and I have a story to tell.

We were so excited
starting a life.

She had a great job

She was the most beautiful
loving person I've ever
met my entire life.

We really enjoyed life
together as husband and wife.

We were headed back to Miami,

after celebrating
our honeymoon.

Remember, this was
a brand new plane.

I said, "Look, honey,
look how beautiful
this aircraft is."

And she was really impressed.

And she was really impressed.

It was gorgeous,
it had different
colored upholstery,

and a beautiful bar area
in the back.

It was, um, state of the art.

[attendant] Can I just
have you put your
tray table up.

Make sure your mile
are fastened.

I had such a good time
in New York.

It was the best.

I can't believe we're married.

where the weather right now
is a balmy 78 degrees.

the cabin for landing.

We had no idea what was
going on in the cockpit.

don't realize

how much trouble they're in.

I'm an airplane mechanic.

in the Everglades.

It was dead silence.

see his wife Lilly again.

I'm in the Everglades

just outside
of Miami, Florida.

On the eve
of its 50th anniversary,

I'm here to investigate
the infamous Eastern Air Lines
Flight 401 plane crash.

And I've assembled
a film crew to document
this journey.

On December 29th, 1972,

the L-1011 Aircraft
departed JFK
bound for Miami.

it was an unremarkable flight.

Until the crew began
it's final descent.

Just before landing,
there was an error

with the landing gear
terminal light.

The pilot, Captain Bob Loft,
was so focused on the issue,

he didn't realize he somehow
turned off autopilot.

And the plane's altitude
has slowly dropped

from 2,000 feet to 900,

causing the plane
to suddenly crash.

It was quite literally
the crash that changed
everything.

[reporter] That yellow flag
is the only one that does
not represent a body.

That is the first point
of impact.

The plane dug in here
and cartwheeled

all the way down there,
perhaps 150 yards.

[Steve] Of the 176 on board
the flight,

only 75 people survived,

and were traumatized
by more than just the crash.

Months after the accident,

locals, flight attendants,
and even the pilots

locals, flight attendants,
and even the pilots

began witnessing
the ghostly apparitions

of those souls lost
in the tragic event.

What's more, the paranormal
activity hasn't stopped.

Locals report hearing
screaming in the Everglades
at night.

Feelings of being watched,

and even full-body
apparitions.

So I can just feel what
I feel without any hindrance.

But I can definitely tell you,

A lot of lives are lost here.

There's a sadness
that's very present.

-[Cindy] I did, yeah.

I brought you to the general
vicinity of the crash site.

how awful it would be

to, obviously, be in a plane

which is where the plane hit
and finally stopped.

So, the plane came
down here, hit,

and just exploded.

Pieces came barreling over,

and just kind of hit
this levy.

It's really a strange case.

pieces of the plane.

a woman crying.

Like, screaming,

You know, there is memory
and stuff attached
to this location.

I know that. I feel, like,
hearing this woman screaming.
That is real.

-[Cindy] I do.

I do. I think she's
definitely connected.

I keep hearing there's
a motherless child,

that's left behind
because of her passing.

So sad, right?

Yeah, there's been several
reports of a woman
screaming out here.

She does haunt this land.

Because I hear it. It's loud.

Can you try to tap
into that moment of the crash?

In the cockpit, the pilots
didn't believe
the landing gear was down.

They felt it come down.

But the indicator light

so they couldn't land.

So that's why they were
making this big circle,

That little malfunction
is what brought
this plane down

and created
this entire catastrophe.

[Cindy] I know that a lot
has been told
about this story.

A lot of people know
about this in the public,

but there are some things
that really have been
left in the dark,

but there are some things

that have been concealed
or not shown truthfully.

There's a lot more
to this story
than what people think

and that's actually what
we're really here to find.

[Steve] So I think, you know,
between all the information

that you just gave me,
was psychometry.

the crash was the biggest
in US history.

traveling at 227 miles
per hour

when it hit the ground.

[Steve] As it hit,
it essentially barreled
and rolled three times,

breaking the plane as it went.

Eventually, it hit a levy
that finally made it stop.

stood on today.

[Steve] Remarkably, air boat
operators and locals
came to help

and rescued survivors
and helped lead

the official medical teams
to the disaster site.

were killed.

[Steve] Seventy five people
survived that crash.

I can't image what survivors
went through.

And I really wanna talk

for Eastern Air Lines?

I was a flight attendant.

I flew a total of 22 years
with Eastern.

-[Steve] Twenty two years.

from 1970.

Can you tell me about
that night?

To start from the beginning.

Uh, it was a trip
that was a turnaround.

It was, uh, Flight 26
northbound to Kennedy

and 401 southbound to Miami.

It was just a regular flight.
Just like another flight.

We checked in and we went
to the airplane
and we started to fly.

[plane roaring]

We did our, uh, cabin checks.

And I sat down
in my jump seat.

And all of a sudden,
I see the coast of Miami.

In other words,
we overflew Miami.

[plane roaring]

So I unfastened my belt
and went over to Patricia.

And I asked her, I said,
"Pat, you know,
why aren't we landing?"

And I asked her, I said,
"Pat, you know,
why aren't we landing?"

And she, we were good friends.

And she said, "Uh,
you're always complaining.

Go sit down.
It's probably traffic."

Just laughed and...

So I went back
and sat in my seat.

[vibration]

First there was a vibration.

-[whirring]
-[warning sirens]

The captain tried
to lift the nose
of the airplane,

when they realized
we were so low.

[plane roaring]

[plane roaring]

The light system, it blinked
from beginning of the cabin

to the back. [mimics beeping]
And it went dark.

And all of a sudden,
there was a tremendous twist.

The airplane
did a 360 degree turn

and disintegrated.

It came to pieces, totally.

Destroyed, like,
if it had been shredded.

When I came about...

-[breathing heavily] Mercy.
-...I felt like
a slow motion.

Like if I was moving
in slow motion.

And I could feel something
hot in my back.

It was blood.

-I need you to sit up, okay?
-[Mercy] Beverly found me.

-[Mercy] I'm so cold.
-[Beverly] I know.
You're in shock.

I'm gonna go help
find other passengers, okay?

She knew, you know,
there was fuel
all over the place.

She knew, you know,

But if you can hear me,
follow the sound of my voice.

[Mercy] While I was
laying down there,
she found a baby.

[Beverly] We need to keep him
warm, okay?

Beverly brings me the baby.

The baby was 11 months old.

He lost both his parents.

Beverly tried
to go help people,

but it was so dark.

So she started singing
Christmas carols.

[Mercy] It was
a fantastic idea.

♪ All is calm ♪

[Mercy] You know we could
hear the, um, helicopters.

But they couldn't land
in the area I was,

because there was
so much debris.

I realized that I was
in a levy. It was solid,

which was extremely,
um, lucky,

because a lot of people
survived the crash
but they drowned.

It was very sad to realize
that the two
other flight attendants,

Patricia and, uh, Stephanie
didn't make it...

because they were
unconscious

and their faces
were in the water.

Forty nine years later,
it's part of the pilot's
training in every airline,

because it was negligence.

They were not
paying attention.

Unfortunately, it cost them
their lives too.

The captain, he died
right on site.

Now the co-pilot, Stockhill,
bled to death.

Repo was the engineer.

He survived, uh, quite
a few days in the hospital,
but then he passed.

From the research
I've been doing so far,

I'm learning that
Eastern Air Lines did not want

its staff or employees
to talk about strange things

that were reportedly happening
on flights.

they claimed that there

and so do our pilots.

So Mercy, I see you have

This is the, to me,
is the main item.

This is my suitcase.

There were ten of these.

The only one that came back
intact, was this.

I had my little
instamatic camera
in my suitcase.

I said, "Let's"--
You know, we're all trying

to get out of the trip
on the 31st.

for the holiday.

[Mercy] So I said, "Let's take
some pictures

because this might be
our last trip together.

Everybody's biggest smiles.

This photograph.
You see that I'm joking around
with one of the girls.

Putting, like, little horns.

And the other one
is holding the other.

Those were the two girls
that died.

It's like they were marked

or chosen or something.

I don't believe
there's a coincidence.

taken of the flight crew?
-[Mercy] Definitely.

there's the little

that we have been looking at.

And the very last pictures
of the two flight attendants
that did not survive.

The way Mercy said it
was kind of chilling.

It's almost as if
they were marked.

And when you see the photo,
I can understand
where she's coming from.

Hearing all these stories
of paranormal activity,

working hand-in-hand
with her husband,

John Fuller, on the infamous
book, The Ghost of Flight 401.

wrote her own book
about her journey,

and speak in great detail

about the paranormal
experiences that people
were having after the crash.

So Elizabeth,
you were a flight attendant.

-How long were you
in aviation?
-Yes.

Seven years.

begin for you?

[Elizabeth] Northwest
and Eastern Air Lines,
in various cities,

share the same crew lounge.

And, uh, shortly after
the plane crash in 1972,

I would just start
hearing stories,

just hanging out
in the crew lounge
between flights,

with Eastern Air Lines pilots,
their flight attendants.

And they started talking
about the ghost.

And then I was on a flight.

It was in 1976.

And the girls in the galley
started talking about
the writer onboard,

who was asking all about
the ghost of
Eastern Air Lines.

And so I said, "Oh, I know
about that.

Where's he sitting?"

I came across this man
with long legs in the aisle.

And I said, "Excuse me, sir.

Are you the writer?"

And he looked up
at me and said,

"Are you the stewardess?"

So that's how John and I met.

So that's how John and I met.

Long story short,

he hired me as his
research assistant

to try to find out
whatever I could.

We talked to dozens

of totally normal people

who had these very
abnormal things happen.

just before take-off.

There was a face.

it disappeared.

Mmm-hmm, yeah,
everything's okay.

[Elizabeth] And when
she went to report it,

she was warned.

You can't report that.

[Steve] And that wasn't
the only sighting.

[screaming]

The passenger said
he was in a pilot's uniform.

And he just disappeared.

He just vanished.

Did you see?

So the question I have
right now

that I can't seem
to wrap my head around.

I mean, it makes perfect
sense why the crash site
would be haunted

but why were these
other planes

having these experiences?

[Elizabeth] The sightings
were almost exclusively on

airplanes where
the salvaged parts

were taken from
the crashed plane

[Steve] Wait a minute.

So you're saying
they took parts

from the crash site
of Flight 401

and used these parts
on different planes?

[Elizabeth] Yes.

That's exactly what
they did.

Yes, non-structural.

And put them on other planes.

That's a direct cause
of paranormal activity.

repurposed parts,

were having sightings?

Dozens and dozens.

unusual ever happens,

They were scared to death

members lived in fear

of telling their stories,

for fear that they were
gonna lose their jobs.

So the parts were
repurposed, thus causing
all this activity

to remove these parts?

We spoke to the chief mechanic

and he said, "orders
from headquarters.

They're coming out."

So, headquarters, they
removed them,
the sightings stop.

But why is the haunting
