often know as Pinchgut,

ii the ladies will forgive the expression.

It was given the name, Pinchgut,

by the first convicts
incarcerated on the island.

It was only a bare rock
then and the poor devils

got very lime in the way of sustenance.

- I expect to got no
worse than they deserved.

- A lot of them early convicts was Irish

and the Irish always deserve
better than they got.

This stone was laid by a recent Governor

of New South Wales, Sir John.

- This fort was built in 1857

during the Crimean War
to keep out the Russians.

initials carved on the wail

by some of them early
convicts who worked here.
