I can't see anything for miles.

[Narrator] And navigated some
of the world's most volatile regions.

[Narrator] All with budgets
stretched to breaking point.

We do need to move fast,
but we need to move cheap.

- How much money we got?
- It's gone.

- Our race is over.
- You're joking.

[Narrator] The rewards
have been great.

That is the best view that
I've ever seen in my life.

This is quite something.

I'll be absolutely gutted
if I knew I'd missed it.

- The way they look at life is just heaven to me.

we'll be able to finish.

And finishing it somewhere

[Jo] Last seven weeks have been
incredible. We've done so much.

- Down by the creek with the horses.

These wonderful
experiences with Sam.

[Sam] It's been life changing,
seeing all different people and lives.

It's just had a
massive effect on me.

I've seen your communication

get better and

your adhd and things.

You know you can do that
now, you've done brilliantly.

I'm happy, because
we had a great time.

I feel really gutted for you.

- We really wanted to finish the race with you guys.

It's been so
wonderful meeting you.

It's just 'cause we
were like a team.

You want everyone to
succeed, you will them to do well.

You realize how
much you go through.

People put in so much
blood, sweat, and tears.

with them that I can't explain.

When we finish in ushuaia
and they're not there,

there's gonna be a massive void.

I think if I'd brought my
other son, we'd be okay.

not to finish it,

but brilliant to

Devastating, isn't it,

I thought they'd get to ushuaia.

[Narrator] Now just three teams
remain, separated by nine hours.

Ahead, the longest
leg of the race.

With budgets
running perilously low,

the teams will have to use all their skills
and ingenuity to reach the finish line.

It's a 1:30 A.M. start...

Buenas noches.

For brand new race
leaders Jen and Rob,

with the healthiest budget, over
£130 more than their nearest rivals.

"From here, you will need to
utilize all the skills and smarts

you have learned
to make it to ushuaia.

The team that
reaches the finish line

in first place wins
a £20,000 prize."

When we started out, it seemed like
weeks and weeks and weeks in the future,

you never had to worry
about it. It's finally here.

Boom. It's ushuaia time.

[Narrator] With 21,000
kilometers already under their belts,

the teams face 4,000 more.

Racing a third of the entire
south American continent

through Argentina to
the finish line in ushuaia.

Do you think the bus
station is going to be open?

- Yes, it is open.
- It is open. Okay.

The pressure is on us leaders to stay ahead
of everyone else and not make mistakes.

Patagonia is the most
expensive part of Argentina.

That means that we
could run out of money.

We could have a
Sam and Jo sitch.

[Narrator] To get to ushuaia,
the teams must head through

one of the most remote
areas in the world... patagonia.

Inland, a sparsely
populated wilderness

of lakes, fjords,
forests, and glaciers

popular with tourists brave
enough to venture this far south

that can become inaccessible
with extreme weather.

My initial thoughts
are coastal...

Penguins sound
nice. Fast, fast, fast.

[Narrator] Hugging the
coastline may offer the chance

to hop from town to town.

But out of season,

the transport
system is a far cry

from the well
connected coastal routes

found in other parts
of Latin America.

She never left in
first place before.

- Oh! Oh!
- Oh, you all right?

-I think it was bird shit. Oh, no!
-Ah! That's good luck.

Yeah, lucky if you
see more. Oh, god.

Winning will make a
massive difference to our lives.

- We've bought a house which needs kind of cosmetic work.

- Not achievable, unless we win some moneys.

We've chosen to do this
because we know at the other end

we're going to be a stronger
team and bonded for life.

This is frustrating. Not quite
how I thought the leg would start.

Well, no choice,
being in the lead.

[Narrator] With four hours
until the ticket office opens...

Could have actually
just stayed in bed.

You're not going to get
in your sleeping bag?

No. We'll have to take shifts.

[Narrator] Jen and Rob's
lead could be short lived.

- £20,000.
- £20,000, is it?

All come down to this.

[Narrator] Next to leave the
checkpoint four hours after the leaders,

emon and jamiul.

So we're gonna go
coastal patagonia, yeah?

Bahia blanca, it's
more of a touristy route.

Tourist routes tend to
be quite well connected.

Yeah, then we'll have a better
chance of making headway faster.

It was pretty touch and go, thinking
that we might never make it into mendoza.

Just happy that we
might make it to ushuaia.

If we could make it to the end,

we've actually got a chance
of winning the race now.

- Yeah.
- We have.

We are feeling confident.

[Narrator] Of the
remaining teams,

they have the least
money left, less than £200.

- It's a long way to go.
- It's a heck of a long way to go.

The budget that we have, I don't think
it will get us all the way to ushuaia.

We're still gonna have to work.

Ola. bus terminal?

Winning the race
will be fantastic.

It's not just the money, it's
about winning it with my nephew.

- Come on.

The pressure will test us,
it'll grow our relationship.

the last leg that we can do it,

and we can beat the other teams.

We'd like to go to neuquen.

[Narrator] To regain
their slender advantage,

Jen and Rob book seats on the
next bus heading south to neuquen,

795 kilometers away

deciding to plan the rest
of their route from there.

[Jen] It's not the cheapest, but
we've taken it 'cause it's the earliest.

Now I'm thinking should we
have got on a later, cheaper bus

that maybe would have had a
better connection albeit tomorrow.

We're trying to
get to the coast.

I need to go to bahia blanca.

[Narrator] Certain of their
plan to travel along the coast...

[Woman in Spanish]

emon and jamiul
spot an opportunity.

- What are you thinking, man?
- Stay in mendoza, working here,

and then get, we possibly
kind of lose 12 hours.

Well, at least we
get a bit of working.

I feel like if we do work here,

then get a bus, we
just move in faster.

- The price...
- [Woman in Spanish]

I think everyone's
budget is suffering.

Obviously, we lost Jo and
Sam because of the budget.

Altogether, that's 6,420.

It's a long way to go,
many miles to cover.

Miles is money we spend.

- On the way, we get food?
- [Woman speaks Spanish]

- No food?
- Oh, okay.

That's disappointing, with all
the money that we just spent.

[Narrator] Opting for a bus that
doesn't leave for another 12 hours...

[Jamiul] Let's make
some money, man.

The boys plan to bankroll
a sprint to the finish line

by working at the stables
on the outskirts of mendoza.

[Emon] We have made a risky
move to stay in mendoza today.

The pay for this job is 2,300
Argentinean pesos each.

Our tickets going down
south cost just a bit over 3,000.

So it's something that
we desperately need.

Feels quite good to be a
professional shit shoveler.

- [Narrator] Uncle and nephew...
- Let's do this!

Began the race
as virtual strangers.

In the past ten years, I don't think
we've spent a full day together.

[Narrator] And at first,
they didn't see eye to eye.

Just clean the bits
that people can see.

[Emon] You should always
work as hard as possible.

I guess he hasn't been in my life too
much to realize that that's who I am.

[Narrator] But as their
knowledge of each other grew...

[Jamiul] End of the day, you need
someone to break them boundaries

to redeem myself.

Much nicer to do
things like this now,

especially that there isn't this
thing in the back of our minds.

[Narrator] ...So did their
confidence in the race.

[Emon] The race
is all about gambles.

When we did it
before, it paid off.

[Jamiul] When you do it
before, I wasn't there though.

This is what it's
all been boiling up.

So in the final leg, you gotta make bold
decisions. You gotta make bold moves.

And I'm hoping it
does payoff for us.

and jamiul stay put...

[Lizzie] All right, we
gotta be the nicest we can,

we can get as much
help as physically possible.

[Narrator]... dom and Lizzie
are the last to get going.

We are in mendoza,
ushuaia's down here.

[Narrator] Nine hours
behind the leaders.

I'm wanting to win.
I'm coming to get you.

I want to put the
pressure on them.

I want them to look over their shoulders
and think, "where's dom and Lizzie?"

[Narrator] But with money
worries of their own...

[Lizzie] We haven't got enough money
right now to go straight to ushuaia.

That is just not possible.

But we have enough
money to get to neuquen.

We can work in neuquen.

-There's a job there. Almond plantation.
-[Dom] Yeah.

The good thing about working,
you end up chatting to locals,

they have local
knowledge of the area.

Neuquen, we might
be able to hitchhike.

Our change in strategy
in the last two legs

to communicate with locals
more and use local knowledge

was the reason why
we caught up so much.

- [Man] These ones are the bus tickets.
- [Lizzie] Thank you.

We really do have something
to prove not just to ourselves,

but mum and dad,

they sometimes believe that
we were just wading through life

- a little bit carelessly.
- Yeah.

- Oh!
- I want to show not just mum and dad,

but everyone else that we can
actually achieve something big.

[Narrator] Like Jen and Rob,

the siblings are also
heading to neuquen.

Aiming to improve their finances

by taking a job there
on an almond plantation.

Well, this is it.

- We've kicked off our final leg.
- Oh my god.

We are willing to
win whatever it takes.

[Dom] Hopefully, like, jamiul and
emon get stuck on a broken bus

and Rob and Jen
snap their ankles.

[Lizzie] Oh!

[Church bell rings]

We haven't shared a single
bed for a long time, have we?

I don't think we've ever
shared a single bed.

[Narrator] Jen and Rob
stayed the night in neuquen,

the largest city in patagonia.

[Jen] No shampoo left. No
lip balm. That's gone today.

This is the last
of a hand cream.

[Narrator] Ahead of the other
teams, with the most money remaining,

but in two minds about
where to head next.

[Jen] Coastal is the
most obvious route.

That's like a hundred
percent a good route.

The trouble is that
we need to work out

how we're going
to get to the end.

[Jen] Right. New plan then.

[Rob] Go to bariloche,
pick up some work.

[Jen] Very well paid, but we're
going to miss out on all the nature,

all the best bits.

Penguins everywhere. The penguin
to person ratio is crazy. [Laughs]

- [Rob] I don't think moneywise we have any options.
- [Sighs] How disappointing.

[Narrator] To further
add to their funds...

[Jen] My trousers
are in my bottom.

[Narrator] they're traveling
to the ski resort of bariloche

for a job in the
foothills of the andes.

Bariloche...

Um, at this one, the cheap one.

So we think we're gonna run
out of money going the quick route.

So we're gonna go
the mountainous route.

[Jen] And it's bed and breakfast
and it pays particularly well.

So this is a sensible
plan in terms of money.

[Rob] That's pretty much been
our strategy from the start, hasn't it?

[Narrator] As Jen and Rob
venture into the heart of patagonia...

I can actually sleep well in
buses now, I've mastered the art.

[Narrator] Traveling
through the night,

the last team to
get out of mendoza

emon and jamiul have reached
Argentina's Atlantic coast.

[Jamiul] I hope he won't spend
that much time in bahia blanca.

I just don't wanna
get another bus.

[Narrator] Named for the color
of the soil surrounding its shores,

bahia blanca, the white
bay is the jumping off point

for exploring
patagonia's rugged coast.

[Jamiul] It's
looking a bit dead.

It seems like a
bit of a ghost town.

Is there anyway we can get a
bus down south leaving now?

- [Woman] No.
- All buses are in the night time?

- Yes. At night.
- [Both groaning]

Bahia blanca, man.

- Okay. No problem. Gracias.
- Gracias.

I think it might have been a mad
move coming here, I don't know, man.

Because I don't think waiting
around for 14 hours is good enough.

We took a risk to stay in mendoza
on work and then get a later bus.

Right now, it does
seem like a bad decision.

We've come here. It
seems that we're stuck.

I'm not really sure
what we're gonna do.

We need to try to find
work here or try to find a lift.

We can try and hitchhike.

Yeah, like, people, we need
to see which way they're going.

[Laughing]

In the UK, I do see
people hitchhiking.

But I just go drive past them.

[Horn honking]

- Can you give us a lift?

I've never really
done it my whole life.

It's gonna be
something new for me.

35 degrees heat,
dust everywhere.

[Narrator] The small town of rio
Colorado lies 200 kilometers inland.

Meaning the boys
abandoning their plan

of hopping from town
to town along the coast.

Shall we do it?

We might get there, there's
no buses in the evening.

Either we take it or we
go back to bus terminal.

Things get tough out there.

I wouldn't want to let my nephew
down, so I'll do whatever it takes.

[Emon] If it's a smaller town, there
will be less buses going through it?

It's going to be like this, man.

[Jamiul] I think this
move is too risky.

Personally.

- So we not do it then?
- I don't think so. No.

It's too much of a
risk to take, man.

[Emon] Oh, where's the time.

It's frustration, really. Things
has done us over a little bit.

Uh, we need to make faster
decisions to get to ushuaia.

So I really think we've
just messed up to be fair.

boys stuck on the coast,

newly arrived in
neuquen, dom and Lizzie.

[Dom] Come on. [Grunts]

[Narrator] Stopping to
improve their dwindling funds,

they're helping to install an irrigation
system on Johnny's almond plantation.

[Lizzie] It feels weird to
be in the middle of a farm.

When we've got a
race to think about.

This'd the last leg. This is so
important that we get to the end.

- Do you think everyone else is working?
- [Dom] I dunno, actually.

- We just popped it from there.
- [Lizzie] If we didn't have any work,

we'd be finishing the race in probably
two days. And not making it to the end.

[Dom] Hence, why we're
working on an almond farm.

[Lizzie] In the
boiling hot heat.

[Dom] I feel sick.

I think I might need
to sit down for a sec.

[Sighs]

Oh, this might not help but...

[Narrator] With dom
struggling in 40 degree heat,

the team medic steps in.

[Man] Your blood pressure

is quite low.

[Dom] Comin' out here, I felt I
was a little bit invincible.[Chuckles]

Clearly, I was wrong.

The lack of proper sleep,

proper foods, the
sun... [Indistinct]

I'm dying to win.
Almost literally.

[Lizzie] Oh my god!

[Narrator] A previous
health scare in Peru...

- [Lizzie] Is he going to be okay?
- [Man] How are you, dom?

That was petrifying.

[Narrator] Saw the
other teams pull away.

[Dom] I never expected
us to be this far behind.

I don't think you realize
how hard it was going to be.

[Narrator] But the
bickering siblings...

We just have to pull
ourselves together, I'm afraid.

We've shown that
we can catch up.

When we were younger, we were
so close, but we've grown apart.

I would say we're siblings,
not friends anymore.

- There's no better way to save our relationship than this.

[Dom] I'll be gutted if we're
not the first name in that book.

I think we've had a tough race
and the sense of achievement

just to complete
the race will be good,

so we should be proud of ourselves
if and when we get to the finish.

Back to the bus station.

[Narrator] ...Dom and Lizzie
immediately spend their earnings...

I think we have, like, $18 left.

[Narrator] ...On a night
bus to comodoro rivadavia,

1,100km away.

Hola. Want to get to San Julian.

[Narrator] Also forking out after their
failed attempt to hitch out of town...

- 2,600.
- Yeah, that's it.

[Narrator] ...Emon and jamuil commit
over half of their remaining budget

on a mammoth
journey to San Julian.

- [Emon] I'm thinking that we'll have to work again.
- Yeah?

-Yeah.

We've got a fishing opportunity.

We've been fishing before.
We've got experience.

Yeah. It'd be good if it was something
on our route, which is something we need.

Let's do that.

Another night, another bus.

I don't know about our
position right now in the race.

The gap was so minimal between the
three teams. That's definitely changed now.

[Narrator] 790km to the west...

- Oh, cold.
- [Narrator] Jen and Rob wake up in the heart of patagonia.

Bariloche is
famous for its fishing,

- whitewater rafting, and bird watching.
- [Knock on door]

Good morning. If you're
ready, we can start moving.

[Narrator] And up
in the mountains,

a growing number of
people are living off grid,

like Steven, who needs
help with his water supply.

[Steven] We walk
up to the wall thing.

Basically we'll build
a new fence around it

so no animals are
going to get into the tank.

- They try and get to it to drink, do they?
- Yeah.

[Steven] Okay.

[Jen] I've never
built a fence before.

My dad is gonna be so
proud when he sees this.

I feel like this is
how Ikea started.

Of course the race is still
very much on my mind.

Is work the right thing to do?

[Jen laughing]

We've probably got more
money than anybody else,

- but I just hope now it comes into fruition.
- Yeah.

Ready! [Laughs] All about
the thigh muscles here.

There's no point in getting to the
checkpoint last, and having, you know,

a thousand pesos in your pocket.

[Steven] We'll just clear the
area and we'll bring this stuff up.

I'm hearing through
the hearing aid.

I might not be able to
hear you all the time.

I don't like to make a big
thing of my loss of hearing

so I don't generally warn people

though when hammers, nails,
and machetes are involved,

I probably should
mention it. [Laughs]

How are we even going
to get, like, out of the city?

[Rob] I think this journey will
challenge our communication, won't it?

Robby, I'm trying
to speak to you.

I can't hear you very
well. It's really noisy.

a rocky start...

and that makes me

Every leg I've been getting like
braver and braver and braver.

is an opportunity for us
to be forced into situations

where we've had to learn
how to operate as a team.

- Just being able to prove that we can do it

and we can succeed
really molded us together.

- What do you think?
- I am very impressed with this.

I think it's an incredible
piece of engineering myself.

This has been one
of our favorite views.

that we've got such a
amazing life ahead of us.

[Dom] They're from
all over the world.

[Narrator] Overtaking them,

dom and Lizzie on their overnight
bus to comodoro rivadavia,

looking to keep
moving to rio gallegos,

778km along the coast.

The further south we go,
the chillier it's going to get.

Who needs a coat when
you're from Yorkshire?

That's eight o'clock.

[Man speaking foreign language]

[Dom] 1,995. Can we afford this?

[Narrator] But with barely 100
pounds of their budget remaining,

a local job in the
directory may be tempting.

[Dom] We have the
option to see if we can work.

However, that would mean
working tomorrow, which is an issue.

Probably put us
way back in the race.

The other option is get a
bus at eight o'clock tonight,

which will cost us about half
our budget for the rest of the race.

If we make the right
decision, we could come first.

Or if we get this wrong, we might
not finish the race whatsoever.

I'd rather have no regrets
and know that I took the risk.

- Are you happy with that?
- Yeah. Yeah.

We're not going to eat now
for like three days, you know?

- No.
- Not one thing.

[Narrator] Rio gallegos,

the last town before leaving
the Argentinean mainland behind

to enter tierra del fuego, an
eleven hour, 750km journey

that could see the
siblings leap into the lead.

[Lizzie] Stuff the money.
We will make it to the end.

We're not settling for
less than first. Stuff that.

God, this is risky.
