night of violence

in and around Boston.

Four different crime scenes.

five of them killed.

just don't feel safe.

What's been interesting
about this population
is that they're not mobile.

They've been
in the same communities,

the same groups,
for the last 30 to 40 years.

So the profile of a lot of them

happen to be young,
Black, unemployed,

part of a group,
looking for something.

But they have beefs
with other folks

based on the simplest
things of respect.

And they came up there

and they shot the boy

Boston's small.

75 killings a year.

to other cities,

Five hundred men die a year.

188 bodies a year.

they're not really bad people.

They're not animals

It's hard for them
to really grasp

the concept of love because

the love from

maybe a father,

you know, there mom's not
involved in their lives.

So it's hard for these
guys to express love

when all they know is the BS.

The dynamics can
change when it comes to
just one person.

who are involved in shootings.

Because the goal
of this has been

reducing murders and shootings.

I have to make sure this kid
doesn't get killed.

and turn their lives around

and make them think different?

how to revive her

or whatever, "wrong with me,
you put me in a tub,

run cold water,
put salt in my mouth
and smack me."

This is a young kid.
I'm like, "What?

What are you talking, Mama?"

But it happened,
and I had to do that.

You have history
in these streets,

and these young cats know that.

These young cats,
a lot of them respect it.

So you just couldn't
get a random dude

to come and talk
to some gang member
on the corner,

'cause they just
gonna look at him

like he got eight heads
or somethin'.

When we first put
streetworkers out there,

some of the kids thought
they were police.

Regardless of their reputations.

And we had to get over
those hurdles

til we got to a place of trust.

On that note, it's good.
Let's work on these other guys
who needs help.

The number one tool for
dealing with younger gentleman

that feels that their
lives are wasted,

or being wasted,
or lost, is tolerance.

it would feel like normal,

it wasn't like
everybody got a father,
I'm not the only one.

Nobody really had a pops.

Probably like two of us,
two people out of 30 had a pops.

They kinda was strict.

really around that.

Then one of the other
kids started laughing

and was like, "I told you

And then he said, "Well,

that moved me.

For him to say it to me,
say it to them about me,

it was just a big deal.

Ain't none of these guys
are committing violence for fun.

Like, yeah, don't get me wrong,

it might be fun
shooting somebody.

But they're doing it
simply for a reason.

Because it was done to them,

or maybe they have to do it

because they're
put in a situation

where they gotta
stick up for themself

and they grew up
hard in the streets.

And certain things led to them
in their life to be angry.

Parents ain't
around for guidance.

There's nobody talkin' to them.

There's no, really,
positive role model.

There's positive role models,
definitely.

But it just can't be one person

talkin' to a hundred people

that's in a negative
state of mind.

My role as a program coordinator

is to connect young people
to programs and services

that will immediately
facilitate their needs.

Joe Sierra was a young man

that was referred to me
through a street worker.

He came to my office and he was,

for lack of a better word,

very rugged at the time.

And I knew that he
could really benefit

from being a part
of the program.

[Joe] One day I got outta jail,

I came to my neighborhood
and I seen a streetworker

with a streetworker thing,
jacket,

and I was like what is this?

My friends was telling me that
there are people

around here that is
trying to help us, uh,

get our ID, get our license,

just help us with little things

that we need help with.

And so I was like,
"I need help with my ID."

Our relationship
started out with me

taking him to get his IDs

and I didn't think it was
that big of a deal at first,

because to me,

I just felt like
I was doing my job.

But to him it felt
like so much more.

And once he spoke
to me about it,

I realized that it was
really deep for him.

That getting an ID
for the first time

was validating his existence.

The ID meant a lot to me.

The ID opened doors for me
to do other things in life,
so...

You can't do nothin'
without an ID

at the age of 21.

So... You know?

-I didn't go to any.

When it comes to the safety
of the young men

that I'm working with,
I rely on the information

from the guys that are
on the battlefield,

which are the streetworkers.

If I'm taking some guys to
BCL, Boston Career Links,

I need to check with
my streetworkers.

"Hey, listen, I'm taking
a group of guys down.

Is that area gonna
be okay today?"

Because it can change
at a second's notice.

The streetworkers
have information

that the police will never have.

They have information
that no one

in the community will ever have.

Because they're dealing
with these young men

on a day-to-day basis,
developing the bond.

Me and Joe go back to the time

he was 12 years old.

You know, Joe,
he was an angry kid.

[Joe] I got expelled from
all Boston public schools

after sixth grade.

And from, there it was
like no public school

wanted to accept me.

And then I was going
in and out of DYS,

so I was going to school in DYS.

I was working at the
Department of Youth Services.

And, um...

I seen how they was
treatin' the kids unfairly.

I got committed to DYS
at the age of 13 to 18.

I did a year, got out 30 days.

Went back in there a year,
got out 30 days.

Went back in there
three months, got out.

Went back in there
six months, got out.

[Napoleon] I said, "Joe, why you
do the things you do?"

He's like,
"Man, Nap, I'm angry."

[Joe] I survived them
streets by simply

just running with my friends,
you know?

Having a crew with
my neighborhood.

I learned how to sell drugs,
market it,

flip, make my money,
save my money.

And that's how I kept
clothes on my back,

that's how I kept
money on the side.

That's all I knew.

On my days off,

um, Joe would wild out

when I wasn't at work.

And they used to have to
call me in.

Psh. Man.

It was just sad, man.

Fightin' everyday, fightin'.

Um, segregation.

I spent almost a year
and a half of segregation.

Um, segregation
is jail within jail.

You're 23 hours in the cell,
one hour out a day.

It's all hell.
The COs is disrespectful.

Every time I come in
the CO was like,

"Oh, you're back!"

[Napoleon]
Joe was special to me, man.

And you know,
once I won Joe's respect,

I won everybody's respect.

He said, "Nap, dude,
you ever been in a gang?"

And I said... I didn't
wanna answer the question,

but, you know, I was
keeping it real with him

because I seen
I had his attention.

I said, "Yeah, Joe,
I was in a gang, man.

I started in a gang
when I was nine years old.

It was about ten of my cousins.

And they said,
'You're gon' be a part of this.

You gotta get a tattoo.'"

So we went down into one
of my cousin's basement,

and we got tattoos.

Um, we drank some liquor
called Martell.

And then my cousin
put us in the car

and said, "Yo, we gotta ride."

And, um...

I shot my first individual

when I was nine years old, man.

[Dequan] Sometimes you gotta
sell weed or, you know,
other stuff.

Late-night stuff, you know?

In the cold, morning time.

We havin' drama with people.

You know.

Lotta guns and stuff.

Goin' to war with each other
and all that.

At the same time,
you gotta worry

about losing your life.

Then you gotta worry
about the police coming,

goin' to jail.

I've been at Nash and South Bay.

For my shootin' I was in Nash,

then for my gun
I was in South Bay.

Gotta follow COs.

They tell you when to come out,

tell you when to eat.

All type of stuff.

-It's mad dumb stuff.

I talk to my little brothers.

But I be tellin' them,
"You don't wanna be like me.

You don't wanna be
in my predicament."

'Cause three of 'em,
two little ones,

one big one,
I be tellin' the big one,

"Help out Mama.

Take out the trash for her,
help her out."

Their pops is not there.

I'm like their pops/brother.

I'm showin' them, you know,

the right things
to do and stuff.

When I was 17 years old,
I caught a charge,

a drug charge.

That was my first adult case,
and...

the adult system,
I probably did almost,

I'd say almost about
six years all together.

The feds give you 18 months
for every charge

you've been convicted
of on your record.

I've been convicted of 12.

So what's that telling you?

Uh, I'm not-- Psh.

Okay, I can't even do those
type of numbers in my head.

I don't even wanna do those
type of numbers in my head.

I don't even wanna
think about it.

Like, police don't give
a fuck out here.

They don't care about you.
Don't tryna make it seem like,

Oh, police is Boston, police,
you got Boston's finest now.

I get pulled over,

When you goin' back to jail?
When you gettin' killed?"

That's the first
thing they sayin':

"What you doin'?"

I go in the white neighborhood,

I get pulled over in
a white neighborhood,

first thing that comes out
their mouth is, "Nigga".

I got out from doin'
a year and a half.

Two days later,
I committed a crime.

Two days later, I committed
a crime.

It was an armed robbery.

And I went to jail
and I did another year.

And when I went back in
in the three [mumbles],

the COs came
with my property bag

from my last jail sentence.

They came with the property bag

doing a year and a half,

and they came
and brought it to me

like, "Look, you ain't
even last a month.

We still got your jail..."

I didn't even have
to order nothin'.

My shoes was there,
my boxers there,

my soap, everything was there

from the last bid I did.

I think about that to this day,

like, that is sad, man.

I look at the system
as modern-day slavery.

It's like, you know?

They lock us up,
you know what I'm sayin'?

They make thousands of,
thousand dollars a year

per each man that fills the bed.

And then they send us back into
the community on bracelets.

Because you gotta think,

you on a bracelet,
now somebody could know

when you gotta come home.

You have a GPS monitor,
you have a bracelet on.

A curfew.

So if I know that you're
on a bracelet,

I could just be at your house
at seven o'clock

because you have to be home.

So I'll be there at 6:00.

I'll make myself a sandwich,
and I'ma get in your bushes.

And I know you comin'
through that door

because you'll be locked up
if you ain't there by 7:00.

So when they created
this great device,

they didn't factor that.
They don't care about that.

did I think about getting
caught?

No. Not til I was in the
motherfuckin' holding cell.

I'm not gonna

So I though I was, you know,
a big-shot guy, man.

From 1995 to 2003,

I've been from DYS
to the big-girl jail, and...

The last time
I had to do a bid,
almost two years,

was like 18 months.

My son said,
"I'm not comin' to see you
no more."

And I was like, well, you know,
"Why?"

I kinda understood because
it's jail, you know,

I'm thinkin' maybe
it's scary to him
and stuff like that.

And he's just like,
"I can't come back and see you."

So I'm like,
"Why you can't come back?

Why you don't wanna
come back and see me?"

He said, "Because you
can't get on the elevator

and leave with me."

[voice breaking] You know,
that bothered me a lot.

I'm like, "You know what,
I gotta get outta here

and stay focused on my kid."

You know what I'm sayin'?

I can't keep comin'
back in here.

[Dequan] My mom's strong.

She's one of the strongest
womans I know.

Been through a lot, struggle,

but still holdin' on.

Um, I used to go up
to South Bay to see her

with my grandfather.

Always, I didn't wanna leave,

I wanted her
to come home with me,

but she couldn't.

Then she came home,
got in contact with me.

Then from there,
we built and got strong.

Once I got custody of him,
it felt good.

Because I had other kids too

and we was all under one roof,

and I felt like a queen.

Because I'm the only girl
and it's four boys.

So they stress me out,
all four of 'em.

Dequan still stress me out too.

But I love 'em. They're mine.

I got 4 C-sections.
Those are my kids.

I don't want the day
to go by without knowing

why he didn't show up.

My entire life has been about

improving the conditions
for families

living in Boston.

In 1993, July 2nd, 1993,

I lost my 19-year-old brother
to gang violence.

And, um...

Yeah, so I do this as a way
to sort of pay him homage.

My father died
when I was five years old.

He was 24.

I'm about to be 24 and
my son is five years old.

So that's kinda hairy, you know?

My son is the same age
as I was when my father died.

I just hope history
doesn't repeats itself.

[bird squawks]

-[Robert]   When you start
to think about

the climate of the city
during the late '80s
and the '90s,

you know, in 1989, we had,
I think, 152 people murdered

in the city of Boston.

Shootings were up.

The epidemic of crack cocaine

was just so prevalent
through our communities.

And at that time,
folks were fighting

around turf
and fighting around drugs.

[Conan] This city has a history
of doing street work.

During the earlier times,

they had this thing
called a Boston Miracle.

And the Boston Miracle was that,

I think it was a year
to 18 months

where there wasn't
a death that happened.

And a lot of people
was high-fivin' and, you know...

[stammers] It was a great thing
for our community nonetheless.

However, it wasn't just about
people doin' street work

or reverends talkin' to
people on the street.

It had more of a reality

of it was a mass incarceration.

It was different police agencies

that collaborated together.

That knew who
the impact people were.

That knew who the folks were
that was involved

in the violence
and the drug transactions

in the city.

And they collaborated

and made a mass incarceration.

-[clattering]
-[officer] Let's go, let's go!

[Conan] They locked up
a lot of people.

And from that,
there wasn't no violence

that happened as a result.

But the reality
that we see today,

is some of the results
that come from that.

And what I mean by that is this:

because they didn't
service the community,

because it was an after effect

of servicing
and being deliberate

and focused on the services

as it was on the arrests.

This one area that had one gang

now has twelve.

The city who probably
once had 50 gangs,

or 40 gangs, or 30

now has 128.

[hip-hop beat]

[man] Give you five seconds,

[Joe] I got outta jail, so I had
a trust pass in my neighborhood.

So I was like, "You know what,

I'm just gonna work out
and I'm gonna be all in--"

[stammers] I was selling drugs.

I was working out
and selling drugs.

After I was working out
at the YMCA,

from StreetSafe giving me
the YMCA passes,

I was so tired that
when people called me,

like clientele
called me for drugs,

I was so tired that I was like,

"Man, I don't feel like
goin' down there to sell.

I don't feel like going down
to give them drugs."

I went home to sleep.

And that kept me out of trouble.

[Omaira]
You know, I really thought

that he had a gift to
share with the world

and that's a sentiment
that not only I share,

but Jon of Inner-City
Weightlifting shares as well.

You know, he really thinks
that all young people

have a talent as well.

[Jon] I think one of the things
that makes our program
somewhat unique

along with organizations
like StreetSafe,

is that we don't
necessarily assume

we know what's best
for our students.

Their lives are so complex

and they're up against barriers

that, fortunately,
very few of us

will ever see ourselves
or fully understand.

So what we do is we empower them

to try to make
positive decisions

and find those
positive solutions

around the significant
challenges they face.

[Joe] I got introduced
to Jon a week later.

He seemed like a cool dude.

He's pretty small.

I was like, "Man, I don't know.

I don't know about this dude."

He said he could come
pick me up tomorrow.

When he came,
picked me up tomorrow,

every day, he came and got me.
We worked out.

From workin' out, you know,

he laughed with me,
talked to me,

showed me love,
brought me out to eat.

-[Jon] As you start working out
with someone,

you're not seeing
each other based on

this person's from this area
or that person's from that area,

this person's made some
decision in their past

that was a bad decision.

You see them as
the people they are.

So as a time, goin' with Jon,

I started changing
and, you know,

they all taught me that

just because I got
a street background,

I got felonies, and tattoos,

that doesn't mean
I can't make it.

That that stuff shouldn't
hold me back.

As I went to get my GED,

Jon came back and said
he was gonna hire me

for assistant manager.

So I was like,
"Ah, it's beautiful."

It's the best job ever,
you know?

There's nothing better
than having a job

and loving what you do,
you know?

I been out of jail
for two years now.

This is the longest time
I ever been outta jail.

I never been out more than
a month and a half.

[Omaira] When I was a kid,
when I was about two,
almost three years old,

my father, who was a petty
drug dealer at the time,

um, he was robbed and murdered.

And shortly after that,

my mother had
a really challenging time

raising my older sister and I.

And for much of
our formative years, um,

and well into my teenage years,

and even into my adult years,

my mother's been a drug addict.

And so I know personally
what it's like

to grow up without a father.

I know personally
what it's like to grow up

without a mother.

[voice breaking] And so...
[clears throat]

S-- You know, I had
to really dig deep

to decide what kind of life
I wanted for myself.

And, um, I knew it would be
a challenge,

but I really wanted to
rise to that occasion.

I really wanted
to see how I could,

you know,
make a way out of nowhere.

I wanted him to know that

although he felt, at the time,

that he was a product
of his environment,

that you don't have to be a
product of your environment.

There's strength
and there's pride

in, you know, making
decisions for yourself

and deciding that you wanna live

in a better way.

that are supposed to be rivals.

After getting together they say,
"We are not really enemies."
You know? And, uh...

Then they start
making songs together.

Which is, to me, it's amazing.

I would change my whole life
to rewrite my whole life.

if we provide them
with the pathway

and the tools to
allow them to do that.

to put down the gun,

then you ask the young man
to stop selling drugs,

then you ask the young man
to stop his gang activity,

what do you replace it with?
Has to be something.

They want me full-time
but I don't wanna do it.

You don't wanna
go full-time yet.

It's no difference,
it's the same thing.

hustling, you can take
that same skill set

and turn that into
an entrepreneurship

that's legal.

We didn't wake up like,
"Oh, we wanna be gangbangers."

We grew up playin'
football, basketball...

It's people who coulda
been somewhere right now.

But the streets

But there's one dude,
known to society

as a drug dealer,
scum of the earth,

but he just gave a kid,
on a 90-degree weather hot day,

he just fed the whole block
ice cream.

And that's the guy I want to be.

They're not growing up
around people

that's gettin' master's.

four people in my life
that got a master's degree.

I didn't even know
what that was.

I was like, "A master's?
Don't know what a master's is."

My grandmother wanted better.

I'm sure everybody's
parents and grandparents

all here wanted better
for their child.

If I could rewind time
and do other things,

I would have.

getting shot, messed me up.

Slowed me down.

It always hurts
when somebody you close to

or just anybody that you know
get killed.

An extraordinary young man
who was moving his life along.

Graduated high school,
was working,

got a promotion,
was looking to go to college,

never missed practice.

my man got shot

And he's never gonna
come home, man.

see him again.

and that kinda

as I was the day before
when he was alive.

I didn't wanna do

who have served

three tours in Afghanistan.

Right? And they never have
seen someone get killed.

But at the same time,
just the pressure alone,

they may come back home
with PTSD,

post-traumatic stress syndrome.

young men,

who may be 22 or 23 years old,

and he's seen 17
of his friends murdered.

But he's seen it right there.
Been in the midst of it.

He has a possibility of having
post-traumatic stress syndrome.

[Thea] When you live in that
kind of an environment,

you sort of begin
to develop ways
to cope with that.

And apparently, a young
person's consciousness

does not really
develop until their
mid to late-twenties.

So what you create in yourself

and develop in yourself
to survive

and cope with these things
is things like hyper-vigilance,

anxiousness, you switch
from thriving to surviving.

People lose empathy,
you can lose empathy
for other people.

You know, you're sort
of anxious in the way

you respond to people,
maybe in a way

to help protect yourself.

I found myself walking
through Warren Gardens

with a hoodie on,
big-ass machete,

'cause I wanna find this boy.

I was high.

And all these boys
that's out there,

that I grew up with,

And my mind is somewhere else.

'Cause I have split
personalities.

And I said,
"Don't talk to me right now."

"What are you doin' up here?"

I'm like, "Niggas, I'm lurkin'."

I'm looking and if I see
somethin' fishy or funny,

somebody's gonna get cut."

You know, but one of my girls

that grew up in Warren Gardens,

she know the situation
so she's like,

outta the cut, she just
ended up walking up and...

young people were,

over recent years,

I would look at their tattoos.

And their tattoos would,
you know, cause me to pause.

they would say things like,

"Born to be hated.

Dying to be loved."

"Life is hard, dying is easy."

Or "Death is nothing.

But to live defeated
is to die every day."

And I mean these...
I remember them because

they're burned
in my consciousness.

And to add to that,
the young people

who were siblings
or other family members

who would come to visit them,

these young people talk about
what they want their
shrines to look like.

I mean, they're nine
and 10 years old.

So in their mind, this is
a normal trajectory of life.

in the summertime,

they witnessed my son's friend

getting shot in their face.

You know, like, on the street.

Maybe 10 feet away from us.

Seeing his friend get shot,

laid on the stretcher,
bloody and everything.

My kids was scared.

You know? And...

Every Fourth of July,
my five-year-old, DaRon,

I gotta turn TVs up,
I gotta play music,

'cause when the firecrackers
go off,

he starts crying and gets scared

and the first thing
he says to me

is, "Those are gunshots.

They're coming
to kill my brother."

I mean, they're kids.

They're kids.
The two little ones, you know,

they really don't
know all the way, but...

The big one, David, he knows.

He was there.

It's time to go take these boys
to get their hair cut.
