In 1871, the Gila Bend Mountains of Arizona

became the last stronghold of the Apache Coyotero Indians.

Led by their chief, Kai-La,

they broke out of their reservation where they had been

confined after Geronimo's escape to Mexico.

Despite the presence of the United States Army

at Fort Welter, they staged savage hit and run raids.

Their arrows and tomahawks left a trail of death

across the entire territory.

Lieutenant, I don't know much about the jails in Arizona.

They got big locks on 'em there?

Yeah, big enough if you're thinking about breaking out.
