The emotions that it brings
when I look back,

[Dianne] I did think that
I was going to die.

But fear didn’t overtake me.

But I didn’t know
who he was at the time.

I didn’t even know
he was a serial killer.

I believe I survived because
God needed to use someone

to just bring justice
for their loved ones.

[intro music starts]

in a hollow ♪

while they pray for tomorrow ♪

Nobody sees ♪

♪ Search back the roads
and cold city streets ♪

♪ There’s evil in the dark ♪

♪ Blood on their hands
And the devil in their heart ♪

We start this half hour
with a story

that is gripping families

in the state of Louisiana
this morning.

[Male reporter] It has
happened again .

The body of a woman
has been found in Whiskey Bay .

[Claire] There was a body,
and then another body,

and another body,
and it was all women.

Oh my God,
we have a serial killer.

[Male reporter] Police are
searching for a killer

preying on women here.

I couldn’t even imagine

what type of person
would do this.

[Female reporter] More addition
to the list

of confirmed
serial killer victims here.

[Dana] 16 postmortem stabs.

Just on, and on, and on, and on.

The murdered actually cut off
limbs of these victims.

A ritualistic-type killing.

Remain calm, I know there is
a lot of fear in this city

and I feel it.

Every time you turn on the news,
another girl has disappeared.

That put the body count
of connected murders at five.

This is serial killer number two
at work.

I think that the fear
in Baton Rouge

was starting to get
at a tipping point.

[Prem] I think we all
go back in time,

you think of Jack the Ripper,

you think of Ted Bundy,

you think of the Zodiac Killer.

But they are so far removed
from us that,

all of a sudden,
here in Baton Rouge...

It’s like, we had this here.

Another murder has now
been linked to a serial killer.

[Male reporter] Sheriff’s
detective said they found

a nude body
of a 43-year-old woman.

It was incredible
to even contemplate,

but could there be
a third serial killer?

[dramatic music stops]

[introspective music]

[Claire] This area has always
been home to me.

It’s just a big,
university town.

Big political town,
it’s the capital.

It’s a fun place,
it’s got really nice people,

and I enjoy living here,
so it’s home.

It doesn’t look like a place
where murders happen, does it?

When I was here,
you walked in numbers.

You didn’t jog alone,
you carried pepper spray...

I had a pepper spray
on my keychain for years!

I mean, everyone runs the lake.
It’s always full of people.

I mean, it is just
the perfect hunting ground

for a serial killer.

[introspective music stops]

[mysterious music]

[Dana] In the late 1990’s
and early 2000’s,

several women from
all different parts of life

were being killed
in Baton Rouge.

I think that
the tension escalated

when there were women

that were taken from their homes
and killed.

[tense music]

Neighbors didn’t know
what happened other than

son was wandering around
in the front yard

looking for his mom.

[David] Randi Mebruer’s son was
about three or four years old.

He had walked next door
to the neighbor’s

and asked if he could
come over to play.

She said, "Well, let’s go
ask your momma."

He said, "My momma’s not there."

They checked on her
and she was just gone.

There was just no sign of her
in the house.

[David] As I arrived
on the scene,

I saw pink garbage bags on
the ground in front of the door

As I walked into the residence,
we say dry marks on the carpet

where there appeared to be
a body dragged across the carpe

from the bedroom area.

We also noticed
on the child’s door...

Blood droplets on his door.

It appears that the attacker
had looked in on the child

while he was asleep.

We found her contact lens
in the blood,

on the carpet
in the living room area.

The attack was very violent.

Blunt force trauma
was committed to her body,

and it knocked
her contact lens out.

[Pat] Ms. Mebruer’s keys
were missing from the house,

but her car was there,

which gives you some pause
as to why that happened.

Many times something’s missing
from a home,

it certainly
draws attention to that.

[tense music]

[David] Randi Mebruer
and Connie Warner

lived a block away
from each other.

If you looked out
Connie Warner’s front door

and looked over the roof
of the house in front of that,

you could see
Randi Mebruer’s house.

[music intensifies]

We were called there
because Connie was missing

and there appeared to be
a struggle.

We noticed different things
turned over in the living room.

We saw where there was struggle
in the bedroom area.

Different things
were thrown around

inside the bedroom.

As we did process
the crime scene and the car,

we noticed that the car keys
were missing from her vehicle.

We found, body fluids, blood,
in the backseat of the car,

but also evidence
on top of the trunk of the car.

We thought maybe
the attacker took her car

to remove her body
from the area,

[keys dangling]

[car starts]

brought the car back
and left it at the house.

[gate closes]

The biggest problem that
happened to this investigation

was that we had a hurricane
come through, Hurricane Andrew.

[raining and wind whooshing]

In his rampages
across Louisiana,

Andrew has left
at least 20 people dead.

So the case was kinda halted.

[music stops]

[introspective music]

When she was found weeks later
by the state capital area,

her body was decomposed

to the point where we could not
find any evidence.

You know,
being a smaller agency,

we did not have
that many homicides in Zachary.

Our case went cold,

but I felt like the cases
were connected.

[tense music]

There’s no doubt in my mind
at the time

that the same attacker

had abducted Connie Warner
away from her house,

used her vehicle, uh...

Same attacker abducted
Randi Mebruer from her house

and used her vehicle
to transfer her body also.

We talked to many witnesses
involved,

including
Randi Mebruer’s family.

Randi had an ex-husband
she was divorced from.

We interviewed him, and...
You know, he was a suspect.

But what bothered us was

why would he leave
his child there?

You can see blood droplets
on the child’s door.

It just didn’t feel
like he was the...

The prime suspect in the case.

According to me.

Unfortunately, Randi’s body
was never found,

and she was never
heard from again.

Not in our wildest dreams
did we think

we might be faced with
a serial killer at this point

who would continue to kill
until we stopped him.

[dramatic music]

We would caution the public

not to let anyone
into your house

unless you know who they are.

I’m thinking, "Is this
somebody they knew?

Is this somebody
in the neighborhood?"

Her murder was just
incredibly brutal.

I’ma be honest,
nobody wants to think

that you may have a serial
investigation taking place

until it’s proven.

Because never know.
Am I gonna be next?

[Reporter] They found DNA
that ties to one individual.

[Pat] Lightbulb goes off
in your head.

It was like coming out
of a dream, just waking up,

and seeing that there were
a series of very vicious deaths.

We’ve changed the whole
complexion of our case.

We now know we have
a serial killer.

[tense music fades out]

August the 23, 1992,

Connie Warner was abducted
from her house.

Her body was found
in Baton Rouge,

during Hurricane Andrew.

In ’98, we had another murder

right around the corner
from Connie Warner’s house,

the victim was Randi Mebruer.

In ’97, we began
receiving complaints

in the area of Oak Shadows,

which is where Connie Warner
and Randi Mebruer lived,

about a peeping tom.

The individual was later
identified as Derrick Todd Lee.

Derrick Todd Lee was known
around Zachary

and maybe
the St. Francisville area.

He had been a Peeping Tom.

He had been arrested for that.

And I think he’d been suspected
of several other crimes.

He was definitely on
law enforcement radar.

[David] Derrick Todd Lee,
in his childhood,

he had some violent tendencies
and did some...

Committed some crimes back the,
including burglary.

Based off what I’ve seen in ’92
with Connie Warner,

a peeping tom in ’97,

and then again,
Randi Mebruer’s case in ’98,

Derrick Todd Lee was definitely
a suspect.

We didn’t have a search warrant,

but he allowed us in the house
to look around.

I’ll never forget that night.
I was in the bedroom.

One side of the closet was very
neat, folded clothes

the other side of the closet
was disarrayed.

While I was searching
his closet,

the hair on the back of my neck
stood up.

I turned around, he was
right there, on top of me,

I had to kind of push him back,
get him off of me.

He became agitated and asked us
to leave the house.

Obviously, I was close
to something in that closet

that he didn’t want me to see.

[music intensifies, then fades]

[Dana] They just didn’t have
any witnesses,

they didn’t have any leads.

But at that point in time,
DNA was just in its infancy.

So there wasn’t a lot of testing
going on in Baton Rouge,

and there was not
the CODIS database.

And that was really before DNA
was...

Was a tool that was used

in law enforcement
in Baton Rouge.

[David] No physical evidence
at the scene.

Not really understanding DNA
back then, in 1998,

we just really couldn’t come up

with a whole lot of evidence
at the time.

[Prem] At this point,
this case can’t be solved.

It becomes what is known
as a cold case.

[tense music]

[Max] January of ’99,

we receive a call that
a body had been discovered

in a remote area of Baton Rouge.

I go to the scene,

and there’s the nude body
of a black female

under a dead end sign.

On the first look,
it was apparent

that the body had been posed
in a manner to draw attention.

There was just something about
the position of her body,

particularly when she was naked.

And you see the human body,
the human outline,

so much better than
if she’d been fully dressed,

but it was if she was floating,
as if she was a ballerina,

the way her arms were placed,

the way that the legs
were placed.

[Bryan] The most striking thing
was the cuttings

on and about her body.

It was almost as if

someone had tried to perform
their own autopsy on her.

She was significantly cut,
like a deep cut,

from almost her hip,
down her leg,

almost to her ankle,

where you could actually
see the bone in her leg.

[Prem] 16 postmortem stabs.
That-That’s a lot.

That’s, like,
somebody overkilled.

Just on, and on, and on, and on.

Obviously, you had
a sick individual

that had committed
this homicide.

[dramatic music]

[Bryan] The fingerprints taken
from the victim,

they were matched
to Katherine Hall.

Katherine Hall had
a criminal record.

[Prem] She was, in fact,
a person who had addictions,

who had prostitution arrests.

So, you have, basically,
a woman who is vulnerable

who is chosen
because of that vulnerability.

The person targeting
very clearly is, to me,

like an animal stalking prey.

Animals pick the weakest
of the lot

to go after and kill.

In the mind of the killer,

these are people
of lesser values,

But they are still
someone’s mother,

someone’s daughter,

they are someone’s loved one.

[Bryan] In addition to
the significant cuttings

on and about her legs and body,

what we found very disturbing is

her killer had also cut off
one of her eyelids.

It’s like, "What are you doing
with this?

Are you taking this?

Are you taking this
as a souvenir?"

[dramatic music intensifies]

In Katherine’s mouth was

what appeared to be
a pubic hair.

With a root on it.

The difference between just
finding a hair without a root

and a hair with a root is that,

if a hair has a root,
it has DNA in it.

When the testing was done,
it was found that

that root had produced
a DNA sample

that could be matched
to somebody.

But there was nobody
in the system to compare it to.

The other thing that was
very unusual was the fact that

there are some very strange
ligature marks on her neck.

And a ligature can be
a piece of cloth,

it can be a piece of cord,

But it could also be a zip-tie.

Her neck appeared to have
a tie like that.

[introspective music]

[Bryan] Several days later,

a citizen found some items

that had been dumped
on River Road.

From where she was found,
it’s a good 15 to 20 miles.

That was later determined to be
the victim’s jacket, ID,

and there was also a zip-tie
that was cut.

A zip-tie sufficiently large

to be placed around
a person’s neck.

[Bryan] We followed up on
every possible lead we could,

but because of
her high-risk lifestyle,

you really don’t find a lot of
people willing to talk about it.

This is a person whose joy
is in the killing

and the mutilation.

This is a totally different
animal.

What a forensic profiler
would call

a ritualistic-type killing.

[music ends]

[Dana] In 1999,

there was
an anonymous phone call

made from a payphone.

[Christopher] The caller said
her name was Florida Douglas,

which is her maiden name.

Which told me that he knew
the victim, he knew her well.

[dial tone]

[music fades out]

[introspective music]

In the state of Louisiana,
a parish is a county,

and each parish
has several cities,

and each city
has a police department.

Each parish or county would hav
a Sheriff’s Department.

[Bryan] At the time,

we’re all working
our own homicides,

but a lot of the dots
aren’t being connected

because of jurisdictional line.

There wasn’t a lot of
communication between parishes,

so if a murder happened here

and a murder happened
in Lafayette,

law enforcement officers
weren’t working together

in order to solve those murders.

[dramatic music stops]

[moody piano music]

[line ringing]

[Dana] In 1999,

there was
an anonymous phone call

made from a pay phone.

[line continues ringing]

[dial tone]

[police sirens]

[Christopher] The caller
that made the 911 call said

there was a dead body
in the old Dynasty Club

that was vacant at the time.

They had shrubbery growing

and greenery growing
inside the building.

There was lots and lots
of trash.

It obviously had been a place

that probably drug users
had frequented.

She was found, she was nude,

and she was on her back,
and she draped over a box.

[Christopher] It appeared
as someone may have

sat on top of her body
and strangled her.

The killer placed her body
on top of that box

so investigators would have
a shock effect

once we see the body.

We were able
to get DNA from that scene

in the form of bodily fluids
we think was semen on her leg.

We fingerprinted the victim
at the crime scene.

We eventually identify her
as being Florida Edwards,

even though the caller said
her name was Florida Douglas,

which is her maiden name.

Which told me that he knew
the victim, he knew her well.

[Dana] At that point in time,
there were no eyewitnesses.

Obviously somebody made
a phone call,

but nobody knew who that was.

[Christopher] The handset
that the caller made

from this pay phone

has tissue of napkin
wrapped around the handset,

which meant that he did not want
to leave his fingerprints.

[Dana] There was just
a long list of women

that were murdered
in Baton Rouge.

Women from all different
parts of life.

There were women

that were taken from their home
and killed,

and then, also,

there were people that
had high-risk lifestyles

that were killed.

[Prem] All of a sudden,

there are a lot of killing
of women of the street.

[Christopher] Two neighbors
in the area of North Acadian

smelled a foul smell
coming from a house nearby.

They contact
the police department.

When I walked inside that house

it was vacant,
it was a lot of trash inside.

Once we got
to the back of the residence,

we discovered
the dead body of a female.

[tense music]

The female body was in advanced
stage of decomposition,

you can tell by the infestation
of insects on her body.

And you could tell that
she had injury to her head.

She was leaning
against the wall,

her legs were spread apart.

[Dana] There was a Bud Light can
along with all the other trash.

That Bud Light can,
and several others,

were fingerprinted,

and there was a fingerprint
lifted from that

that was kept
at the state police crime lab.

[Christopher] Fingerprints from
the body in the house

was matched to Sylvia Cobb,

who was reported missing

days prior to discovering
her body.

She was described
by her family members

to have been
somewhat down on her luck.

And was found to be in areas

where there was
high-risk behavior.

Both Florida Edwards
and Sylvia Cobb

frequented places
that were high risk.

They were at least
in the neighborhoods

where drugs were being used
and prostitution was prevalent.

I think that law enforcement
was concerned that,

because there were similarities

they were both posed,

both found in areas
that were frequented

by drug users and prostitutes,

that these victims may have been
murdered by the same person.

[tense music ends]

[introspective music]

[Christopher] While
investigating the crimes

in north Baton Rouge,

at the same time, we had
another murder took place

near LSU area,
on Stanford Avenue.

Gina Wilson Green lived
on Stanford Avenue,

which is a very well-traveled
road in Baton Rouge,

about four blocks from LSU.

Gina was a nurse,

and she just didn’t show up
for work one day,

and one of her colleagues
tried to get in touch with her

and couldn’t do so.

So he went out to her house
to do a welfare check,

and found her dead in her bed.

We got to the residence
and the backdoor was unlocked.

But once we got in,
we can see the rug

that led from the backdoor
to the bedroom

was sort of shift to the right
a little bit.

Which tells us that, possibly,

a struggle took place
near the doorway.

[mysterious music]

You can see Gina Green laid
in her bed.

A small amount of blood
near her body.

You can see some kind of
ligature marks around her neck.

It’s obvious
that she was strangled.

When they worked
the crime scene in the house,

they recovered a blouse

that they believed
that she was wearing

at the time of the attack.

[Christopher] We realized
she had things missing

from her residence.

Her purse,

she had her cell phone
missing...

I think the killer that took
the property and evidence

from Gina Green house,

his intention probably was
to throw us off track.

We got help from
a local phone company

to track Gina Green’s cellphone

[Dana] They pinged it
out off Choctaw,

this is kind of a northern part
of Baton Rouge,

kind of deserted, kind of like
a warehouse district.

[Christopher] Along with
her cellphone,

we collected evidence
of her mail,

as well as her purse
and denim shorts.

And what’s valuable about that

is that we’s able
to get trace evidence

from those items
that was collected.

[Dana] There wasn’t much
of a DNA database

across the country,

and certainly not
in Baton Rouge.

So they had the genetic identity
of the murderer,

but they couldn’t
do much with ’em,

because there wasn’t
a large database

to draw information from.

We looked at any friends
or co-workers

anyone who knew Gina Green.

[Pat] Gina Green was
a registered nurse.

Was there some connection
between her murder

and her work in some way?

But it was also a forced entry,
a home invasion,

where they went in, secured her
as fast as they could,

and then, ended up
raping and killing her.

[Prem] This is a person
coming into your home,

knowing your schedule,

raping you,

not leaving.

But then, viciously,
making you fight for your life.

And we don’t know who it is.

[music builds up, then stops]

[dramatic music]

[Reporter] So with the city
hanging by a thread

in this summer of scare,

you have to wonder
what’s tugging at that thread.

[Pat] The location
of Gina Greene’s home

was adjacent to LSU.

There’s probably 20,000 females
on the campus of LSU,

so it sent ripples
into that community.

The ladies that lived
down the street

can relate to that,

and they’re in total fear
at that point.

[Woman] Everyone needs
to be aware

that something like this could
happen in their neighborhood.

[introspective music]

[Christopher] May 31, 2002,

we was called to
a townhome complex near LSU.

The victim was discovered
in a residence,

stabbed to death.

Charlotte Murray Pace
is just graduating from LSU.

She is one of
the youngest students at LSU

to ever get her MBA.

Her roommate goes
to their apartment

and finds a horribly bloody
crime scene.

Murray’s body in her bedroom,
lying nude on the floor,

where she had been
stabbed 81 times.

[police sirens]

The crime scene
was disorganized,

there was blood evidence
throughout the townhome.

From the hallway to the bedroom

We saw that,
in the living room, on a sofa,

there was a half-eaten sandwich

[Dana] She had, you know,
like, a sandwich and grapes.

And so, she was obviously...
Her lunch was interrupted.

[Christopher] From there,
was a bedroom

where Charlotte Murray Pace
was discovered.

She had multiple stab wounds,

she’s laying on her back,

and her neck had a very,
very large hole in it.

[Pat] Murray was
in pretty good shape,

she was fairly strong,

and it appeared
that she fought her offender

to the death, literally.

He could not gain control of hr

during this whole ordeal
that she went through hell on.

[Dana] Again, there were
no witnesses.

There was no information
at that point

about who would kill
Murray Pace.

Who was just
a brilliant, young person

that was just beginning
her life.

[dramatic music builds up]

I was home from work
and I’d started fixing supper

when I got a phone call
from a close friend of Murray’s.

[phone rings in the distance]

And she told me
what had happened

and we thought
she must have been mistaken.

’Cause, you know, you just
don’t think that can happen.

It’s not something
you ever imagine.

It’s like falling down
a rabbit hole

that the door shuts behind you,

and you find yourself in a world
that’s completely unfamiliar,

with lots of dark corners
and sharp edges,

and you never
really leave it again.

It’s always with you after that,

that moment
that changes the world.

[sentimental music]

Murray grew up
in Jackson, Mississippi.

She finished high school
when she was 16

and a four-year college
when she was 20,

and had completed her MBA
when she was 22.

She was funny,

she just had a wonderful
sense of humor.

But I think
her greatest attribute

was her ability
to connect with people.

That was her super power.

She was as a good a friend
as you’d ever hope to have.

[tense music]

And I finally went
to Baton Rouge

and met with the coroner,

and made him tell me every
single thing

that happened to her,

[sobbing] ’cause I felt
like I had to know it.

And he showed us on a mannequin
all the stab wounds

he showed us everything

until we just couldn’t
look at it anymore.

I became a prosecutor

because I felt that victims
deserve to have justice.

But the sadness of it
is a little hard sometimes.

These families members,
you know,

you hear the term closure...

That’s just...
That doesn’t exist.

The rest of their lives,

they will live with the loss
that they’ve experienced,

they will wonder how much
their loved one hurt

when they were killed,

and they will never, ever
leave it behind.

It-they just don’t recover.
Not completely. Ever.

[introspective music]

[Christopher] As a detective,

you want to solve
all your cases.

And so, you’re constantly
thinking

about things you’ve done,

things that you should’ve done,

second guessing yourself,
to say,

"Did I look
at all the evidence?"

You really want
to solve all the cases,

not only for the victims,

but the victims families,
as well as the, uh, community.

You got more at stake,

because that serial killer
is not gonna stop his activitie

until he’s apprehended.

It’s a race against the clock.

[tense music]

[Pat] During
our background check,

we learn that Charlotte
Murray Pace once lived

three houses down
from Gina Green.

Murray lived in a house
with other girls

who were in graduate school
on Stanford Avenue.

This was way too coincidental
in our books.

I mean it just sent a shockwave
through all of us.

It stands to reason

that the killer
was Charlotte Murray Pace

when he was stalking Gina Green

And after he killed Gina,

and Murray moved,

he followed her and stalked he.

He stalked,
he stalked in the way

the ritualistic killer stalked.

That is a part of the psycholog
of these killers,

they are like huntsman
with prey.

[Dana] At this point in time,

there’s still had not been
a connection made.

The murder of Gina Green and
Murray

were different enough that,

you know,
Murray’s stabbed brutally,

and her throat
was slashed as well,

and Gina Green was strangled.

They weren’t close enough
that everybody said,

"Oh, definitely,
must’ve been the same person"

[dramatic music]

In July of 2002,
two of the DNA analysts

just happened to be hanging out
in the breakroom

and talking about their cases.

They decided, not pursuant
to law enforcement requests,

but they decided
to just kinda compare

their profiles that
they received from their DNA,

because Murray’s body had

a complete profile
of her attacker.

So they have this conversation,
and they compare the profiles,

and oh my gosh,

the profiles
were an exact match.

I remember the two DNA analysts
screaming, literally,

in the laboratory,

that we had connected
the Gina Green case

and the Charlotte Murray Pace
case,

We were just completely floored

That’s when the thought was,

"Oh my God,
we have a serial killer."

Hopefully to remain calm,

I know there’s a lot of fear
in this city.

- [Woman] Two unsolved murders.
- [Man] Local women in Baton...

Sexual assault, rape,
and a very, very violent death.

You had to worry
about your wife,

you had to worry
about your daughter.

Nobody was safe.

I’m lookin’ ya right between
the eyes and tell you,

we don’t have
anything at this point.

How do you slow this down?
How do you stop it?

How do you prevent
having another victim?

[dramatic music fades]

gun stores are again

selling handguns
at record rates.

Store owners are telling us
most of those buying guns

are female college students.

It’s a situation
that has many people on edge.

[Female Reporter] One of
the murder victims

was Jackson-native Murray Pace,

it’s tonight’s big story

[Claire] There was a big weight

A nervousness, an anxiousness
around campus.

You had Gina Green,
who was killed right off campus

And then you had
Charlotte Murray Pace,

who was a former neighbor
of Gina Green,

and she was stabbed more than
80 times with a screwdriver.

[Dana] Once that connection
is made,

there’s more of an urgency
in Baton Rouge.

I mean, suddenly, we know
that we have a problem,

and that someone else
is likely to be killed

if we don’t do something
to find this person.

So there’s
a great deal of urgency.

It really could have been me,
it could have been my sister,

it could have been
any female student at the time.

[introspective music fades]

I’m going to be honest,

nobody wants to think,
at that point in time,

that you may have a serial
investigation taking place

until it’s proven.

We know that
those sorts of things

are very disturbing
to the public.

So, we walk down that path
very carefully.

[intense music]

[Dana] Pam Kinamore is
a 44-year-old owner

of an antique shop,

she lives in Baton Rouge,
she is married,

and has one son.

On the night in question,

she arrived home,

preparing to take a bath.

She has candles lit,
she has the bathwater run...

And she was just gone.

[Christopher] The victim’s
husband discovered that,

once he got home, the van was
parked in the driveway,

the tub had water in it,
and there’s blood on the rug.

[Woman Reporter] Pam’s husband,
Byron Kinamore, says

he came home late last night.

Pam’s car was in the driveway
of her Briarwood Estates home.

[Male Reporter] Neighbors
noticed lights on in the house

around 10 PM.

[Dana] There was blood found
on the rug in the den.

Other than that, there wasn’t
much sign of struggle.

At the time, we had no clue
as to who may have done this.

The tub was full of water,

so we assume that the victim wa
in the process of taking a bath

when the attacker made contact
with her.

[Dana] Crime scene officers
collected swabs

from those blood spots.

And they were run by
the state police crime lab.

[Woman Reporter] investigators
say this is also too early

to know if this is
in any way connected

to the recent LSU murders.

[dramatic music]

[Dana] On July 16, 2002,

fishermen found her body
off the Whiskey Bay Bridge

on the Atchafalaya Basin.

[Pat] the elements had really
taken their toll on her body.

We also discovered
that her throat had been slit.

[Dana] Investigators also saw
a piece of a phone cord

that they thought
was out of place.

So, they collected
that phone cord

and they put it into evidence.

Pam Kinamore was
a little bit different a victim.

She was a wife,
she was a mother,

lived on the opposite side
of town.

They were able to obtain

at least a partial profile
from her body.

Stunning news this evening
in the murder

of South Baton Rouge
businesswoman Pam Kinamore.

DNA tests released
this afternoon

show Kinamore’s killer
is the same man

who murdered two other woman
in South Baton Rouge.

[Natasha] These three women now

all have been linked
forensically

and have been killed by
the same person, and therefore,

have met the definition
of a serial killer.

I mean, honestly, we were just
completely floored,

because these cases
were kind of different.

Charlotte Murray Pace
had been stabbed.

Pam Kinamore had actually been
abducted from her home,

and then, dumped miles away
in a body of water.

Which made connecting them
through a normal means of things

like M. O., victimology,
things like that,

very, very difficult.

And the only way to connect the
was through the forensic means,

in this case, DNA.

It’s a DNA discovery
that prompted police

to issue a special plea
late today.

[Christopher] Once we got
the match,

there was a press conference
to announce to the public

that we had one killer.

We want everybody to be aware

that it appears that we have
a single, uh... Killer.

[Pat] The decision to
announce that

was extremely hard.

We had a duty to the public,
to let them know.

People had a right
to defend themselves

or prepare themselves

if they thought they might
end up as a victim.

[shotgun goes off]

Public officials are
very hesitant

to use the word "serial killer"

because of the fear it invokes
in the general public.

I’m lookin’ ya right between
the eyes and tell you,

we don’t have anything
at this point

that we can give to the public.

[Pat] So it’s always
a juggling act

to try to make sure you got
all your pieces in place

before you put out that word,

because you’re gonna be besieged
with thousands of tips

And we needed to be ready
for that day when it came.

We would caution the public

not to let anyone
into your house

unless you know who they are.

[Joel] Nobody knew
what was going on.

There was limited information
coming out in the news.

Everybody was scared
and didn’t know what to do.

You had people
that were buying guns,

going for training...

It was the summer of fear.

The fear of a serial killer
is that there is somebody

that is under the radar
of law enforcement.

This person could just
be driving around,

He had apparently followed the,

he apparently had known
some of their routine,

he had known some
of where they had lived.

I’m thinking,
"Is this somebody they knew?

Is this somebody
in the neighborhood?"

People that didn’t
lock their doors

started locking their doors,

People became more skeptical
of everybody they saw,

and became more cautious of,
you know...

"Is that person’s
the serial killer?"

I think everybody
should be cautious.

We know that these guys
will typically kill

until they’re caught,

and our biggest fear is

if the next one was
going to come sooner than later.

[dramatic music stops]

But first, we have
some very important news

regarding the search for
the Baton Rouge Serial Killer.

[Dana] A white man,
in a white truck,

with a naked woman.

a white truck they believe
Pam Kinamore’s body was seen in

shortly before it was dumped
there at the Whiskey Bay Bridge

[Pat] It absolutely went crazy.

It was like a nightmare.

Oh my gosh, have we been wrong?

Are we dealing with
a white man in a white truck?

Everybody in Baton Rouge
apparently knew

who the serial killer was,
except me.

Or is there something else here?

[Pat] This was
a big freakin’ deal.

We’ve changed the whole
complexion and direction

of our case.

That put the body count
of connected murders at five.

So now, we knew
we were on a manhunt.

They found DNA
that ties to one individual,

they’re just not sure
who that individual is...

[Woman] There is fear
in this community,

both on campus and off.

[introspective music]

[Pat] We immediately
called a meeting

with all the Who’s Who of
law enforcement in Baton Rouge.

DAs, US attorneys,

head of
law enforcement agencies,

And we sat at the FBI’s office

and we discussed these cases
at length.

The FBI can assist state and
local law enforcement officers

when they’re conducting
investigations

into serial murders.

The criteria is that there needs
to be three homicides,

and they have to be linked.

The Baton Rouge Police
Department

and the Sheriff’s Office
contacted the FBI

and requested our assistance.

[Christopher] We connected
Gina Green,

Charlotte Murray Pace
and Pam Kinamore through DNA,

now we got confirmation
we have a serial killer

that killed these women.

At that point,
on August the 4th of 2002

the task force was formed
to investigate these homicides.

[Pat] Let us pull together today

to show a force of strength

and send a message
to this offender:

no more victims.

[Jeff] Each agency would provide

a certain number of
investigators to the task force

to assist with covering leads.

[Bryan] There must have been
30 or 40 people.

It was big news, and every day,

the media would want to know
the progress of the task force.

They were really pounding ’em.

[Jeff] We deployed profilers
to the area,

so that they could
review other cases

and help with the investigation.

[Natasha] A typical
serial killer

that’s generated by the FBI

is that white male
between the ages of 25, 35...

That’s what they call
a typical serial killer.

[suspenseful music]

One of the tips that we thought
was very viable was

there was a truck driver
traveling toward Lafayette

on the interstate.

He remembered seeing a white man
in a white truck

with a naked woman
on the Atchafalaya Basin.

And it looked like
she was either passed out

or something was wrong with her.

[Woman Reporter] Now,
investigators say

they still need your help
in finding a white truck

they believe Pam Kinamore’s boy
was seen in

shortly before it was dumped
there at the Whiskey Bay Bridge

This is the type of white truck
investigators are looking for.

[Prem] The task force released
the first profile,

a white male,
driving a white truck.

We’re not 100% certain that thi
is the person we’re looking for

but we do wanna, uh...

Talk to this individual and see

why he was at that location
at that time.

[Pat] So we all made a decision
to go ahead

and put out the description
of the white truck,

the male, and the female.

And it absolutely went crazy.

[phone ringing]

Police department hotline?

[Pat] Calls keep coming in,
hundreds by the day, saying,

"I know somebody
that’s like this,

he acts like this,
he’s weird..."

Okay, what can you tell me
about the pickup he was in?

I mean everybody in Baton Rouge
apparently knew

who the serial killer was,
except me.

And if you’ve ever been
in South Louisiana,

white is the color
of every pickup truck here.

[Dana] Everyone in Louisiana
was looking for

a white man in a white truck,
everyone in Baton Rouge.

[music intensifies, fades out]

I mean, I found myself...
I’d see a white truck

and I’d see some creepy-looking
guy in the white truck,

and I’d automatically think,

"Oh my God, that could be
the serial killer."

There were constant tips
about white men

that were driving white trucks.

Guy pulled up in a white truck,
freaked me out!

And they were constantly
getting search warrants

and taking swabs
from the individuals.

They even had people
with white pickup trucks

writing on their truck,
"It’s not me."

[Pat] I think everybody’s
worst fear...

"How do you slow this down?
How do you stop it?"

That’s a tremendous amount
of pressure.

They swabbed
over 2,000 white men,

but it was a dead end.

There were no more leads.

[introspective music]

[Christopher] In November 2002,

we became aware of a female
that came up missing,

just west of
East Baton Rouge Parish.

We find out that the victim,
Dene Colomb,

went to visit
her mother’s gravesite

in Grand Coteau, Louisiana.

Her vehicle was discovered
near her mother’s grave site.

Her car keys were
still in the vehicle,

as well as her purse.

Her body was found days later

by hunters in the woods.

She had been beaten severely

and at that point in time,
there was a thought, that,

"Hey, we need to check her DNA,

we need to see
if this is the same person

that has been killing
other women."

And when they obtained
the profile, it was.

[Michael] DNA evidence obtained
in Trineisha Dene Colomb case

has matched the DNA evidence

in the Baton Rouge
serial murder cases.

In just over a year,

four women have been murdered
in Louisiana,

their deaths linked
by DNA evidence.

[Dana] It had always
been a theory

that a serial killer
kills within his same race,

but Dene Colomb was
a black female.

So this changed the way
law enforcement looked at it.

At that point in time, it was,

"Okay, are we dealing with
a white man in a white truck?

Or is there something else
here?"

[dramatic music stops]

[mysterious music]

On March 3, of 2003,
Carrie Lynn Yoder,

who was obtaining
her doctorate degree at LSU,

disappeared from her residence,
which was very close to campus.

She had been bringing in
groceries.

And she disappeared.

There was no sign of her.

[Pat] Several days later,
a fisherman found her body

in Whiskey Bay,

probably about 100 yards from
where Pam Kinamore was located.

[Christopher] So, we’s pretty
confident, the task force,

that the same person
that killed Carrie Yoder

killed Pam Kinamore.

[Dana] DNA was recovered
from Carrie Yoder’s body

and was submitted for testing.

Law enforcement found, again,

that the same person
murdered Carrie Yoder

that murdered Dene Colomb,
that murdered Pam Kinamore,

that murdered Murray Pace,
and that murdered Gina Green.

That put the body count
of connected murders at five.

There was a lot of chaos
caused by the fact

that these murders
had all been connected

and that the killer
was still unknown.

Remain calm, I know there is
a lot of fear in this city,

and I-and I feel it.

It’s a tremendous
amount of pressure

on any officer that works
one of these cases

and can’t find an answer to it.

I’ve exhausted everything I can,
and to talk to these families...

It takes a toll on you.

You could see that
they were working very hard

to try to solve theses murders.

We all felt like
we were holding our breath.

[dramatic music stops]

[introspective music]

[Woman Reporter 1] Terror
continues in Louisiana.

police in Baton Rouge are
desperately searching...

[Woman Reporter 2] Dozens
of law enforcement agencies

are involved in the serial
killer investigation...

[Christopher] The stress
is very high in Baton Rouge.

It was stressful
not only in the public,

but also stressful at home,
with your family,

because they wanna know also
who killed these women.

As a task force,

you cannot give details
about your investigation,

because you gotta keep
the evidence

as close to vest as possible,

to make sure the killer
doesn’t know what you know.

[Ann] It was very frustrating
not to be better informed

by the law enforcement official
dealing with the case.

But I also understand we were
not their first priority,

the case itself
was the first priority.

[introspective music stops]

[dramatic music]

[Jeff] One of our state
crime labs told us

about a company in Florida,
called DNAPrint Genomics.

[Dana] This lab out of Florida
actually contacted

the state police crime lab,
and said,

"We’d like to give you

the benefit of this new testing
that we have.

We think that we can
help identify this person,

or at least give you

basic information
about his race."

[Jeff] It was untested,

and we didn’t wanna
just take their word for it,

so we took samples from various
task force officers,

about 10 to 20 of ’em,

and we sent those to the compan

and had them perform their test
on those samples.

We took the samples
from various individuals,

of various backgrounds,

White, black, uh...
Native American, Asian...

And we sent that information
and those samples

to the company.

They conducted their analysis
of those samples,

they sent us
the information back,

and they had identified
correctly the race

of every single blind sample
that we sent them.

[Christopher] We got the DNA
from all the crime scenes

that point to one individual,

But still, we do not have
his identity,

his name or his picture.

So, the DNA that connected the
suspect to the five crime scenes

to the five crime scenes
was sent to Florida.

The results was 85% African
and 15% Native American,

which meant that our suspect
is an African American.

This is a big frickin’ deal,
we’ve changed

the whole complexion
and direction of our case.

Because now, we’re looking at
an African American as a suspect

and not a white male.

[Prem] I kept thinking,

"Oh my gosh,
have we been wrong?"

You know, we’d been going down
rabbit holes this whole time.

New information tonight,

in the case of
the Baton Rouge serial killer

that could change
the focus of the investigation.

[Dana] This was not a white man
in a white truck.

They needed to broaden
their search completely.

This person could possibly be
a dark-complected white male,

a man of mixed heritage,
or a black male.

[Jeff] Once we received
that information,

we reviewed all the previous
tips we had received

regarding African Americans,

and we reopened
all of those tips.

[Pat] When I was sitting in
the task force office one day,

I got a call from somebody
in the town of Breaux Bridge

that said that they had a crime
that we might ought to look at.

[introspective music stops]

[suspenseful music]

Three days before
Pam Kinamore was murdered,

there was an attack

about 45 minutes
from Baton Rouge.

Dianne Alexander was a nurse.

She was in living in a trailer
in Breaux Bridge, Louisiana.

[Prem] We’re looking
for a killer,

we just don’t know who it is.

But in so many of the cases
I’ve tried,

I feel that, sometimes,
God’s hand intervenes.

[Pastor] Father,
may this story come out

the way it needs to be told.

May it be filled with words that
will help someone else to heal,

but at the same time,

give someone else courage
to tell their own story.

And we say thank you
that you’re here with us.

My name is Dianne Alexander,

and I am a survivor.

I was home alone,
ironing my nursing uniform

and making dinner for
my husband and my son, Herman.

[record crackling]

[gospel music playing]

I felt a eerie, uneasy feeling,
like something wasn’t right.

I put on some gospel music.

[gospel music]
♪ Will be revealed ♪

There was a knock on the door.

I wasn’t expecting anyone,

but I lived in the area
for 12 years,

so it wasn’t unusual

just to open the door

and see who was
on the opposite side.

[door cracks open]

So I opened the door,

and there was this young man,
about mid 30’s,

well-dressed,
he had a polo shirt on.

I said, "May I help you?"

And he said,
"Hi, my name is Anthony.

I’m supposed to do construction
for the Montgomerys.

Do you know where they live?"

And I said, "No, I have no idea
who these people are."

So, he asked for the phone,
which was a handset at the time

[gospel music still playing]

So I brought it to him.

I didn’t close the door because
I didn’t wanna appear rude.

And he asked
for the phone directory.

I gave that to him as well.

He asked again,

"Are you sure you don’t know
who these people are?",

And by then, I was frustrated.

And I said, "Look..."

[sounds get more intense]

And that’s when he rushed in.

He overpowered me.

He caught me by the throat,
put me against the door.

[sharp, tense effect]

He whispered in my left ear,

"I’ve been watching you."

[gospel music]
♪ Hear me, Jesus ♪

He removed his hand,
laid me on the floor...

If I tried to fight him,

I knew,
without a shadow of a doubt,

this man would kill me.

He found a telephone cord,
he cut the phone cord,

and he tried
to strangle me with it.

But I ended up
putting my fingers

between my neck and the cord,

I was like this, holding it.

And he didn’t succeed.

It was summertime.
He was sweating profusely.

He was sweating so hard
that it was dripping like water.

Little did he know my eyes were
almost like a camera.

Taking a mugshot.

When he turned forward,

[loud bang]

it was like snapping a photo.

Throughout the whole ordeal,
fear didn’t overtake me.

I did think that
I was going to die.

But then again, I...
I was at peace.

[gospel music still playing]

He hit me with a blunt object,
in my forehead.

I didn’t feel the pain,
I only felt the pressure.

But I have no idea
what he hit me with.

And my head involuntarily
just went to the left.

[record crackling]

And that’s when
Herman showed up.

[introspective music]

[Herman] When I was driving up
to the home,

I notice something very unusual.

My mom’s car was parked home,

and also, another car was parked
in the driveway.

The car was
a gold Mitsubishi Mirage.

[Dianne] When the young man
realized

that someone showed up,

He stomped me in the center
of my abdomen,

and I curled up
in a fetal position.

[Herman] Once I got
in the house,

I heard a voice saying,
"Get a knife."

When Herman entered
through the front door, I said,

"Herman, get a knife,
get a knife!"

Then as I looked over
to the left, toward the voice,

I see daylight down the hallway,

as if someone had fleed
out the backdoor.

I quickly ran back
to the front door,

and I seen the car
speeding away.

So, I got back in the car,
headed west on Highway 31,

trying to find the car
that was parked in the driveway.

I was unsuccessful.

Through the time of trying
to search for the car,

I thought about Mom.
[voice cracks]

Eventually, it’s like a force
just picked me up.

because I knew I had a phone
in my bedroom,

but the gentleman
that tried to kill me

didn’t know
that I had a second phone.

Then I called 911,

I was in and out
of consciousness.

[gospel music fades out]

[tense music]

She was in the emergency room

being taken care of
by the doctors.

She was in, what I would
consider, grave condition.

She described the individual
as a black male,

kind of muscular build,
had a short haircut.

You know, 25 to 35 years old.

Approximately 5’9", 5’10"
in height.

She was lucky to be alive.

[dramatic music stops]

I mean, it triggers
a lot of emotions.

It breaks your heart,

a lot of rage that you don’t
know where to take it out on.

Majority of emotions
wasn’t good emotions.

But you still want
to be positive

through a situation like this

because, at the end of the day,
I still have my mom.

Had Herman not shown up,
I wouldn’t be here today.

[dramatic music]

[Jeff] We talked to
Ms. Alexander at length,

and the profilers
interviewed her as well,

and came to the determination

that it was a very good chance
that our unknown offender

was the person
who assaulted Ms. Alexander.

We asked her, "Did you get
a really good look at him?"

and she said, "Yeah, I-I had
a really good look at him.

While I was
at the police station,

we did a composite
of my attacker.

Maybe that’s why I was taking
mugshots with my eyes,

to remember exactly
what he looked like.

[introspective music]

[Arthur] Mrs. Alexander had
described her attacker

as sweating profusely and
attempting to strangle her.

Based upon her testimony,
it was my belief that

there would’ve been a higher
concentration of contact DNA

around the collar area
of Mrs. Alexander’s dress.

[tense music]

They tested the DNA
that her attacker left behind.

They found it to be enough
to prove

that it was the same person
that had killed

all five of the women
that were murdered.

[Natasha] This was monumental
in this case,

because Dianne Alexander was
the first victim that lived.

And the DNA that they were
able to retrieve in her case

that was linked
to the serial killer

is the first eyewitness
that we had that could tell us

what the serial killer
actually looked like.

She is a true living witness
who can say, "Yeah, it’s him.

[Dana] Also, they were able
to analyze

the phone cord that was still
at Dianne’s Alexander’s house.

And they were able
to match it up to the cord

that was found at the dump site
of Pam Kinamore.

[Arthur] That shifted
the investigation

to include our case

to the South Louisiana
Serial Killer Task Force,

and a decision was made
to make a news release.

We had a jigsaw puzzle

but didn’t know
what the picture looked like.

Until this weekend.

[Christopher] A composite
drawing was given to the public

that was created from the memory
of Ms. Alexander

the time she was attacked.

[David] The sketch we saw with
the description that, uh...

that Dianne Alexander gave
and everything else,

When I saw the sketch,
I knew who it was.

It was Derrick Todd Lee.

[Natha

she was able to give them
a basic description

of the person that attacked her.

Dianne Alexander had been
beaten badly,

and she had bled over
a large portion of the clothing

that she was wearing.

And it was his sweat
that was found

in a void portion
of her clothing.

And that was what they were abl
to get his DNA from.

[introspective music]

[Christopher] Derrick Todd Lee
lived in St. Francisville,

He worked laying concrete,
he also worked at local plants,

he did labor work.

So he’s used to working
with his hands.

He’s a very strong male.

[Pat] He had a fairly
significant arrest record.

Mostly peeping tom,
trespassing, those type crimes.

But the never collected
the DNA of Derrick Todd Lee.

[dramatic music]

[David] On the Randi Mebruer
case, back in 1998

Derrick Todd Lee, he was
my number one suspect.

I’ll never forget the night

we went to
Derrick Todd Lee’s house,

searching his closet,

and that the hair
on the back of my neck stood up

[tense music builds up]

You know, we’d been
working the case,

interviewing individuals,
talking to many people.

We began looking
at different cement slabs

that had been
newly poured by him.

We searched a swamp area
in the St. Francisville area

down the road
from where he lived,

to no avail.

We just couldn’t come up
with a whole lot of evidence

at the time.

No physical evidence
at the scene,

not really understanding DNA
back then, in 1998.

[tense music builds up]

This case started off
basically as a homicide in 1998,

abduction case
from Zachary, Louisiana.

It kind of stayed
in the back of my mind,

because it was still
an open case.

Randi Mebruer’s body
was never located.

When the murders in Baton Rouge
started increasing in frequency

I started
looking into this again.

When I start digging

into Derrick Todd Lee’s
work history,

I find out he’s doing
construction work

around the gates and lakes
at LSU,

and that he’s been
hauling trucks,

crossing Whiskey Bay
three times a week,

where these bodies
are turning up.

I dig a little bit further,

and I find out he’s worked
for J.E. Merrit,

where Connie Warner’s body
turned up, in late ’92.

It’s starting to look more and
more than just a coincidence.

I did a criminal history search
on Lee

and found out
that he was in jail

when these murders stopped.

And he was outta jail when
these murders were happening.

But we still don’t have
Derrick Todd Lee’s DNA.

[tense music]

[Dianne] When I looked
at the six photos,

I looked at each face,
each nose,

from the hair
to the facial features,

the shape of the face,

until I got to Derrick Todd Lee.

And I knew, without a shadow
of a doubt,

he was the one.

[dramatic music]

[Joel] We get the subpoena,
and we go to look for Lee.

When we first got there,
Lee was belligerent,

he was hollering and screaming
a bunch of expletives,

and most of them were directed
at McDavid.

It was kind of a strange deal,

because he wouldn’t do
the DNA swab

if McDavid was present.

As he saw me, he asked that

he didn’t want nobody
from Zachary P. D. there,

so I left the area.

They walked inside his house,
they swabbed him,

the swab was turned over

to the Louisiana State Police
Crime Lab.

[tense music]

Once we took
Derrick Todd Lee’s DNA,

I asked the lab technician
to look at our evidence

that we had submitted
on Randi Mebruer.

[Natasha] With
the Randi Mebruer case,

the pink bag was never tested
in serology,

it was actually tested
for fingerprints.

they were certain that the bag
had been used to, possibly,

line whatever was used

to transport the body away
from the crime scene,

because Randi Mebruer’s body
has never been found.

We processed those garbage bag,
and when we were looking

at the possible bloodstains
that were on the garbage bags,

one of the things
that we also did was

we looked at them underneath
an alternate light source.

If you’ve watched
any of the forensic shows,

you’ve seen
the little blue light

that makes
certain body fluids glow.

And what we noticed was there
was actually a little stain

in the edge of one of
those bloodstains that glowed.

And that was when we realized

we actually had a semen stain
in the edge of a bloodstain.

We had no idea
that a case that old

was gonna be linked
to the serial killer.

[dramatic music]

[Pat] In May of 2003,

we get a call
in the middle of the night.

Unbeknownst to us, we got a hit.

It’s Derrick Todd Lee.

A suspect has been identified i
the homicides of Gina Green,

Charlotte Murray Pace,
Pam Kinamore,

Dene Colomb and
Carrie Lynn Yoder.

I’ll never forget it,
it was a Sunday.

I had got through
cutting grass at my house,

and I received a call from
the task force, and said,

"Hey, look, just want to
let you all know, right now...

Your DNA has connected,

the individual
is Derrick Todd Lee."

[Pat] We put together
a SWAT team

comprising of FBI agents
and BRPD

and we hit the home of Derrick
Todd Lee in West Feliciana.

He was not there.

We secured the scene,
the house was searched,

there was no evidence
that he was there.

So now, we knew
we were on a manhunt.

for Derrick Todd Lee

has been issued
in East Baton Rouge Parish

on the charges of first-degree
murder and aggravated rape,

and an extensive manhunt
is currently underway.

We urge our residents
to be cautious

and consider Mr. Lee
to be armed and dangerous

and possibly still
in West Feliciana Parish.

It wasn’t time to relax.

We still did not
have the person in custody,

and we’s praying that he did not
victimize anyone else.

The FBI received some tips that
he was in Atlanta, Georgia.

We believe he’s here in Atlanta
and we need to get him arrested

Derrick Todd Lee,
if you can hear me,

I met with your mother
this morning.

She has asked me to ask you
to please turn yourself in.

[dramatic music]

[Jeff] Investigators
in Atlanta, Georgia

located him and arrested him.

We now have the subject
in custody,

and soon, he will be transporte
back to Baton Rouge.

I fell into a ball on the floor
in my kitchen,

and I literally weeped
for probably an hour.

I just can’t even tell you

the emotions that were running
through my body at that point.

It was a nightmare
that had finally ended.

[Dianne] When Derrick Todd Lee
was finally captured,

It was a... A sense of relief,

that now, he’s behind bars

and he won’t hurt or kill
anyone else.

That was an overwhelming joy
for me at that moment.

[Dana] The DNA
of Derrick Todd Lee

was also connected
to Randi Mebruer

as well as Geralyn DeSoto,
over in West Baton Rouge.

So, the total at that time
was seven.

[Christopher] Once we
apprehended Derrick Todd Lee,

we brought him in
to be questioned.

We confronted Derrick
with the fact

that we had the DNA
on these multiple crime scenes.

He’s still denying
he committed these acts.

But one thing that was striking
that he told me, he said,

"I confess to God,
why should I confess to men?"

[Ann] To see Derrick Lee
the first time was a shock.

you kept looking at him
for some sign,

some mark of the demon,

Some-something that made him
recognizable

as subhuman or monstrous.

It seemed impossible
that somebody

who was an ordinary human being

which you could have passed
on the street a hundred times,

could be the person that he was.

[sentimental music]

[Dana] It was huge.

The city’d been on edge,

and law enforcement had been
on edge as well,

just trying to find this person.

[sentimental music]

[Max] I received a call,
I believe it was on a Saturday.

It was on a weekend that, uh...

a body had been located
in a remote area

in the extreme North end
of the parish.

I drove out to see if I could be
of any kind of assistance,

and when I got there,

it was a very bad scene.

[tense music]

The body had been there
for a while.

It had been, positioned over
some brush and some debris

in a very degrading manner.

When we rolled the body,
we discovered that

her hands had been removed.

[suspenseful music]

[Prem] Horrific things
in this case.

The horror of finding
this decomposing body,

but the horror
of it being without hands.

[Max] She also had
a ligature mark

where she had been choked
to death.

You couldn’t see the mark,

because of the collar of insects
around her neck.

[Bryan] The condition
of her body and the cuttings,

very, very unusual.

Just... Just not something
you see in a homicide scene.

The victim was identified
as Johnnie Mae Williams,

another black female

who was living
a high-risk lifestyle.

Because her hands had been
severed,

she was starting to get
some bug activity on her body.

And so, we collected
some of the bugs, because,

in our minds, we thought someone
had cut her hands off to keep...

I-I guess as a trophy.

And then, some of
the other detectives

immediately remembered that

one of Katherine Hall’s eyelids
had been cut off.

[Prem] The alarm went off
at that point.

With the deaths
of Johnnie Mae Williams

and Katherine Hall years before

this is not a coincidence.

And then you got
these ritualistic cuttings

on both of them.

They absolutely know
at this point

this is serial killer
number two at work.

[tense music ends]

[Max] We knew that we had
something

when we discovered the body
of Johnnie Mae Williams

and it was so similar

to the one four years earlier,
with Katherine Hall.

[Bryan] During the autopsy,

where her hands
had been severed,

there was another hair found

embedded in one of the bones
of her arms.

[Prem] And the hair
was most likely left

by the person
who was doing the cutting

and the taking
of her hands away.

[Bryan] Ultimately,
the hair collected

from Johnnie Mae’s body

matched the hair collected
from Katherine Hall’s body,

So we knew it was
the same killer.

We knew we had the same person.

[tense music]

[Prem] First, we had the violent
series of home invasions

with a serial killer,
Derrick Todd Lee.

Then we segue into
ritualistic serial killings,

murdering prostitutes,
generally speaking,

and doing multiple cuttings.

[Bryan] We realize now
that we probably had

a second serial killer
in Baton Rouge.

[Max] Derrick Todd Lee had
just been captured.

And now, we’re fixing
to tell everybody

that we’ve got another
serial killer,

separate and apart from Lee,

who we believe
had killed these two women.

[introspective music]

[Dana] Prior to the late 1900s
and early 2000, in Baton Rouge,

there had been no serial killer,
or at least that we knew of.

This was, you know, something
that was just totally foreign.

All the sudden,
we know that we have one,

and then, it looks like
we have two.

[Bryan] Women were scared
to go out by themself.

It just really almost had
Baton Rouge in a state of panic.

[dramatic music]

In February of ’04,

some citizens called
from off of Ben Hur Road,

which is just south of LSU.

They noticed the body
of a white female

laying on some brush
in the canal.

[music becomes tense]

The first responding deputies
that came up on it

noticed immediately

that the body had been laid
upon the brush

in a posed position.

The detectives,
upon closer inspection,

realized that one of her arms
had been severed

from the elbow down.

When the body was rolled over,

there was also a very
significant cutting

on one of her legs.

But it was very peculiar

that the cutting was cut
almost in a perfect square.

About a three- or four-inch
piece of flesh

had been removed from her leg.

So we immediately knew
it was the same person.

Access to the scene was limited
by a very, very small gate.

The gate was ajar

and it was just enough room

for a small vehicle
to go in and out.

Well, there was a mud puddle
in the middle of that gate

and it left
a beautiful tire track,

that we believed
must have belonged

to the last vehicle
that had gone through that gate.

And we believed that was gonna
be the vehicle of the killer.

The tire prints,
the tire marks were

what I call
the smoking gun in this case.

[Max] Our crime scene tech,

he made a cast
of the tire tracks

both going into the gap
that entered into the field

and also the tracks
that backed up to the brush pie

where her body was found.

[dramatic music ends]

[suspenseful music]

[Bryan] During the autopsy,

scrapings were taken
from underneath her fingernails

and submitted for DNA analysis.

The victim was identified
as Donna Bennett Johnston.

Same similarities as the other
two victims that we had.

Very high-risk lifestyle.

She had had some battles
with addiction,

and then, ultimately,
landed on the streets,

in the same areas
as Katherine Hall

and Johnnie Mae Williams.

We got fingernails scrapings
from Ms. Johnston

that were compared
for nuclear DNA

to the root of the hair
from Katherine Hall,

and then, the shaft
of that same hair

compared to the shaft
of the hair

discovered
with Johnnie Mae Williams.

And ultimately,
they all matched.

[music intensifies]

So, we knew at that point
that the same killer

had committed the homicide
of Donna Johnston,

Katherine Hall,
and Johnnie Mae Williams.

We knew without a doubt that
we had the same serial killer

and that they were probably
more victims out there.

[introspective music]

[Max] At that point,
we put a task force together

involving
the Sheriff’s office, the FBI,

Louisiana state attorney
general’s office,

Louisiana State Police,
and the Baton Rouge City Police.

We had to ensure
our victims’ families

that this case was going to
be worked just as diligently

as Derrick Todd Lee’s.

We would also take this
opportunity to ask any agency

that if they have murders
they believe are similar,

to contact the task force.

Anything of that nature
that remains unsolved

after Derrick Todd Lee
will be looked at,

it’s simply a matter
of which ones we prioritize.

The FBI finally put together
a profile

of what they thought
this person would be.

This was probably a white male,

mid-30s to 40 years old,

He does not look threatening,

he does not look like
he’s foaming at the mouth.

He will start
being a perfect gentleman

until he turns into that monster

and then forces his way in
and does what he does.

The task force sat down and
talked about all the evidence

that we had to go on

and we talked about
investigative strategies.

And the tire tracks,

we determined that was probably
going to be our best lead.

The East Baton Rouge Parish
Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene

had taken molds of those
tire mark impressions

as well as photographs,

and their crime scene
investigators had determined,

by talking to various
tire manufacturers,

that the tires were
Goodyear Aqua Tread Three.

[camera click]

What’s interesting about the
Goodyear Aqua Tread Three tires

is that it’s
an after-market tire,

so that means it’s sold
at a tire shop.

When you go to a tire shop
to buy tires,

your name is going to be
in a database,

because they’re gonna have to
get rid of your old tires

and that gets tracked.

We found out from Goodyear
that the tires were sold

at three different locations
in the Baton Rouge area.

When we went
to these three shops,

we obtained a list of people

that had purchased the Goodyear
Aqua Tread Three tires.

We had approximately 100 names.

We took the list, divided it up

amongst the investigators
on the task force,

and we were tasked
with going out

and talking to the owners
of these tires

and seeing
if they would cooperate.

One of the things that I did
when I got my list is,

I had an analyst run
their criminal histories,

and based upon my list
of approximately ten people,

two of them had prior arrests.

And one of the top two
was Sean Vincent Gillis.

[tense music]

[Jeff] The following day,

I went to see Mr. Gillis
at his residence.

When I approached
Mr. Gillis’s house,

we walked past a vehicle

and noted on the vehicle,

before we even knocked
on the door,

that the Goodyear Aqua Tread
Three tires were on the vehicle.

Mr. Gillis was very unassuming,

and he asked us to come around
to the backyard to talk to him.

When I asked him if he knew
Johnnie Mae Williams,

Gillis told me he did,
in fact, know her.

[lighter turning on]

He said, "Johnnie Mae and I
are friends.

She used to actually
work for me,

She would come in periodically
and clean my home.

He said that he knew
Johnnie Mae Williams very well,

said they had
had sexual relations before,

said she had been with him
in his car on many occasions.

[Jeff] That’s when we asked him
for a swab.

He readily volunteered
to provide a DNA sample

I handed that swab over

to our evidence custodian
that was part of the task force,

and she immediately took it

to the Louisiana State Police
Crime Lab.

[Bryan] After more conversation
with Sean,

he agreed to come down
to the office for questioning.

[Jeff] He was smoking
a cigarette,

and I remember,
before he got into the vehicle,

he smoked half his cigarette
and he threw it on the ground,

and he said,
"Let’s get this over with."

[dramatic music]

It was probably the most
disturbing interrogation

I’ve ever heard in my life.

[Bryan] He said that
"the moonlight hit her bone,

and I just wanted to touch it."

A policeman looked at me,
and said,

"You didn’t know you were living
with a serial killer?"

It’s like being caught
in a story that can’t be true,

but you can’t get out of it.

As soon as you can
take a breath

and you realize
that that’s over,

it’s not over.

It was incredible
to even contemplate.

A suspected serial killer,

making him the third man
accused of that title

in the Baton Rouge area
in the last ten years.

Could there be
a third serial killer?
