The men who are alleged to have
robbed the Glasgow-London mail train

of a sum in excess of �3 million,

made their first appearance in court
today charged with robbery.

Large crowds had gathered to see
the accused arrive

in a fleet of police cars and
an hour before the hearing started

a strong police guard ringed
the court building.

All the accused were under
heavy escort

and were only in court
for a few minutes.

Police objected to bail on the
grounds of the gravity of the case

and the fact that much of the money
has not been recovered.

All the accused were remanded in
custody for seven days

and granted legal aid.

After the brief hearing, the men
were taken under escort to prison.

Police said it would be several
weeks before the prosecution

was ready to proceed with its case.

The robbery is already being
described in newspapers abroad
