ANDY: Yeah, we're
gonna go downriver
and go get some logs.

You wanna go? Yup.

Boat ride, you
like boat rides.

I discovered
a place downriver,

where there's a bunch
of trees down from a landslide.

And I need about 18 or
20-foot poles for the elevator
derrick that I'm building.

I've got a big
project ahead of me,

working on building what
I'm gonna call an elevator.

And the main purpose
of this is to try and
get a wood stove to the

second story of
my artist-in-residence yurt.

I've got to get some way to
get this big heavy stove up
to the level of the yurt.

So, it occurred to me
that I might as well make
something that's permanent,

that I can use for wood,
water, and other heavy items.

Getting this entire
project together is
gonna take some time.

A lot of physical work.

A lot of different
kinds of challenges.

And, um, a lot of
potential for danger.

(theme music plays)

I'm gonna go do a reconnaissance
of the, uh, of all
the wood on the shoreline here.

And I wanna try and get some
logs that are relatively
close to the shores.

I'd love to be able to get
right into there, if I can.

I just don't know.

I remember there are a lot
of stumps back in here.

Oh, that's perfect. Beautiful.

Lot of good trees right here.
Lots and lots of good trees.

All these trees I'm going
after were the trees that were
up on the side of the hill.

They came down,
they got uprooted.

The land provides
for you out here.

You just got to go get
it when you need it.

And it's the go getting
it when you need it
that's the hard work.

Okay, let's find
some more, Tope.

This is a pretty heavy log,
but if I could shoot this log
out over here, I might be able

to corral it with the boat,
save me a lot of work.

I think that's
gonna work, though.

Come on, Tope.

This was just such a
sweet spot to come to.

The amount of time that
I would have had to take to
find trees out in the woods,

winch them to the shore,
drag them out into the river.

I'm way ahead.

You know, I come here,
and I can get this job
done in a few hours,

as opposed to a full day.

Let's see if we can get
this beast in the water.

A little stump or
something under there.

(bleep). Son of a bitch.

This landslide basically
created a tremendous eddy,
there's a lot of stumps,

a lot of debris
under the water.

It's a little
bit of a problem.

Dammit.

Anytime I'm working along the
Yukon River, in fast currents,
I'm always extremely nervous.

The one thing I do not wanna
do is fall in the water.

One mistake out here
and it's all over.

Alright. So that's four.

That's really all I need.

Let's see if we can
tow this upriver, huh?

Woohoo! There's
some force on there.

I'm trying to utilize some
of these trees for a project
to build an elevator.

I think the most important
thing to me out here is that
this place provides me with

all the raw materials I need
to live pretty comfortably.

It's just a
function of getting out there,
recognizing the raw materials,

going and getting them.

And then, putting them to use.

And I think I'll,
uh, get my tractor
and see if I can't get

this thing drag
out of the river.

And then get going
on building the tower.

Got to build a tower.

CHIP: The main goal of
a subsistence hunter
is to get food to eat.

It's not about a
trophy, it's about food.

AGNES: We're gonna
have a long day.

We're gonna go all the
way down to the ocean.

TINMIAQ: Maybe there's
some seals at the mouth.

They should be chasing the
fish up the river by now, eh?

-Yeah. There's got
to be seals or ducks,
or something down there.

-If there's any animals
out there, we'll get them.

-I might be working
around the house.

I got a lot back here to do.

-It's a perfect time to be
out here in the water, ah?

-Yeah.

I brought a Mosin, in case we
see a caribou on land and all.

I also got my harpoon, in
case we see seals, and we
could, like, harpoon it.

Pretty much ready
for anything.

-Right on.

-We have many miles to travel,
and this is one of those
days to where we're out here,

willingly, to catch anything
that comes across our path.

It's just, uh, full of life
out here, once you get away
from the village and there's

not much people,
then everything is crossing the
rivers, swimming here and there.

If you just mosey along
like this, and usually,
you see something.

-Carol, you ready to
harpoon, since I'm driving?

And mom shooting?

-If we come across any
animals or, uh, see animals,
hopefully, I'll be able to

take a few shots at them.

We're almost to the ocean.

Hopefully, there'll be a seal
or two over here because look
at all those waves out there.

Maybe they'll come here
to rest a little bit.

-I'm gonna park and keep
quiet, see what pops up.

-Yeah. This is a
pretty good place to be.

There's usually
seals and stuff here.

Nothing really
along the shoreline.

Not even birds.

I'm try and get down and
go see what's up here.

We can glass around, see
if there's any animals in
the country back there.

-You gonna go climb
on the beacon, Carol,
and look around?

-Careful if you
climb that, okay?

You can look all
around from up there.

We were hoping
to catch some seals or
probably some caribou.

Probably even a couple
ducks, you know.

Usually this time of
the year, we get something
a little fresh, you know,

some fresh meat.

You could see all
over from up there?

-Yup.

-Now all we got to do
is sit here and wait
for a little bit.

GLENN: It's just a matter
of the terrain in your mind.

It's not a map.
A map's not the country.

I go by the actual terrain.

It's right underneath my feet.

Nice little duck pond here.

What a great summer it's been.

Just out, exploring, seeing
new things every day.

Pretty soon, it's gonna be
cooling off, it's starting
to get dark at night.

Summer's gonna come to
an end before I know it.

I think it's time to
head back to my camp.

is in Through Creek Pass,
exploring the region to gain

knowledge of its terrain
and opportunities.

But with fall only weeks away,
it's now time for Glenn to
begin the 20-mile journey home

and prepare for the
upcoming hunting season.

GLENN: I don't wanna just
backtrack and take the same
route that got me over here.

I wanna make a loop.

Leave one way,
come back another.

Explore more territory
on the way home.

The next few miles here,
it's all new territory.

Then I'll come to a river.

I should be able to
follow that a good
bit of the way home.

It's not that much further.

I just got to get down through
this valley right here.

There's a sheep. Wow.

I'm not hunting sheep now.

But it'll be interesting
to see how close
I can get to that sheep.

They're very wary animals.

Sheep have to be careful.

There are a lot of
predators out here.

So, sheep are always alert,
and when they sense danger,
they head for the cliffs.

That was cool.

Oh, wow.
Fast-moving creek down here.

This should flow right into
the river that I wanna get to.

Once I get to that river,
I brought a little tiny,
inflatable raft with me.

I should be able to float
several miles on my way home.

What a cool creek.

It's dropping right
down into a canyon.

Wow. I love exploring
places like this.

Uh-oh. I
got to get across.

I can't get past this cliff.

Hmm.

It's not good.

The water's going so fast,
if I fell in there, I could
get pulled right under.

Probably get across down here.

Whoa. That
water's going fast.

I've got to get up out
of the canyon because
it's just too narrow

for me to keep
going down the canyon.

I'll have to backtrack
a little, climb
up out of the canyon,

and then follow
along the top edge.

So, I'm making a little
detour around, then hopefully,
I can get back on the creek,

where there's enough water and
where it's wide enough that
I can float in my raft.

My goal is to get back home.

And to get back home, the
first thing I got to do
is get around this canyon.

JESSIE: Anything that
can happen, will happen.

And I'm just gonna be
prepared for anything.

(barking)

I'm getting ready to head out,
and, uh, I'm just gonna be
heading up north of here,

for overnight camping trip.

I bring my .30-06 here.
That's for protection.

Bring my .22 rifle,

because there's
a lot of small game that
a guy can hunt right now,

and I can just have
the enjoyment of living off
the land while I'm out there,

and hopefully, catching
something to eat.

really good time today.

I just, uh, hook into
this trail and start
heading upriver.

The point of going
out here is to kind of
just hunt what's around me,

use what's around me.

Be nice to go out
there and just spend
a little bit of time.

something off the land.

Well, there's plenty to
sustain a guy out there,
if luck's on your side.

I've been hiking along up
here, and I'm getting into
this nice, high up area.

I'm gonna start looking
for a place to set up
my camp for the evening.

Starting to look
like a good area.

I'm seeing some dry firewood.

Nice view up here.

Once I get this heavy pack
dropped, and get my camp set
up, I'm gonna continue on down

the hillside here, and along
the river, and, uh, see
what I can find for dinner.

Just need a couple trees
to string up my, uh,
sleeping bag in front of.

Oh. That's a pretty
big, large-sized bear
full of cranberries.

It, that looks pretty fresh.

Definitely a lot of bear
around here, I've been
seeing tons of bear scat.

But, uh, at least
I got my .30-06 with me.

That's why I didn't just bring
my, uh, hunting gun, here.

I definitely like this area,
I like my view, so I'm gonna
stick within this area here.

Gonna set myself up a nice,
little spot to base out
of here, for the evening

and tomorrow, and then
I'm gonna go out, and
do some hunting, so.

Looking to hopefully
find some grouse.

It's, uh, grouse
season started.

I can get up to 15 grouse,
though, right now, and this
is good time of year to be

looking for grouse,
so I'm pretty confident
that I'm gonna

run into some grouse,
here, later on.

Hell, anything.

Squirrel, porcupine,
whatever I come across.

Got myself a nice
camp set up here.

Excellent view.
No bugs, no rain.

Just need to go out and find
myself something good to eat.

It's the only thing
camp's missing.

Just good eating.

But I'm out here in some
good country, and I'm sure
I'm gonna find something.

I hear some grouse thundering
their wings back in
there, I just heard one fly.

This might be a good spot
to pick up some grouse.

I think I hear
them back there.

Grouse are really good
eating this time of year,
they're full of cranberries.

Really sweet meat, I'd love to
get myself a few for dinner.

Oh, there's a

stuck up there.

I got to go make sure I get
all of them that I shot, while
I remember where they're at.

Put this one on
the main trail.

I got to remember.

Dang it. There it is.

Quite a lot of excitement, but
you got to be ready to seize
every opportunity out here,

so, may as well get myself
plenty of dinner for while
I'm out here hunting.

I'm looking for my other
grouse that I shot.

There it is. Okay.

That's number three,
and I know I shot one up
in this tree over here.

They're a small bird,
but this can feed me for
my whole time out here.

It's a land of
resources out here, you
may as well use them,

and grouse is good
eating, they're full of
cranberries right now.

I just got to
find my other one.

Which tree did I
shoot that grouse up in?

Must've been this tree.

I got to account
for this grouse.

I just kind of
saw a lot of grouse,

and I just went after
them to get as many as I could.

It's like an Easter egg
hunt, but up in a tree.

They're really hard to
see in these spruce trees.

Where is that grouse?

Problem with the spruce
grouse is they're designed
to blend into a spruce tree.

That's got to be it,
that dark spot up there.

Looks like it's
definitely dead.

Damn, now I got to
climb up that tree.

I mean, unless, I
can try to knock it out.

Not gonna let it
sit up there and go to
waste, that's for sure.

Yes. Nothing to complain
about right there.

Nature's bounty.
Four spruce hens.

This will make some fine
food for while I'm out here.

Pretty happy with that.

Opportunity arises,
you take it, I'm just
happy to be out here,

doing the kind
of things I love doing.

Hunting and fishing,
that's when the action
starts happening.

GLENN: You don't
have any trails.

You don't have any signs
telling you where to go and
how far it is to get there.

Out here, you just have
to rely on your intuition.

And your knowledge
of the land.

What a gorgeous time of
the year to be walking
out in these mountains.

There are hardly any bugs.
Temperature's just right.

When the sun comes out
like today, it just doesn't
get any better than this.

Big country out here.

There are no boundaries.
There are no borders.

It doesn't get any
freer than this.

There it is.
The river.

The creek flows
in right here.

This rivers got a
lot of water in it.

I'll be able
to travel on it.

I'll put my raft
in right here.

This current's
gonna carry me right down
towards where my cabin is.

This raft is a whole
new thing for me.

I've used a canoe quite a bit.

But I've never used
a little inflatable
raft like this before.

And if it works out, it's
gonna be something I'll use a
lot in the future because it's

small enough and
light enough, I can carry
it right in my backpack,

anywhere I'm hiking
around these mountains.

And then if I hit a
river I wanna travel,
blow it up, jump in.

If this thing works out,
think of the possibilities.

Anywhere I can hike,
I can carry this raft.

And anywhere there's water,
I can travel with it.

I hope this thing's big
enough for me and my pack.

Hey, it fits!
I got everything.

I got my pack,
I got my boots.

I got my raft.
I'm traveling.

is, we're gonna be out here,

because we love
to be out in the country,
and out in the wild.

You just have to know what
you're doing out there, if
you wanna come back safe.

See anything from

-No seals and stuff?
-No.

-No sign.

So, we came out
here to the ocean, right
where the river meets the sea.

And we sat a couple
hours, hoping a seal would
pop out of the water,

or a caribou would come
running from the tundra.

But we didn't see no seals,
we didn't see no caribou,
we didn't see no birds.

I guess we're
about done here.

-No sign of anything
from up there, Carolyn?

-No, I, I didn't see
anything up there.

Not even birds.

-Yeah, there's nothing
in the river either.

-We could pick berries
as we go back home.

-Yeah. Well,
better luck next time.

berries, so we don't go
home without anything?

-Yeah, I don't really
like to go home without
anything either.

Not every hunt or not
every ride is the way
you want it to be.

You can only hope for
the best, but we have a long
ways home and we'll stop here

and there along the
way and pick berries.

Best to go home with
berries, at least we'll
have something to show.

ANDY: My motto is,

"A little bit of
work right now, saves
a lot of work later."

Now that's the stove that's
got to come out, and the
new one's got to come in.

Think I'll see how tall
this deck is and get
going on this project.

I wanna build an elevator,
a little over 20-feet
tall, for my artist's yurt.

And it's gonna be used,
initially, to lift up a new
stove and take out the old

stove and get them down.

But in the long run,
this should make it easy
to bring firewood up

to this upper
deck, or water.

Both are two things
that you need every day.

And two things that are
very heavy to lug up
two flights of stairs.

Building a tall
elevator shaft is kind
of a fun, challenging,

and a little bit of a
zany project to be doing.

This project is definitely
a, maybe a one of a
kind for out in the bush.

I tend to, uh, be
quite an experimenter.

I like to do things a
little bit different.

Sometimes I have
great successes.

Other times,
I have great failures.

But every time I do something,
I learn something new.

It's gonna be heavy.

It's gonna be a challenge
to lift it, but, uh, once
it's up, it'll all be good.

There was a lot of
chainsaw work in this.

A lot of cutting,
notching and nailing.

I'm trying to do a good job
with all my joinery work on it
so it's a good strong tower.

So, when I stand it up,
I don't have to worry
about it collapsing

and it will hopefully
last for many years.

Oh, man.

I wanna make it as
nice and as permanent as I can.

That's kind of the way
I try and do things now.

When I first came here, I
spent a lot of time building
things kind of temporary.

From now on, everything's
gonna be pretty permanent.

All right. I think I need
to get a gin pole on there.

Yeah, this one might
be long enough. Don't break.

The toughest thing about
this entire project is
the standing up process.

It's a lot of work to go get
the logs, it's a lot of work
to do all the chainsaw work.

But the real challenge
is how do you take something
that's 6x6 and 20-foot-long

and try and stand
it up vertical from
a horizontal position.

All this gin pole is doing
is giving me leverage and
mechanical advantage on

getting it started to come up.

Yeah, the key is this pole.

If this pole snaps,
then, uh, the whole
thing's not gonna work.

I have no idea whether
the gin pole I have is
gonna be able to withstand

the pressures
and the forces on it.

But if I tie everything
upright and really pay
attention to where ropes are

attached and how they're
attached, I'm hoping
I can get it to go up.

Uh, I think I'm ready
to give it a shot.

It's either gonna be damn good
or damn bad, one or the other.

If that pole doesn't
break, I'm in good shape.

If these posts don't
slide, I'm in good shape.

If these posts don't
buckle, I'm in good shape.

And if any one of those
things goes wrong, I'm in
really, really bad shape.

I'm really unsure about
this elevator shaft going
from horizontal to vertical.

When I start lifting, if I
don't hear anything popping
or cracking, I'll be okay.

But I could get it halfway
up and the whole thing fails
and comes crashing down.

I'm just gonna have to go
slow and hope like heck
I can get it vertical.

Posts are bending.
It's leaning quite a bit too.

It's bending those
posts right over.

Whoa, whoa!

ANDY: Bending those

Well, that bracket
just failed.

I got to get it on the ground
before I do anything else.

Yeah. Well, it's up.

I think I had some
failures, but it's up.

These brackets
definitely failed.

But it's success,
it's up in the air.

That feels pretty good.

It looks a lot taller
up in the air than
it did on the ground.

I'm pretty happy with
it, it's nice to see
it standing vertical.

That gin pole worked good.

Anytime you're doing
something new, there's
always the unforeseen.

And today was no
exception for that.

Just a lot of
little things trying to
figure out how to do it

when you're
working by yourself.

And that's what it
boils down to for me.

You know, two people, a lot
of these jobs go pretty easy.

One person, you really
got to think it through.

But, uh, with a little
bit of perseverance and,
uh, a few oh (bleep) moments,

the job got done.

Oh, yeah, look
at that elevator.

This looks good.
Good project, good day.

It's beer thirty.
Maybe two beer
thirties after that.

AGNES: As long as you have
an idea of what you're
trying to go out and

go get then you should
be able to be successful.

And that's one of our
values we have here.

That looks like a good
place to stop over there.

Since we didn't see anything
at the, um, ocean, might as
well stop and see if there's a

few berries so we don't have
to go home empty-handed.

We usually take this time
of the year to pick as
much berries as we can.

The first berry to
ripe was the salmonberry,
which we call the akpiks.

They usually grow
down by the coast.

TINMIAQ: Let's go
pick us some berries.

AGNES: Let's go pick
us some berries.

Today, we went down to the
ocean and hunted around for a
while, but no seals showed up.

No caribou on the
land showed up.

Birds didn't even fly over.

We should have a couple
hours left of daylight
so, um, better pick berries

instead of go
home empty-handed.

Definitely would have
been nice to catch
a seal or a caribou.

Well, at least we got
some salmonberries.

Definitely not a wasted trip.

This should be enough
for a couple gallons.

-Harder to find akpiks

-Yup.
-Probably the last time we'll
get to pick berries, too.

I'm glad we decided to stop.

-Yup, not bad spot.

Hopefully we'll come up at
least with, um, five gallons.

Five gallons of salmonberries
will make me happy.

Berries is always a
good sweet something.

When you eat something a
little sweet, it always
cheers everybody up.

So, berries are well worth it.

We love our berries.

It's a real good
part of our diet.

-Between the three of us,
we picked a lot of berries.

-I ate a lot of berries.

-Good couple gallons
with all three of us
pick together, huh?

-Yeah.

We can start picking towards
the boat now and call it
a day for picking berries.

Today has been pretty good.

Even though we
didn't catch a seal or a
caribou or anything else,

we picked
quite a few berries.

So, this whole trip
didn't go to waste.

I just love to be
outdoors, whether it'd be
berry picking, hunting,

running away from mosquitos,
you know, just being out
here this time of the year,

it's a great place to be.

JESSIE: Opportunity
is something you got
to seize out here.

You wait one second,
it's one second too late.

You got to jump on it,
got to have steel nerves,
go for what you want.

Get this breast here.

Breast meat is really good.

Breast is where the best
meat is on these birds.

Good nutritious meat,
these grouse are.

Just kind of pulled
up to this little trail
and looked like there was

a lot of cranberries
out, and I know the
grouse like cranberries,

so, just kind
of went for where the
cranberries are and ran

into a whole flock of them,
and there's more out there,

but I'm happy with
what I got here.

This is enough to
make a few good meals.

Good, healthy,
clean food, right here.

The kind of food
I like to eat.

Nothing gives me energy
like meat that comes off
the land that surrounds me.

I'm not the only thing
that likes to eat these.

This is a great
attractant for lynx or
marten, come wintertime.

My gizzard.
This part of it is
like a delicacy to me.

I could never get tired
of eating gizzards.

Especially
cranberry-flavored gizzards.

Now, I got myself
some meals, here.

I'm gonna head back to camp
and cook this up for dinner
and get some sleep tonight.

while I've been gone.

That's what happens, though.

country, out here.

It's not like you're
gonna be like,

"I'm gonna go camp somewhere
where there's no bears."

He missed the butter.

Well, he's kind of had
his fun while I was
gone, it looks like.

What can you do?
It's bear country.

It's all bear country.

This is like, why I like
coming out into places like
this, it's wild out here.

You never know what
you're gonna see, you
got to be prepared.

Count my losses
as nothing major.

I'd rather it be my sleeping
mat than me whenever I was
sleeping on my sleeping mat.

I know one thing, this is
a really good spot to come
back and hunt bear at.

Gonna call this
hill Bear Hill.

In the future, I can
come back here and try
to get that rascal.

Well, shoot I got, got.

Yogi Bear got me this time.

But like I said, I'll be back.

GLENN: I go from
landmark to landmark, I
just follow the country.

I look for the landmarks,
the terrain, the
mountains, the rivers.

I just let my legs
do the walking.

As much as I like
exploring, it sure is
nice to be headed home.

I probably got less
than 10 miles to go.

I just need to float a little
further down that stream.

These are all familiar
mountains over here.

My lake's right
in that valley.

I can see the ridge
to the north of my camp,

and the mountains
that are further to the east.

This little raft has taken me
as far as I can go with it.

If I go any further, I'll
go behind the mountain up
here and I'll miss my lake.

Oh, wow, holy cow.

A cow moose with a calf.

It's been a while since I
saw a cow with a calf. Neat.

That's good to see, because
in just over a month from now,
I'm gonna be hunting moose.

And where there are cow moose,
the bulls are gonna come.

They're looking for
cows to mate with.

That's good for me.

If it wasn't for moose
out here, I wouldn't be
able to live out here.

That's the main animal
I hunt every year.

Six months' meat right there.

A hunter wants to keep
track of the animals, even
when he's not hunting them.

Just like a farmer, he keeps
track of his crops even when
he's not harvesting them.

After spending some time
exploring, it's kind of nice
to be back in a forest I know.

Here's my canoe.
Right where I left it.

I left my canoe right over
here on the edge of the lake

when I left
earlier this summer.

I love it, being out and
exploring, but I love
getting back home, too.

It's just so comfortable
back in the cabin after
sleeping in a little tent

for days and days.

When I left the lake, it was
still spring, there was still
ice on part of the lake.

And I made a big loop
and came back, and now it's
towards the end of the summer.

Things will be
changing real fast.

things about living this
lifestyle is you have

to be very creative
and very inventive.

You don't always have the
resources to work with.

spent several days building
an elevator shaft using

harvested materials
along the Yukon River.

The elevator will
help him raise a 300-pound
custom-built stove to

the second
floor of his yurt.

-Oh, yeah.

NARRATOR: After raising the
shaft and attaching cables and
a winch to power the elevator,

Andy is now ready
for the final test.

-I've made a, a new stove.
I'm pretty excited about this.

It's gonna make this yurt
very comfortable year-round.

Right now, it's a
three-season structure, and
this stove is gonna allow

me to have this become
a four-season structure.

Whoa, that
ain't gonna happen.

Holy mackerel.

Come on, baby.

Yeah. It's on!

And not on my foot,
that's a good thing.

Thank God I have a tractor.

It's on the elevator,
I didn't tip it over, I
didn't break the glass door.

And I didn't break my back.

Boy, if I had made it an
eighth of an inch bigger,

it wouldn't have
gone through that door.

I didn't even think about
that when I was building it.

But somehow it made it.

It's a lot of work
to move a whole bunch
of steel like that

and it was a
bit of a struggle.

It was pretty much at
the limits of what I could
carry and move by myself,

but mission accomplished.

Whew. The elevator worked.

I just squeaked by getting
up with the, the length
of the stove, but it's in.

And, uh, the yurt's gonna
say warm now at 50 below zero.

It's gonna be very
comfortable in here.

And I've got something
that I made instead of
something factory-made.

This whole yurt and everything
in it is produced in Alaska,

or from the land
around Calico Bluff.

All the lumber,
all the materials.

Right on. Oh, man.

That was a back breaker. Whew.

All the work that's gone into
building this yurt, building
this tower, building this

stove, today was kind of
a big payoff for that.

Just to be able to walk out
and sit on the deck and enjoy
the scenery in the beautiful

Yukon River and have a
cold beer and know that this

project's done
made it all worthwhile.

It's just very
peaceful, tranquil.

It's one thing that I
have worked hard for up here,

and that is to
live comfortably here.

And sometimes you
got to work your butt off to

make it to where
you can live comfortably.

Hmm, that's a good beer.

(sighs)

AGNES: The kids are
pretty much following
Chip and I's footsteps.

Pretty soon they'll go out on
their own and teach their own
families in their own home.

CHIP: It's been pretty windy.

Did you guys see any seals?

-No, we didn't see any seals.
I didn't even shoot my gun.

-Oh, that's all right.

Oh, look like you got
nice berries, though.

-Yup.
-Let's have
breakfast for dinner.

I'll whip you
guys up some bacon and
pancakes or something.

-Salmonberry
syrup sounds wonderful.

-Breakfast for dinner.

-I'm glad you ladies scored
these fresh, fresh akpiks,
man, that's pretty killer.

You can always count on at
least there being some akpiks.

But seals you can't count
on because they migrate.

-Good to have something
sweet anyways.

CHIP: The fact is you filled
the boat with something.

You came back with something,
and that's what counts.

It's important for these
kids to be able to utilize
what's around them.

They know how to make food,
they know how to go get food.

So, when I'm
gone or my wife's gone
or we're both gone,

my kids can take
care of themselves.

You know, we want the girls
to be able to have a good life.

And I think they
like doing this.

And they like the
food, that's for sure.

There you girls go.

Some pancakes, some
syrup, some tea.

-Yay.

-I love breakfast for dinner.

-Hmm, these pancakes are
really good, too, dad.

-Good, it'll warm
you guys up anyway.

-Real good breakfast
for dinner.

-Especially fresh
food like that, not
even 24 hours picked.

CHIP: Yup, those

JESSIE: I'm an animal, too.

I got to eat to get by.

And I wanna be part
of this system, not
observing it always.

I like watching the animals,
but I also like eating them.

I, uh, hiked out here to do
some, uh, hunting and camping,

and now I'm making up a pot of
tea and cooking up my grouse.

This is definitely gonna be a
feast in itself, right here.

Throw in some of
these gizzards and
hearts and livers.

That's the good
stuff, right there.

Nothing like good, fresh
meat out here to eat.

I'd rather eat this than
some kind of farm-raised
chicken any day.

One of the things I like to
do when I'm out on a trip
like this is I like to eat

something off
the land and sit around
the fire and kind of

just meditate
on the coming season.

It's gonna be a
big season for me.

So, it's good just to get
out there and clear my head,
and I tend to think the best

when I'm out in the wilderness,
and that's my happy place.

There you have it,
right there, an amazing meal,

provided by
the country around me.

That's as good as it gets.

Feel like you just
got to take each day
and seize it and live

the way you wanna live
that day, because you're
never guaranteed tomorrow.

This is, like,
such a good meal.

This grouse is amazing,
and the spruce tea
with the cranberries is,

like, a delight.

I don't know why I don't
make that more often.

Sitting out here, with
this tea, and this grouse,
and this fire, and this camp,

I feel like I got all a
fella needs, right now.
