where I want to start

because there's so much
that I want to know.

I think that your career
is evolving.

You seem to be more comfortable,

more confident in today's time
in your career.

So I want to go before here.

I want to go
beginning stages of stand-up,

and I want to find out how

the "SNL" opportunity came
about, because I never knew.

I never knew how you actually
transitioned to "SNL."

-Oh, I got very lucky.

I was I was doing stand-up

for like three, four years
in the city.

And I met Amy Schumer.

And she let me, like,

open for her on the road
for a little bit.

She was like, "I'm doing
this movie 'Trainwreck.'

I'll see if I can get you,
like, a part in it."

And I have like a little,
like, cameo,

and I got to hang
with Bill Hader and Judd Apatow.

And then when I got home
the next day, my agent called me

and said, "Bill Hader
recommended you for 'SNL.'"

-Really?
-And I was like,
"Why the fuck would he do that?"

I was terrified.

-How old were you at the time?
-I was like 19 or 20.

Or about to be 20.
And I was like, "Holy shit."

And then, yeah, 'cause
I don't really do characters

or anything like that,
so I was like

I guess maybe I could be
a writer or something.

And then when you do stand-up --
I did stand-up,

and when you audition for "SNL,"
there's no audience.

It's just like four people.
You've auditioned.

-Yes, you have Lorne,
and you have three people.

-And, like, Higgins.
-Yeah.

-And they're in the pitch black,
so you can't see their faces.

And you're doing
like a five, six-minute bit,

and occasionally
you'll hear, like, a...

-"Huh."
-Yeah.

And then a guy
will come out and be like,

"All right, that was great.
Good luck."

And then you just leave.
So I had no idea.

-So you did stand-up.

Your "SNL" audition
was you doing five?

-Yeah, I was just talking about,
like, my mom

because I was living
with my mom and stuff.

So I was just doing jokes
like that, so I was like,

there's no fucking way
that I would get this.

-I remember from the
conversations around your name

when you got it,
and I was like, "He's a comic.

I know he was a comic,

but I didn't know he did
characters and stuff,"

so now you telling me that...

What did "SNL" ultimately become
in those years and being there?

-I don't think I figured it out,
really.

I think me and Lorne figured
it out like two years ago,

like how I could work
on the show,

which is like now
I know my spot,

which is, you know,
a few things here and there,

some rap video or some pretape,
and an "Update."

So, like, that's my role now.
-Okay.

-But we really didn't know
because I just had stand-up bits

and I couldn't do characters
or anything like that.

So at first I was like,
oh, fuck,

I'll, like,
get to be here for a year,

I'll get fired, but, like,
I still got to do that,

and I'll have that credit,

and then I could write
for, like, whatever,

Cartoon Network show.

I'll just be like --
I'll be able to work at least.

-But when you say, like,
all right,

"We figured it
out two years ago."

So the years before that, we're
talking about a seven-year run.

So, the five previous to that,
are you constantly --

are you throwing things
at the fire?

Because "SNL," it's a lot of,
"Okay, let's write, let's pitch,

and let's see what people take
and then what they don't."

It's like, "Damn, they didn't.
They didn't take."

-There was a few writers there
that, like, were very helpful,

like this guy Streeter Seidell
and Mikey Day.

They would always
look out for me

and, like, try any week
to try a sketch with me.

Once in a while
they would hit,

but, like, I never thought
I would be around

that long at the show.

And like, you know,

you there are people
you can collaborate with

and pitch stuff,
but if you're not --

I'm not like a --
what the fuck is that?

Like a Groundlings
sketch-comedy guy.

They all are.

So, they have that type of --
like how comics can hang.

It's like a little different.

So I pretty much
didn't really --

like, I don't know how
to write a sketch,

so I just pretty much watched
the best people

at that job do that
with, like, zero experience.

-And then
you eventually caught on.

-Yeah, eventually.
-It got contagious.

-Yeah.
It's really fun.

It's like a fun world to, like,
pretend and stuff,

but, like, yeah,
it took a while.

-Do you feel like you're now
finally getting a grasp

on this thing
called entertainment?

-I have no idea what the fuck
is going on ever.

I just -- like, you're so --

your schedule,
I would have a panic attack.

But I just get into cars

and then get out
and then do what they say

and then get back into the car
and then go home.

But I feel like I did find
some sort of a playing field

where it became my thing,

but now I feel like I'm at
a place where the whole, like,

"I'm not supposed to be here"
type of, like --

you know, just downplaying
everything so hard.

Like, it's cool to be
self-deprecating.

I love it.
It's, like, my thing.

But now I'm at a place where
I'll do other shows,

and, like, you come in and they
have stuff written for you,

and all the dialogue is like,
"I'm a big fucking idiot.

Hey, let's smoke a doobie.

Oh, yeah!"

And I'm like...

Every joke is just like,

"Well, you know me.
I'm a big fucking idiot."

So I'm just like -- I'm at
this place now where I'm like,

"Yes, I am, but, like, I do --
I say that.

I say that."
-"You can't say that for me."

-In a roast setting,
It's different.

It's like
that's what the whole game is.

You roast each other.

But on a professional setting,
it's like,

"Oh, no," I'm like...

'Cause I'm not really fond
of myself very much,

but on some level I'm like,

"I've done, like,
a lot of shit."

You know what I mean?

I'm not like
the big fucking dummy.

-No.
-Every impression of me
is like, "Err!"

And I'm just like,
"Who is that?"

-You're very clever
in your approach to your craft.

So I can understand
when you're like,

"Yeah,
but now that I'm doing stuff

and I'm going to step
into the stuff,

the portrayal of what
they see me as..."

-Right.
Which is why, you know,
just changing gears,

when you talk about
"The King of Staten Island."

Well, for me, that was
your coming-out party.

-Thanks.

That was, "Oh, man,
Pete Davidson's fucking real."

He's talented. He can act.
He had charm.

You actually cared
about the character.

And then for Judd Apatow
to attach himself to you

and say, "I want to be the
producer of said film,

I want to make sure that
this film has all the pieces

and connective tissue
that it needs to be a success,"

I mean, these are things
that all go to you.

So I think at some point in time
you got to see that go,

"Okay, it's all starting
to shape up."

-Yeah, I'm trying to find
a healthy balance between,

like, just having
a little bit --

I wish I had your confidence.

Your confidence is sick.

-Dude, if I had your confidence,
oh, my God.

-I'm confident as hell.
-It's so -- it's sick.

Because you're just like --
everything you say,

you're just like, "Yeah!
Fuck yeah!"

So, like, I'm trying to find
that healthy balance

between, like, you know,

"Ooh, that's nice,
he's confident,"

and not like, "Eww,"
you know,

but still has like
some sort of humbleness.

Because I think I'll always be

sort of humble
and self-deprecating,

but I don't want people to think
I'm a fucking idiot.

-For you, though,
here's the question.

It's like, well,
now with the success,

now with the bright light
being a little different,

you know, at one point in time
you were talking about acting

isn't that important to you,
just comedy.

You wanted to just do comedy.
"I'm focusing on comedy."

Is that still the case now

or is that door to acting
open a little more?

-I'm starting to, like,
really enjoy acting.

But also back to what you said
about the "SNL" stamp.

It's like I love the show,
love Lorne, love everyone there,

but it's like it does stay.

It's like very, you know --
it's like the main source

of where everything else
comes out of.

But it's like
there's also that point,

it's like,
"Am I staying too long?"

It's like, "I do love it here,
and I'm very comfortable here."

But I'm like, "Is that

how I want to be is just be
comfortable and chill?"

Because I want to do other shit.

-You said, you know,
"There's more that I want to do.

Do I just want to do this?"
right?

When you look around,
there's a lot of cast members

that have been there
for a long time.

Was that ever
a conversation between you guys?

Were you guys that close
to where you kind of, you know,

shared the thought
of "our future,

what we're thinking about,
is this too long or too short?"

-I have that
kind of conversation

with, like, Che and Colin

because they're stand-ups
as well.

But, like, what they do
on the show

is kind of ideal
for a stand-up,

which is like jokes
for 20 minutes.

It's awesome.

-But I feel like your writing
is multiple tricks too, though.

-Right.
-I feel like you can't take away

the idea
of what writing becomes, right?

So even if it's not a trick
for you,

you still develop for others,
even if it's not,

you know what I mean,
the biggest and best,

it can still be utilized
here or there,

and I think
even as you're talking about

progression in stand-up,
well, that's written material.

You're talking about doing
movies or not doing movies.

You're still writing material.

Our downtime can be some of the
most productive time ever

if we choose
to utilize it correctly.

Because I don't think there's
a better creative mind, Pete.

I don't think that there's --

I will argue and say that
a stand-up comic's

creative-excitement mind,

I will put it up
because anybody's.

-It's some wacky shit.

-If you're excited?
-Yeah.

-If you're excited
about something,

and you say, "Oh, my God,"

and you're gonna sit down
and do it,

I don't think that
there's a better operating...

-Also just for advice
or just like any --

comics have given me
the best advice, like, ever.

-Who are some of your go-tos?

-I mean, for like --
like, we're friends.

I wouldn't be like,
"That's my best friend."

Like, we talk and he's always
been there for me, both of them.

But, like, I call --
any big decision,

I go with Sandler
and Chappelle.
-Okay.

-Because they've seen it all
and been in every position.

And I'm just like,
"What the fuck do you do?"

-Both great guys, too.

-And for, like, other shit,
you're incredible for,

which I think is, like,
super commendable,

is, like, you're a comic star

where it's like
you're a star in the tabloids,

but you've managed
to make your work

more loud than the tabloids.

-Does the tabloid shit

I don't mind.

I know what it comes with.

I totally get it because
whatever I get to do is sick.

So, like, if that's all I have
to deal with, like, whatever.

But, like,
I would like them to be like,

very few friends growing up,

my childhood was not great.

dad passed early,

you know, single mom,
like, new sister.

did not handle it great.

two, three years old when it --

so it was just like
a fucking nightmare.

So, like, my family
was just great the whole time.

They were really -- and they
were super supportive of me

trying stand-up,
because they were like,

So, definitely a family guy.

My favorite thing ever,
which I have yet to achieve,

is I want to have a kid.

And so it's like super corny,
but I just, like --

It's the best goddamn thing
you can do in life.

It would be so fun
to dress up little dude, like --

it's just like I'm so excited
for, like, that chapter.

So, like, that's kind of
what I'm just preparing for now

is trying to be, like,

as good as a dude
and develop and get better,

so when that happens,
it's just easier.

I think about this all the time.

You know, I've heard you talk
about your father.

You know, I know how
your dad passed away in 9/11.

You know, you've always had
a dark side of humor towards it,

which is a mechanism
for dealing with it.

You know, I was the same way
with my dad

and his drug addiction,

how I dealt with it,
how I talked about it,

my approach to making
other people laugh at it

almost acted
as a calm for me, right?

That acted as my therapy.

But also, you know,
it helped me.

His ups and downs kind of showed
me the road not to go down,

especially when you're talking
about being a parent.

Yeah, I'm still gonna
bump my head.

I'm still gonna make mistakes.

-If everything was all peachy
at home, Kevin,

you wouldn't be here.

-I tell my friends that
all the time.

I'm like, "If my childhood
was fine,

I'd probably be
a construction worker

in Staten Island
and be the happiest guy ever."

But that weird shit
that it does to you

made me love comedy.

I started -- when my dad
and I just started watching --

the first movie I bought
when my dad died --

Eddie Murphy, "Delirious."

We were in an FYE,
me and my mom.

And I loved Eddie Murphy
because, like, "Shrek."

So I was like, "Oh, this is an
Eddie Murphy movie

I never saw before."

She was like, "Get it."
She had no idea.

So we had a DVD player
in the car, and I was like,

"I want to watch it
on the way home."

She's like, "Absolutely."

So I put it in
and she just hears, like,

"I don't want nobody
looking at my ass."

Like, "Fucking suck my dick,
motherfuck,"

like, all this shit.

And she's like, "Turn that off!"

And I was like,
"It's so funny, Mom.

Eddie Murphy's my favorite.

You know what's crazy?

Talking about Eminem,
and then it goes full circle,

one of your best goddamn
preshows on "SNL"

was your parody of Eminem.

And did he reach out to you
after that?

I, like, heard from his camp

They were talking.

Because we got him
for one of the videos.

We did two of them.

And then they set up a call,

you can overlook
the progression of big

because it starts
to happen so fast.

Those dots start
to connect so fast.

And you look back and it's like,

The name is starting
to mean something.

The name is starting to come
with a certain type of quality

and demand
a certain type of attention."

I want to talk now, man --

I want to shift gears
a little bit, right?

We're spending
a lot more time in L.A., right?

So, what does the "do more" side
of it look like now?

Like, what does that mean?

Is that Pete
looking to create and do more?

Are you looking to do it,

or are you looking for
the opportunities?

-Well, you know, kind of both.

Like, I think, for some reason,

there's zero
big-budget comedies anymore.

-Especially now.

-Yeah, it's like one
or two a year,

which is super confusing
because my whole childhood

was like,
"'Hangover' is coming out,"

or like, you know, fucking
"Harold & Kumar" or "Jackass."

It was all, like, crazy.

And they're so small
and few in between,

and especially the good ones.

So anything like that,

me and my friends
are gonna write

if we're interested
in a topic.

And anything
that we could go out for

have been the most fun.

I don't know if you feel
this way,

but like after like your job
is like being "funny" and shit,

the dramatic stuff
is so fun.

I have so much fun.
I never feel better.

Like, stand-up
is always like my favorite.

Like, nothing will ever --

But, like,
serious acting is very close.

Like, it's such
a different thing for me

and I really enjoy it.
-Can let loose.

So while they're like --

if it's happening
for the next couple --

I'm like -- "I'll do them."

what I'm finding now, man,

so many people are throwing

so many different things
at the table,

but they're all creating
the things they feel

that the business wants.

It's like, you remember
that point in time

where you would go out
for auditions

and everything would say
the same thing?

"This is like --
it's like 'Beverly Hills Cop,'

but we're looking for
the next version of Eddie."

It's like, "Why y'all
doing that again?"

It's like the remaking
of the remake.

And you start to figure out
that the excited creative,

well, it's only
what's being presented.

So we're thinking outside
the box

where we can live
and play all day, man.

-The thing that I remember
the most ever in my life

is where I was the first time

I saw Tom Cruise
in "Tropic Thunder."

And I was like, "Holy --

this is the fucking greatest,
funniest thing."

-It's possibly one of the --

I would say
it's in my top three.

-Like, surprise in a movie?
My fucking head exploded,

And I was just like, "Wow,
Tom Cruise, a serious actor,

is, like, having fun,

like, being a silly,
like, fat, dumb idiot."

Like, it was just so nice
to see him,

you know, not be leading man,
like, you know, cool guy.

Like, it was just such a cool,
different thing.

And I think, like, that's really
appealing, like, for people

to go outside their comfort zone
and, like, succeed.

You were talking about kids,
right?

Of course when talking
about kids,

you got to attach it
to relationships.

the people

that you're involved with.

I want to know about
the eyesight

for a relationship.

Is this a priority now?

Since I was a little kid.
I was like --

since my dad died,
I was like,

"Oh, I can't wait to have a kid.

And like, again, I don't like
saying corny shit like --

the reasoning was
because I was like,

"I don't want a kid to ever
feel like how I feel right now."

So, like, just to be --

like, wasn't his fault
he passed away,

but just to be there

so that someone
doesn't have to feel like that.

And I've just been very excited
to do that for someone.

-Is it the idea of marriage
with the kid or just --

I hope it goes.

Did you have to go to therapy?

-I was in therapy.

everybody has it.

But when I was like six,
they were like, "You have ADD."

So I started seeing
a therapist with the family

and then I got better.

And then like a month later,
my dad died, and they were like,

"Well, welcome back to therapy."

So I've been in therapy
since I'm seven.

Like, at least twice a week
for 21 years.

So I'm at a point
where I'm like

sometimes it's really nice.

I go back and forth
where I'm like,

"This is really great
to talk to somebody.

And another time I'm like,
"Why the fuck --

I have homies.
They give me better advice."

But, you know,
when you deal with,

like, mental health stuff
and you have mental health stuff

and people are aware that
you have mental health stuff,

I always want to make sure
I'm doing everything I can

that you can do
to better that situation.

-Has your circle changed?

-My circle has changed
drastically.

I've learned so much
in the last two, three years.

Like, you know,
you just learn someone's a user,

someone is pretending
to be your best friend,

but really has
an ulterior motive.

Or, you know, this person's
only in it for this.

And, you know, it sucks.
It's really sad.

Like, 'cause you really care
about these people.

And then now I'm at a place
where I'm like,

okay, I got my four or five
and, like, we're good.

-What does your downtime
look like?

What does Pete Davidson
do to shut off?

-I'm a fucking loser.
