Sebastian in Lala Land.

So this introduction to. To

Ryan Gosling's character in a lot of ways.

You want to tell your story.

It's like it's like a two handed

story, two characters,
not unlike Whiplash in some ways.

You've got in this case, you have
the character of Sebastian, character Mia.

There's a way in which when you introduce
them, you want to kind of

give them equal weight.

So before we gave equal
time to Emma Stone, and now when we start

his story, it's important.

You know that you give him his due.

And that's why.

When we go here.

Into this section where he's.

Sitting here looking across the street

at this venue,

this place restaurant that he likes
but he doesn't like.

It's been

that it's been turned into a restaurant,
a bad restaurant, in his opinion.

But this is really important
for his character

to really, again, linger on the face,
to really show the face.

And again, something Damien loves to do.

Show details, little close closeups.

Inserts come in in a way
that is not a traditional wide shot

establishing
come in when little details that show

you a little bit
something about the character.

And then we go into another single,
take another lala land single take.

That's something
Linus and Damien love doing with this.

They love telling their story that way.

But of course, in some cases here
we have to combine one

take with another take.

So there's a transition happening there.

And this is an unbroken take,

but an important scene because we felt
it was a character scene

focuses on on Sebastian,
his relationship with his sister.

We learn a lot about his character
in the scene.

So for the most part,
it was important to play out

another transition to another take.

Okay.

I did it from the ashes.

That a very Damien Chazelle transition.

He like to intersperse
these long takes with quick cut

little inserts to get you into the scene

and this little exchange.

And then of course

that lets you go into another take
which lasts a certain amount of time.

That's something starting again.

I'll do it again.

So Sebastian's story.

He? Damian wanted that to mirror.

The beginning of Emma Stone's story.

Which is

cut very closely,
very similarly to each other.

And then, of course,
the shot of the coffee

being poured in is the same shot.

And there's a way that Damien.

Damien

really wanted to give equal weight
to both characters.

He wanted to do this not only through

close to equal time,
but also in an editorial sense.

He wanted to really show that these
there was a similarity.

These are two characters separate.

They haven't met each other.

But somehow as an audience,
you suddenly know

just through the grammar,
through the cinematic language, you know

that there is something
that they have in common.
