Now I want to talk to you
about a very interesting editing technique

that I learned from a great editor,
Tim Squires.

I know the film editor, Tim Squires,

who was one of my mentors.

He's Ang Lee's editor.

He cut Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,
The Life of Pi.

He's a brilliant editor.

He will cut scenes

three different ways at first.

I mean, he'll end up cutting the scene
a hundred different ways,

like most editors.

But his first cut,
he will do three versions.

He'll do a version where he cuts the scene
all in wide shots.

Then he'll do a version where he cuts it
all in medium shots.

Then he'll do a version rate
cuts around close, and he'll do that

using all the best wide pieces
that he likes.

Then he'll do it using all the best medium
pieces, all best close pieces.

And he does this as best as he can.

Sometimes he has to go to other coverage
because maybe

certain things aren't covered
very well in the mediums

or the close ups, or it really depends
on what coverage was shot.

But that's the basic idea.

Then when he's done with that, he has

what he feels are the best wides
in a sequence

cut together and then the best mediums
and the best closes.

Then he will mix and match
because he has done

the work of finding all the best pieces
that work for him.

He'll mix and match
until he gets the right combination.
