian.

The treaty must be honoured.

How am I to be returned to the idolaters who will try to force me to renounce my faith?

Abu Baseer, you have heard what God's messenger said to you.

We have concluded a treaty with these people.

In our faith, we cannot deliberately break a promise.

God will soon provide a way of release for you and other persecuted people.

Messenger of God, you have fulfilled your promise,

and God has honoured your pledges.

You have handed me over to those people, but I sought to protect myself

from persecution and to let no one try to turn me away from my faith.

You are not at war with Quraysh, but I and those like me

have no treaty or peace agreement with Quraysh.

I am going to the coast

where Quraysh will see of me what will bring them displeasure.

It is time that the weak should inherit the tyrants.

Let us go.

At last!

At long last!

Farewell, Makkah, until we see you again, praising God with His messenger.

- Peace be upon you. - Peace be upon you

- Some men are coming! - I wonder what they want.

- Peace be upon you - Peace be upon you

Don't be scared. We shall not harm you.

Our war is with Quraysh.

This caravan is mere war gain.

It is also compensation for our property and houses

which Quraysh had taken unfairly.

Here are camels to take you to Makkah.

Let us not see you again in a caravan of Quraysh.

Your son, Abu Yazeed. Your son as well?

Why do you single out my son? He is only one man.

Yes, but he is Suhail Ibn Amr's son.

And Al-Waleed Ibn Al-Waleed is Khalid's brother.

And Ayyash Ibn Abi Rabee'ah

and Salamah Ibn Hisham are Ikrimah's uncles.

- What bad uncles! - You shouldn't have set them free.

We thought that the condition we stipulated against Muhammad

will prevent them from leaving.

That condition!

We thought it was in our favour.

We said: Abu Yazeed has done us proud stipulating against Muhammad

what no one else could take from him.

Now that condition is working against us.

If the situation remains as it is now, our trade will be ruined.

And we have nothing against Muhammad.

He will say: I have honoured my promises, but these people are not under me.

Why are we blaming ourselves? Let us find a solution.

Let us send a force to subdue them.

Will you fight ghosts? Where will you find them?

They have become like our outcasts.

You cannot find them when you seek them,

but if you leave them alone they will appear at the time and place they choose.

Abu Yazeed, you put us in this position when you dictated this condition.

Extricate us from it now. Find a solution.

Do you really think that you have taken for Quraysh

more than you gave God's messenger?

I will wait and you wait, Suhail Ibn Amr.

At last my son, Abu Jandal, has shown us true determination,

proving that he is his father's son.

Are you laughing when the situation should have made you cry?

Al-Waleed! Al-Waleed, my brother!

I never thought that such determination was in him.

Yes, indeed. I denounce what he is doing, yet I am proud of him.

How can the two be combined?

Yes they do. They do.

Muhammad, Quraysh have sent us to speak to you about Abu Baseer and his band.

They have caused us much trouble and intercepted our caravans.

At Al-Hudaibiyah, Quraysh agreed with you

that you will return whoever comes to you without his guardian's permission.

Quraysh are now willing to remove this condition.

They appeal to you by the ties of kinship to take this band under your wing,

and to include them in your community. We do not need them.

- Peace be upon you. - Peace be upon you.

- Welcome. - Welcome.

God's messenger sends you his greetings and invites you to come to Madinah

where you will be with him.

Quraysh have relented on the condition they stipulated.

They appealed to him by God and the ties of kinship to take you all.

- God is supreme - God is supreme.

Where is Abu Baseer?

He has been like this for several days.

Wouldn't you join me on this camel?

I am all right, don't worry.

Haven't I told you to join me on my camel? You cannot walk any longer.

It is nothing other than a bleeding finger.

Whatever we may encounter is for God's sake.

Take my camel.

Catch up with me if you can.

At last Abu Jandal... my brother, Abu Jandal.

My brother who is always in the lead.

What do you say now, Umar?

I seek God's forgiveness. I seek God's forgiveness.

God and His messenger know better. God and His messenger know better.

You were certainly wiser than me when you told me

to stick to whatever God's messenger decides.

Aided with what God reveals to him, He sees what we cannot see.

Anger took the better of me when I objected to what God's messenger did.

Woe to Umar! How can he erase his sin?

Take it easy. You did not object to God's messenger's action.

Your anger was for the sake of God and His messenger,

even though you were mistaken.

God's messenger was not angry with you for expressing your view.

He knew what your feelings were.

After all, actions are judged against the intention behind them.

Our affairs are determined by consultation as God and His messenger have ordered.

When he decides something, we know that it is by God's order and we must obey him.

You did obey, Umar.

You are certainly 'Al-Siddique', the true believer.

You are 'Al-Farooq', the criterion of distinction.

I am giving orders for mounts and boats to be prepared for them,

together with all that they need to have on their way back.

We will be sorry, for their departure as they have been with us for some time.

May God reward you, Sire.

You have done all that the Prophet thought you would do.

I take my leave now.

Good morning, your majesty.

Sit down, Amr.

This man who has just left, your majesty.

What about him?

- He is one of Muhammad's companions. - Yes,

the Prophet has sent him concerning his companions who are still with us:

Jaafar and his friends.

Are they going back to him?

This man, Muhammad's envoy, Amr Ibn Umayyah Al-Damri.

This man has killed some of our best leaders and noblemen

in the battles that took place between us.

My people have blamed me for coming to you. If...

If you give him to me and I kill him in revenge of those he killed of our people,

this could be my apology to my people.

I beg your pardon, Sire.

By God, if I knew that this would upset you, I would not have said it.

You ask me to give you the envoy of a messenger

who receives the Archangel who used to come to Moses, so that you would kill him?

Have you lost your mind?

Is that so, your majesty?

Well, Amr. Take my advice and follow him. By God, he is a Prophet,

and he will overcome all who are opposed to him,

just like Moses overcame Pharaoh and his hosts.

Will you accept my pledge as a Muslim on his behalf?

In the name of God, the Lord of Grace, the Ever-Merciful.

From Muhammad, God's Messenger, to Khusrau, the leader of Persia.

Peace be to him who follows right guidance, believes in God and His Messenger,

and declares that there is no deity other than God,

and that I am His Messenger to all mankind...

I am sent with the task of warning all those who are alive.

I call on you to accept Islam.

If you refuse, you shall bear the responsibility for the Magians.

In the name of God, the Lord of Grace, the Ever-Merciful.

From Muhammad, God's messenger, to the Negus, the king of Abyssinia.

Peace be with you. I praise God, the only God,

the King, the Praised One, the Peace, the One who controls everything.

I bear witness that Jesus, son of Mary, was God's spirit and His word

given to Mary, the virgin, the chaste. She thus conceived Jesus,

whom God created of His own spirit, as He created Adam with His own hand.

I call on you to believe in God alone, and to associate no other deity with Him,

and to continue to obey Him, and to follow me

and to believe in what has been revealed to me.

I am God's Messenger

and I call on you and on your subjects and soldiers to believe in God, the Almighty,

I have thus conveyed my message and given good counsel.

It is better for you to accept my good counsel. Peace to all.

Who is your chief?

Come with me, together with some of your friends.

Where to? We have done nothing wrong.

Ask no questions, but do as I tell you.

- What about my goods here? - Leave them to be looked after

by those who remain of your friends until you come back. Come along now.

In the name of God, the Lord of Grace, the Ever-Merciful.

From Muhammad, the messenger of God to Al-Muqawqis, the leader of Egypt.

Peace be to you. I wish to convey to you the message of Islam.

This man among you who claims to be a prophet,

who of you is the closest relation to?

I am.

Come forward.

Let your friends stand behind you.

I am going to enquire about this man.

If your friend here tells me a lie, point out that he is lying.

What sort of lineage has he?

He is of distinguished lineage among us.

Has anyone of you ever made such a claim before?

No.

- Was any of his ancestors a king? - No.

Who follows him: your leaders or the weaker elements?

The majority are the weaker elements.

Are they increasing or decreasing?

They are on the increase.

Does any of them turn away from his faith after accepting it?

No.

Did you ever accuse him of lying before he made this claim?

- No. - Does he resort to treachery?

No. But we now have a truce with him and we do not know how he will honour it.

Did you fight him?

- Yes. - How did the fight between you go?

Our war with him is even. Sometimes he wins; sometimes we win.

What does he advocate?

He says:

worship God alone and associate no partners with him.

He tells us to abandon what our forefathers believed.

He commands us to pray, pay zakat...

You have mentioned that he is of distinguished ancestry,

and this is the case with all prophets.

Since you say that no one else has made similar claims,

it cannot be said that he is imitating anyone.

You also denied that any of his forefathers was a king.

This means that he is not a claimant of a kingdom.

You said that he was not known to tell a lie before he made his claim.

Well, I know that he would not start by lying to God.

The majority of his followers are the weaker elements.

This is the case with all God's messengers. His followers are on the increase.

Such is the case with true faith, until it is completed.

No one turns away from his religion after having embraced it.

This is a characteristic of faith when its light shines in people's hearts.

He is not treacherous; so are all God's messengers.

You also answered me that he calls on you to believe in God's oneness,

refrain from worshipping idols.

If what you have told me is true,

then he will have the supremacy right here where I stand.

Here is a letter from him. Read it aloud for these people.

In the name of God, the Lord of Grace, the Ever-Merciful.

From Muhammad, God's messenger to Heraclius, the Byzantine ruler.

Peace be to those who follow right guidance.

I call on you to believe in Islam.

Adopt Islam and you will be safe, and God will give you a double reward.

If you decline, you shall bear responsibility for the Arians.

He sends envoys to kings and rulers of the earth,

when we have not finished our business with him and he has not finished with us.

He deludes himself.

Why wonder? He used to tell his companions that they would be taking over

the kingdoms of Persia, Byzantium, Egypt and Yemen

when they were still a few men who were persecuted by our people.

Our fathers used to ridicule him and them.

And rightly so... and suppose all Arabs embrace his faith,

although I do not think they will do,

what are they compared to those kings and their lands and armies.

Are you belittling your people?

If the Arabs were to unite, they would become a nation like these.

We are better able to withstand hardship and the burden of war.

How can you compare our wars with those of the Persians and the Byzantines?

An Arab war is a raid, while these nations have great armies

that are well trained to fight their equals.

They have divisions, plans, systems, organization and equipment

the like of which is unavailable to us. We saw some of it in our travels to Syria.

If the man is a Prophet, then his fortunes will grow until his faith reaches those countries.

If he were a Prophet, it would have been enough for him to pray to his God

to destroy his enemies, sparing him what he had suffered from them so far.

If he were to say such a prayer and his God answered it,

this means that the Arabs would be destroyed without adopting Islam.

Would he then be able to say that his religion has triumphed

and people have accepted it?

Or would he be able to tell his companions that God will give them

the kingdoms of Persia, Byzantium, Egypt and the rest?

You sound as though you are defending him.

I am only looking at things in their proper perspective.

Suppose he resorted to prayer rather than adopt the necessary means,

what will his companions do after his death? Will they fight?

You say that war against the Persians and the Byzantines

is different from inter-Arab warfare. Ask me about war.

Look at what he has done since he settled in Yathrib.
