and the children, what they go through.

She, you know, gave us an article to read
about the numbers of children

with incarcerated parents.
I can't remember the exact number

but it's-- it's more than you think.

You know, there's a lot more,
you know, um,

children with incarcerated parents
than you think, so.

That's a pretty interesting class.

[Muhammad] I see the most change happening
in the world through the next generation.

Now more than ever
do we need our athletes,

we need our entrepreneurs,
our celebrities,

everybody coming to those spaces
so we can just learn together

and begin to find the solutions
to solve the social ills

in our own communities.

[Makur] It's like the whole course,

that's what Professor Muhammad
lectures us about.

Basically, you know, children
of incarcerated parents,

what they go through and what they have
to deal with to go see their parent

in whatever jail they're in.

Or, you know, their thought process, um,
of having a parent incarcerated.

It's not about playing the center
and you're passing the ball.

It's not about any
of those sort of components.

It is about your community
that's watching.

It is about your village that's watching.

And the liberation that happens

when I see you going up
and down that court,

knowing that you're going up
and down a court in a university.

At the end of the day, the service,
by just coming to an HBCU,

it literally breaks the school
to prison pipeline.

Why? Because when you come
to this university

there are a hundred young Black boys
and girls

that are also going to follow you,

and that means they're not following
the pathway to prison.

Right? This is not just an athlete.

This is an individual
that has a clear understanding

of where he's trying to go.

So, you have this task now.

You have a five-star recruit, you have all
your other players on the team.

And you're trying
to get this basketball program

back to the NCAA tournament.

The last time they're
in the tournament was

when you were in the tournament. When--
When Duke won the national title in 1992.

you know, you've said since 1992,

28 years of, uh, non-winning basketball.

and put our best foot forward
and continue to take, you know,

small steps every day.

I talked to the guys yesterday,
we worked for about an hour.

And afterwards, I--

I asked all of the guys that just came
off the COVID protocol, "How do you feel?"

And consistent, it was a four or a five.

It's never easy being an athletic trainer
because an athletic trainer's job is

to pump the brakes.

Nobody wants to be the no-man.

But, uh, you know, they are all human.

They are humans to me.

Not just athletes. They are young men.

And, uh, they have the world
and their lives ahead of them.

This basketball stuff is gonna end.

And I always keep that in my mind
when I make decisions to return to play.

I recognize my role with these young men.

And I take it very seriously.

[Blakeney] You gotta do what you gotta do.

And if you're not flexible,
you're gonna be stagnant.

And if you're stagnant, you're losing.

If you wanna do certain things you have
to be creative, flexible,

thinking outside the box, looking
at things a little bit differently

than probably the next guy beside you.

Um, the game tomorrow was canceled, so--

what the season's gonna look like.

I really don't.

And those are things
that we're gonna take a look at

and make the best decision
with your health and well-being in mind.
