if all the negative publicity
surrounding Michael

is going to have
a negative effect on Janet.

at that point,

Janet couldn't have been
more hot.

country and couldn't do it,

in our relationship,

I was there with her
the whole time.

And it was like, we about to go,

and I went out in the audience.

and the biggest platform,

and she was amazing.

everyone was screaming.

They had the world cheering

for how amazing
that performance was.

And they told me that
when it happened,

uh, Janet, she left
and she was crying,

the whole time. Crying.

I think it was an accident.

Janet Jackson's
Superbowl appearance

has prompted a flood
of complaints to the government.

[reporter] Complaints the FCC

now finds valid enough
for an investigation.

[reporter] Today Ruperts says it
represents 43 thousand churches

demanded
that network heads roll.

To have sexualized the Superbowl
in the manner they did it,

is... is just unforgivable.

People got in trouble.
People were mad.

a potential fine of $27,500

for each CBS station,
that could cost CBS millions.

that incident happened

It's absolutely a PR stunt.

what more could you want?

It pissed me off a lot
when people were saying,

The way people tried to play it
was disgusting to me.

Because at the end of the day,

doesn't need to do anything
like that for press.

She didn't do that.

That wasn't something done
on purpose.

they look for something

to stab you with, you know.

Do you think the controversy
was overblown?

- And do you think it's a Jackson

related phenomena,

or is it a testament to our time
socially in this country?

so it was a really difficult
time on our family,

- just dealing with that.

It was really tough.

Like the media just wanted
something to feed off of,

just to... you know,
just to make this...

this whole thing bigger
than what it was.

- [Janet] With our family.
- Oh, yeah.

And I told Michael,
"You know, she's taking a hit

because of what's happening
in Santa Maria with you too."

it was very devastating.

Coming off of the Superbowl
should be a high.

Going into Grammy
should be a high.

Creating a new album
should be a high.

And all of a sudden,
all the hard work

that she has put in to...

building her career
to that point were all

taken away for...

for what, 1.5 seconds
or whatever the heck it was.

It's, it's like...

It made no sense to me.

he's scheduled to perform.

But Janet reportedly
has been told not to come.

[Janet] I was disinvited.

How did you feel about that?

I don't wanna be anywhere
that I'm not wanted.

I was on the Grammy board,

I felt they were disrespectful
to Janet,

and I resigned at that point.
Because I felt like,

"How am I your boyfriend
and these people treat you

like, you know, you don't exist,

but I'm still a part of it."

Like it put me in a bad,
weird space.

hearings that consider raising

the penalty for indecency
on the airwaves.

[Michael] Not only
was it outrageous

and offending to children,

but is enormously
degrading to women.

A lot of it I did not see,

but obviously
you couldn't' get away from it,

because it was everywhere.
And people wishing ill...

People coming up to my brothers
and saying things, wishing

I would be put away and...

Jackie, Tito and... and Marlon.

It can take its toll on you,
emotionally,

so I just stayed focused
in my... my work,

stayed close to friends,
stayed in touch with family

and that was enough for me
to pull through.

When you have everyone
whispering about you

and the majority
of it is not favorable,

that can pull you
to a different place.

[somber music]

Honestly, this whole thing
was blown way out of proportion.

And, um...

Of course, it was an accident
that shouldn't have happened,

but everyone is looking
for someone to blame,

and that's got to stop.

Justin and I,
we are very good friends,

and we will always be
very good friends.

We spoke just a few days ago.

And he and I have moved on.

And... and it's time for
everyone else to do the same.

[Gil] Janet went through hell
for Superbowl,

but it was her journey,

and she wouldn't have it
any other way.

She's just that fighter girl.

You enjoy your beautiful night

much more,
but you deserve this night

emotionally,

so I have a different
relationship with her

We hadn't even really defined

"the level" of living together.

I still was here in Atlanta,
she was still in LA.

What's the problem,
your feet won't move?

over there,

you would have known.

So, I think there were still
a lot of things

that needed to happen,
I believe,

before a person can...
You start having babies.

So, it feels that type
of situation.

Why did it end?

Um...

Probably just me being reckless.

Oh, Ben, I had heard
that he was cheating.

One of the weird things
about dating Janet is that...

dating Janet
attracts other women.

Girls wanted to talk to me more

because I was dating her,
which was really weird,

and, just you know...
I was a man.

[Janet] It was not just that,

I, I needed more than what
he was giving me.

[Janet stammers]

He was a workaholic,
and he was constantly working.

I would not see him
for like, three weeks, a month.

And soon as he would come in
and he would go to the club,

or he would do...
and I was like,

"Just carve out just
a little bit of time for me,

even if it's just us
hanging at home."

And it was hard for him to do.

I would always tell him
I never felt

he had enough time
really for a girlfriend.

His girlfriend was his work,

and he used to hate
to hear me say that,

but it was.

I'm a non-confrontational
person.

[Jermaine]
And I'm... I'm always like that.

I've always been like that,
period.

So, I usually just
walk away from it, like...

I'm sure I could have fought
much harder,

and it would have been something
that, that...

would have never gone away.

I started writing

this movie
Why Did I Get Married.

Often times when I'm writing
I picture actors in my head,

and Janet keeps popping up.

drive up here alone?

I didn't care what everybody
was saying about the Superbowl,

none of that stuff mattered.

Everyone wanted
to distance themselves for her.

Nobody wanted to work with her
on certain things.

It was just...
It was this anti-Janet movement.

I'm like, "People, it's a
f♪♪♪♪♪♪ nipple, chill. Really."

I thought, "Wow, here's a moment

where we can go
and do this movie

and just... and try to change
some minds, if we can."

[Janet] I play Patricia Agnew.

She's someone who is there
for everyone else,

but she has a very
difficult time

helping herself deal
with her own issues.

was so successful,

and everywhere we'd go
the fans would be like...

"What are they doing now?"

So, I started shooting
the second movie.

I have no more fight left in me.

[Tyler]
Everything is going great,

and then,
we get this horrific news.

[siren wailing]

[man] Sir, I have a... we have a
gentleman here that needs help.

He's not breathing, and...
He's not breathing,

and we need to... we're trying
to pump him, but he's not...

[911 operator] It's okay.
Okay, how old is he?

- [man] He's 50 years old, sir.
- [911 operator] 50. Okay.

He's not conscious,
he's not breathing?

[man]
Yes, he's not breathing, sir.

[somber music]

And good Evening everyone,
we're beginning tonight

with late news from Los Angeles.

The LA Times is reporting
that pop star,

Michael Jackson has died.

They found him
in cardiac arrest, not breathing

and rushed him to the hospital.

At first, it just...
it didn't seem true.

It didn't seem real.
I couldn't believe it.

[Janet] My sister, Toya,

she called me,
and told me he'd passed.

And I called my bother Tito.

He was driving on his way
to the hospital.

And I told him to pull over
the side of the road.

He goes, "Jan is he dead?"

I said, "Pull over
to the side of the road, Tito."

And he said,
"Okay, I pulled over."

I said, "He's gone,"
and he couldn't believe it.

My brother passed away
on Thursday,

June 25th, 2009 at 2:26 p.m.

[Jackie] His personal physician,

attempted to resuscitate
my brother.

[camera shutters click]

As did the paramedics
who transported him

to Ronald Reagan
UCLA Medical Centre.

A team of doctors,
attempted to resuscitate him

for a period of more than
one hour,

and they were unsuccessful.

It was hard,
and it was hard because...

it was on a different level.

I mean, you had
no privacy at all.

And it was just horrible.

Every time you walked
into a store,

all you saw across the store
in every magazine,

was... was that.

[Rebbie] And then there were
the paparazzis

and all this other stuff
you had to deal with.

Even on the street
that my mum lived on,

you couldn't even drive down
the street.

Every news network
you could think of was there.

[dramatic music]

[Janet]

Very proud,
because he did succeed.

[Janet]

I can't.

[sobs]

[somber music]

[Janet] It took a while for me
to accept it.

It make you think about... life.

[somber piano music]

The last time we saw each other,

we're having a surprise party
for my parents.

And my whole family was there.

And he was sitting next to me.

He was laughing like crazy.

And he had that deep laugh,

and I remember him
looking over at me.

And the last thing we said
to each other was I love you.

And that was the last time
I saw him.

You know.

[somber piano music]

But at least I have that.

At least I have that.

I miss him.

the second leg of the tour,

and there actually has been
a sudden change.

I thought it was important
that you be the first to know.

My husband and I
are planning our family.

I didn't think Janet
would ever have any children.

You know,
I knew she liked children,

but when I heard that she was
gonna have a baby,

I was shocked.

Janet is going to have a kid.

Oh, my goodness.

her 50th birthday,

reportedly pregnant
with her first child.

her Unbreakable world tour
last month.

now nearly 50 years old,
getting pregnant is challenging.

It's not so much a stigma.
People are in shock.

You're having a baby
when you're 50?

You do what every parent does,
you take care of the baby.

when you're supposed to.

And if you're in shape,
like Janet is in shape,

I was 50 when I had Eissa.

that that's too old.

And it wasn't easy.
I kept trying and trying.

And, you know... this injection,
that injection, doing this.

Going to a doctor in Italy.

[Janet] Going to a doctor
in Switzerland.

It was a lot.
I refused to give up.

And I have a beautiful
healthy boy because of it.

[Janet mumbles]

Spread advice
Don't believe the hype

Now to be 50, have a child

and then six months later,

put yourself in the position
to go back on tour.

There has to be a pressure.

But if there is anyone
in the world

that I would bet on,

can she do it?

[Janet] The biggest change
in my life is my son, Eissa.

He's my heart, he's my life.

because her baby

I love being a mother,
I love my new job.

warms my heart, it really does.

Because I never thought
she was gonna have children.

I never thought... and Eissa
is the sweetest little thing.

it's because I'm a mom.

And I'm proud to wear that one,

as much rehearsal time,

God has truly blessed me,

Well, one thing about it.
I'll tell you so you know.

She knows how to perform
for people,

she's learnt that
at an early age,

and it makes me proud
that she's doing something

that she knows how to do.

is working to confirm,

but so far TMZ and
The Associated Press

are reporting
that Joe Jackson has died.

The patriarch
of the Jackson Family,

originally the Jackson Five,
has passed away.

[reporter 4] The 89 year old
entertainment manager

passed away in Las Vegas
after a long battle with cancer.

[Janet] You know,
my father is a fighter.

He is very strong.

Just to see the fight in him,

he said, "No, I wanna get up.
I wanna get out.

I wanna get..." Standing up
and trying to shake it off.

He was always a fighter.

I mean, that's... that's what's
made my family so successful.

His strength, his drive

and, uh, he's still fighting
to the very end.

[Rebbie] It was very difficult.

I couldn't believe it,
even though it happened,

I still couldn't believe it.

And he had such a strong impact
on the family,

that when he passed...

it weighed on the family a lot.

[Janet] He had this foresight

and he saw that that was
the way for me,

and he wasn't wrong.

I know my father loved us.

[Janet] He really looked out for
us and he really protected us.

He protected his children.

He was there for his kids
in those ways.

You always wish there was
more time with your parents,

but I have to say one thing.

I got the opportunity
to thank him.

Thank God.

To thank him...

and to really talk to him
about being a man back...

in that time, in that game.

What he did for us,
for his children.

I got the chance to do that.

I'm just happy that I did

and not after the fact
of finding out he was sick,

but being able to tell him then.

I'm so happy that I did,
I got that chance.

he got to spend time

with his grandson, you know.

and kind of do away
with her quietly,

as if she never existed.

and people asking,

By that point, social media
was the thing

that really brought a lot
of people into the conversation.

So, "This person is allowed in,

and you're holding her
to these standards

that you wouldn't hold
to anyone else?"

and we're in a whole new world

of social media and Tik Tok.

Everything is coming out.

Everyone is just looking back
and being like,

why did we put this lady
through it? You know.

The one that stayed firm,

is the genuine Janet
that fought though it.

the same throughout.

Yeah, it screwed up
with her professionally,

but she never waivered
and she kept going.
