And now let's talk about

contrasting styles in Whiplash.

I've talked and spoken
a lot about contrast.

I think that's a strength of Damien

Chazelle's vision of his is filmmaking.

He believes in contrast, he believes

if you do one pace
and in in the appropriate

part of the story, if you change that
pace, that one accentuates the other .

And so

clearly he saw whiplash as a story

with velocity, with rhythm,

precision, speed, a lot of fast cuts.

But he knew that that would be enhanced

if other parts of the story
were not like that.

Damien felt that we could play

Fletcher story
with the cuts for impact with the speed,

but that we would play other stories
like the stories

that centered around
Nicole Andrews girlfriend.

We could play those differently.

And so it was important
to do the contrast.

And so this scene sets that up. So

Andrew's just

been chosen by Fletcher
to join the studio band.

So in terms of where he is
emotionally, he is he is on a high.

He's feeling good about himself.

He's happy. He's he is at ease.

And so from this scene
where he's just found out,

he's going to join a studio band, we go
and transition to the next scene where he.

Gets the confidence to ask out Nicole.

Ask her out on a date.

Hey. How are you? Good.

How are you? I'm good, thanks.

You usual.

Oh, you know,

look, I don't really know how.

I see in your lot.

And I think that you're really pretty.

And would you want to go out with me?

Ever.

Please go away.

Oh, my God.

I'm so sorry.

I'm so sorry.

I'm just messing with you. I'm
watching you.

Oh, my God.

Hi. Sorry. That's.

That's actually pretty mean.

I'm sorry. I didn't mean to.

What's your name?

Damian made the choice
to play this in a single shot.

He actually shot coverage for this.

He shot singles of both actors.

And when I did my first cut,
that's how I cut it.

Because

I felt that it was something
where you'd want to go

in close on their face to really feel
the emotion, to see the emotion.

But when Damien and I started working
together, he thought, You know what?

That's this is actually something
that I like in the one and it's something

that I think we should own in this size

because later.

We're going to play things differently.

We're going
to we're going to want to contrast that.

And so this big scene
where they're meeting,

he decided not to go into
the coverage at all.

And so.

Again, a

lot of things go into that decision.

You know,
one of the things that goes into it is.

Is, of course.

You know, the formal considerations, okay,

if we stay in the single, then
that means that's going to be enhancing

what comes right afterwards
when we go into this.

Into back into his jazz world.

He comes out of it,
you know, here he's leaving.

He's flying high.

The music tells you that

now the music ends.

And he's in trouble

now. It's back to real life.

Now it's back to jazz band.

And so the idea is to make
this fragmented.

Little snippets, fast cuts.

Painful.

The opposite of what we just saw.

So certainly
there's formal considerations there,

but also it's based on performance.

So Damien really loved the two actors.

He loved what they did.

He loved the work
Miles Teller did in that in that one.

Or he loved what
Melissa Benoist did, who plays Nicole.

And that's another factor that that is

is perhaps the most important one.

And if if you

don't have the performances,
then that's very hard to do.

But Damian liked the performances,

and so that was probably
the biggest consideration.

But certainly there were other formal
considerations as well.
