passed each other.

We are connected

have been for quite some time,

and I believe like almost
the same duration

of our careers.

How old were you? 11?
-Yeah, Jodie Foster

on "Panic Room" got me

a mariachi band
for my 11th birthday,

so that's how I remember
when I started acting.

I was like, "Okay,
I did one movie before that."

-11 years old in the business,
finding success early on.

You know, I guess the easy
question is --

excited at the time,
or was it so much?

You know, like,
where were you at

with the understanding
of what was happening?

-I just wanted to, like,
hang out and make movies.

-Yeah.
-'Cause my parents did that,

and I wanted so badly
to just be a part of the crew.

-Okay.
-I wanted to make movies

so badly, and my mom was
a script supervisor,

and my dad was, like,
a stage manager

for forever, for my whole life.
-So you were in the business.

You grew up in the business.

-I grew up waiting
for my parents to come home

with little mini candy bars
from craft service

since I was, like,
you know, born,

and their jobs were something

that I could tell
they loved it so much

and that it seemed sort of odd

because everyone else's parents
were like, "Are you okay?

Like, your parents are never
really around."

I'm like, "I know my parents
better than your kids know you."

Like, I see them when I get up,

and I run to them at midnight
and I go, like,

"Dude, what did you do today?"

And they're like,
"Hey, Boomeister.

Well, let me tell
you about my day." -Stories.

-I loved the stories.
-Mm-hmm.

-And I was like,
"I don't want to do anything

other than be close to that."

And as a kiddo, obviously
you have to be an actor.

I couldn't have been
the prop guy.

I was, like, you know,
an 11-year-old.

-It's so crazy because
I just had a guest on

who said the opposite.

You know, they found
success later on.

But their problem was,
they said, with their parents,

it felt like they weren't there,
and there was a --

there was a hurt
because of the absence.

There was an understanding
because of the work

that was being done.
-Mm-hmm.

-But they were very vocal
about like, "Wow,

in that time, I felt like
I was missing the love."

In this case, you're like,
"No, dude,

the relationship that we had
was so dope

because I felt like I was a part
of what they were doing."

-I remember distinctly
when I was, like,

I think five years old
because it was kind of

when kindergarten was happening.
-That's a hell of a memory.

-Yeah.
-That's a hell of a memory.

-But my mom was, like,
in Thailand or something

for three months,

and I remember just, like,
hating this three-month period,

but being kind of like --
I don't know --

this sounds weird,
but, like, stoked for her,

couldn't wait for her
to come home.

I was like,
I had this one picture

that I still have of her,
like, on my nightstand.

And I guess for a five year old,

a three-month period away
from your mom is a big deal.

-Yeah, it's a lot.
-But it was filled with something else,

and it was filled with, like,
a certain amount of, like, love

and commitment to both me
and something that they,

you know, had passion for.
-That's a crazy understanding

at age five. I mean --
-I probably only see that

in retrospect,
but at the time, I was like,

"You're awesome and I love you
and I miss you."

And I was fine.
-That's dope as hell.

It's dope for you just to have
the logic,

of course, now,
'cause you're older,

but then the wherewithal
to just be supportive, right?

Let's go back to you now.

I mean, success is happening,
right?

You do your first movie.
Oh, my God, this is amazing.

But now there's a crazy talk
that's following you,

and people want
to work with you.

More movies are
starting to happen.

And one of the biggest things
come about, right?

This "Twilight" series.
Holy shit.

After this,
stardom really takes off.

What's your parents
feeling at this moment?

Like, you know, now, you know,
"Our daughter is everywhere.

We see her everywhere. This is
a business that we grew up in

and" -- not grew up in --
"that we raised our daughter in.

And, you know, we worked behind
the scenes for quite some time.

Wow. Our baby is -- Our baby is
fucking at the forefront of it."

Like, this is a big deal.

What was their conversations
with you about that?

-So you, like, mentioned, like,
that I seemed kind of like

I understood
what they were into,

and so that there was kind of
an understanding...

-Mm-hmm.
-...whatever, of their absence.

-But when I first, like, said
to my mom,

"Dude, I think I, like, want
to go on a couple auditions,"

she was like, "What?
You do not want to do that."

-Oh, wow. Okay.
-"It's gonna be awful."

-Okay.
-Because I was super shy

when I was little and, like,
not the obvious performer.

And I think that she worked
in an environment

in which she saw a lot of people
not have the greatest time

trying to be actors
as little kids. -Mm-hmm.

-And I was like --
I was in some, like,

Christmas performance-y
type thing.

And having lived in L.A.,
like, there was this --

this thing where it was like,
you could come learn

how to do auditions.
-Okay.

-And you had to pay like $3,000
to come learn

how to do an audition and then
maybe have an opportunity

to go do an audition.
-Okay.

And I was like,
"I want to do that."

And she was like,
"This is a total ripoff,

and also, like, you seem, like,
shy and weird

and like a total
backwards person.

Are you sure you
want to do that?"

-Mm-hmm.
-And I was like, "Yeah,

I definitely do,"
and so she was like,

"I'm taking
a bet on you right now,

so you have to pay me back
if it ever pays off.

But like, I believe in you.
And do you know what?

My money is on you, kid."
And I was like,

"This sounds like
a bullshit story."

-No, it doesn't.
-I was like, "Please,

I do want to try doing this."

-I think that's a great form
of parenting.

That's like --
it's a reverse mind fuck.

It's, "I'm going to support you,

but at the same time
I'm supporting you,

I'm telling you that
I'm investing in you."

-That's what she said.
She's like,

"I'll make an investment
in you," yeah.

-Yeah, I 1,000%
understand that...

-Yeah.
-...and relate.

I mean, mines wasn't
to that degree,

but my mom's investment
was believing

in the idea of me
doing standup comedy,

and she gave me a timeline
to figure out how to pay myself.

Like, "You got to figure out
how to make money.

If you don't do it
in this timeline,

well, then you have to follow

my blueprint, my roadmap."
-Right.

"Then, when I tell you
what the fuck to do, you do it."

-It was a contract,
'cause during the timeline,

she said, "I'm gonna take care
of your rent.

I'll pay for the things
that you need paid for.

I'm acting
as your support system."

-That is so beautiful

and so fucking sick...
-That's dope.

-...that she was, like,
able to do that.

-That's why I relate
to what you're saying.

So your mom invested in you.
She pays for the class.

You do it.
Of course you're pumped up

because you got the support
of your parents going into it.

-Yeah.
-You got bit by the bug.

You're there,
and it's exactly

what you thought it was,
or was it bullshit?

-I had to, like, audition for a
bunch of commercials and stuff,

and it was terrible, and I did
not do a very good job.

And then I got one movie
like a year into this process,

and I was totally ready
to be like, "Mom,

you don't have to keep
fucking driving me

all around Los Angeles
'cause your life

is more important than that,"
and I knew it then,

and I got my first job,
and it is absolutely

exactly what I wanted
it to be and everything.

I have the best time. Like,
I can't -- I can't believe

that I get to -- I cannot
understand that my job

is to just explore
my own strange interests

and, like, make stories
about them.

It's fucking crazy.
-Well, when did you --

but when is it --
when did it tap in, right?

Like, there's a certain part
or point in our careers

where you tap
into the understanding

of, "I'm really good."

-Probably has happened
a couple times.

-Okay.

-Like the first time
that I saw a director cry

because I was, like, feeling
something in a room,

I was like,
"This is an incredible feeling.

We're sharing this space,
and it's, like, contagious,"

and I'm 10 --

I think I was 9,
and this chick was like...

you know, I was doing service
to something

that meant a lot more to her

and also something
that I couldn't understand.

I got the scene
that I was doing,

but, like, the movie
is complicated,

and it is, like, very much
a movie for adults.

I have no idea -- I had no idea
what that movie was about then.

-Mm-hmm.
-But the thing of going like,

"I felt something," and then
this woman went, "Whoa,"

and we could share that,

I was like,
"This is -- I'm gonna chase this

for the rest of my life."
-Wow.

-And I knew I was, like,
"good at it,"

because it was just real
for us in that moment,

and no one could tell you
that we were wrong.

-That's huge.
My first audition was shit.

I remember the casting director
actually --

-This was, like, my 50th
audition. More, like, yeah.

-Then good. okay, good,
'cause that threw me.

I was about to say...
-In the hundreds actually,

to just correct myself.
-..."How talented are you?"

-No, but go on.
-The casting director

snatched the sides out my hand.

This is a true story,
by the way.

I'll never forget it.
I'm reading it, and it's so bad.

Like, I-I remember reading like
the stage direction, everything.

I'm calling out the words --

"And that's when...
you gonna be..."

Like, it's so bad.
-You're talking so loud.

-It's just bad, and I remember
the lady going, "Thank you."

And she actually took my sides.

By the way, I came there
with them.

I didn't get them in that room.
I bought them.

She took them out my hand
and was like, "Thank you,

that's it," and I was like,
"I could do it again." "No."

-"No."
-"No, you've given us enough.

Thank you."
I was like, "Okay. You sure?

because I can do it different
ways." "No, no, thank you."

-Yeah.
-That's it.

-I once had a director --

I think it was like
a Shakespeare adaptation,

and I'm not gonna mention
which one it was,

'cause that is Google-able
-Okay.

-She was like, "Do you
understand what you're saying?"

I was like, "Yeah, no."
[ Laughs ]

-I see.
-But actually, I think I did.

And I was like, "No?
Tell me?"

-And then they explained it
to you.

-I was like, "Well, I was just
doing something else,

but whatever."
-I have one of those where

I was in a movie
called "Fool's Gold."

See, you don't want
to say the things.

I'll say them.
I don't give a shit.

I was doing a movie called
"Fool's Gold,"

and the scene was
with Matthew McConaughey.

This is, like, one of my first
big movies.

And the word was "facade."
-Mm-hmm.

-Right?
I've never seen "facade"

written down.
-Yeah.

-I've never seen it.
I know what the word means.

-You know what the word is,
obviously.

-I know what it is,
but I've never seen it.

-So during the scene, you know,

we're going over sides,
and it's like, you know,

it's like the rehearsals
before we go shoot.

And I keep saying "fa-kade."

I'm like, "Look,
I don't care, man.

This whole thing is a fa-kade,

And I keep saying it.
-And they're like,

"This is the funniest joke
in the fucking movie."

-I keep saying it with
more passion every time.

"It's a fa-kade."
And they finally stop.

And the director was like,
"Kevin, come here for a second.

Let me just talk to you."

He, like, pulls me over
to the side,

and he asks me -- he's like,
"Just read it again.

Let me just hear you read it."
I was like, "Yeah, sure."

You know, I'm young, ambitious.
I'm gonna give it to you better.

I do it again,
and I'm so, so hype about it.

-Committed.
-I'm like, "This whole thing

is a -- This whole thing
is a -- is a -- is a fa-kade."

And I'm saying it
with more passion

'cause I want him to know
that I'm ready.

And he was like, "The word...

The word is 'facade.'"

And I wasn't embarrassed at all.
That's a good thing.

Like, ignorance sometimes is
best 'cause I was like, "Cool."

He was like,
"It's 'facade.'"

-I just went back,
and I just read it,

and I didn't even --
I remember Matthew, like,

looking at me, and I was like,

I was saying it because I come
from a school of...

I was like, "It seems like
the scene is going well."

or admirable and, like,
endearing

than having someone be like,

I mean, like, I love that.

and holding on
to a high level of success

from said age to adulthood,

well, you know, it's not many
that make it through that wave.

A lot fall off
somewhere along the lines.

As a person that is aware,
you're not fucking blind to it.

You see it. You've seen
the good, the bad, the ugly.

Was that ever in the back
of your head

as you were, like,
growing up in the business?

Was it a thing of, "Okay,
let me make sure

to do certain things right.

Let me try to avoid
certain pitfalls.

Let me make sure
that I steer correctly"?

Or were you kind of oblivious
to that world?

-I think, like --
I think, genuinely,

because I started so young
and it was kind of such a shock

that I ever got a job...
-Mm-hmm.

-...and that it was like --
I don't know.

I just -- I kind of --
there's no way to say this,

and there's no way to say this
without being like,

"This is wild and crazy,
and I'm so lucky,"

but I never stopped working.
-Okay.

-And I just kind of kept
getting, like, consistent,

independent movies
here and there.

And so I always thought
I would be able to,

like, find --
even if it was stepping down

and doing something
on production

and, like, finding
the weird sort of,

like, art-department group
that you're like, "Okay."

-Okay.
-I don't know.

I think for me, movies are about
finding, like, tribes

and being like,
"This is my fucking homey,

and we're gonna do something
honest together."

-Okay.
-If I wasn't able to be an actor

forever, that would be a bummer.
-Okay.

-But I definitely would have
pivoted and been like,

"I know that I want to do this,
though."

Like, my brother's a grip.

I would have been like,
"Can I come hang out?"

-Mmm.
-And I would have been like,

"Fuck this. I want to be
in the art department instead."

But you know what I mean?
-That's also

where you were raised in.
Like, you come from that.

-Yeah, I would have just
done the same thing, yeah.

Where's your love for the world
of entertainment now?

Are you in bliss about it still?

Is there still the same fire
in you that it was back then?

Or, you know,
as you've gotten older,

it's changed a little bit?

Has it altered in some way,
or, you know,

is it just a different approach
to the world, to the craft?

-Um, it's funny, 'cause
I thought you were gonna,

like, change the subject,
and I was like,

"I do think that even
if I wasn't gonna not" --

well, let me put in four more
double negatives.

If I wasn't gonna be an actor
and I had to, like,

do something else on production,
I could see such a happy life

for myself and, like,
being super fulfilled.

-But I love...

I love how strange

and unpredictable
the life of an actor is.

And I don't think of myself
necessarily as a performer

'cause it's fucking hard
for me to do it.

-Mm-hmm.
-It's always about, like,

finding that one combination
of people

and the right story to just
sort of, like, spark something.

I don't think that --
I don't know.

Maybe this is my total
constructed personal reality

that is really...just my own.

-And it could just be blown out
the window in 5 minutes.

But I don't think
I would ever stop doing this.

I would find someone
to do it with.

Like, I'd be like, "Dude,
we should, like, do a scene.

I don't fucking know. I'll film
it on my -- on my iPhone."

-So that means that you're still
on a high about it.

I feel I've been given somewhere

The most challenging thing
that's presented yourself

from the world of acting --

the fucking hype
and height of "Twilight"

and what that presented, right?

Was there ever a thing or moment
where it was like, "Okay,

well, shit, this can't go down"?

I don't think
it gets bigger for some

because the lights,
camera, and attention

the came for that
for a teenager --

it's fucking lot.

Your life gets flipped
upside down.

-Mm-hmm.
-All of a sudden,

paparazzi is following you

when you normally would
just be taking a normal walk.

But now it's different.
That's what I was getting at.

Like, that's the part...
-Yeah.

-...that's like, "Oh, shit."
-The first time I was ever

photographed by a paparazzi,
I was sitting,

smoking a bowl
with my ex-boyfriend and my dog

on my parents' porch,

and my ex-boyfriend's family,
who live in Staten Island,

were like, "What is this?!"

Like what --
and I was like, "Oh, no."

-Yeah.
-I guess this movie's

gonna be like, huge.
-Yeah. Yeah.

-And I'd just been
doing that for a long time.

-Yeah. [ Laughs ]
-And, um...

so, yeah, actually,
in that moment, I was like,

"Oh, this is like
a different type of movie."

And like, there's no way to,
like, fully understand that

from everyone's perspectives
because that doesn't exist.

So you can really only have
your own experience with it...

-Mm-hmm.
-...and try and kind of just...

I mean, look,
like, it's so nice to have --

it's so nice to have such a long
experience focusing on one thing

'cause you can really
indulge in it

and become obsessed with it,
which I love to do.

And I guess the whole thing
about, like, canceling out noise

and not paying attention
to people photographing you

smoking weed on your porch with
your dog and your ex-boyfriend

is, like, kind of a thing,
but also, we did get to make

a pretty cool movie.

to where I was like,

like, everything is a thing.

Nothing is not a thing.

-So there was a period of time

where I had
to really grow to understand,

"This is what it's going to be,

What'd I do?
I didn't even do shit?"

It was like that.
It was a constant thing of that.

-I think, like, that was
my biggest thing is being like,

Whatever experience
someone's having with you

is their perception of you
in that moment,

from whatever they've gathered,
from whatever you've put out.

And so, like, even if it doesn't
jive with what you are up to,

you're like, "Oh, no!
It's my fault."

Like, I didn't feel --
I don't know.

I wasn't honest in that moment
or I didn't convey myself --

you have to just not care.
It's not "not care."

It's the opposite of "not care."

You have to just sort of float
with that shit and be like,

"Have it. Have your experience
with my experience,

but my experience is mine.
But you have your experience..."

-How did you get that?
-Years, man.

Like so long,
I was just like, "How" --

I can't -- I can't have
a conversation

with, like, the whole world
right now.

I'm not capable of doing that.

-But then you calm the fuck
down, and you are.

just not trying to control

the effect that you've had
on people, but just...

allow them to take from you

whatever
they will take from you.

and control your experience,"
like, I would do a bad job,

and I would feel weird

If you're going somewhere,

people might
get "weird with you."

But also it feels good when

and the jobs that they had,

of what was presented to you.

And now, as you've done it,

I'd still want to be
in this thing of creative."

of your environment.

But I like it when I get
to see somebody else

have that same thing.

I like to see that fire

that ignites the the work,
the want.

-It's one of the reasons work
is able to be made, too,

because we can't, like,

But unless you're able
to externalize it

and make it touch
other people's weird desires

to make a thing,
you can never do it alone.

And so, like, even if you're,
like, you know,

completely outside of yourself
and able to project

and, like you, be somebody
who's like, loud and out

and in charge and whatever,

you can then take all these
different types of people

and put them together,
and they can help each other

make something really loud,

even if, like, every person
involved isn't.

That's why you get
the weirdest story.

That's why movies get to either,
like, be the most sort of

"scream from the tippy-top
of every balcony" type thing,

or it can be the most quiet,
understated statement

that no one
could ever say in person,

but the only way they could
have said it was in a movie.

I had a -- I had a small part --
and this is just the first thing

that came to my head
'cause there's probably

but I played De Niro's daughter

in a movie.

And I was only in it
for, like, 5 minutes,

but he was so nice to me,
and it's a cool movie,

but, like, it wasn't --
it wasn't something

that I even really, like,
remember.

Like I was --
I was barely in it.

But, like, in retrospect,
I'm like,

"You did get to work
with De Niro, dude."

And, like, in that moment,
he was shy and nervous,

and he was like -- I'm not gonna
do a De Niro impression, but --

we were doing a movie

called "Grudge Match."

This is when things
are starting to go.

I'm about to work
with Robert De Niro...

-Yeah.

Okay.
-[ Laughs ]

-Oh, let me make sure
I'm prepared.

Okay, I'm going the day before.

I'm going over my lines.

This is how big of a deal.

You see my tone dropped?
-Yeah, suddenly you're, like,

talking just way down like this.

Like, this is a big deal.

I show up to set, man,
and I'll never forget.

And I get there,
and Sylvester Stallone --

him and Robert --
they're like -- they're --

I call -- Bobby,
That's what they call him.

-Right, right, right.
-Sylvester Stallone and Bobby,

they're on set,
and they're talking.

And I get there, and I'm like,
"Hey, wow. Hey, guys.

You know, this is --
this is crazy."

Very nice. "Hey, hey, man."
Very funny guy. Very nice to me.

First scene -- first scene,
we do it, and I'm so excited

'cause I nailed it, right?

This is -- I'm working
with the two legends.

Like, this is a big deal.
This is a big deal, man.

A big deal.
Fuck, yeah.

After the scene,
I go over to talk to him,

and you know,
I just want to talk.

You know, Robert De Niro was
sitting in this chair like this

and I couldn't -- I couldn't
see him from, like, you know,

from the back 'cause
he's sitting in the chair.

So I'm behind him. I just
see him sitting like this.

And I was like, "Hey, man,
you know, I just want to say

this is such a big deal,
like, for me to be doing this,"

and he's not moving.
He's not doing anything.

And I, like, come around,
and he was asleep.

-[ Laughs ]
-He was asleep.

He didn't hear shit I said.

I poured out my heart
for like 20 seconds,

and he woke up, and he's like,
"I'm sorry, kid.

What did you say?"
-Sorry, what?

-I was like, "Nevermind.
I'll just tell you later."

But he was the nicest guy.
He was so warm, so welcoming.

-God, I know exactly
how I would film that.

-So you already got a vision.
-It starts on you.

And it's just you, like,

the first three sentences
of what that is.

And so you just want to know
what this guy's thinking.

-"Gee whiz, Mr. De Niro."
-And the whole time,

you just have his shoulder
a little bit dirty...

-You're shooting it dirty.
-...over the front -- exactly.

And you just see, like,
you're right there,

and you're about to walk over.

You take your last little
step forward at the very end,

and then he's like...

-[ Snoring ]
-[ Laughs ]

-He was sleeping, but he woke up
so fast, was so cool.

-He's a gracious,

insanely beautiful -- yeah, no.
-Very.

-Very. I just remember --
I remember they never made me

feel like I was lesser than.

Right? Like, they never
made me feel like --

-And they could have.
-Absolutely.

-I'm kidding.
-But no, it's the truth.

Like, this is like, you know,
I mean, I don't know

what movie this was that I did,
but this is

such a huge deal for me,
but to them at the time,

you know,
they're doing another movie.

They could have not
wanted to talk.

They could have been
in their own space, own head.

But they made me feel like
I was a part of the cast.

-Yeah.
-That was one of the biggest

things for me,
seeing people at that level --

-Have you had someone get
super stoked around you

and you've had to be like, "Oh,
my God, I'm gonna make sure

that this is, like,
a good experience,

even though maybe
I'm, like, busy in this moment,

but you're like, "Hey,
I fucking see

that you're having, like,
a thing and hi."

-I've never -- I've never --
yes.

But I've never been, like,
offset by it.

Like I've had it,
but I can say I've also --

I've never had a bad experience
with an actor or actress.

Like never --
I've never in my career

had a bad experience
with an actor or actress.

Like, asshole or -- never.
-Right.

-Not one. Have you ever had
a bad experience

where you felt like, "Oh,
these people are assholes?"

You don't have to say names.
-Oh, my God, I've had so many.

I've had an unbelievable amount.
-That's a great segue.

90% of my interactions
with the business."

-I hate everyone.
-Yes. You feel like --

-I don't.
-You feel like you've had a lot.

You feel like you've had
a shitload of them, though?

I've totally worked with people
that have been

either, "A," disappointing,
because maybe I, like, thought

they were gonna be cooler,
or that have just been

bafflingly not nice,
and fuck nice -- who cares?

Just, like, not taking
from this experience

what they could be taking
and therefore kind of just

up their own asses,
and, like, "not nice" -- fine,

but, like, more importantly,
not here with us.

-And that's, like, on them.

I could do well with that.

I'm not gonna -- I don't think

I could respond well
to the person that's just not --

-That's good. You're an honest,
present, genuine actor.

our energy is contagious.

So I feel like the people,
you know, on set

feed off of what
you and I put out.

I'm super sensitive, too,

so, like, I get infuriated.
It's not good.

I have, like, the best stories
that I can't really tell.

-It's a safe haven,

It's a show built off
of great dialogue

and happy conversation
and good information.

I think, more importantly,
when you just say to me,

"Well, I don't do well
with that either,

and I've had those moments,"

you know, it's unfortunate,

but now and knowing
what that does --

-You've never had one moment
where you've been like,

"Dude, come on, man.
Like, be here with me"?

-I have never in my career...

-...experienced a bad moment
with an actor or actress.

-And if bad moment

would have presented itself,

a couple directors
that got stressed one time.

I was like,

I'm the guy to state the obvious

and there's an immediate
understanding of,

not lacking for, like, intensity
or passion or be like --

I was about to yell really loud,

if something goes wrong

I've worked with so many people
that seem

to not like their jobs
very much,

and they sort of
get off on like,

"Oh, this is so hard,

people love to complain
about everything,

and not just people
in the business,

There is a certain type of
person that just sort of, like,

becomes a snowball
rolling down a hill

and gets bigger
and bigger and bigger.

And then there are people
that are, like, full of rocks.

It's just like, "You
shouldn't have ever been thrown down this hill.

Like, get out of this business
immediately."

It's so easy to find
the difference

between those two people.
-Mm-hmm.

-Like, you either like it,
or you don't.

And that's from PAs,
fucking ADs,

actors, directors, producers,
studio executives.

Unless you love it,
you're gonna be a jerk.

Period.
That's the way it is.

And also, your life is gonna be,
like, not good for you.

Like, I think, like, the quality
of life is everything.

And unless you can go home
every single day happy,

even if it rained all over you,

that's obviously, like --
that's the way to go.

by your passion

in what you do

and why you want to continue
to do what you do.

how amazing it is to have that.
