In this lesson.

I'm going to show you
how to replace a background in Photoshop.

Most are going to show you how
to put a logo onto clothing in Photoshop.

And finally,

how to add a drop shadow in Photoshop
and how to do some nice lighting effects.

Let's get started.

All right.

Next, we're going to go to File Open.

We're going to go to 13

logos and backgrounds.

And for this,
we're actually opening a JPEG

that I got off of Unsplash.

And the first thing I want to do
is separate him from the background.

Now, in this case,
we have a very obvious background.

So probably select
subject is going to do a good job.

Let's see how it does

Oh, my God.

I can't believe I missed this. All right.

Instead of using select subject,
I'm going to use select color range

So select color

range allows you to select the color range
in an image.

So, for example, if I wanted to select
this jeans, I would go down here.

I could hold shift to add more colors
into that color range.

And then I can adjust the fuzziness,
meaning

how light it's tolerance
in terms of selection.

And then the range is how far out
from the point that I selected.

Is it going to increase that selection?

You can also do localized clusters.

So if I did localized clusters,
I would have to go and select this area to

I can select in here
or I can select in the image itself.

But I have to hold down shift
if I'm going to add to the selection.

You can also detect faces.

That's something they added recently.

Nice little feature.

I've never used it personally,

but in this case,
we're going to turn it off

and I'm just going to select this
yellow background

We can increase increase

our range quite a bit here.

And let's increase the fuzziness

until we see parts of him being selected,
which I don't want

right around there.

And let's hit. Okay.

All right.

Next, let's do select inverse.

So we want to select him,
not the background

And then we're going to do
select and mask.

And you can see it's done
a pretty awesome job.

I may want to do is just zoom in here
and with my edge

to hit the edges of the hair here

And let's turn on smart

radius
at that maybe two pixels and let's hit.

Okay,

And we're going to do a new layer

and add a mask

And next, what I want to do

is I want to recraft the image,
make it a bit

a bit larger so that I have more room
to put a new background in here.

So I'm going to hit C for crop.

Let's start moving this.

I want his eyes to be in line with this,

with that wider

and I do want him centered still

So that's pretty nice right there.

Let's hit. Okay.

Next, I'm going to do file.

You'll notice that I defaulted to my move

to a shortcut
for that is V, and that's a handy one to

learn.

Let's go place embedded.

We're going to use this urban
background. 30

And let's go ahead and scale that up.

Kind of want this yellow

in the background
to match up with the yellow on this shirt.

And here and here,
just so that the yellow that's

splashing onto them kind of makes sense.

Let's hit.

Okay.

Maybe just a touch larger

so we don't have this edge in here.

So. Okay,

that's pretty nice.

Next kind of go Filter, Blur,

Gaussian, Blur

and just add a little bit of a blur.

So that's kind of pushed
through the background of it.

I won't also convert this
to a smart object

The nice thing about converting to smart
object is a

when you have a mask
is it makes the layer the size

sorry, it

makes your cutout restrained to the layer.

So it kind of applies the mask
without really applying it

next I'm going to go to layer effects.

Now, we haven't really discuss these,

but these are effects
that you can apply to a layer.

And in this case, I'm
going to apply a drop shadow

and let's look at our settings here.

So this is the blending
mode of the drop shadow.

The default is multiply.

And usually that's
what you want to keep it on.

Next is the angle,

and that changes the angle,
which we'll see

if we increase the distance here

so to about there.

Another thing that you should know here
is that you can actually

just go into your image
and drag your dark shadow around

and that's going to adjust the distance
and the angle for you at the same time.

So in this case,
maybe I want it right there.

Well, actually,

the light's hitting him more here,
so it actually make more sense

in this case for the drop shadow
to be on this side,

maybe around there

And let's take the opacity on it

down a bit and let's increase
the size and the size increases

kind of how feathered that dark shadow is

and then spread

allows you to increase the size

of the drop shadow.

In this case, you can see as soon as I do

that, it's no longer

taking into account the mask.

And that is actually an indicator
that there's something wrong with a mask.

So let's go in here
and see what's wrong here.

So I'm going to option, click on the mask,

the zoom in here
and see what could be wrong.

Let's go to our eyedropper.

I and I'm going to open my info panel

I'm going to select this area.

And you can see that is the problem.

Our mask needs to be 100%.

So this actually has 1% of opacity on it.

So what I'm going to do is in my mask,
I'm going to do a command M for curve.

You can see it there.

It's going to take this.

And what oops, actually,
you can see it there.

Just take that and go to right
where the histogram is

flat right there at.

Okay, Now
if I close our smart object here at save,

voila, you can see that
got rid of that background.

All right.

But we don't need any spread.

But that was a good indicator
to show that there was something

wrong with our mask there.

All right.

Next you can add noise.

We're not going to do that.

And this if you have

So this is something that relates
more to your fill.

And we'll get into that now

because I didn't cover it earlier
because it wasn't relevant.

So let's hit okay here.

And the difference between opacity
and so opacity, if I take that down,

is going to take down
the opacity of the layer and the effect,

the layer effect that's on it.

If I take down the fill, it's going to
take down the opacity on the layer,

but not the effect that's on it.

So you can actually see that
drop shadow still.

And now if I click into this drop shadow,
you can see if I turn this on or off,

you can see whether the layer
knocks out the drop shadow.

All right.

So there there are cases, graphic design,
product photography,

where you're putting layers on things
where this becomes important for most

just straight up,
you know, photo retouching.

And if you're just taking photos
through Photoshop as a photographer,

you're not going to use it,
but just realize that it's there.

And that is the difference.

Between your fill

and your opacity.

Okay.

So we've added a drop shadow,

but I also may want to do
is just add a little bit

of a kind of a light on this back wall.

So I'm going to show you a cool trick.

Let's go ahead and go to Layer New.

And I want to do an overlay layer

and fill with neutral light.

And then I want to go to Filter Render

Lighting Effects

and this is

going to allow me
to add a light to my scene.

And if the light is I mean,

this way

probably would look something like this.

Something like that looks pretty cool.

And we can decrease
the size of that hotspot

and make the whole thing
a little bit bigger and zoom out a bit.

I can

oops.

And I can zoom out. Okay.

I guess I have to zoom out here.

That's pretty nice there.

And you can add lights here, too.

So if you want to add another, you know,

ambient light, you can do that.

That's just going to be a single light.

Maybe we do that to this corner.

You can adjust the brightness of the light
So this allows you to create some nice

lighting effects.

And the reason I did it on a gray layer
and let's go ahead and hit.

Okay.

Is this going to apply it to this layer?

And because it's an overlay,

it's applying that to the background.

I could also put this on multiply
if I want it to really strong light effect

like this.

Maybe just take the opacity down to,

you know, 50%

and I could even do
command M It's a shortcut.

Shortcut for a curve.

Let me bring our white up there

so that the part that's light
is not multiplied at all.

But we do get that nice light there.

Okay.

Let's call this layer light.

Next thing I want to do
is put a logo on his shirt.

Actually, before I do that,
I want to get rid of this yellow fringe.

So I'm going to put a layer on top of
him to clip the layer to him

and then just go here

change my layer to color,

and then go on my standard brush tool here

taking a bit smaller

and just select the color that I want
and then paint that edge.

You can see that's getting rid of that
yellow cast

there is still that yellow fringe there.

And what I might do is select this layer.

So if you want to

select the transparency of a layer hold,
then command and click on it.

That's going to select the transparency.

Now what I can do is
go to my selection here

and contract the selection by, let's say,
three pixels.

It's going to pull it in a bit,

and then I can invert my selection

and another layer clip that as well,

go on my brush,

make my foreground color black,

and then just paint some black layer

And that's going to kind of paint
and black over those.

And that's a little too strong.

And I can adjust my opacity

until, I don't know.

57% looks pretty nice.

Now, we don't have that little highlight
fringe there

just to get rid of it on this side.

I'm going to undo my deselect

too, because I want to apply it

here as well.

And let's take the opacity back
down to 50.

Shortcut for changing your opacity
when you're on the move tool.

Let's just hit the number that you want.

So if I want to 40% 50 60 just hitting

that number will change your opacity

All right.

The next thing I want to do
is add a logo to his shirt.

Now there's two things
I need to do in preparation for that

On one main thing,
I'm going to go to image duplicates.

It's just going to make a copy
of my Photoshop document.

So this is my Photoshop document.

I'm not going to go up here
and go flatten image

and I'm going to change

actually before I do anything,

I'm going to do a curve

and I want to bring out
some of the color in here.

So I'm going to take a curve down

so bring it down in the highlights.

That's kind of what I want.

I want to see these waves on a shirt.

I don't care about anything else
because what I'm going to do

is use this image to displace the logo
that I put on this shirt.

So next, I don't want this fine detail.

I just want the big folds in a shirt.

So I'm going to go to Blur,

Gaussian, Blur,

just increase that until I just have

about there.

So let's say 15 at okay.

And then I'm going to save as

and I'm
going to call this arm bini displace

and make sure you save it
as a Photoshop document.

Not a JPEG

said. Okay.

And let's close that file.

Okay. Next we're going to go file

place embedded and grab the logo

And let's go ahead

and put this logo on his shirt.

Kind of a little bit bigger

like that.

And I'm going to do a command T
and I want to warp it just a bit.

Maybe pull down the top a little, pull it
in toward the bottom here where it's

so it just looks a little more like it's
following the contours of his body here.

Like that.

And with this tool,
you don't have to grab these handles.

You can really grab anywhere in the mesh
and it'll move it around accordingly.

And set the checkmark there.

This is a smart object.

Next thing I'm going to do
is go to filter,

distort and displace.

And we can start with ten and ten
and then hit.

Okay.

And this is where our displaced document
is going to come into play.

Let's head open

There
you can see it's now curved that shirt

to match up with the folds in his clothes.

So this when you're adding a logo
to something that's not straight or flat.

This is a great way to make it
look more realistic.

Next thing I want to do is just go
on, plus turn off this layer.

Use our quick selection to select his arm

And let's turn this back on.

I want to add a mass, but in this case,
I want the mask to hide my selection.

If I just click mask, it'll show
what's in the selection.

But if I hold the option, click it.

It'll hide what's in the selection.

There you have it

next.

Let's go to multiply here.

Let me take the opacity down to 90

And there you go.

Now, added the logo to his shirt,

and that looks pretty good.

I always like to add a color grade
at the very end of any composite,

just to make the colors feel a little bit
more like they all belong together.

So in this one, I might just go for

a little bit of

cyan and there
maybe pump up the top of the red

and do the opposite on the blue.

Bring up the bottom.

Add a little bit of yellow there.

And also in

the very highlights here, I think
I want to take those down just a bit.

One thing you can do,
like let's say I want to pull down

that area of the highlight, but I don't
want to affect the rest of the curve.

Now, I can go here at a bunch of points
It's a little bit annoying.

Another way to do that,

a little bit easier
and I don't like this because it's

creating a little patch there on his face.

But just to show you here,

what you can do is go on this pen tool.

Let's reset this.

And you can actually just draw
what you want and then go to the points

and they'll kind of add
points for you accordingly.

I don't like what

it's doing here,
so I'm just going to reset it.

And I did like the right adjustments

so I'm going to bring them back
a little bit

and maybe just a hint of the blue as well
up there.

Down here,

All right.

So there you can see before, after.

So you can add a logo, the displacement
and that's

also a little bit of an introduction
to layer effects

and replacing the background.
