Yeah, come on!

Grandma, Grandpa!
Look at all these stories I've been writing.

My goodness.
I can't wait to read them.

Good sleuthin', Detective Piper.

Actually,
it's Detective Clucky Sinclair.

[chuckles] Okay, Clucky.

[Grandpa] Whoops.

Who are these chickens?

-[gasps] Oh, my feathers.
That's us. -[Grandpa] That's us.

-It is?
-It is?

-[chuckles]
-[chuckles] Sure. Don't you recognize us?

This picture was taken
the night we first met.

Oh, what a story that was.

Story? Ooh!
You know how I feel about stories, right?

-[chuckles]
-[chuckles] Sure do!

Then I guess I'd better tell it.

Yes!
Yeah.

Well,
it all started a long time ago.

At the disco roller rink.

I was movin' and groovin'
when I heard my favorite song.

[singer] ♪ Doin' the
tail-feather strut... ♪

[Grandma] I was the best
roller skater in town,

so I went
to the middle of the rink to show off my moves.

And then I started
skating backwards,

when I saw a moose
doing a headstand!

And that's when your grandpa
comes out of nowhere and bumps into me.

He wasn't the best skater.

We ended up doing such
a fabulous skating routine that they took our picture.

[shutter clicks]

Well, nice story.
But that's not the way I remember it.

It's not?

Oh, no.
Here's my version of the story.

It did start
at the disco roller rink.

I was with friends,
when they started playing "Tail-Feather Strut."

Bah-gawk! I love this song!

[Grandpa]
I went to show off my moves,

'cause I was the best skater
in town.

I started skating backwards,
when I saw a polar bear doing a spin.

Not a moose doing a headstand.

Whoa!

[Grandpa]
Then your grandma ran into me.

She wasn't the best skater
in the world.

[clears throat] Oh, really?

I'm just sayin'.

Anyway, we did end up
doing a great routine though.

We were the
grooviest chickens on skates.

- They took our picture, and...
-[shutter clicks]

...The rest, as they say,
is history. [chuckles] Bah-gawk!

But you told
two different stories.

How can they both be right?

Yeah?

Well, I know my story is right.
I remember it clear as day.

Well, I remember
that day perfectly, and my story is 100% right.

Oh, I guess it just depends
on your point of view.

What do you mean?

That means you can tell a story
in different ways,

depending on how you see things.

Right. From my point of view,
I was the best skater in town.

And your grandma bumped into me.

And I definitely
saw a polar bear.

But from my point of view,
I was the best skater.

And your grandpa bumped into me.

And I'm sure I saw a moose.

Hmm.

Well, what if I write
my own story about how you met from another point of view?

[chuckles] Sure.
[chuckles] Yeah. Let's hear it.

Okay, here goes.
It all started at the disco roller rink.

♪ Out jumped
A little red chicken ♪

♪ With a buck-buck-buck
Bah-gawk! ♪

♪ She loved stories
More than any bird You ever saw ♪

♪ Shaking
Her little tail feathers ♪

♪ She was there
To make things better ♪

Bah-gawk! ♪

[Piper] It was Clucky Sinclair.

The world's greatest
chicken detective.

[skaters cheering]

[Piper]
Clucky tried to find out what was happening,

but she couldn't see all of it
from her point of view.

-[skater 1] Wow.
-[skater 2] I like it.

[Piper]
So she decided to investigate.

All right, folks.
Who saw what happened before that photo was taken?

I did.

What did you see?
Give it to me straight.

Well, from my point of view,

I was just skating along
doing my thing when two chickens came skating by.

I had to get out of the way.

Mm-hmm.
And did you happen to see a moose doing a headstand?

I didn't see her do a headstand,
but she's right over there.

You can ask her what she saw.

Can you tell me what you saw
before those chickens bumped into each other?

Well, from my point of view...

I saw a pair of golden skates,
then I didn't.

Then I saw them again,
then I didn't see them.

Then I saw them again--

Okay. I get the picture.
Did you see a polar bear doing a spin?

Oh. Hmm. Don't think so.

Who would have a point of view
of everything that happened?

The DJ can see the whole rink.
He'd have a great point of view.

Excuse me.
Did you see what happened with those chickens?

Bah-gawk!
[clucks]

Yep. Saw the whole thing.

They were both boogying down.
Trying to skate backwards.

[scoffs]
Trying to skate backwards. I see.

Then I changed the record

and next thing I know,
those two are getting their picture taken.

And do you remember
seeing a polar bear doing a spin?

Uh. Nope.
There weren't any polar bears here today.

What's a chicken detective
supposed to do?

Clucky got lots
of points of view,

but none explained
what really happened.

Well, is there
a way to combine all the points of view?

Let me try.

Clucky Sinclair
thought and thought.

She needed to find another clue
to explain what really happened.

A polar bear balloon!

Bah-gawk! I've got it!

[Piper] Clucky Sinclair
had solved the mystery.

And she wrote the story down
in her notebook.

Well, what did she write?

You and grandma
have different points of view that you both think are right.

So, I got more points of view
and put them together into one story.

It all started
at the disco roller rink.

Grandma and Grandpa's
favorite song started to play.

So, they skated
to the middle of the rink.

They both thought they were
the best skaters in town.

So, they tried to do some moves.

Grandma saw a moose
doing a headstand.

And Grandpa saw a polar bear
spinning around,

but it was actually a balloon.

When they both tried
to skate backwards...

Whoa!

Whoa!

-[Piper] ...they bumped
into each other. -[both exclaim]

Watch out!

Ah! Hey!

-[exclaiming]
-[skaters exclaiming]

[Piper] They skated
around together, bumping into everybody else.

Whoa, oh! Whoa! Oh!

-Oh, yeah. I remember that now.
-Oh, yeah. That's right. Whoops!

[Piper] The owner of the rink
got his camera and said...

I've never seen anything
like that before. Mind if I take your photo?

[both] Sure.

[shutter clicks]

Well, what do you know?
Both of our points of view have some truth to them.

Yeah, we were both right.

Here, Grandma and Grandpa.
This is for you.

Really?
Wow. Thanks.

the story of how we met.

This is definitely
my favorite version.

Benjamin! You came down.
You're not afraid of the basement anymore.

Uh-uh. Upstairs,
that looked like a four-headed monster,

but when I looked at it closer,
I saw it's just golf clubs.

Sounds like you changed
your point of view.

Uh-huh.

[blows]

What do you know?

-Whoa!
-[exclaims]

Did you need help
with those chairs? Change of plans.

-[disco music playing]
-Dance party!

-Oh, yeah.
-Yeah.

the best moves now? [laughs]

I guess it depends
on your point of view.

Watch this!
[grunts, exclaiming] [all chuckling]

[Piper] "Little Red
and the Little Red Chicken."

[shutter clicks]

Theodore? Time for school.

But wait,
I have to water Zinnie.

Oh, my goodness. You're right.
I can't believe I almost forgot.

[school bell rings]

Duckston. Look what I brought
for show-and-tell.

My favorite bookmark.
I put ladybug stickers all over it.

Bah-gawk. What did you bring?

Well, if I tell before I show,
it'll ruin the surprise.

It's my favorite oatmeal spoon,
but don't tell anybody.

Okay. Hey, Theodore.
What did you bring for show-and-tell today?

A photo of Zinnie.

I-- Uh. Where is it?
Oh, no. I forgot my picture of Zinnie!

Okay, everyone.
It's almost time for show-and-tell.

[students]
Yay! Whoa! Whoo-hoo! Yes!

Who's Zinnie?

The zinnia flower
I grew with my mom.

I wanted to show the picture
for show-and-tell.

Maybe I can
draw a picture instead?

[grunts]

But this purple's not right.
It's not Zinnie's purple at all.

Is this the right purple?

No.

-What about this?
-No, that's not right either.

Is it the purple on that shirt?

Or the purple on that poster?

No, no.
Zinnie is more of a purple-- purple-- purplish--

[groans]
I don't know how to explain it.

I guess I can't
do show-and-tell today.

I have an idea.

Before show-and-tell,
why don't we take a break and read a little story?

[students cheering] Yay!

-Little Red Riding Hood.
-Yay! I love that one!

was in the woods on her way to her grandmother's house.

But little did she know,
her grandmother wasn't there.

The chicken was there to warn

Little Red Riding Hood
about the wolf.

Little Red Riding Hood!

Hi. I'm Piper.
And there's a big problem.

Problem? But it's a lovely day

in such a beautiful place
full of birds and trees and friendly chickens.

Oh, what could
possibly go wrong? A lot.

You can't go
to grandmother's house. There's someone waiting for you.

Of course!
My sweet, sweet granny.

Oh! Look at this wondrous day.

The flowers
are as red as apples.

The trees
are as tall as mountains.

Yes, but--

The leaves on the ground
are as soft as cotton.

And the sun as warm
as a cozy blanket.

What?

"And the sun as warm
as a cozy blanket"?

I don't get it.
The sun and a blanket are two different things.

Yes, Duckston. That's true.

But when Little Red says
the sun is as warm as a blanket,

she's using a simile.
What's that?

A simile is a way for a writer
to compare two different things

that are similar in some way.
Here's how.

First, think of something tall,
like a tree.

Now, what else is tall?

Mountains?
Good, Piper.

If I say the trees
are as tall as mountains,

it's a way of saying
that the trees are very tall.

And if someone says the sun
is as warm as a cozy blanket,

they're using a simile
to explain how warm the sun feels?

That's right.

What's another simile
you could use to describe how warm the sun is?

Fuzzy slippers?

The sun is as warm
as fuzzy slippers.

Very creative, Duckston.

I thought so too.

[gasps] I've got it.

I know how to rewrite the story
to help Little Red Riding Hood.

The little red chicken said...

I have something important
to tell you.

You can't go
to grandmother's house

because there's someone
as bad as a--

Yes? As bad as a what?

As bad as a-- Um, uh...

Help! I'm stuck.
What else is bad?

[gasps] A nightmare!

Oh! That bunny's
as cute as a baby's elbow. Aw.

Wait! Come back!

[giggles]

[giggles]

[Piper] The little red chicken
came up with a new plan.

If I can't warn her,

then I have to get the
Big Bad Wolf out of the house before Little Red gets there.

[Piper]
She knew she had to hurry,

so the little red chicken
ran as fast as--

Hmm. What else is fast?

She ran as fast
as a rocket ship.

Whoo-hoo!

-[chewing]
-[television playing]

Oh, no. He's still there.

And he's eating
grandma's cereal.

[chuckles] I like this show.

[scoffs]
I hope he cleans that up.

[yawns, grunts]

He made a huge mess.

[gulping, grunts]

♪ La la la la la la la ♪

[Piper gasps]
Oh, no! She's almost here!

Little Red, there's someone
in your grandma's house as bad as a nightmare.

[gasps] Really?
Well, why didn't you say so? Let me see.

[snoring]

Hmm? All I see is my sweet,
sweet granny taking a nap.

There's nothing bad about that.

No, wait! It's the Big Bad Wolf!

My, my, Grandma.

Your eyes are
as big and round as... pancakes?

All the better to see you with,
my dear.

And your teeth
are as sharp as... pencils?

Oh, no.

This is as intense as a--

a-- a roller coaster!
Yep.

Okay, okay.
Let me think of what to write.

Got it!
Suddenly, there was a sound...

-[vehicle approaching]
-[Piper] ...as loud as thunder.

Grandma!

Wait.
If that's Grandma, who's this?

[door opens]

What happened to my house?
What's going on here?

I just got here,
and it was already like this.

I came over
to bring you flowers.

Oh, my dear,
I forgot to tell you.

I was on a go-kart trip
in Bolivia and left the wolf to house-sit.

But now I see
he's done a terrible job!

Okay, Wolf. I want you
out of my house at once!

[yawns]
I'm kind of comfy right now.

But I'll think it over once
I had a chance to sleep on it. [snoring]

How do we get him out of here?

We could ask my friend to help?

Oh, Elephant!

-Surprise!
-Wow.

Say hello
to the Elephant of Surprise.

So glad you made it.
We can use your help.

[yawns, snoring]

As you can see, we've got
a bit of a wolf problem.

But we could do
something surprising to get him to leave. Right, buddy?

I've got just the thing.

[Piper] And then
the Elephant of Surprise

made the room
as cold as the South Pole.

Here we go.

[air whistling]

-[grunts]
-[teeth chattering]

Hey!
It's f-f-f-f-freezing in here.

Don't you know it's rude
to keep a room so cold when you have guests?

[groaning]

I'm starting to f-f-f-f-feel
like I'm not w-welcome.

Fine!
I didn't wanna stay here anyway!

[groans]

-Yeah! Whoo-hoo!
-We did it. Goodness!

Thanks for your help, Elephant.

No problem!
I love a good surprise.

[sighs]
But what are we going to do about this mess?

Well, we could clean it up
with a vacuum cleaner as powerful as...

an elephant.

Say no more.

[sucking]

[snorts]

[trumpets]

Well, would you look at that?

Now, who wants a go-kart ride?

[Red, Piper] I do!
Me.

[Piper]
And they all go-karted happily ever after.

Piper, I loved
your new twist on the story.

-[students] Yeah. It's so good!

And now that our story is over,
it's time for show-and-tell.

Yay!

Oh, no! [sighs]
But my picture still isn't right.

If only I could think of a way
to describe Zinnie's color.

How about trying a simile?

Oh, yeah.

Okay. Um.

Zinnie is as purple as--
as grape jelly!

But there aren't any crayons
as purple as grape jelly.

Wait! Let me check
my box filled with fruit-colored markers.

Is this the right purple?

Yeah, that's it!

Now to finish

[students] Whoa! Ooh! Good job!
