The first approach that we have to defining effective leaders is called the traits approach.

It was one of the first ways that early psychologists and leadership researchers began to understand

and categorize leadership.

According to this approach, leaders are born, not made.

Many people would argue with a statement, including me.

But there are some people who naturally have these traits.

So leadership really does come naturally to them.

You might say they were born leaders.

These traits, just to name a few, are intelligence, the ability to learn and apply knowledge and

skills that have an impact to the business.

Initiative, the ability to assess and initiate things independently.

Self-confidence, trust in one's abilities, qualities and judgment.

Maturity, the ability to respond to the environment in an appropriate manner.

People skills, the ability to effectively communicate, understand and empathize.

Organizational capability, the ability to assess the collective skills, expertise and alignment of

the people in your company.

As you look at these, I'm sure you can clearly see why these traits are important for leaders to have

the question with this approach is, can you gain these traits if you work on it?
