Paul Gambaccini is one of the most
established names in BBC radio.

The BBC couldn't wait to drop me.

"Oh, my God. We're associated with
a child molester."

Sir Cliff Richard's Berkshire home
has today been searched by officers

from South Yorkshire Police.

All I know is that I was never
guilty of anything like that.

There was this crowd of press
outside the house.

I remember just thinking,
"What the BLEEP is happening?"

Move back, please.

I can't really answer
too many questions at the moment.

I hope you'll forgive me.

What people are trying
to say about me

is affecting this house and my kids.

I have to face the prospect that

it might not be safe for me
to live in this country any more.

I prayed every night and said,
"I know it's not true

"and God knows that it's not true."

All right.

It's a difficult thing to talk
about

even now I realise
how difficult it is.

Don't go on television saying,
"Accuse celebrities,

"you will be believed."

You're just inviting national chaos,
which is what we had.

All I can do is quote my QC,

"If Mr Fox had been
a middle manager of

"a widget factory from
the West Midlands,

"we wouldn't be here today."

My name's Mark Williams-Thomas,

and I'm the man that exposed
jimmy Saville back in 2012.

I went to ITV and said,
"Let's make this program me,"

and they were very nervous.

I mean, the Savile film was
a moment that's changed history.

It meant everybody was touchable.

He was a predator on young girls.

I'm sure it was why he always
wore his shell suits,

so he could just whip his
elastic shell suit bottoms down

very quickly.

Program me goes out,

and the fallout for the next two,
three days is significant,

it's huge. I mean, I was getting
probably ten or so emails

a day about new cases.

Rolf Harris, Max Clifford,
Freddie Starr,

you know, those names
were given to me.

I got a phone call from my agent
saying a police officer would like

to speak to me as soon as possible.

I said, "Yeah, I'll pull the team
together and we'll meet you,"

so we went up to the sixth floor
in ITV Towers

and we agreed that we would
work together,

and that is when Operation Yewtree
was created.

I am very keen that any person who
has suffered abuse,

whether it's at the hands of Savile
or indeed others,

actually comes forward and has
the confidence to tell us

what they've experienced.

This investigation, the profile of
it, has empowered what the police

call "a staggering number" of
victims to come forward

to report sexual exploitation.

For the first couple of months,
there was an arrest every week.

Mr Glitter, what did you have to
tell police today?

Gary Glitter, Dave Lee Travis,
Max Clifford,

just arrest after arrest
after arrest.

It was, "Who's going to be next?"

Can I ask you for your reaction to
the reports that you've

been arrested on suspicion
of sex of fences? No comment.

It was an incredibly good story
for the tabloids,

in particular the red top tabloids.

You'd be playing sort of like a
paedo bingo on the news floor

and it's like, "Oh, I wonder
which middle-aged former DJ

"or TV presenter that could be."

There's one thing I hate
close to my heart is paedophiles.

I cannot stand them.

When the police start talking about
"a staggering number" of victims,

"an unprecedented level
of alleged abuse,"

you know even they are shocked.

I mean, it was manic.

You never knew when some more
details were going to come out.

We started keeping a sort of
a Yewtree list,

those that we knew had been
investigated that we'd reported on,

those that we hadn't been able
to report on.

Jimmy Savile had
an imperial personality.

Er, you just didn't mess with Jim.

I went on to Good Morning Britain

and spoke to Lorraine Kelly about
the exposure of jimmy Savile.

There was a man who was watching
television with his fiancee,

who turned to her and said,

"How dare he talk about jimmy Savile
like that when he did that to me?"

Let's go back to that highest
new entry at number 16,

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

Paul Gambaccini was obviously huge
on BBC Radio 1 and Radio 2,

on Top Of The Pops,
arms round people,

that's what the Top Of The Pops
studio was like.

He was also on Radio 1 as a DJ
at the same time as jimmy Savile.

In the Yewtree bingo game that,
let's face it,

the whole country was playing,

Paul Gambaccini was ticking
the boxes,

he was going to be a name
that was in the frame.

DOORBELL RINGS

At 4.38 in the morning, I was
awakened by what sounded to me

the tail end of my doorbell.
I open the door,

there are a lot
of police people looking at me.

They come in, and one of them says,
"You are under arrest

"for blah-blah-blah buggery."

I was led out by two officers
into an unmarked police car,

and I was taken
to Charing Cross Station.

I'd been accused
of sexual interference

with 14- and 15-year-old boys.

My response has just been to accept
what has happened as reality.

There's no point in denying it,

there's no point in saying,
"It's mad,"

or, "How can this be happening?"

Well, it's happening.

So I have to adjust to it
and move on.

I tend to concentrate
on two activities.

One is reading,

and the other is doing acrostic
puzzles by Thomas H Middleton,

and it has turned out that
these puzzles are so involving

that they take my mind off of what
I otherwise might be thinking about.

THUNDERING FOOTSTEPS

Welcome to the very loud
Christopher.

Sol met Paul in February 2010.

We married in June 2012,

and then this happened
in October 2013.

Er, so I, you know, in the
grand scheme of relationships,

I hadn't known him all that long.

The allegations were made about
a period of time in the late '70s,

early '80s, and so I, you know,
I didn't know this part of his life.

Of course, you're then confronted
with the issue of

"Oh, God, has he clone something?"

Stuart Hall's facing 15 charges
including the alleged rape

of a 22-year-old woman...

Coronation Street actor Bill Roach
said that he was astounded

and deeply horrified to be charged
with raping a 15-year-old girl.

Jim Davidson was one of two men
arrested by officers earlier today

on suspicion of sexual of fences...

It did feel like there was
a reckoning,

that powerful men who had been able
to get away with it,

now women were saying, "We're not
going to let that happen.

"We are going to speak up
about what happened to us."

It was front page news all the time.

You almost wondered who was
going to be next,

and I guess, to be honest,
you never sort of thought,

"Oh, you'll be next."

Get them off, get them off,
get them off.

Foxy gets foxy!

I am Neil Fox,

I suppose on the radio
professionally known as Dr Fox,

and at the time, I was doing
the breakfast show for Magic FM.

Tell me about what happened
the day of your arrest.

Did my radio show, had a good show,

my program me director at the time
was sort of just,

just sort of waving at me,
and he just said,

"Oh, need to come downstairs
with me,"

and then met four police officers.

They read me my rights
and said I was being arrested, and,

I mean, I was absolutely gobsmacked.

Ancl then your nightmare begins.

Best known for the hugely popular
Chart Show on Capital Radio...

I think as a mum, you know, you...

You suddenly realise how protective
you suddenly feel.

I mean, this sort of overwhelming
desire to protect my family

suddenly came in. I felt like I had
a responsibility to show people

that I thought this was rubbish,
that I thought this was bullshit.

This was someone I had been married
to for, you know,

a very long time. I know Neil really
well, and I know what Neil is

and I know what Neil isn't.

I think part of the problem of
having clone breakfast radio

for so long is you wake up early.

That's when you can struggle
getting back to sleep,

and that's when you can struggle

to sort of get weird thoughts
out of your head.

Ancl those are the times I find hard,

because my kids are upstairs
sleeping,

and I love them,

and, you know, what people are
trying to say about me is affecting

this house and my wife and my kids.

The TV weatherman Fred Talbot
has been charged with

a string of of fences

following investigations into
historic child abuse.

Move back, please.

Max Clifford is accused of multiple
indecent assaults against teenagers.

Arriving at court, Dave Lee Travis.

I heard a female voice then,
she's got the advantage.

Rolf? Rolf?

The court heard Rolf Harris
was known as the octopus

because of the way he had his hands
all over women.

Yewtree's probably
the biggest story

I will ever have worked on
in my career.

These were massive celebrities.
We're talking household names here.

I didn't get starstruck by anybody,
more the opposite, in a way.

Interviewing Rolf Harris,
for example,

who was very morose and had
very little to say,

unless he went into character.

Ancl there was one point in a break
in interviewing where he started

singing Sunrise to me, that sort
of seemed really strange,

but on another level, it gave him
a little confidence

in a stressful situation.

For the press it was like,
"Oh, my God," we were lapping it up.

There's this fascination with
the sex lives of celebrities,

and there's no getting away with it,

it sold so that's why
you kept doing it.

Watch your backs, please.
Watch your backs.

This was the Wild West, it really
was, in terms of the media.

They were writing almost anything.

And it became quite febrile,
it became mad.

I'd read stuff and go,
"That's not true,"

and I'd read other stuff and think,
"Really?"

It wasn't just the press
and the public fascinated by it,

it spread, it had tentacles
that went all over the place.

I mean, at one point you had
the Prime Minister at the time,

David Cameron, on This Morning
discussing it.

Those are the names
on a piece of paper.

You know the names
on that piece of paper.

Will you be speaking
to those people?

There is a danger if we're not
careful that this could turn into

a sort of, er, a sort of witch-hunt,
particularly against people

who are gay, and I am worried about
the sort of thing

you're doing right now, giving me
a list of names

that you've taken off the internet.

I'm very clear that,
at the right time,

and the right stage, it is important
to put that information

and name out there, but it has to
be done incredibly carefully.

When the media or the police
put information out there,

name somebody when they haven't
got sufficient evidence,

that's where the problems occur.

My sister and her partner
and myself and a friend,

we were in the Algarve
where I have a house.

At five to ten I think it was
in the morning,

the phone rang, and it was
a friend of mine here,

and he was looking after
the apartment block,

and he said, "The police are here
at the apartment...

"..and we're not quite sure
what to do about this,"

and I said, "Well, what's it about?"

They said, "Well, they don't know,

"but they have a warrant
to search your apartment,"

and I said, "Please let them in."

I'd just bought that apartment.
It had a very expensive front door.

We put the TV on, and they showed
world news, and there it was.

Sir Cliff Richard's Berkshire home
has today been searched by officers

from South Yorkshire Police.

They're investigating
an alleged sexual of fence

said to have taken place in
Sheffield during the 1980s

involving a boy under the age of 16.

The biggest surprise for me
was Cliff Richard.

Cliff was the one that everybody
has heard of,

I mean, you know,
no matter what your age group,

I mean, you go back to his early
films, you know, Summer Holiday,

where he's a cheeky chappy, amusing
the crowds on that particular

rainy day by singing at Wimbledon.

# Yeah, yeah

# I'm all shook up. #

I believe the Bible teaches that
Jesus Christ is coming back again.

The one thing that has made my life
really terrific,

really valuable, is the fact that
Jesus entered it some 19 years ago.

I was there quite early,

because quite often Billy
would ask me if I would speak

to this group because they've
given their services free,

and there's the police that
you might like to talk to,

and a group of youngsters
from clubs.

Sheffield held 40,000 people maybe

This whole side of the arena
was packed with people.

It's a very, very dynamic feeling
when you get there.

I think that night I sang something
and I spoke something, that's all,

and then Billy comes up and does
his big evangelistic sermon.

The problem in the world today
is pronounced with one word - sin.

Ancl the Bible says
we have all sinned

and come short of the glory of God.

My accuser apparently went
to speak to a film-maker

who had clone a film
about jimmy Savile.

I get a contact from somebody
who says to me,

"I was abused by Cliff."

You know, sometimes you speak to
people and you know straight away

whether they're telling you
the truth or not,

but his account seemed
to be believable.

So I passed it to the police
and didn't do anything more.

The 73-year-old had no notice
of the search,

but he points out the media did.

He made a more than subtle hint

that it was the police
who tipped them off,

although South Yorkshire
deny doing this.

They wanted a scoop.

Not that they wanted a fact
or some truth, they wanted a scoop.

I did think that it was
in the public interest

to report this.

I thought it was a great scoop.

If you go into show business,
then you have to, I think, accept

that with fame comes scrutiny,

and may come
some unpleasant headlines.

God help Great Britain,
that's alll can say,

you know, if it takes them 11 months

and they still can't figure out
what they want to do.

Remember, this isn't even a trial,

this is the decision
whether to have a trial or not.

I've been very amused and touched at
how Christopher can tell

when I'm having an internal rage
fit, because apparently,

my fingers go___

Er, yeah, there's a strange
facial expression that you do,

and you walk...

Sometimes when we're walking along,
you'll kind of lean forward

and tense up.

When Paul showed me
the charge sheet,

now, for me, that moment
was a great relief,

because this was the moment
when I knew it was false.

To go into specifics, they listed
a series of sexual acts

that Paul had supposedly clone
to them,

one of which in particular I knew
Paul doesn't do and never has clone.

It's a peculiarity, it's not
a particularly exotic sexual act,

but he didn't do it, and I knew then
that they were making it up.

After I was arrested, it took three
days for me to be named

in the press.

The BBC couldn't wait to drop me.

What do you put that down to?

Fear of taint.

Fear of taint, all of these
organisations were afraid,

"Oh, my God, we're associated
with a child molester."

You can be arrested on the strength
of one person's allegation

before the investigation takes
place, so to name someone

in the press as a potential sex
offender on the strength of arrest

seems imbalanced and unfair to me,

given the implications of that
on someone's life.

I seem to remember Mark
Williams-Thomas being one of

the people who was very keen
to name Paul.

The point of naming him was in
relation to the radio show,

I think if you've been arrested
for allegations, as Gambaccini was,

should he carry on
with his radio show?

No, you shouldn't,

you should be suspended
pending that investigation,

the outcome of that.

That happens in any other
professional walk of life.

I suppose people say, why should
his name be publicised

when he hasn't clone anything wrong?

Yeah, I think there's a fair point,
but, you know, why should...?

He... We have to come from
the point of view is that,

at the moment, the point, a name is
put out into the public domain,

the decision is that there is
sufficient evidence to warrant that.

Is it sufficiently in
the public's interest

for an individual to be named in
relation to a criminal investigation

by the media?

The police have to weigh up whether
or not they think it's sufficient

to go and arrest somebody
in the first place.

There is absolutely a balance
and a very fine argument

about putting names into
the public domain of people

before they're charged.

Ancl I totally understand

the pain felt by people
like Paul Gambaccini.

The other side of the coin is that
I also spoke to women who told me

that they wouldn't have come forward
had they not heard

a certain man's name
in the public domain,

specifically Stuart Hall.

More victims came forward
when his name was made public,

and it is really important
in these sort of cases

that one woman's story
can be corroborated

with another victim's story.

Yeah, I have to say,
I find it really tough.

I'm a busy guy,
you know, I've always been busy.

I tell you what I have
started doing,

cos I've always been quite artistic.

I signed up for a sculpture course.

It's been very therapeutic.

Anyway, cut a long story short,

suddenly, in the middle of nowhere,
this girl that we've all been

having a chat to
while having a cup of tea

suddenly takes off her clothes
and sits down and she's the model,

and we... I didn't realise that
we're actually making

a clay sculpture of a naked person.

But of course I came home
and told my wife,

and talked to my mother-in-law,

and she then had a chat with
my father-in-law,

and he just went, "Oh, God, Neil
in this situation you're in

"at the moment,
don't you think it's really...?

"It's probably really dangerous to
be doing something where you've got

"a nude model there," and I...

I really hadn't thought about it
at all, and I went, "Really?"

Ancl they're going, "Yeah, just
imagine if someone happened to say

"who's..." And you kind of go,
"Oh, my God, you know, sadly,

"sadly they're right."

It's not unrealistic to expect
someone who is as famous as you

to maintain anonymity
in this sort of situation.

Well, I... Look, erm,
I don't think it's unrealistic,

actually, if you were just to go,
OK, if the law was that you can't

name someone unless you're
going to charge them,

they would literally just
be questioning you under caution.

Now, then you can go home,

you could still be doing your job,
you know,

no-one will be the wiser.

People judge you, of course they do.

I've done it in the past, you know,
I read what I read in the paper,

I make a quick judgment about
somebody, about their situation.

And I said, you've just got to
stop looking at it, you know,

do not search on social media.

It's just crazy.

It's a big moment,
cos you realise,

"Oh, I'm just going to have to
take this all the way now."

What were your emotions?

Well, look, I... I can't tell you.

I'm sure I wasn't
over the fucking moon.

Neil Fox was the latest celebrity
to face lurid allegations

that he was a sexual bully who
intimidated and groped

young female colleagues.

One section of the accusations aimed
at Neil Fox were office behaviour,

office banter, sort of like,
you know,

kissing a woman on her shoulder
while she was washing up a mug

in the office, erm,
touching them on bottoms,

and discussing a fantasy about where
he'd made love.

What was your response to hearing
what he'd been accused of,

you know, did you ever doubt Neil?

No, I didn't ever doubt Neil,
cos I didn't...

I just... I couldn't bel...

Well, I didn't really know,
actually, I don't know what...

I don't know what...

I don't want to
put other people down,

I don't want to say
that other people...

There were obviously things that
were important to other people,

but they definitely weren't criminal

and I just, I think to sort of,
you know,

pull someone's life apart for
someone that's not criminal

just seems criminal.

Obviously a lot of these accusations
came out, you know, late '90s,

early naughties, never was a decade
more aptly named, erm,

the lad culture, and you had
all the sort of like, you know,

the magazines like Loaded,
FHM, you know,

men like Chris Evans on TFI Friday
seemed to be setting the agenda

for what was appropriate.

But right now on this week's show,
Eva Herzigova.

This was where the whole banter
thing gets confused,

because were the men
still in control?

Is it true that,
when you were a little girl,

your grandfather told you
that if you drank a lot of beer,

your breasts would grow?

Yeah. Is that a true story?
Yeah, he did.

OK, well, look we've got
six minutes left, right?

What is a grandfather doing telling
his little granddaughter that

if she drinks a lot of beer, her
breasts are going to grow bigger?

I mean, I used to work in
the music industry,

so I, you know,
I was a record plugger,

my job was to book bands on TV,
and so I'd spent a lot of time

in that radio environment,
TV environment,

I knew the sort of banter,
I knew the jokes,

I knew the energy that they had
to stay up on air.

I know I said the show
was about a star.

Well, it is just about a star

with Simply Red and 300 dancers
and it is going to be...

It's not really about
standards of the time,

it's about right behaviour.

Whether it was just verbal banter
that actually was quite offensive,

what men had viewed as OK wasn't OK.

It's really hard, because there is
a huge part of me that just went,

"This is ridiculous, how can you
accuse my husband of this?"

But then at the same point,
I want to support women,

because I want to be able to say,

"You know what? If someone says
something inappropriate,

"you should hold them to account
for it."

And this is the thing I struggle
with as a woman.

One of the alleged victims gave
evidence from behind a screen

to protect her identity.

She claims that, at a car show
in 1991, when she was 15,

Neil Fox kissed her.

She described feeling horrible
and uncomfortable,

but says she didn't challenge him

because he was an older man
and a famous man.

My legal team just went,
"In this social media world

"we're living in now, I think you'd
be much better tried by

"three really smart independent
magistrates who understand the law

"and will not be looking
at social media."

Can we talk about
what you were accused of?

Er...

"HO.

I guess out of this experience,
I've moved on.

OK, I went through a tough time, and
then you have to try and rebuild.

The man whose picture they crave
isn't home,

but dozens of photographers
remain outside

the penthouse apartment
of Sir Cliff Richard.

You cannot stop thinking about it.

Friends came to visit,
and that was great.

We laughed together,
we played tennis together,

and then you go to bed,
and then it all crowds back at you.

"How could someone do this?"

I am feeling hate
and violent hate towards him,

what would I do with him
if I ever saw him,

and I thought,
"I can't live like this."

You know, I seem to remember one
headline that really bothered me,

and it just simply said,
"Sir Cliff molests underage boy,"

not "allegedly."

You know it's a lie,
I didn't...do that to a young boy.

I prayed every night,
I said, "He knows it's not true,

"I know it's not true,
and God knows it's not true."

I came out in shingles
allover my head.

Fortunately, a local doctor in
Portugal diagnosed it.

On about the third visit, he said,
"It's coming down your forehead,

"you don't want to get it in
your eyes cos it can blind you."

I said, "Well, how do you
get shingles?"

He just looked at me
and he gave a little tiny smile

and said, "Stress."

Finally my lawyers went with
the police

to find the places that
this person described.

They couldn't find the room.

The room he's talking about
wasn't there in 1985

He described that in the room,
there was sports equipment,

and the guy said, "No, that was
always kept somewhere else,"

so if my lawyers can dig this out,

why didn't the police just
throw the damn thing out?

It's obvious that it wasn't true.

There'll be no further action
against British performer

Sir Cliff Richard over allegations
of historical sex abuse.

I have to face the prospect that

it might not be safe for me
to live in this country any more,

in which case, I would go back
to the city of my birth, New York.

So to prepare for that,
and to get some spare cash

in a period of which I've not
been allowed to earn money,

I've been selling some things,

and you'll notice there are gaps
on the wall.

My original comic art and film
poster collection is slipping away,

and indeed, and the record walls,
there are little gaps now.

I understand the difficulties
sitting there

waiting for a process to move
forward.

This was a unique set
of circumstances.

There was multiple investigations,

a huge amount of information,
and limited people to deal with it.

Trying to track down information
and evidence that, you know,

in many cases, certainly from
a pre-digital age,

so those things take time.

We had to fly back to London
because my bail date was on Monday,

so I got up,
and I started feeling dizzy.

He was having a panic attack.

He was covered in sweat,
he was dizzy,

the room was spinning,
and I was comforting him on my bed,

and my phone rang,
and it was Kate the lawyer.

He went to take it in the hall,
and he came back in,

he straddled me on the bed
so that I didn't move

when he told me
what he was about to tell me.

And he said, "That was Kate.

"NFA, no further action."

It's recording.

One important thing would be to
try to find any kind of meaning

in this.

Why something so utterly ludicrous
and unjustifiable ever happened.

How could it happen?

If a complainant comes forward
with an allegation,

why on earth would we dismiss that?

There is absolutely no reason
for us to

cast doubt on what we are told
in terms of the allegation

until and as such time
that it's been investigated.

Free from the allegations that
he'd committed serial sex of fences,

Jim Davidson is pleased
with the outcome.

Allegations are allegations.

Anyone can make an allegation,

and I think the public was slightly
aware that some people

were making allegations
for the sake of it.

The man who plays Ken Barlow
never waive red in his denials,

and the jury agreed.

One of the alleged victims admitted
getting her facts wrong,

and one of the actors who
the women had said had seen them

in Bill Roach's dressing room here
denied that had ever happened.

Yes, they had some very
successful convictions,

but there were also people who
a jury found had clone nothing wrong,

or police found they didn't
even have enough evidence

to take them to court.

In these situations,
there are no winners.

Even in a Magistrates' Court,
you get locked away,

you get locked in a glass area,
and someone comes and locks you in

at the beginning of the clay,

and then they unlock you
at the end of the clay,

and you're in there on your own.

Ancl that's where I was
when the judge

acquitted me of everything.

I remember just closing my eyes
just thinking,

"That was a long
fucking 15 months...

"..for what?"

Today, Neil Fox was cleared of
the accusations he described

as "devastating."

Following my arrest over 14 months
ago, I strenuously denied

all of the allegations,
and today I have been vindicated.

This was a very unusual case,

because it was heard by a district
judge and two magistrates.

And they go out of their way

to say that they believe
all the women,

but for them, believing
the alleged victims is not enough

to prove that he's committed
a criminal of fence,

firstly because they
need corroboration,

and secondly they have to understand
the context in order

to establish that an of fence
actually took place.

In the sum-up, judge Riddle said
he believed the victims

and found them believable
and credible.

What's your take on that?

Well, I think you need to check
that quote. Have you got the quote?

Judge Riddle said,
"We heard from six women,

"we believed each of
the complainants.

"The question we must ask is whether
we are sure the facts alleged

"show the context
in which they occurred

"and sure that they amount
to criminal of fences."

OK.

What's your take on that?

Well, I mean clearly his take on it,
which is the only one that really

was at that moment pertinent,
was that he didn't believe

any of them were criminal of fences,
and that I'd clone nothing wrong,

otherwise he would not
have acquitted me.

Sir Cliff Richard is more used
to walking out on stage

than into a court room.

The singer claims the BBC
seriously invaded his privacy,

and he wants
very substantial damages.

I felt bad about it,
I said to the lawyers,

"How can I sue the BBC?
It's like suing Britain."

But I thought to myself, "These
people need to know that

"I'm serious about this, this was a
very serious nasty harmful thing

"you said about me."

Cliff Richard is one of
the outstanding Englishmen

of the 20th century. His persecution
has been one of the great scandals

of the 21st.
This must not happen again.

We must have anonymity
before charge.

When I got to court
on the first clay,

Paul Gambaccini arrived,
and he was beaming with a smile,

he just said,
"I've just come from the BBC,

"and all of them say
give them hell."

I couldn't give them hell,
but the judge did.

It's come out the way it has,

and I'm not just speaking
for myself.

this morning

emotional but the winner.

The judge came to a clear conclusion
that Sir Cliff's privacy rights

were not outweighed by the BBC's
rights to freedom of expression,

and that there did not exist a
public interest in identifying him.

I can't really answer too many
questions at the moment.

It's going to take a little while
for me to get over

the whole emotional factor,
and so I hope you'll forgive me.

I think I spent about £5 million,

and I think I got back 2.6 million,
2.8 million, something like that.

I sit here talking to you now,
my accuser is totally unknown,

I don't even know his name. They
tried to tell me, and I said,

"Please, I'm living my life now
because he's not real to me,

"so I don't have anybody to hate."

I hate the idea that people
can do this

to another innocent human being.

After I'd had my NFA, I learned that
my original accuser

was a serial unsuccessful accuser.

Drug abuser.
He'd had great problems.

At one point he's asked, "Well,
if it was so terrible

"with Mr Gambaccini,
why did you keep going back?"

And he said, "Well, cos if I stayed
home, my parents would lock me naked

"in the basement with a turkey."

I'm forbidden by law
to reveal his identity.

He does after all have anonymity
for life,

far more than I got.

Of course, the Metropolitan Police
never prosecuted

either of my patently
false accusers.

In other words, the Metropolitan
Police have no interest in truth.

The issue around false
or malicious allegations receives

a great deal of attention.

Most of the research out there
would suggest

the amount of malicious allegations

of sexual of fences are somewhere
between 1% and 5%.

At the most.
They are absolutely in the minority,

but they can do an incredible amount
of damage when they are made.

Not surprisingly, Paul is
fundamentally changed by

this experience. He's lost all faith
in the legal system.

It saddened me
seeing him being angry, being upset.

I still haven't watched his
Victoria Derbyshire interview.

What is the point
of interviewing me if you're

only going to give THEM airtime?
This is ridiculous.

All throughout the witch-hunt,

the BBC was on the side
of the wrongdoers.

I'm going to pause there.

Time has been a healer,
Paul is a lot better,

and he's much more like his old
self, but of course, things happen,

he's reminded of it, and he still
gets into rages at the injustices

that are still happening.

It is very easy to focus on
the negativity of Operation Yewtree,

but the positives far outweigh that.

It's changed attitudes,
no doubt about that.

I have no doubt that had
Savile not been exposed,

and the fallout from that,
that Harvey Weinstein,

that Epstein never would have
come out, the #Me Too movement.

I feel very proud
to have been part of that.

It highlighted a problem
of some celebrities

acting with impunity and thinking
that their crimes

would never be revealed,
but it also showed that,

when you had the volume of evidence
and the number of victims

for some of these men
that were being convicted,

they COULD end up in jail.

Yes, of course, there are people
who are found not guilty

or never prosecuted, there will be
people unfortunately

who become collateral damage.

It must be very difficult
for those people

to objectively see
the bigger picture,

but that's what this is about.

Operation Yewtree was one of
the greatest fiascos

in the history of British justice,
or should we say injustice.

It inverted the basic premise
of British justice,

innocent till proven guilty.
