students go wild

like when a teacher says,

"Today, we will
be watching a movie."

They go nuts.

Yell and stuff.

And as an educator,

I try not to take it personally

because movies are pretty good.

Have you seen "Spirited Away"?

I know the alternative
is learning.

But at the same time,

I think the students
are probably more excited

than they should be

because classroom
movie experiences

are only just okay.

The school library has
a limited selection,

and they often end up
watching films such as...

"Fresh Water Story,"

"Julius Caesar Revealed,"

"The Great Flying Day,"

"Tales by Old Pheasant,"

"The Patriot Man,"

"Trash Can Cats
Go Rom-Pomp-Pomp,"

or "The Day After Tomorrow."

For the past five years, though,

I usually end up
showing my favorite,

"The Adventures of Otto."

I haven't seen a man
who looks like that,

but if he stole a book
from the library

I'm down to help
you find him.

Joe: Ha!

I could watch this one
over and over,

but my students
have gotten tired of it.

Hello.

My name is Joe Pera,

and though movie days
are fun for students,

for teachers,
they can be as stressful

as landing an airplane
on a river.

This Friday
is the last day of school

before winter break.

And as entertainment curator,

I need to pick out
something to watch

that's both enjoyable
for my students.

But harmless enough that
I won't get in trouble

with the school or parents.

Near the top of my list of fears

is getting bit on the nose
by a snake

and dying with a swollen honker
in the British hospital.

But above even that
is losing my job.

That's why I am spending the day
prescreening options.

You got to prescreen options.

It's something they should
have taught a teacher school

'cause last year, I learned
my lesson the hard way.

Andrea had the most
behavior points this spring,

so she brought in
her favorite film

"Wish It Ain't So."

[ Bell rings,
indistinct conversations ]

Interesting.

Hey, you [bleep] bitches.

[ Students laugh ]

[ Glass shatters ]

Please don't tell your parents.

Luckily, they didn't.

Why would that be
the first line of anything?

[ Sighs ]

Just wanna reward my students

for a good first half
of school year

by showing them
a good first half movie,

I signed up to teach choir,

but I'm somehow now both
a film critic and censurer,

trying to figure out

can something that
avoids violence or swearing

ever be considered great art?

I don't know.

You're probably now thinking.

Why not just put on
the latest comedy special

of the popular ventriloquist.

That would put me in danger

of getting fired, as well,

for showing
the students something

that could be deemed political.

As you and I both know,

all ventriloquist are
overtly Republican.

That's why I got
so nervous last month

when Gabriel did
his lunch performance.

Long story, but, basically,

we give him
the last five minutes

of lunch each month

to perform
for the other students.

His decision to not talk
through the puppet,

but instead re-create
the title sequence

of "Caddyshack"

was, to put it bluntly,

a freakin' relief.

After, I spoke with Gabriel,
and he shared his thoughts

on the connection between
conservatism and ventriloquism.

It was fairly obvious
to observe,

but I still haven't
figured out why.

I've got theories,
but the nicest of them is,

it's a throwback
to old times.

In fact, ventriloquism
can even be traced

back to ancient Greece,
ancient Egypt,

I didn't know that.

But make this
thing talk?

Modern ventriloquism
is the oppression of puppets.

So right, my man.

People are thrilled

by the spectacle
of a puppet speaking,

but only with
constant reassurance

that it's not
actually speaking

by always having a hand
up its back.

It's very...
[Clicks tongue]

I feel this applies
to ventriloquism post-1960,

when puppets were liberated
by Jim Henson

and allowed to exist
as autonomous Muppets.

Hmm.

If Jeff Dunham
and Terry Fator fans

saw Kermit the Frog
riding a bicycle,

they would cry blasphemy,

then bludgeon it.

'Cause something
so free and beautiful

should not be
allowed to exist.

Oh, and Gabriel,

how do you know
about "Caddyshack"?

Oh, it was one
of the three videos

we had at
the Hitobo Research Base.

Oh.

By the way,
if you're wondering

if this program has an agenda,
it does --

to encourage everyone
to pick up an instrument.

It's not
just ventriloquist.

If you think about it,

other types
of entertainment people

can also be linked to particular
political leanings.

Correct me if I'm wrong,

but I think that actors,
for example,

tend liberal,

except for, of course,
Ronald Reagan.

Sports announcers, conservative.

Magicians, Libertarian.

I was thinking about this
when Sarah and I went

to the Evelyn Bonnet

in Forest Roberts Theatre.

You probably know her.

She was featured last season
on "USA is Gifted."
