that seems to be off-nominal
that they don't like.

if they can recover it

and we can fly
or if we have to scrub.

I am an actor.

I've been an actor
since I was six years old.

Whether it's writing, directing,
acting, producing, it's my way of life.

-Would you wake up, please, honey?
-What are you looking at?

whenever anyone might see him.

[Shatner] You might know me
as Captain Kirk on Star Trek.

Beam me up.

[Shatner]
What an extraordinary thing

to be part of
a show business phenomenon.

I'm astonished not only by
the number of fans, but the passion.

There is an adventure in my life
that I would not have had

had I not played the role.

And it's only by being jeopardized

do you have a real taste
of what it's like to be alive.

Once again, we've saved
civilization as we know it.

So I have a kind of story to tell you.

I'm really gonna go into space,
I think.

I mean, there's a romance,
a beauty, a mysterious beauty about space

that I'd like to take a look at.

[Shatner] What led to this moment
was my fortuitous meeting with Jeff Bezos.

Jeff. Come to make an entrance.

-[Jeff Bezos] How are you?
-I'm so good.

-Yourself?
-Good.

[both chuckle]

The company is working on New Shepard.
It's a tourism vehicle.

Right.

That's the one that, like,
Alan Shepard did. It's called suborbital.

-You go straight up, you go into space.
-Right, the one we just saw.

Yeah, you're in space
for about four minutes.

-And you're building them now? Here?
-Yeah. We haven't put people in yet.

I had only read about Jeff Bezos

and the richest man
and all that kind of thing.

-Is this one in the making?
-Yes.

[Shatner]
I had no idea.

I thought the guy started Amazon
and he thought, "Well, I'm a rich man.

What do I wanna do next?
I'll go into space."

Little did I know that
he'd had this dream all his life.

[Bezos]
So I think it's important.

I think building the infrastructure
so that humans can go to space

safely and inexpensively
is actually gonna be important

for our grandchildren
and their grandchildren.

Your objective is to build large vehicles

to do the heavy lifting
that's done on Earth,

-the polluting and all that kind of thing.
-That's it.

-Do it up there.
-You got it.

-And keep the green...
-Keep Earth clean.

-Boy, I could get behind that.
-That's what we're trying to do.

-I can get on that.
-And it's not gonna be easy.

Jeff Bezos' concept
that all these polluting industries

could be moved into orbit

and to make pollution a thing of the past,

I mean, what noble ambitions those are
and somebody has to start it.

This is the crew capsule.

So this is a little simulation
of what it will be like.

Okay.

[engines roaring]

Wow.

Holy...

Okay, I... I, um...
I can't go any further.

[laughs]

I'll go. I'll go, Jeff. I'll go. Wow.

-You haven't been up there yet?
-No, not yet.

-Are you gonna go up first?
-Yes. Well, I'm definitely going up.

I'm gonna just go as so soon as I can.
I can't wait.

Are you gonna come?

If every...

If everything is worked out,
absolutely.

-Yeah.
-Yeah.

Captain Kirk affected all these people.

-All of them, one degree or another.
-Yeah.

The sense of exploration,
the humanity of it is what we need.

-Yeah.
-And I really feel that.

You know, if you follow Bezos' idea,
even just to be an observer,

it's like a fairy tale, really.

[Bezos]
On my grandfather's ranch

just outside of this little town
in South Texas called Cotulla,

they had a small public library

and one of the fellows in town
had donated

his entire science-fiction collection
to that library

and over the course of a few summers,

I just worked my way
through all the classics:

Asimov and Heinlein and so on and so on.

In third or fourth grade,
I came across this show called Star Trek.

It had a big impact on me.

Star Trek
is this incredible future utopia.

It made a bunch of people wanna help
try to invent that future.

It certainly did me.

And since I was a teenager,
I've been focused on going to space

in order to save the Earth.

I really believe that's essential.

I don't think it's a question.
I think it's 100% needs to happen.

That's what Blue Origin is working on.
That will change everything.

And I've always expected it to take time.

[rock music playing]

Every single day you think to yourself,
"Ah, this is just impossible."

What you have to do is be stubborn
on the vision and flexible on the details.

That's how you build a road to space.

Space travel and rocket science,
people know that it's hard.

But it's also true
that it's a solved problem.

The hard part is real reusability.

Jeff Bezos ready for liftoff.

Bezos realized the dream he's had
since a child.

[man]
T-minus ten, nine, eight, seven,

six, five, four,
command engine start, two, one.

-[engines roar]
- Ignition.

And New Shepard has cleared the tower,

on her way to space
with our first human crew.

Oh, wow. Oh, wow.

[Bezos] For me, the experience
has completely changed me.

-Whoo!

So, Morgan, this is the first
of what they hope will be

many Blue Origin launches, right?

Yeah, Kate, Blue Origin
says they have plans in place

to have two more flights this year.

If everything goes according to plan,

those flights should be happening
in September or this October.

[wind chimes tinkling]

-[Shatner] Hi, my darling.
-You look nice.

Girls, come and sit down.
I have something to tell you.

Okay, that sounds ominous.

Girls, your father,

is going to go into space.

They've invited me and I think
it's something I want to do.

That bothers me more than anything

'cause I don't like to think of you
as feeling badly.

I get why you'd want to do it.
I mean, it does sound kind of cool.

Imagine being part of it
in some small way.

-[Leslie Shatner] That's very cool.
-Being part of it.

I agree the coolness factor's extreme,

but the safety factor's also extreme.

I just think that you should make sure
your body can handle that kind of stress.

Is there an astronaut or somebody?

No. It's a counterpoint to Star Trek.

-This is not very reassuring.
-Yeah, I don't mean to reassure you.

Am I nervous?

Well...

You know, I am.

I'm going up into space.

I don't know how many people
who can say that who are now alive.

I've seen that tank-like vehicle

that moves the rockets
out to the launching pad.

And I've seen them connect
and the steam comes...

[music playing in background]

♪ Is though I am... ♪

Is that weird?

That's what I'm afraid
is gonna happen on launch.

this to the world with a tweet.

You said, "So now I can say something.
Yes, it's true.

I'm going to be a rocket man."

Remember, I mean, Shatner is the guy
who famously said, "Beam me up, Scotty."

Get out as many of his catchphrases
as he can.

[Cooper] Have you ever thought about
actually being able to go up into space?

No, I mean...
I'm so sorry to...

to bring you down to Earth,
to use a phrase.

-It was all pretend, you see.
-[laughs]

-Oh, my God, he's going into space.
-Wow.

Are you kidding me?
This is awesome.

He's gonna be actually flying
into outer space.

What he has given the world
as a cultural phenomenon

with Star Trek is incredible,

that he should have a little bit of
that adventure for himself is beautiful.

I'm just gonna give a bright hope that
one day we're gonna be a spacefaring race.

Finally to see him, like,
really in space in reality,

it's, like, a pinnacle thing
for many people to see.

It's just incredible.

It's Shatner's turn. Why not?

And if something goes horribly wrong,
he'll go out in a blaze of glory.

that gave a hope to a lot of people.

It created a safe space
no matter what you were going through

and he may not realize it, you know,
but it gave people the strength to go on

when they were having
a lot of rough times.

I know it did for me, you know.

When they said, "Would you like to go
to space? And you're Captain Kirk..."

Oh, yeah,
that was a long time ago.

And I thought, you know, "Who cares?"

Thank you for creating something
that gave hope to a lot of people.

...years with Star Trek having played
the role of Captain Kirk,

it's life-changing in its way
for so many people.

There's a great deal of curiosity
about this fictional character,

Captain Kirk, going into space,
but I am an actor that played the role.

I mean, we think
of the astronauts as supermen,

but they're just human beings
filled with the same fears that I have.

I have noted
the passage of the Enterprise

on its way to whatever awaits it.

The finest starship in the fleet.

[Shatner] And that's the question
I'm having prior to this leap into space.

Will it work?

[inspirational music playing]

After Star Trek ,
the show was cancelled

and my marriage fell apart.

I was essentially broke.

But in order to save some money,

I bought a used truck and I put a cab
on the back of the pickup truck.

I used it as living quarters for months.

And I'm in my truck in a pasture

and I'm lying in this camper,

looking through a window up at the moon.

[man]
And we're getting a picture on the TV.

I've got a little 4x4
black-and-white television

and I'm looking at the
astronauts stepping on the moon.

[man 2]
How is the quality of the TV?

[Shatner] And there we were...

[man]
Really good.

[Shatner]
...walking on it.

[man 2] Oh, jeez, that's great.
Is the lighting halfway decent?

[Shatner]
The most glorious moment...

[man] Yes, indeed,
they've got the flag up now.

[Shatner]
...of mankind,

and there I am,
looking at their glory in my misery.

Still, that moment stays with me

when I think of the glory of space.

The continuity of that is, here I am,

55 years later...

about to go into space.

I wanted to feel the essence of space

and see what weightlessness was.

And then I picture myself

looking down at Earth,

the blue orb.

Come right around here.

-And then right down here.
-"Light this candle." Who said it?

-Alan Shepard.
-That's right.

He said, "Let's light this candle."
-Oh, let's light this candle.

And that's what you're gonna be feeling
when you're sitting in that capsule.

-Oh, let's light this candle.
-You're like, "Let's light this candle."

Oh, I wanted it to be at rocket.
Let's light this rocket.

These are quality people
you rarely meet in life,

the kind of people we're meeting here,

especially these astronauts
on the journey with me.

[man]
They're very excited to meet you.

Good to see you in person.

I watched the original Star Trek series
on TV.

I watched every movie.
I have been to Star Trek conventions.

And we are gonna be doing something
that is science fiction

and it's going to become fact.

I've always loved just the peaceful future
that Star Trek represented,

and I think it's a future
we can aspire for

and as a species evolved towards.

I think William Shatner
is the best possible co-passenger

I could have for this flight.

[indistinct chatter]

-[Shatner] Hello.

Hi. I'm glad you're here.

Yeah, I'm so ready.

I think I reached a certain age

and I had given up on the idea
that I would go to space.

I felt very fortunate to have worked
as an engineer at NASA.

I always just felt really lucky
to be enabling other people to go,

scientists and professional astronauts.

I was fine with that,
so maybe that makes all of this

a little bit more hard
to wrap my brain around, you know?

-To our adventure.
-To our adventure.

[laughter]

[Powers] Cheers.

This was my Halloween costume
a couple years ago.

[laughs]

It's great. That's wild.
That is so crazy.

[laughter]

[Bezos] Do we have some
prospective astronauts here?

[laughs] Jeff, every time I see you,
your arms are getting bigger.

[laughs] Well, thank you.
I've been working hard.

-Yeah, I mean, you're working hard.
-Well, you're my role model.

-Well...
-Seriously.

-No doubt.

-Okay.

[Shatner] I didn't know Jeff at all,
only what I read, when I first met him.

The more I talked to him,
the more I felt

a warmth towards him
that was unusual for me,

and I felt I had made a new friend.

So I have a favor to ask of you.

Let me show you something.

-You don't need to sign anything.
-[laughs]

So, this...

It's something that my mother has saved.

So in fourth grade,
I made these.

And so she went and dug around
and found these.

Are you serious?

And this is a medical tricorder.

-This...
-[imitates tricorder]

This is a communicator.

Oh, my God. Jeff.

And this is one
of Spock's science tricorders.

That's hysterical, man.

And we would make...
These are just the surviving ones.

-We had dozens of these things and...
-And you played with these?

We played. In fourth grade,
me and my friends, Dean and Kyle,

the three of us played Star Trek
all summer long.

The favor I want is to ask you if you
would carry these up into space for me.

What a great idea.

So that I can say
these have been into space

with my friend Bill Shatner.

I'll take them up.
I'll absolutely take them up.

[Bezos] Thank you.

Tell me about this land

and how the concept
went from horses to rockets

or from rockets to horses.

So I grew up spending all my summers
on my grandfather's ranch

-in South Texas from age 4 to 16.
-Oh, really?

[Bezos]
I've always liked Texas.

I've always liked ranch, ranching,
and so,

20 years ago,
I started looking for a ranch

that I could have as a place
as a base of operations for Blue Origin.

And you had Blue Origin in mind
when you were looking for a ranch?

Yes, it was just starting. Uh-huh.

A place where I could bring my kids
and ride horses

and come to Thanksgiving and hike,

and combine that
with Blue Origin's base of operations.

Wow.

When you talk about space travel
and especially human space travel,

this is the barnstorming era.

In the era of biplanes, barnstormers
would fly out to a farmer's field

and all the local people would come
and they'd pay a fee,

and they'd get to go up in the air
for five minutes

and see everything from the air.

And that's what
suborbital tourism is too.

It's the barnstorming era of rockets.

But what does it let you do?
It lets you practice.

And everything we humans practice
we get good at.

I love it.

[Bezos] It would be impossible
in the barnstorming era

to conceive of the 787 or the Airbus 380,
and that's what we are doing today.

We're figuring out that path forward.

You know, you go back into the 1960s

when this novel show came on the air
called Star Trek...

Steady as she goes.

[Bezos] ...and it showed us a world
of almost a utopia...

Where I come from,
size, shape, or color makes no difference.

[Bezos] ...where people of all races
and all genders worked together.

It was an amazing, prescient thing.

I really believe that
the world moves forward

with dreamers and builders.

And the dreamers dream
and then the builders build.

And that's a big circle.

[Shatner]
That's exactly right.

[crickets chirping]

[Shatner] This is the first morning
that we are on our adventure

and the sun is rising
and we're beginning our activities.

[Sarah Knights] All right, astronauts,
I'm so excited you're here

and to teach you everything that you need
to know over the next couple of days

to be able to fly to space.

And that's real exciting.

Sit back.

We've been working towards a school
ready to fly people to space,

and that feels really exciting
to have that confidence

in knowing that
we're gonna have a fantastic flight.

You can see sort of a summary
of the flight in the back

that will take off.

The crew capsule
will separate from the vehicle.

[woman]
The engine will start

and the rocket will lift off
of the launchpad.

Twenty seconds later, the crew capsule
will separate from the booster

and the astronauts can unharness
and enjoy zero-G.

The crew capsule
will continue past the Kármán line

to an ultimate apogee of 350,000 feet.

Around three and a half minutes
after separation,

the crew capsule will begin
to re-enter the atmosphere.

Parachutes will deploy, providing
a nice, slow descent back to Earth.

[Knights] So this is our trainer
that we're gonna get you inside.

This is the moment when
you find out what seat you're in.

[Shatner]
We're just at the beginning,

but how extraordinary it is
to be part of that beginning.

What an adventure.

I'm getting very excited by this exercise.

Since I was a kid, I always loved science,

absorbing every book
about spaceships, astronomy,

just could not stop.

Now finally, I can have the privilege
of indulging in an adventure

in a way that I just never thought
would actually happen.

Three, two, one.

Liftoff. New Shepard
is clear of the tower.

[Powers]
New Shepard is an autonomous vehicle.

That means that
there is no human pilot on board.

[Shatner]
You know, we're not pulling any switches

except get out of the seat
in weightlessness.

-[Powers] Bill, you're in space!
-So good.

-Look at that thing floating around.
-[Powers] Bill, you're in space.

Look at Audrey's hair. It's crazy.

I cannot wait to see the view.

Think about how amazing
this is going to be when we see this

and when we experience this.

my entire life and, you know,

I actually brought an astronaut Lego
with me to fly in my duffel bag,

little yellow guy,
classic 1980s Lego astronaut.

It represents my childhood
and my dreams of traveling.

You're a great actor.
Did anyone ever tell you that?

[Powers]
You're a great actor.

[de Vries] You really should think about
that from a career perspective, Bill.

[Shatner] "You're gonna be weightless."
What does that mean?

I wanna go up there
without any prearranged ideas.

I want it to happen to me
and let it happen.

We have our CAPCOM, Kevin Sproge,
here to give us a Mission Control update.

So I have good news
and I have other news.

Unfortunately, our weather forecast
has significantly degraded

over the last 24 hours.

And what we do
is based on our wind prediction.

We actually have our guidance,
navigation, and control engineers

run a prediction
of where the capsule is gonna land

and our prediction this morning

indicates the capsule is gonna land
in an unsafe area

'cause the winds are so strong.

Not just surface winds,
it's all the way up from jet stream.

And then we have really bad wind shear
at 10,000 feet

all the way down
to strong surface winds.

So based on that,
we're gonna delay the launch for one day.

[Shatner] The universe
has taken care of me all my life.

So these winds
are a signal from the universe.

"Don't go, Bill.
The rocket is flawed. Don't go."

Please start us off. How are you feeling?

We've delayed 24 hours
because of the winds

and the enormous concern for our safety

what we'll do this morning

is we're going to go out
and we're going to start with a tower tour

and we're going to walk through
all of the movements

that you're going to take tomorrow
when you fly to space.

[Powers]
It's been very real this past week.

I have been talking about this since
I was, like, five years old.

It's very...
It's very overwhelming, the whole thing.

I think I've just been in kind of
a suspended disbelief the whole time.

The idea that I'm actually gonna get
on top of a rocket in one day

is just hard to fathom.

[bell rings]

You're 90 years old.

They say that you will be
the oldest person going into space.

Why did you want to do it?

Because I wanted to claim
that I was the oldest person that went.

"He's the oldest guy
that went into space?"

I wanna have the vision.
I wanna see space.

I wanna see the Earth.

I wanna see what
we need to do to save Earth.

I wanna have a perspective
that hasn't been shown to me before.

That's what I'm interested in seeing.

-Hello.
-Hello, it's nice to meet you.

How are you?
A pleasure to see you.

Yeah.

I flew twice,
both on the Space Shuttle Atlantis

and once to the Hubble Space Telescope

and once
to the International Space Station.

So I got to go
to two different destinations.

Okay, you're the man I need to talk to.

-Really?
-Yeah.

What did you see
when you had time to look up?

So the first thing I saw
as I came out of the airlock

and so I'm coming out
and I take that, you know,

grab the handrail outside the airlock
and I pop my head out,

and I'm looking out the payload bay
at the Earth,

the curvature of it, you know.

It was... It was mind...

Just awe.

What did you say?

I didn't say a word.
I stopped, though,

and I just sort of froze
and took it all in and I'm just like...

I think just that picture of Earth
just took my breath away.

-[Shatner] Wow.
-[Mike Good] Just so beautiful.

How's the sound of that?

A small... small "A."

It is kind of a big day for you tomorrow
and you're gonna go up into space

for the first time,
and how are you feeling about that?

Have you imagined your own death?

-I've thought about it. I'm not...
-Are you terrified by it?

No, I'm not.
I used to be, like, when I was younger.

I used to be, you know,
more afraid of that.

As I've gotten a little bit older,
I've gotten less and less concerned.

Less afraid of it.

Because there was a guy who,
when he died,

took a deep breath and said,
"Of course."

Mm.

-And did he see everything?
-Mm.

So tomorrow, does your heart
suddenly leap and say,

-"I see... I see it"?
-Mm.

Not the revelation, but I see the mystery.

I'd love to just expand in weightlessness
and have that enlightenment.
