On that particular day,
I was running my 18th Boston Marathon.

I'm a runner first and a policeman second.

That final stretch where I see
all my officers along the route

coming into Boston,
your adrenaline starts to flow.

My husband John
and myself were there to watch

our daughter cross the finish line.

We were so excited.
She had trained for months for this.

So we, we were there to support her.

It was just a party atmosphere.

I just remember looking up at the sky.

It was really blue
and it was a beautiful day.

Jim was coming to meet me.

Jim and I had been on four dates
before this and I remember

feeling nervous, so I texted him and said,

we're right in front of Marathon
Sports when you get here.

I remember coming down
the finish line and seeing

the excitement, the joy.

There's nothing better
here in the City of Boston.

I remember waving to my wife
and then crossing the finish line

in three hours and 34 minutes.

At about 2.45,
we were in front of Marathon Sports

and the finish line
was about 25 feet to our left.

John and I were standing side
by side, watching for Nicole,

so we could see her coming
and we could actually watch her

cross the finish line.

I could only hear ringing in my ear.

I saw people screaming,
but I couldn't hear anything.

And then, it was all of a sudden,
you know, snap,

and I could start to hear things.

We were laying in glass and soot

and I still hadn't made sense
of what had happened.

I kind of took inventory of myself
and knew that I was okay.

John instantly said,
"Oh God, Karen, my leg, my leg."

There were just body parts on the ground
around me and blood.

I looked down at my own legs.

My jeans were shredded and bloody
and I could see the bone.

I remember thinking,
I'm gonna lose my leg.

I remember having kind of a moment
of tunnel vision.

I was trying to take in what was going on,

and the reality of it was overwhelming.

I looked down and that's when I saw
how badly injured John was.

There was a huge gaping hole in his leg.

The muscle was sticking out,
and with every heartbeat,

the blood was spurting out.

It was obvious
that we were in terrible trouble.

And at that moment...

...the second bomb went off.

Oh, God. Oh, my God.

I was trying to break down the,

the fences, the barriers,
to get to people.

The victims themselves
really weren't doing the screaming

and crying.
It was more the, the onlookers.

The people who were really
hurt were almost in shock.

Help me.

John was saying, "I'm tired.

"I just wanna go to sleep."
I said, "John, don't go to sleep.

"Don't close your eyes,
keep talking to us."

Because we were afraid
if he closed his eyes,

he'd never open them again.

Get out the zone.
Get out the zone.

I was running late
to get to the Marathon's finish line.

I had got a text from Michele
saying that she was in front of

Marathon Sports
and I remember calling her

and getting her voicemail.

That was pretty scary,
because I didn't know what had happened,

so I just left her a voicemail
to give me a phone call

and let me know that she was okay.

I can confirm
that two devices just went off

at Boylston and Exeter.

All units, extreme caution.

All units be advised
about explosive devices.

Guys, everyone use caution, please.

- UCC, did I hear that correctly?
- Yeah, CH, can confirm that,

It was clear
that two bombs had gone off in rapid

succession and that we had been attacked
by what I thought to be terrorists.

We believed that there may be
a third device.

Al-Qaeda often hits in threes
and we thought we'd have another

bomb on scene.

So I called the head of the FBI.

Commissioner Davis?

He said, Rick, send your SWAT teams
and send your bomb technicians

as soon as possible.
Well, I turned on the TV.

I was sick to my stomach.

I knew that from that moment on
that we were gonna do everything

we possibly could to solve this crime
as quickly as we possibly could.

Why would anybody do this thing to us?

What was going through their mind?

Why would they do it?

Why? Why are these people doing this?

They hurt individuals
that they don't even know,

have no reason to do it.

How... What's, how sick can they be?

Heavy trauma.
Exeter and Boylston intersection.

Exeter and Boylston, heavy trauma.
Exeter and Boylston,

It worried me enormously
and it worried all of us.

We didn't know what
we were dealing with.

There was a very, very important
conversation that I convened.

And I had the FBI and the ATF
and the whole alphabet soup

of law enforcement entities.
State, local and federal.

And I said, "Look, we need one agency
in charge of the investigative

"part of this, and who's it gonna be?

"I don't care who it is,
but let's all decide now

"who it's gonna be.

Everyone said,
"We think it should be the FBI."

It was an enormous responsibility.

I felt like the weight of the world
was on my shoulders.

I immediately called my assistant
special agents in charge.

Rick.

So I get a call from
Rick DesLauriers saying,

"You need to get back
as soon as possible."

I was in Arizona, with my family
and I said, I will, just the next flight.

We were under attack, this was war.

You know, words didn't do it justice.

I mean, Boston doesn't deserve this.

It was devastating, it truly was.

My wife actually turned to me, she said,
"You go get them."

Often times in international
terrorism cases,

an international terrorism groups

such as Al-Qaeda, Lashkar-e-Taiba,
Tehrik-i-Taliban

will claim responsibility
very shortly after an attack is launched.

We didn't have that in this instance.

Nobody claimed responsibility
for the attack.

We didn't know
if they were intent upon setting

more bombs off.

We had to do everything we
possibly could do get them identified

and arrested as quickly as possible.

They took John
through the doors to the OR.

I kissed him and told him I loved him,

then I watched him as far
as I could until he disappeared.

I was in shock. It didn't really
seem like it had happened.

We were standing on the sidewalk

to watch the end of a marathon.

And now, we're in a hospital
and John's dying.

I was essentially a civilian surgeon

dealing with a military wound.

I was praying to God
that he would save John

and I didn't let myself truly believe

that this is how our life together
was going to end.

A tremendous number of bags of blood

had already been given to the patient.

And then, Mr. Odom's heart stopped.

We still do not know who did this or why,

and people shouldn't jump to conclusions
before we have all the facts.

But make no mistake,
we will get to the bottom of this

and we will find out who did
this, we'll find out

why they did this.

Any responsible individuals,
any responsible groups,

will feel the full weight of justice.

We brought in
hundreds and hundreds of FBI agents

from across the country,
primarily to assist

in our evidence collection process.

From the Command Post
in Boston we were delegating leads,

ferrying up officers, troopers, agents,

just dispatching them
to interview people at the hospitals,

down at the marathon scene,

and this was all being
tracked on the computer.

What have we got?

People were going
through any possible suspects,

any sort of technical
surveillance coverage

that they may have at the time,
anything that cryptically

or not that would be,
mentioned Boston, the marathon,

and it was being done across the country.

State Department, CIA,
everyone was looking at what they had.

There were a multitude of national

and international media
organizations that were filming

the Boston Marathon.

You had buildings in that area
that had cameras deployed

on them anyway, and so it was one
of the most photographed spots

in Boston that day.

We had FBI agents scouring the streets,

acquiring all the video evidence
that could possibly contain

relevant information.

I turned the corner
to head to the finish line

to see my daughter.

Penetrating wounds,
people that were impaled.

The first patient rolled in.

He was near death and then
it was just one after another

after another.

I had to believe
that John was going to be fine.

I couldn't let myself believe
that he could actually die.

Dr. Kalish came out...

Mrs. Odom.

...and he couldn't make
good eye contact with me.

He's had severe injuries to his legs.

And that was worrisome to me

because I was afraid
of what he was gonna say next.

I said, Your husband's alive.

Thankfully his heart started again,

but I don't know
where this is going yet.

We're gonna take it hour by hour.

I couldn't promise them
that he was gonna make it out

of the hospital alive.

We just didn't know
how many terrorists we had out there,

so a slow, methodical
search for evidence was underway.

I think we all realized
we had a job to do,

and that was to get whoever
was responsible for blowing up our city.

We were on our hands and knees

recovering physical evidence
and we'd come across a hand

or a leg, and that was really tragic.

Fellow citizens' legs
and arms and hands, you know?

Nothing can train you for that.

Of course
we're also learning more

about the victims now.

At least three people have died,
including an eight-year-old boy.

More than 140 other people were wounded.

Witnesses are describing
horrific injuries.

There were two bodies

that were left at the scene.

We had a young boy,
later determined to be about

eight-years-old, and a young woman,
about 21 or 22.

So one of my officers went
into the restaurant and took

tablecloths off the restaurant tables
and brought them out

and out of respect for the bodies,
put tablecloths over the kids'.

Most of the men there were fathers
and they could only

empathize with the victims' parents
and siblings,

so the decision was made
that we would just stand by regardless,

taking turns to stand vigil
over these two young people

until they could be properly removed.

Tuning in right now...

I remember the news
being very specific,

that the bomb had gone off
in front of Marathon Sports.

The scene
must have been complete pandemonium,

people just running...

Looking at my phone,
I finally put it together.

Literally her text message was,
"I am in front of Marathon Sports."

I distinctly remember realizing
that she probably was killed in the blast.

And I think at that point
I really was taken back that I had

just met this girl and that she had
just been taken from my life.

Everybody's in shock.

Literally unbelievable,
you just can't imagine

that somebody would wanna...

You could see the terror
that was created here

in the city by this bombing.

I was haunted by the possibility

that more bombs could go off.

That was a potential possibility
until we arrested the subjects.

We didn't know
who the perpetrators were,

what their reasons were,
no-one had taken responsibility.

Frankly, we didn't know
whether it was over.

What's next?
You know, what's next for Boston?

What's next for somewhere
else in the country?

I mean, it was unknown.

You can do that in the Boston Marathon,
you can do that anywhere.

A great deal of effort went into building

this crime scene starting
that Tuesday morning.

The main thing
we were looking for was parts

of the bomb.

Anything possible that could
lead us to, number one,

what was the device used

and who could possibly
make this type of device?

From the device, you can find
how sophisticated the bombs are,

so that was a key piece
of our evidence.

The next morning, I got a phone call.

This phone call actually woke me up.

Hello?

It was Michele on the phone.

I just had this
overwhelming feeling

that I needed to connect with him
and talk to him and it was kind of,

you know, like an, almost
an out-of-body experience,

just having this feeling.

Like, that was the person
that I needed to talk to.

I was a little surprised
to hear from her

because, you know, just the night before,
I'd thought she was dead.

And I just said,
Can you come today?

and he said, "Yeah, I can come today."

It was really overwhelming.

We were finding evidence quite quickly.

We were finding stuff at every step,

especially the closer we got to
the scene of the blast

where the bombs actually exploded.

We found so many pieces
of ball bearings,

individually and then chunks of them
together that were held

together by Vaseline.

Ball bearings are a classic item

that terrorists would use
to injure and maim.

They disperse and devastate.

It's like little mini bullets,
shrapnel that go everywhere.

A lid from a pressure cooker had
blown up onto a lower roof

of a local hotel,

so we now knew
this was a pressure cooker bomb.

We were dealing with some
serious people who had done

some research.

Still did not know who it would be.

I called my mom and I said,

I need you to bring me my brush,
'cause I knew Jim was coming

and I wanted to brush my hair.

I don't think so.

And there were these just pieces of,
you know,

debris and stuff all in my hair
and my mom said,

"This is nylon, you know,
what could this be?"

and that was, the nurse kind of said,

I think we need to go let
somebody know about this.

So we were finding
tiny shreds of fabric.

If the bomb was in a backpack,
it would shred

and that is what we were finding,
is the shreds.

So those were some early signs
that, you know,

the bomb was likely
placed into a backpack.

I had only gone out
with Michele about

four times and I was nervous
about going to see her.

I didn't know her family
or really even know her friends.

But she invited me right in.

I just remember him coming in
with flowers and thinking,

"Oh he's such a good guy,
he brought me flowers."

I think I was surprised
at the extent of her injuries.

And I was a little taken back.

She was going into a surgery
just, you know,

in the next hour, and I don't think
I expected that at all.

Time was very much
of the essence.

We needed to find them to stop them,

and there was a great deal
of pressure to get it right

and to do it fast.

Who are they, where are they
and is this gonna go on again?

At this point, we had hundreds
of thousands of photographs

from viewers, media
and the retail stores.

We received packages of photographs.

People would download pictures
off their phones

and they would send them in.

We were just looking
for something that stuck out.

The most important videos early on

were going to be the ones
that were directed at the crime scenes,

so that we could identify
who put the devices down,

'cause somebody
had to put the device down.

We were looking for signs
of anomalous activity.

Individuals who didn't look like
they were there

to watch the marathon.

Individuals who might have been
pacing back and forth.

Individuals who might have been
carrying something

that could have contained
an explosive device.

Individuals placing such a container
down at a particular moment

in time near the bombings.

There was an awful
lot of video and, you know,

that in itself took time.

There's this impression from CSI

that you solve everything
in ten minutes with video forensics.

But it's just tenacious labor
of looking at the video,

over and over and over again.

Each time you watch a video,
you see different things.

It's perception. What you perceive
and what you can pull

from a video changes over time.

I think we all felt pressure.

We didn't want anything
to be lost, to miss something,

so we'd watch it over and over and over
and the pressure was extreme.

I think you just go on adrenaline.
They're out there

on the street and we just
wanted to find them

as soon as possible.

Michele went in
for her second surgery.

I think at that point I just needed
kind of a break

from everything, and I hadn't eaten yet,

so I stopped at a little
Chinese food restaurant.

I didn't have anyone to talk to, really,
I didn't feel like it at the time,

and I think emotionally, at that point,
everything finally caught up to me.

And I was eating my food
and I was completely crying

into my meal and I just remember there
was only one other person

in the restaurant,
it was a Boston police officer.

You know, I think everyone knew
what was going on in the city that day

and I think they... Nobody questioned me
or looked at me at all.

Hours of the same video,

hours of watching the bombing
over and over and over again.

You know, I would be lying if I said
that it didn't take a toll on us.

It's very difficult to watch that.

I saw the bomb actually
go off so many times,

it will stick in my head forever.

Oh, my.

You gotta see this.

Watch this.

There.

Backpack.

No backpack.

My supervisor,

who was leading the effort
to review the video evidence,

called me and said,
"Boss, I believe we have at least

"one of the bombers identified."

It was a dramatic and tragic video.

It was disturbing.

It brought tears to our eyes.

It brought tears to our eyes
each time we watched it.

It was a video that showed
the crowd that was watching

the marathon, and we identified
one individual in that crowd.

He was wearing a white hat
and he was walking back and forth,

talking on his cell phone.

It was just the slightest movement

that you end up seeing a backpack,
and you actually see

the individual put it down.

He was walking away from the scene

of the explosion
about 15 seconds or so before

the second bomb went off.

This was an enormous breakthrough.

One thing that was very
distinctive for us was

the white hat, and so from that point on
he was known to us

as "White Hat".

That's my mission, that's my guy,
that's who we're going after.

That image, well, it was chilling
because it's one thing to

have someone describe
that a homemade explosive device

was placed at this point, that point,
and set off this way and that way.

It's another thing to associate
that with a human being,

with a face, and to try to imagine

what kind of person does that.

What kind of person enables
that kind of destruction of innocence?

He was considered armed
and extremely dangerous,

but we did not know where he was.

There is no magic bullet
to get the identity of this man.

The image that we have
is extremely grainy.

Not even a great photo of this individual.

So now our team objective
is to identify where that individual

and when that individual came
onto the crime scene itself,

and was that individual with anybody else
when they came onto the crime scene?

The citizens of Massachusetts

and the City of Boston should expect
to see the FBI and its JTTF partners

conducting investigative activity
in the greater Eastern Massachusetts

and Boston area.

We all had that uncertainty
of not knowing when the next bomb

would go off,
and that drove the urgency of finding

this individual.

When I woke up from surgery,
that's where the smell came back.

You kind of just roll on your side
and you get a whiff of the explosion.

It smells like sulfur,
and maybe like metal

and then I remembered everything.

I couldn't really move my left leg at all
and I remember

looking at the nurse and saying,
I'm not gonna lose anything?

and she said...

No, honey, you're not gonna lose anything.

Michele was
just coming out of her surgery.

You know, she was tired from
being under the anesthesia,

but she was just still smiling.

Every time you saw her,
in as much pain that she was in,

she was always
smiling and happy.

That was the first night
that I spent with her there

and I don't think I left her
for more than a day

for, you know,
her whole stay at the hospital.

And he held my hand every single night
that he was there.

So we could tell from the video footage

that White Hat had made a phone call,
so, you know,

we knew there was a phone in play.

Had he made a call
while he was at the crime scene,

he was calling somebody else,

in our belief that was our hunch
that was involved.

But it also gave us
another known point,

a time and a location
where a telephone call had been made.

Everyone who carries
a phone is emitting a signal

and so what we're doing is
we're looking for phones

that are giving off signals
in that area at that time,

and that's easier said than done.

Remember, you have a scene where there's

hundreds of thousands of people
making telephone calls.

You are looking for
a needle in a haystack.

Time was
very much of the essence.

We have to stop any future bombing,

because there was
a great deal of pressure.

It was trickling from
the White House back.

It was non-stop,
the pressure was enormous.

I'm at the command post
and my phone goes off

and it's my mother.
She never calls.

Hey, mom, what's going on?

She goes, "I just wanna
congratulate you.

You did a great job,
you captured him."

- Who?
- "The suspect."

I'm going to interrupt Diana
to bring John King back.

John, you're working your sources,

you're getting more information,
what else are you learning?

Wolf, we have information.

One of our sources
is a Boston law enforcement source

who tells me that an arrest has been made
in this investigation.

A dramatic shift.
We're waiting for the...

It was reported on CNN
that we had had someone under arrest,

when we clearly had not arrested
anybody at that time.

According to this official,

an arrest has been made
and it is based not on one,

but on two different video images
of the suspect at the bomb site.

There was a frenzy going on
where the media

was looking for any information
they possibly could.

There are various media reports
that an arrest has been made.

They knew that we were racing to find

those responsible
before more bombs went off.

We are just not comfortable,

based on our sources at this hour,
reporting that.

We used to talk about a 24 hour

news cycle, now it's the
ten second news cycle.

Everybody wants to be first
and it's very difficult

to verify the information
if speed is your only consideration.

...CNN is now reporting that a suspect
has been arrested,

they are expected in court,
so do stay with us.

It did frustrate us.

Inaccurate or speculative
media reporting,

especially that claiming that
we had somebody under arrest,

it requires us to provide
some kind of media response which

takes up my time, it distracts me
from the investigation.

It was detrimental to the investigation,
there's no question.

I went on the radio to all the cars

and all the officers
on the street and announced.

There's been no arrest.

Continue to do what you're doing
and watch for your safety.

We knew we still had a terrorist
out there, armed and dangerous.

John was in the ICU.

He was on a ventilator.

He had tubes
and machines all around him.

I asked the doctors,
"Just tell me he's going to make it."

I can live with anything,
and they said, "We can't do that."

We don't know yet.

The evening of Wednesday, April 17th...

Lieutenant Colonel Frank Matthews

came up to the eighth floor
of the FBI building

and he said...

I think we have an accomplice.

"I think we have another subject."

Hey, Rick. Get it up on here.

This is a security camera at the corner

of Gloucester and Boylston
at around 2:37.

They have a video with our individual

walking with the white hat,
with another individual,

a larger person,
with a similar backpack.

And they make their way along Boylston.

They were walking in stride together,

they clearly were together,
and that gentleman, you know,

had a black hat on.

LT.
And then they walk away from camera

toward the bomb site.

So at this point,
we now had two subjects,

White Hat and Black Hat.

And we were calling them
White Hat and Black Hat

from that point on.

Black Hat had put down the first bomb

and then White Hat
had put down the second.

Our biggest concern right now was that

there were multiple people out there
that could do harm.

We were afraid that, you know,
this could be a bigger cell of terrorists

that they could be operating in the city.

You know, this was one target.
What might they hit next?

There was some
debate about whether to release

the photographs
of Black Hat and White Hat.

It's a complicated call.

Well, obviously
the pros of releasing the pictures

would be someone
would recognize the terrorists.

There was a real possibility
that someone would say,

"Hey, I know that guy."

My perspective was one
of a local police chief

that's concerned with public safety,

so I was very adamantly attempting
to get the photos put out.

But some investigators would much rather
keep the photo to themselves

and attempt to run them,
run the individuals down very quietly.

It was the belief
of many executive managers

in both the FBI,
the Massachusetts State Police

and other agencies
that the release of these photos

was the last thing we wanted to do.

We believed that if we had
12 to 24 more hours,

that our phone analysis
would have yielded a result.

These individuals think
that they got away with it.

We're letting them play out their hand,

thinking that we don't know who they are.

But yet we're kind of,
we're zeroing in on them,

so if you're releasing a photo
when you're trying to determine

if it's them, do they take off?

You know, does it cause them to then act?

I got up early on Thursday.

Since Monday I hadn't run,

and usually I take two days
after a marathon,

but I needed it mentally.

So I ran about four miles that day,
got my legs moving again.

Emotionally, that was key for me.

Thursday morning we had the privilege
of when President Obama came in.

I'm here today on behalf
of the American people

with a simple message.

Every one of us
has been touched by this attack

on your beloved city.

For millions of us,
what happened on Monday is personal.

People were still in fear,

and I think it brought
a sense of security to people.

Even when it hurts,

even when our heart aches,

we summon the strength that maybe
we didn't even know we had,

and we carry on, we finish the race.

It was very important to have that

because that was
a healing service, really.

People came together
and it was to get through this together.

It was quite emotional for me
because I've run 44 marathons,

and my wife and child have stood

in those same situations
that these victims were,

but for the grace of God
that could've been,

could've been my wife and kids.

I know I took it personal,
I know our officers took it personal.

I couldn't believe that
they bombed our marathon

and they bombed our city.

That day we debated in my conference room

as to whether we display
the video evidence that we had,

or whether we continued with our
behind the scenes investigation.

There was some debate.

There were...
There were good points on both sides.

But we did not want to have
more bombs go off in Boston

or anywhere else,

and the quickest way
that we could identify these individuals

was to share that video evidence
with the American public,

so we were planning to
display it that same evening,

so about 20 after five.

Hello?

Later on that day,

our media coordinator
was contacted by a media outlet

who informed him, "We have
a photograph of White Hat."

Well, send it over. I'll take a look.

And they said, "We are going to release it
at 4:30 today."

Right, I'll get back to you.

We were furious and, at my level,

what I knew was our timeframe
to conduct our covert investigation

was limited at best.

Okay, listen up.

We know someone in this office
is leaking information to the media.

And I said, We will investigate it
and we will charge you

if we can figure out that you did it.

Hello?

I had a conversation with the producers
from that organization.

I asked them to hold off
on releasing the photos

by an hour or two.

We wanted to display those photos
on our terms and our conditions.

We wanted to be able
to describe the photos.

We didn't wanna have somebody else
describe those photos for us.

You can understand what
we're up against here.

Our concern was that
if we released these photographs,

that the individuals responsible

for the terrorist acts
could become desperate

and cause additional acts of violence.

It's frustrating because the media
was driving the investigation

and our hand was forced.

Today, we are enlisting the public's help
to identify the two suspects.

After a very detailed analysis of photo,
video and other evidence,

we are releasing photos
of these two suspects.

They are identified as
Suspect One and Suspect Two.

Suspect one is wearing a dark hat.

Suspect Two is wearing a white hat.

With the media's help, in an instant,

these images will be delivered
directly into the hands

of millions around the world.

We know the public will play
a critical role in identifying

and locating these individuals.

I'd left campus at 9:30 and, um,

as I was coming up the ramp
to Vesa Street,

over to the right was
a marked MIT cruiser,

so any time I see one of the vehicles,

I always stop or wave
or acknowledge them.

So I pulled up next to him,
rolled my passenger window down,

and it was Officer Sean Collier.

I asked him what he was doing
and he said,

"I'm just keeping the campus safe",

and I said, "Okay, just be careful."

Will do, sir.

I'll talk to you later.

And I drove away.

It was a very brief,
probably less than a minute conversation.

Investigators
decided today to ask for public help

in identifying two men
agents are now the most

interested in running down.

We consider them to be
armed and extremely dangerous.

No-one should approach them.

No-one should attempt to apprehend them
except law enforcement.

Photos of the suspects are on the website

fbi. gov.

You don't know what's going to result

from the release of those pictures.

You're hoping that the release
of those photos is going to

result in the identification
and capture of the individuals.

But the problem was the release
of these photos could cause

the subjects to essentially
become desperate

and commit more violent acts.

I seldomly answer
the phone at my house.

With two teenagers,
it's never for me.

But for some reason,
I answered the phone that night.

Hey, Jay.

And on the other end of the line
was Deputy Chief Jay Perrault

and he said to me, Chief,
Sean Collier's been shot.

So I said, "Jay, I'm heading in."

Sean Collier is a very,
very engaging young man.

He's 27 years old.

In one sense, he's wise beyond
his years, but in another sense,

he's a young kid that
wants to have a good time.

He absolutely lives life to the fullest.

I stopped at the scene.

Sean was not there,
they had taken Sean to the hospital.

Jay.

I called Jay again.

He answered the phone and he said,

"Chief, I was just gonna call you.
Sean's dead."

It was unbelievable.

Absolutely unbelievable.

This just can't be.

Breaking news from the Boston area,

that shooting at the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology.

- Andrew Griffin...
- My wife, who is very sharp

on such things, she said,
"I bet those are your subjects.

I bet releasing the video evidence
flushed them out

and they're on the run right now,
and I bet that they're the ones

that murdered that police officer."

And at the time I didn't believe her.

This is becoming
a much, much bigger story,

the scope of which
we're not quite clear on.

There's no doubt that this team

went active again after the photos,
because they felt pushed to do that.

It was impossible to foresee
that they would attack

a university police officer,

but I think he was a target
of opportunity.

I regret that Sean Collier was killed.

I wish there was something else
that we could have done,

but I'm happy that at least
those pictures were out there.

I think it was a terrible choice
we had to make,

but I can see very, very bad ramifications
if we hadn't made it.

SGT.-
I arrived into roll call at- 30 p.m.

on the 18th.

We were told that we had
a very serious incident happen

in the bordering town,
which is Cambridge.

They told us that an officer at MIT

had been shot and killed.

The hairs stick up
on the back of your neck a little bit

and you kind of prepare
yourself mentally.

Be safe. Be on the lookout.

You kind of get ready for,
you know, tonight,

something might happen.

Officer at MIT was shot several times

around 10:48 this evening.

They say a suspect is still at large.

A man knocks on the window.

I rolled down the window a little bit.

Suddenly he put his hands in,
opened the door from inside,

jumping in the car.

- Drive!
- Okay.

- Drive!
- Okay, okay. Okay, I'll drive.

I thought this just a robbery,

you know, that what I was thinking.

You know what happened
at the marathon on Monday?

Yes.

I did that.

I just drove for four or five miles,

Then he said,
"Stop here, right behind the car."

All right,
don't freak out, then I won't kill you.

He told me to get out of the car

and to sit on the passenger seat.

That's when I saw another guy.

He opened the trunk
and they moved, like,

four or five packages
from the other car to my car.

They have some conversation
in their own language.

I only heard one word, "Manhattan."

So I think they are
trying to go to New York.

Can your car go out of state?

Yes.

There's no gas.

We need to find a gas station.

We just kept driving
for three or four miles

and finally found a gas
station in Cambridge.

I already had a plan in my mind.

The gun was
in the pocket of the door.

If I didn't make it,
he will kill me right away,

But if I didn't do anything,
he would kill me later.

So I think this is my last opportunity.

This is my chance to run.

So I took a deep breath.

This was my last chance to run.
I prayed.

In my mind, I said, "One,

two,

three,

four."

I was just run as fast as I can,
I never look back.

There was another gas station
across the street.

I pray, please the store is open.

Please, call 911,
there's two men with guns,

two men with guns tried to kill me.

80-14 clear.

When I started my patrol,

it was a regular night.
Actually, a very nice night.

I was patrolling for less than 10 minutes

when the dispatcher told us
to be on the lookout

for a black Mercedes
that was taken at gunpoint.

I was on Dexter Ave
and I saw two vehicles.

I first saw a Honda Civic
and then behind the Honda Civic

was a black Mercedes SUV
that we were looking for.

And I looked in the vehicle,
I made eye contact

with the operator of that vehicle
and knew that this was

the exact vehicle
that we were looking for.

The hairs stuck up on the back
of my neck and I knew, you know,

we're gonna have something.

SGT.
As I was coming down Dexter

I could see Officer Reynolds' vehicle.

He takes a U-turn
and gets in behind the vehicle,

and I'm about a 100 yards behind him.

SGT.
And I said...

Okay, Joey, light them up.

SGT. At that point

I thought it was just
a regular carjacking.

Turned out to be very different.

He turned left onto Laurel Street,

and the vehicle started travelling slowly.

The vehicle then stopped.

And I started to get a little bit nervous,
trying to figure out what's he gonna do.

I was about to get out to confront him.

The suspect opened his driver's side door.

He jumped out,
he started walking towards me...

And I could feel my heart,
like, really start pumping.

That's the point where I got scared.

I first heard
what I thought were firecrackers

and I said to him,
"They're starting so early,

it's not even 4th of July yet."

You know, "What the hell is going on?"

I opened the window and I said,

"Get outta here."
I said, you know,

"Go to your own neighborhood."

And then I saw a police car.

I see the guy shooting with a gun

and then I realized
something's going on, you know?

As I turned onto Laurel Street,
I couldn't believe what I was seeing.

Officer Reynolds is in reverse
and he's coming back

right past me.

I see the suspect wheel over towards me
and he fires one round at me.

I couldn't believe it, I was like,

"These guys are shooting at us."
This is, you know, this is it.

I emptied my first magazine, 13 bullets,

in eight seconds.

Before this moment,
I've never had to fire my gun.

And I got on the air and I said...

Shots fired, shots fired!

So I jump up into the driver's seat
and put it in drive.

I jumped out and tried to use
the vehicle as cover.

But again, the rounds
were hitting off my cruiser.

He's gonna get me
with one of these shots.

So I made the decision. I jumped out.

Officer Reynolds sees me
and he jumps over.

I can't believe that this is happening.

I could see a second suspect

lighting what I thought
was a wick or something,

and then throwing it towards us.

It almost looked like a branch,

a big heavy branch, but when it hit,

ping, ping, ping...

...and I'm looking at it.

The house shook.

This house actually shook.

I said, We're gonna die here tonight.

It shook my eyeballs sideways.

I had to shake my head
to try to clear my head.

One-eleven, one-eleven, control.

Uh, we have reports that they have
explosives here at the scene.

There are explosives here at the scene.

Are you responding there, five four?

I stepped on the gas.

I think I travelled a mile and a quarter
in under a minute.

I turned onto Laurel Street.

I could hear gun fire
the entire time I was approaching.

And that's when
the pressure cooker bomb went off.

SGT.
The second bomb comes at us.

I get a hand on my shoulder
and it was Officer Reynolds.

He's like, Sarge, run!

I thought it would be best to

try to flank the suspects.

I started cutting through two houses

towards where the suspects were.

One of the individuals
realized I was there.

He left his position of cover,

came up the sidewalk
and was firing at me.

I thought my bullets were hitting him,

but he didn't seem to be
reacting like they were.

You know, you watch the movies.

You know, somebody gets shot,
they fly back 10 ft

and collapse, one bullet.
That's not reality.

You know, reality is people
can take bullets

and continue to fight.

I was firing back
and then I pulled the trigger

and nothing happened.

And then his gun jammed

and he looked down at the gun
in, like, disbelief

that, like, "What's wrong with my gun?"

And then he threw that gun and took off.

SGT.
He's in the dead center of the street

coming towards the police officers,

and he doesn't have a gun in his hand?

Then he probably has a device
on him or wearing it

and he's gonna wait for us to get him
and then he's gonna blow us up.

That's what I was thinking in my head.

I chased right after him

and tackled him to the ground.

He just kind of crumbled underneath me.

SGT.
I'm like, Sarge, bombs, get off him,

get off him, get off him!

He's like, No, we gotta cuff him,
we have to cuff him.

Had his right hand behind his back

just that left arm was just moving
around like crazy.

At this point, you know, we didn't know
if he had another explosive device,

a detonator switch and he could have
blown himself up or us with him.

And I heard just the roar of an engine
and I looked up and I saw the Mercedes.

Sarge, this is it.

I yelled to Sergeant Pugliese,

Sarge, disengage, get off him,
here comes the car.

I grabbed the suspect

and I was trying to drag him
out of the street.

The next thing I knew was the headlights
were right beside my head.

The suspect got hung up
on the rear wheels of the vehicle,

he got dragged about 20, 25 feet.

I got up, got on top of the suspect again,

got his right hand behind his back.

Officer Reynolds came up
and the two of us handcuffed him.

Somebody said, you know,
"Do you know who these guys are?"

and, you know, myself
and the other officers are like,

"No, just a couple of carjackers,
you know, that kind of went crazy here,"

and, "No, these are the Boston bombers."

You know, we were, like, "What?"

Officer down!
We need help!

SGT.
At that point I'm hearing Officer down.

Sarge, one of ours is down.

I grab my oxygen mask and my medic bag

and I, you know, I sprinted over
to where they were.

It was Officer Dic Donohue
from the transit police.

I could see the blood that was, you know,

pooling around us.
He was bleeding out pretty profusely.

You know, I was looking
into his eyes and telling him,

You're gonna be okay,
you're gonna be all right.

Breathe.

SGT.
It was seconds as that point, you know,

we have to get this kid to the hospital,
we have to get him there.

The gurney never even came out,
they just picked the officer up

and threw him into the back
of the ambulance.

I didn't think he was gonna live
and I thought that night

that they were lying to us
that they said he was still alive.

As I'm pulling up onto the scene,

literally the smoke is just still
wafting down the street.

Every hair on the back of your neck
went up and it's like,

what is going on?

Carjacking, shootouts, IEDs.

It felt like we were under attack.

The captured suspect had been hit

by a car and shot.

He died from his injuries.

The team went to the hospital

for the body identification
of the dead individual.

They brought what's called
our quick print capture platform.

Essentially what that does
is you can fingerprint somebody.

It immediately goes electronically
into our fingerprint database

and attempts to identify a match.

I recall the information coming back
that we had a name

and the name was,

Tamerlan Tsarnaev.

T-S-A-R-N-A-E-V.

Once you have a name,

you're going to search it
through every one

of your intelligence databases.

One of the databases yields a hit.

Born 1986,
originally a citizen of Kyrgyzstan.

Arrived in the USA 2003.

We interviewed him in 2011
about his radical Islamic sympathies,

but we found no evidence
of terrorist activity.

He was somebody
who had a prior history with the FBI.

He had been the subject
of what we call a guardian lead,

and merely it's an assessment.

Our intelligence analyst ran
Tamerlan Tsarnaev's information.

There was information
about other family members,

- I've got it.
Get it up here.

And they pulled up the DMV photo
of Tamerlan's brother.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. Born in 1993,

became a naturalized citizen
of the USA in 2012.

Pull up our photos.

That picture was compared
to the pictures we had of White Hat.

Stop.

And the facial recognition expert concluded

that this was likely the same person.

Based on our investigation,
we have identified Black Hat

as Tamerlan Tsarnaev,

and we have likely
identified White Hat as

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.

We come upon the vehicle
that White Hat had escaped in.

The door was open,

but we're not sure.

Is it booby-trapped?
Did he leave something in there?

When dealing with the subject,
anything could have been a bomb.

It's like, where is this person?

And at that point I realized, okay,

we need to come up
with an action plan here.

We made the decision to lock down
the 20 block area around the incident,

and then methodically search it
until we got him.

So a decision was made
to have people shelter in place.

They weren't to go to work,
they were to stay in their residences,

lock the door and be vigilant
of what was around them.

At that point in my mind,
there was just no doubt

what we had here.

We wanted the streets
and the airspace to ourselves.

in Watertown, Massachusetts,

One suspect dead,
the other still at large,

and the subject of a massive manhunt,

It's possible that this suspect
is not only heavily armed

It was a call from the police,
a automated call.

Hello, this is Detective Connors

with the Watertown Police Department.

There is an active incident
in Watertown right now.

Chief Deveau is advising all
Watertown east end residents

to remain in their homes.

We were in lockdown.

We got up and looked out
the front window

and the first thing that greeted us
on the street

was a SWAT team walking up
and down the street.

Oh, wow! Whoa!

Right here, in Watertown?

What are they doing?
You know, Watertown? Come on!

House to house,
shed to shed, basements.

We literally just fanned the streets
with anything we had,

every agency just literally
lining the streets.

We didn't let anyone travel anywhere.
You couldn't come and go.

Breaking news related
to the Boston Marathon bombing.

Police say that one of the two suspects

has been killed in a shootout
with law enforcement,

the second suspect remains at large
and is armed and dangerous.

They are warning the public to use...

I thought he would be happy to know
what we had just seen on the news,

so I leaned over and I said,
"John, do you want some good news?"

They got the bastard
that put you in this bed.

This is a special report from ABC News.

Police in Boston are new reporting
that one of the suspects

in the Boston Marathon bombing is at large
and considered armed and dangerous.

As dawn broke
on the morning of Friday April 19th,

Dzokhar Tsarnaev was still out there

and so it was still
a very, very stressful period.

We didn't know what he was armed with.

They had clearly made more explosives
after the bombing,

which led me to believe
they had plans to hurt more people.

This was as dangerous as it gets.

The Governor listened to all of us,
listened to what our concerns were,

and ultimately made the decision
to shut down the whole city.

That was a big decision.

We did not wanna turn into a police state,

but we did want people
to help us help them.

I'm Aaron Katerski.

Boston and surrounding communities
are locked down.

Mass transit has stopped.

People have been warned to stay indoors
while police hunt for a bomber.

Streets empty, businesses closed,

over a million people
behind locked doors and on edge

as investigators follow
every possible lead.

So you're in lockdown
and you're pacing back and forth,

and you have a little stoop out
in your back

that you wanna sneak out to,
and that was as far as I'd go.

So I'm not gonna go out in the backyard
with helicopters flying overhead.

I wouldn't think that would be
a smart thing for me to do.

Do not answer your door, do not come out,

there's just no reason for it,

because they know
there's somebody out there,

somebody who has a death wish.

That day, it was a ghost town.

Let me tell you, everyone cooperated,
even the little coffee shops.

They weren't open,
you couldn't get a cup of coffee

in the City of Boston.

People were anxious
of trying to get the end of it.

At this moment, we had a name

and identity of our fugitive,
a good photo.

Coming from there was,
where were they living?

We were talking to family members,
talking to neighbors,

looking through our databanks.

There were numerous leads
that were coming in feverishly.

All right, he's a student at Dartmouth.

Okay, he is a student at UMass Dartmouth.

Hey, Rick.

There was some technical information

that indicated he may have been.

Somewhere in North Dartmouth.

Intelligence led us to an address
in Carriage Street.

Maybe he's there.

The Director of the FBI said,
"Just hit it. Let's just do this."

We brought the FBI's Hostage Rescue Team
to participate in a search and arrest.

I went to our command post
to direct that.

Everyone was there, every agency,
whether it was federal, state, local.

We're all in on this one.

Are we gonna come up with him,
or we're not gonna come up with him?

There was a tremendous sense
of excitement and anticipation

as the FBI's Hostage Rescue Team
entered the residence.

Team one, ready to make entry.

Everything came through on the radio.

We're not watching video footage of that.

- Open door. Open door.
- Open door. Open door.

We're hearing radio communications
from the SWAT team.

They're very military in the way
that they operate,

so the communication
is very terse and short.

FBI, don't move!

FBI! Small room.

Don't move.

- Room clear.
- Room clear.

It was just tense.

There's no conversation,
you didn't need to speak.

FBI, don't move!
FBI! Small room.

- Small room.
- Room clear.

Room clear.

Hands up! Hands up!

There were
individuals inside this residence.

FBI! Don't move! FBI!

Hands up! Hands up!

You don't move.

And there was a period
of about five or ten minutes

when they were identifying
these individuals.

We have three subjects.

Checking IDs now.

FBI! Don't move!

FBI! Don't move!

We thought we might have
Dzhokhar Tsarnaev located.

There's these long, pregnant pauses.

We're hanging on this.

Your adrenaline's pumping
and your heart's beating.

You knew what
we were all thinking, you know,

this has gotta be him.

We're clear here.

The final transmission
is like, you know, "We're clear here."

He's not here.

There was a palpable sense

of disappointment in the room.

People felt crushed.

It was like, I can't believe
we don't have him,

and it really was, you know,
it was quite devastating to all of us.

It was like, wow, this is,
we're coming up dry.

They are not certain where he is,

they are confident they're going
to get him one way or the other very soon,

but as of this moment they really
do not know where he is.

I was tired,
and I lay down for a little while

on that sofa over there,
and the President called

and he said to me,
"You know, you can't keep

that shelter request in place
for very much longer, Deval,"

and I said,
"No, we'll have to take it down,

once we've finished the house to house,"

and he said,
"Well, suppose you don't find him?"

and I said, "If we don't find him,

then I'll probably have to take the heat
for asking people to stay in."

And not long thereafter,
they finished the house to house

and it was time to make the call.

Developments in the course of the day,

the stay indoors request is lifted.
The team...

We announced that the shelter
in place request was withdrawn.

There is still a very,
very dangerous individual at large.

Basically, we were back
where we were on Tuesday morning.

Every agency had people at this point

who were exhausted.

Everyone's just wiped out.

We're not giving up,
but we need to scale back

and get some rest, some food,
and then let's reset.

We don't have really any other options.

Emotions, the exhaustion
were going through my mind.

Well, what else is there?

There weren't a lot more
immediately viable options.

The lockdown was lifted,
I believe, around six o'clock.

I wasn't in any hurry to go anywhere,
except out to the boat.

That's what I wanted to do.

Now, I always think of that boat.

It's my passion.

So I went out to the garage,
got the ladder,

and it's quiet.

It's quiet, 'cause nobody had...
No cars, no nothing yet.

And I just put the ladder
nice and quiet up against the boat.

I pulled the strap on the boat
to put them back,

and it was a little loose.

Why did this main strap get loose?

Something's, something's not right,
but, it could be a lot of things.

I just started looking in the boat.

I saw blood on the deck.

I'm thinking, what the heck is going on?

And somebody was lying in the boat.

I just looked and I looked
a couple of times to...

Yeah, I'm seeing what I'm seeing, I'm...
You know.

I'm outta here.

I'm outta here.

My car happened to be right there
at that time.

All of a sudden, they came.

The only way I can explain it,
it was like a NASCAR pit stop of police.

All directions down the street,
vroom, vroom, vroom.

It was chaos.

- Some were yelling.
- Get over here!

- Some were yelling.
- Don't move!

I don't know what's going on,
but one officer came running out.

Come over here!

She grabbed me.

Come over here!

And my friend George was there
and he's, "Dave, what's going on?"

And I'm yelling at him,
"He's in the boat, George.

"He's in the boat."

Move further up.

Move further up, please team,
get on a little further, a little further.

My biggest fear at that time
was trying to control the scene.

And I said, "We have the suspect covered.

I don't need any more help.
Just bring me a tactical team."

We have the suspect
cornered in the boat.

This fella could have suicide vest,

he could have bombs,
he could have had anything.

I don't need regular officers moving in
on someone as dangerous as this guy.

Phone rings, he's there,
they've got him, 911 call.

And I just thought,
"Oh, my God, let's do this."

Holy mackerel!
Dzhokhar Tsarnaev had been located.

He was surrounded
by law enforcement personnel.

We knew that he had more bombs,
we knew he had the capacity

to kill innocent members
of the American public,

or the law enforcement officers
that were responding there.

There's definitely movement in the boat.

Guy three, I got a good copy.

Then all of a sudden
we clearly could see his hand

poking at the wrap on the boat.

So we need any police officers

that are in the rear of that garage
behind this house,

need to get out of the line of fire there.

Anybody that's on perimeter,

be aware of crossfire situations,
all right?

We didn't know whether that was a gun

he was trying to break through.

We didn't know what he had.

They asked me
if there was any gas on the boat

and I said, "Yeah, there's about
40 to 45 gallons of gas in the boat."

Then all of a sudden I heard the shots.

I didn't know if the suspect
had fired first,

I didn't know what happened,

but all of a sudden
the shots started ringing.

This is bad. There goes the boat.

Hold your fire!

And I clearly was screaming,
"Hold your fire, hold your fire!"

Arlington, Arsenal, Waverley,

Main and Belmont Street,
assume a perimeter.

The FBI's HRT team
were able to establish a hard perimeter.

State Police had a helicopter
with a great, you know,

bird's eye view of the scene.

Tactical squads are in the area
at this time.

Only tactical units only.

HRT is moving into position
to execute an assault plan.

We had an infrared camera on a helicopter

that was hovering up above
to watch for movement.

Unit three to CP, we have eyes on.

Negative movement, negative movement.

So from those infrared pictures,

we've got a good idea
of what we were dealing with.

You know, it was a very open boat.

It didn't appear to have a cabin,

so the person would have been all exposed.

All units.
If they get that top off that boat,

be aware of crossfire situations.

The decision was, we want him alive.

Let's try and negotiate,
let's talk to him.

We want him alive, we can get him alive.

They were, you know, seeking
our permission to use flash bangs.

Permission to use flash bangs.

It's a shrapnel-less grenade
and it's really loud.

There might be a flash bang.

The FBI are shooting one off.
All units, don't return fire.

No movement from the...

That was an effort to drive him out.

Zero three,
another flash bang. Negative...

We got movement, he is moving.

We have movement in the boat.
He just sat up.

Then I realized the media had tapped
into the feed through the helicopter.

The media's tapped the feed.

Not only was I watching it
on our monitor but, you know,

the world was watching this live.

We want him alive,

but if my tactical team
had to take his life,

I could not have that play out live on TV.

What do you wanna do about it?

You know,
I had the United States Attorney in there,

I had the Governor,
senior members of Boston State.

That was a unique environment
to be making these tactical decisions.

I said, "Okay, kill the feed."

Once we killed the feed,
everything came through the radio.

We weren't quite getting
a blow by blow from that point on.

Zero three, another flash bang.

Everybody's adrenaline was pumping,

you know, people were just very on edge.

It was just a, very tense,
kind of heavily laden atmosphere.

CP, it looks like he's sitting up again.

There is movement.

He's on the fence side,
center of the boat.

We have movement.
An arm's moving.

That was the first thing I heard is,
"We can see a hand."

We've got communication.

We just knew
that we had the communication,

we had a hand, you know,
it looks like he's gonna give up,

and then it was just tense,
tense, tense, tense, waiting.

I need to know right away
if there's any movement in the boat,

'cause the HRT, they're gonna cross
the danger area.

They need to know that information ASAP.

Clear the air, let's clear the air.

I want everybody to stay off
the air until this happens.

Suspect in custody.

We got him.

Whoo!

I heard, "Suspect in custody",

and I've never had
such a better feeling in my life.

Suspects in custody
but nobody inside the perimeter.

Put that out on channel one.

It just seemed like everything ran out
of my body at that time.

It went kind of silent for a minute.

They had him.
He was on the ground. You knew that.

He was out of the boat
and they, they had him.

Unbelievable, unbelievable.

Words can't describe it.
It was just, to this day, wow!

And it was just more
than anyone can handle.

Ultimately I remember the next day,

you know, talking to my wife
and I was upset.

Finally at that time to kind
of like, wow, let it all go.

It's like, wow.

How did I get here?

How did I get here in this dark room?

I did not recognize anything at all,

so I had no idea where I was.

I was hooked up to some kind of machines,

I couldn't move.

I was scared to death.

Was I dead? I don't know.

I could see the people walk by
and I had to get their attention somehow,

'cause I had to find out where I was.

And I started screaming
and finally someone heard me

and then he began to tell me
why I was there.

John had 11 surgeries in 28 days.

They wheeled him up to parallel bars

and it was really her only intent
to get him to stand.

I took five steps that day.

I took those five steps

and I knew from then on.

There was nothing gonna stop me

from walking.

I feel guilty that, you know,
I for one got so much out of that day.

I ended up with another family,
I ended up with a beautiful girlfriend,

whereas so many people lost all that.

Running helped me
get through these difficult days.

It helped me to deal
with the emotional impact.

I think it's made me realize

how it's so important, you know,
to keep going.

I think those five days

demonstrated to all of us
that we are a community

and that there is,
there is power in a crisis

in turning to each other
rather than on each other.

Somebody struck
at the heart of our great event.

They were striking
at the heart of Boston

and you also knew that

they ain't gonna win.

Not here.

Captured. The hunt is over.

A sigh of relief as police apprehended

the second Boston Marathon
bombing suspect, 19 year old...

He is alive, he is in custody.

Unbelievable, as one said
who's been following this...

I don't know that I've ever seen
anything like this...

Police and law enforcement
just cheered like this one by one

as they drive through here
with their lights flashing.

Police officers
shaking hands with each other, smiling.

Clearly it's over
and people here are very happy

that they will be able to go back
to their lives.
