that there'’s a real issue

of police brutality
in East Bay,

I decided to take my camera
out to the streets

and really try to, you know,
document what was going on.

When I first watched the cops,

I'’d just drive around
West Oakland,

and I'’d look on my...
If I saw the police
I'’d pull over,

I'’d have this submarine thing
that went through my sunroof
with the camera.

I had the little remote control

and I could press zoom in,
zoom out,

and I'’d look at the TV screen
and see what I see.

I wouldn'’t even think
of that.

They gave me a ticket
for copwatching.

He cited me for what he says

I was riding my bike
on the sidewalk.

But really what we were doing
was approaching a copwatch stop.

He doesn'’t like us copwatching,

so what he does is
he selectively enforces laws
that don'’t even apply,

because we weren'’t even
riding our bike.

What'’s really good about this
is that we can get it on camera.

We can help document
these types of things,

and help educate the community
about these types of things,

so that this stuff
doesn'’t happen in the future.

January first, 2009, in Oakland,
where I was living,

a young man by the name
of Oscar Grant

was killed on a train platform
in front of hundreds of people,

and it was videotaped.

The people that documented
the police killing Oscar Grant

were not pro-active copwatchers,

but they were copwatchers.

and until that point,

It'’s not every police murder
that people get out on
the streets and sush it down.

It happened in Oakland
after Oscar Grant was killed.

It happened in Ferguson in 2014,
when Mike Brown was murdered.

It'’s not my place, but,

you know, if the cops are
hurting people, maybe I should
go out there and document it.

So, I took time off work
and I flew out there.

And this thing was David
waiting, everyday, standing
by that memorial

flagging people in
and giving them

prosecutors today dropped
the charges against
the remaining officers

as the prosecutor suggested
the legal system worked
against her.

After four trails and
no convictions,

today the prosecutor dropped
the remaining cases

while accusing police
and the justice system

of undermining her case.

After much though and prayer
it has become clear to me that

without being able to work with
an independent investigative
agency from the very start,

without having a say in
the election of whether

our case is proceed
in front of a judge or a jury,

without communal oversight
of policing in this community,

without real substantive
reforms to the current
criminal justice system,

we could try this case a hundred
times and cases just like it,

and we would end up
with the same result.

Accordingly,

I have decided not to proceed
on the cases against Officer
Garrett, Sergeant Alicia White

or to re-litigate the case
against William Porter.

As a mother, as a mother

the decision not to proceed
on these trails on the remaining
trails is agonizing.

However as a Chief prosecutor
elected by the citizens
of Baltimore

I must consider the dismal
likelihood of conviction
at this point.

What I'’ve ultimately learned
throughout this arduous process

is that although no small task,

justice is always worth
the price paid for it'’s pursuit.

pleaded to one count of
criminal sale of heroin,

and then he also pleaded to
a non-violent de-felony
on the gun charge.

Everything else go away,
he'’s gonna do four years.

Um, the two sentences
for the two crimes
are concurrent,

so it'’s going to be four years
of straight time.

And then, he gets out, he gets
one and a half to three years
of post release supervision.

What was unusual in
this case is that his,

his disposition was tied
to his mothers case.

Part of the deal, although
they didn'’t say it explicitly
in court today,

was that Ramsey pleading to help
to make her case go away.

So she pleaded today and
got three years probation.

And they were really hanging
her case over his head,

so that if he didn'’t take
the deal,

uh, they might have gone
to trail against her.

Ramsey'’s lawyers actually
went out of their way

to say in court that
they have advised their client
that if he talks with the media

and says that he is not guilty
