america at ground level, and
all for the price of the airfare?

Narrator: Five pairs of ordinary
brits are attempting just that.

Let's go!

Narrator: They will cover
over 25,000 kilometers...

Moments like this,
you'll remember

for the rest of your life.

Narrator: In a demanding
and challenging race, which

soars high into the andes,
crosses vast deserts,

and navigates some of the
world's most volatile regions.

He's coming over with a gun.

Narrator: Have they
got what it takes...

Got no Google maps,
got no mum, got nothing.

Narrator: Both physically...

Someone call an ambulance.

Narrator: And emotionally?

We need a miracle
to get out of here.

Narrator: The rewards are great.

This is crazy good.

This has brought
us closer together.

team to the finish line

will claim the prize of
20,000 pounds, in a race...

Narrator: Across the world.

Excitement, adventure, trauma.

Narrator: Previously, five
teams battled through five

south American countries.

Woman: This is not
the best day of my life.

Narrator: Back to back buses...

We smashed two
countries in two days.

Narrator: Got dom and Lizzie
to Panama City in first place.

Narrator: When Sam
began to feel the heat...

Countries are hot, but I didn't

think it would be this hot.

I can't deal with it, I'm just
going to get a flight home.

Narrator: Jo's maternal
instinct kicked in.

Anything I can do to
make his journey easier,

I don't think my uncle's
put in too much hard work.

I think he's been
tossing about, to be fair.

some really bad luck.

We lost our money.

came to an abrupt end.

Panama City... the
second checkpoint

in the race to ushuaia.

With over 17,000
kilometers still to go,

the sudden departure
of shuntelle and Michael

leaves four teams remaining.

Lessons to be learned,
and we've got to be careful

as we kind of go forward.

We have to be more vigilant.

Jen: It's made me realize
that that could have been us.

And I'm not really
ready to go home.

We need to learn from this.

Rob: If that happened
to us, well, that'd be it,

wouldn't it?

To lose that amount
of money, it just...

Jo: It just shows how
quickly it can be taken away.

Lizzie: So I'll ask for
Michael and shuntelle,

we've got to make sure
we don't forget anything.

Narrator: Teams can
only leave the checkpoint

in the order they arrived.

lead over their closest rivals,

brother and sister dom
and Lizzie are first to depart.

Lizzie: Being around each
other 24/7, it's quite intense.

But we're getting
used to it, I think.

Although we bickered
and argued the whole way,

we've still worked
well as a team.

After the race,
hopefully, we can

say we're not just siblings,
we're best friends, as well.

Your third checkpoint is Quito.

I know where that is.

It's capital of Ecuador.

Narrator: 2,000 kilometers
away, Quito, in Ecuador...

The second-highest capital
in the world, at 2,850 meters

above sea level.

It is also the closest
to the equator.

To reach it, the teams
must travel through the cities,

jungles, and mountain
ranges of Colombia

as they enter south
america for the first time.

But there's a more
immediate hurdle...

Crossing the notorious Darien
gap, a dense area of jungle

stretching 160
kilometers that connects

central to South America.

It's considered the
most dangerous place

in the western hemisphere.

Ruled by paramilitary
groups, the teams

will have no alternative
but to navigate

around this lawless terrain.

I would have quite liked
to cross the Darien gap.

Lizzie: Yeah, I think
we could die, so.

Yeah.

Lizzie: Daily schedule
for ferries to capurgana...

9:00 am, 12:00 noon, 3:00 pm.

Dom: If we can get
on that 3:00 pm one,

everyone's going to
be a day behind us.

So I think it's pretty
important that we make it.

Narrator: East of Panama
city, on the country's

Caribbean coastline,
lies the small port of tupile,

where the teams can catch
a boat and bypass the Darien

gap to enter Colombia.

In we go. In we go.

Vamos, vamos.

We're not going to
make the 3 o'clock ferry.

Why are you being
so pessimistic?

Because it's 12:30, dom.

It takes two hours
and a half to get there.

So it's going to be
3:00 when we get.

So? Lizzie: And it leaves then.

We need to buy a ticket.

Dom: There is no point getting
yourself worked up, saying

we're not going to make it.

Lizzie: I'm just
being realistic.

Dom: But what's the point in...
Like, because you don't know.

in Central America, are they?

about 13, 14 years old,

behind the leaders,

and second team to
depart Panama City, Jo

and her 19-year-old son, Sam.

A big part of this adventure
is to spend as much time

with my mom as I can,
as she's one of the biggest

parts of my life.

Jo: You're still living at
home, but in five years' time,

you'll be doing your own thing.

So I suppose I'm grabbing
onto him before he leaves,

and having this
experience before he goes.

[Crying] [Laughing]

So we have to get a boat.

There's only three a day,
and we two have missed it.

Dom and Lizzie would
have gotten 3:00 pm.

So hold on, we're
going to be getting

the same one as everyone
else will be getting?

Jo: Potentially, yeah.

Narrator: With the last boat
of the day already departed,

Jo and Sam need to leave the
comfort of the checkpoint hotel

and fend for themselves.

Wouldn't choose to
come on holiday here, but.

Sam: I've seen worse.

Being stuck in Panama
city, it does mean that we're

18 hours behind dom and Lizzie.

And the others
will be closer to us.

There's nothing
we can do about it.

So it'll make it a
much tighter race.

Narrator: Already en route
to Colombia, dom and Lizzie.

It's weird, because
you wouldn't believe

we're bypassing one of
the most dangerous parts

of the world, the Darien gap.

Because on the other
side, it's just loads and loads

of tiny little paradise
islands with palm trees,

white beaches, and blue water.

And it is nice just to go
in-between the two of them.

Narrator: The total journey
time from tupile to capurgana,

the first town across
the Colombian border,

is eight hours.

Lizzie: I think we must be here.

It's pitch black.

That's all I really know.

I have literally no idea.

For all we know, we
could be in Jamaica, so.

[Thunder]

There's some awesome lightning.

Are we here at capurgana?

Because it's late,
we've had to stop early.

Narrator: After three
and a half hours,

the siblings have reached
playon chico, 122 kilometers short

of their destination.

Dom: I don't think this is
attached to the mainland.

Lizzie: Nope.

We're literally
on a little island

in the middle of nowhere.

I don't even know if
we're still in Panama, or...

Dom: Colombia.

We're in
no-man's-land, literally.

What are we going to do?

Narrator: Just 383
meters wide, playon

chico is one of 378
San blas islands,

home to the indigenous gunas.

Until the 1990s, the main form
of currency here was coconuts.

I didn't... I didn't know we'd
be able to speak English here.

Dom: Oh.

We're looking for
somewhere to sleep.

Feels very much like we're

this sort of traveling before.

me, but nothing else.

going through the Darien gap,

it would be drugs and
guns they'll be looking for.

I don't think they're

wants to see the world.

quite do it on his own yet.

I think only travel

gives you that real excitement.

And I think this probably
is the last opportunity to do

a proper backpacking thing.

Dom: Seven-hour boat ride.

is a remote village
known for its quiet bays,

backed by dense
rainforest, making it only

accessible by air or water.

Lizzie: Guatemala, Honduras,
Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama...

We're trying to go to medellin.

because our boats are leaving
before 10 o'clock the morning,

via the team's GPS trackers.

Something bad's going to happen.

A state of emergency
has been declared

in Ecuador and travel to
that country is now forbidden.

Jen: Gosh.

A state of emergency
could be anything.

A war, a terrorist, a
natural disaster, flood.

Narrator: With no phones
or access to the Internet,

the teams are unaware
of dramatic scenes

unfolding at their
next checkpoint

in the center of Quito.

Demonstrations have
broken out all over the city,

protesting
government cuts to fuel

subsidies and workers' rights.

With unrest spreading, an
official state of emergency

has been declared
throughout the country,

shutting Ecuador's borders and
making travel to the checkpoint

of Quito impossible.

So you can't go
to Ecuador at all?

It's quite concerning now.

As a consequence,
the third checkpoint is

now villavieja, tatacoa desert.

Where on earth is that?

Right.

Oh my god.

What a turn off for the books.

You think we should

third checkpoint will

now be in Colombia, at the
heart of the tatacoa desert.

Well that's thrown

We might have to completely
change our direction.

teams have several options.

Travel via the vibrant
cities of medellin

and the nation's capital,
Bogota, the main bus

transport hub in the country.

Or, take in the
spectacular countryside

the southwest has
to offer by going

via Cali, famous for
its laid back dance

culture and mountain views.

Well, to tatacoa desert.

Yeah.

Wherever it is.

We need to hope that
all the other teams have

gone in the wrong direction.

Narrator: With routes to plan
and strategies to consider...

of build up a way of life.

Most of the time
I'm enjoying the race.

But then quite a lot
of the time, I'm not.

It's just like you go
through highs and lows.

And I think with eight
weeks I will struggle.

Going from Panama
to Colombia on a boat,

going from the islands
and the beautiful water

was absolutely amazing.

But then stuff like doing the
nine-hour, 10-hour bus ride,

I get so bored because
there's nothing to do.

And I can't deal with that.

So it's not pleasant.

Do you think it's got
anything to do with your adhd?

It probably does.

I don't know.

I've never been able to
explain why I'm anything.

Jo: When I adopted Sam
when he was six months old,

he was very hyper.

And he was quite
disruptive at nursery.

And in fact, the
nursery owner said,

We went off and did

and found this condition
