People of the Aws and the Khazraj!

By God, my nephew has been well protected by his people, the Hashimite clan,

but he is choosing you and willing to immigrate to you with his companions.

If you are sure that you will protect him as you protect yourselves

and your women and children,

then come forward and give your pledges

on the terms he specifies for himself and for his Lord.

Otherwise, we better continue as we are.

This immigration to Yathrib is unlike the earlier one to Abyssinia.

Muhammad's companions are immigrating to a great city

which is only a few days away from you.

They are joining a great Arab community

that has always coveted Quraysh's position next to the Haram.

They consider themselves your equals.

They, however, belong to Yemeni Arabs while you belong to Mudar.

So far, they have not presented us with any risk because of their internal conflicts

Now that they have believed in Muhammad, they are united.

By al-Lat, they are brave and good fighters.

We are now clear that Muhammad has ordered all his companions to immigrate,

unless physically prevented.

What will you do when they are all in Yathrib

and Muhammad joins them?

They will all be under his leadership and he will enjoy all authority.

What will happen if the Aws and the Khazraj march to fight you

alongside your own children?

If we appeal to the rest of Mudar for support,

they will tell us that our own people are with them,

united under the banner of Muhammad's faith.

Don't forget, people of Quraysh, that your trade caravans

which go to Syria pass close to Yathrib. They will not be safe.

Moreover, Makkah will be deserted by a section of its population

which represents a market loss. We also lose the custom of Yathrib.

You are well aware that the Yathrib people are farmers, not merchants.

They used to buy their goods from you.

Do you think that now that they are your opponents in religion

will come to you in the different seasons to buy from you?

Besides, those of us who went over to them are no farmers.

They will soon start in business on the same line as we do.

They will thus have no need for us, nor will the areas around them.

Why don't you ask yourselves what has driven them to this?

I gave you good counsel when I told you

to let Muhammad address his message to the rest of the Arabs.

If they kill him, you would have been spared his trouble,

and if he is victorious, you will revel in his glory.

You refused to take my advice.

Now your discussion does not seem to indicate the right alternative.

Yes, we do.

We shall not let Muhammad and his companions immigrate,

even if this time we have to resort to arms.

We must start with our own family members, stopping them from immigrating.

Anyone who has actually left

has given us free access to his home and belongings,

including any money, arms, land, cattle, etc.

What harm would that have done you?

you are welcome in our quarters. You will have a substantial, well-equipped following.

Haven't you heard what the Prophet said:

leave the she-camel alone; she has her orders.

With us, messenger of God, you'll have men in numbers, well equipped to defend you.

God's messenger has ordered that the she-camel will only stop

where God wants her to stop. Leave her alone.

Here is my house, messenger of God. Just next to where she has sat.

Congratulations, Abu Ayyub.

God has honoured you with being the Prophet's host.

All praise be to God.

Congratulations, Abu Hubab, on the arrival of your Prophet.

- He is your Prophet. - We have nothing to do with him.

He does not belong to us Jews.

You have been for a long while telling us that a Prophet will appear at this time

and that you will follow him and be victorious. Isn't it true? Here he is.

Yes, we did. But we expected a Prophet from among us.

By the Lord of Moses, if this man brings us every sign, we won't believe in him.

Nor will I.

Abu Hubab, while we do not share the same religion,

we share hatred of the religion preached by this man.

To us, your religion is better than his.

However, we will resort to appeasement and hide our intentions,

while we scheme in secret.

Now that God's messenger has made the Muhajireen and the Ansar brothers,

every one of you knows his brother whom the Prophet has given him.

Let you all be very close, never separated except by death.

Each one of you must desire for his brother what he desires for himself.

He should favour him with good counsel and financial assistance.

You then hope that in the life to come God'll group you together as brothers in heaven.

This is a document drawn by Muhammad, the Prophet

for the believers and the Muslims from the Quraysh and Yathrib,

and whoever joins them and takes part in their struggle...

They are all one nation, distinguished from all other people.

Pledges of protection given under an oath apply to all.

The least distinguished among the believers may offer a pledge

of protection which is binding on all of them.

Believers are one another's allies against all people.

Anyone from among the Jews who joins us shall have our support

and equal rights with us, suffering no oppression

and fearing no alliance against them...

The Jews shall bear their expenses

and the Muslims shall bear theirs.

They are required to render support against anyone,

who fights any party to this agreement.

How beautiful!

According to this new treaty, we are all now under his authority,

while we were the masters in our forts and districts.

By the Lord of Moses, things have been turned upside down.

We used to consider ourselves above those Arabs who worshipped idols.

We used to say: we have a book to read,

and prophets whose legacy we cherished.

Now they say to us that they have a book being revealed by God,

just like the Torah was revealed to Moses,

but this book is the final one that puts a seal to all divine messages.

It is for all mankind.

They also claim to have a prophet who is Moses' brother.

He receives the archangel who addressed Moses,

but he is the last in the line of prophethood.
