JASON: Hey, Sandwich,
good morning!

We're about to give
our Cuban iguana his breakfast.

Sandwich came over
from Cuba on a boat,

stowed away with nothing but
his dreams coming to America.

I brought you some fruit today.

Come on down.

It was not a very nice iguana
when it got here.

Did nothing but want to try
and bite my fingers off

and hit me with his tail.

I have all this delicious food
for you, if you come down.

But with lots of time and
a little bit of snack bribery.

Hi, buddy.

He now actually wants
to interact with us

and just hang out.

This is actually several years
in the making

to get to this point.

Everything is turned around.

Our relationship
has totally changed.

Tampa is the home
of the Cuban sandwich,

and now Zoo Tampa is home
of the Cuban, Sandwich.

He has come a very long way

in the three years
that we had him.

Claws are super sharp.

He could definitely do some
damage to us if he wanted to.

He has to trust us,
but then I have to trust him.

So we had a nice back-scratcher,
and he likes this as well.

Shows a very positive
response to it,

and he's just, I guess
he'll just hang out with me

all day if I let him.

He's the coolest
Cuban Sandwich in Florida.

ALISON: Topi!

CHRIS: Here at Zoo Tampa
we're always on the move.

Every morning, from inside their
dens to out to their habitats.

To get treats,
and have fun with new friends.

KATELYNN: 700-pound puppy.

CHRIS: It's really up to
the Animal Care team

and the bonds they create
to make all of this happen.

KP: Do you like that?

JENNY: Ready?
MARIE: Yeah.

KAELA: Right about here?

MARIE: Yeah.
JENNY: Yeah, that's good.

KAELA: We have Kacey
the sun bear coming shortly.

MARIE: So, he really
likes bubble baths.

I'm really excited
to see him in here.

JENNY: Me, too. (laughs)

KAELA: It's the first sun bear
that we're having

here at Zoo Tampa,
so we're very excited

to get to learn a new species
and excited to meet him.

Malayan sun bears are
a small species of bear.

They have a shorter coat, also
a white crest on their chest.

Alright, so let's finish up

cleaning the rest
of the habitat.

JENNY: Sounds good.

So we know a little bit
about Kacey

already from the document
that we've received

from his home right now.

We know that
he loves bubble baths.

We know that he loves painting.

We know that he loves lettuce.

(laughs)

But there's a lot
that we don't know.

He is a little bit
of a man of mystery.

MARIE: You guys got it?

KAELA: We're going to hang this
really big playground tube.

He can climb into it
and hang out and sleep.

MARIE: How high are
we going with it?

KAELA: It's not going
to go that high.

MARIE: Okay, so he can crawl in?

KAELA: Yeah.

MARIE: He's a shorter bear.

KAELA: Everybody likes to rock,
right, when they sleep?

Rock to sleep. (laughs)

JENNY: Let it down.

MARIE: Perfect!
KAELA: Cute!

JENNY: Yay!
MARIE: Feels pretty good.

JENNY: Yeah, sturdy.
KAELA: About 200 pounds.

KAELA: Two of us, if we get
in there and it holds, then...

MARIE: You wanna get in? Sure.
KAELA: Yeah.

KAELA: We could
all three get in. (laughs)

JENNY: It's very important
to make sure

that Kacey's very comfortable
when he arrives,

because we can form
a relationship with him

a lot better if
he is comfortable.

MARIE: Alright, here I come.

JENNY: Ugh! (laughs)

Oh, my gosh.

KAELA: Okay?

JENNY: It feels sturdy.
MARIE: Okay.

KAELA: Team bonding right here.

JENNY: Yeah.
MARIE: It is.

JENNY: We want him
to love his new home

as much as we already love him.

ALEX: Coming to greet y'all, we
have a southern ground hornbill.

They're gonna be kinda like
the watchdogs of the savanna.

They'll sound off if there
are large predators around.

(hornbill booming)

ASHLEY: Look at you!

We have two
southern ground hornbills.

Their names are
Henry and Hannah.

They both live
in the Africa section.

Their eyelashes are
my favorite part.

(booming)

Hannah's booming to you.

(booming)

Southern ground hornbills
will vocalize through a booming.

They use that to pick up
on social cues

and interact with one another.

Good morning, buddy.

Henry is probably one of my
favorite birds that we have here

because he's very interactive.

What are you doing?

He's unpredictable and you never
know what he's gonna do.

(banging)

Oh, are you going right for it?

One minute he could
bring you a present

and the next minute
he's chasing you.

(banging)

Such a good helper.

His partner Hannah, not so much,
she kinda hangs back,

but the second Henry sees you,

he's at your feet,
playing with your shoelaces.

I wish I had eyelashes like you.

He just wants
your attention always.

BLAYNE: Up close and personal.

ASHLEY: Come here, bud.

BLAYNE: Henry,
can we see your wing?

How's it looking today?

ASHLEY: Henry has
this large mass

growing on one of his wings.

We're not entirely sure
what it is.

I haven't really been able
to see that wing,

so hopefully I can kind of
get down to his level

and peek at it and see.

BLAYNE: Yeah.

(booming)

What is this?
Want to try that?

They're gonna have to slide
these little tiles over

to get the mealworms out.

Worms?

ASHLEY: Good job, buddy.

Oh, look at that, I can see
your wing really good.

BLAYNE: Yeah,
this is a great angle.

ASHLEY: We are concerned
about this mass,

because it does seem
to be continuing

to get larger and larger.

We're not sure what it is.

It could be a tumor,
so it could potentially spread.

It could also be an infection

and it could become
life threatening.

Good job, buddy.

So we are planning to have
the vets check it out

and hopefully have it removed.

Oh!

(laughs)

You cheated.

You cheater.

ASHLEY: Henry is my favorite
hornbill, so I'm just worried.

And it's important
to get an answer for him.

(booming)

MELINDA: How's everyone doing?

So how many of you have
walked through Asia today?

And you probably saw
maybe tigers,

or maybe the Komodo dragons, and
you may have seen one of these.

This is Shigu,
one our clouded leopards.

CHILD: Wow!

MELINDA:
Clouded leopards are found

in China and Southeast Asia.

They're very elusive creatures.

They're very shy.

Shigu has a sister named Aiya,

who's also a part
of our program.

LAURYN: Aiya and Shigu,

they were born here
at the zoo on Leap Day.

Clouded leopards have
a special place in my heart.

They are just some of
the most magical animals

that I work with.

I absolutely love them,
and people love them,

and they inspire people,

every single time a person
sees them, they fall in love.

MELINDA:
They're an arboreal cat.

That means that
they love to climb.

She's got that
beautiful, long tail.

Oh! (laughs)

That tail works for balance for
her, because she is a climber.

RONI: So currently
Aiya and Shigu

do not have a permanent place
to call home right now.

But their new habitat
is in construction

and they're gonna have
lots of room.

SUE: I'd like to run
a PVC pole,

like if we connect it up high
and, like, to this hole.

RONI: It's a lot of
really new things for them,

so we're gonna have to work
really hard to get them

comfortable to all the new
things in their home.

Who's a good girl?

KATELYNN: You gonna come up
and say hi?

Piggy kisses?

Piggy kisses? Thank you.

Oh, muddy,
I don't want your kisses.

ANGELA: He's here.

KAELA: Yay! Woo.

CHRIS: So, Kacey the sun bear,

he's just coming to us
from Arkansas.

Real plan today is just to get
him into his new night house.

It's a nice, warm space for him.

KAELA: Hi, Kacey.

I'm excited to meet him.

Hopefully he's friendly and fun.

Expecting big things from him.

CHRIS: Swing it
straight in, straight.

Straighten it, bring it up.

ANGELA: It's a pretty tight
squeeze, but.

CHRIS: Watch your fingers.

Oh, my god!

So this has been a long
transport for Kacey.

The sooner he's out,
the better it is for him,

better it is for everybody.
You good?

ANGELA: You're doing good,
Kacey boy.

CHRIS: Alright?

Hold up, whoa!

Transport directly into
the building is not gonna work.

The crate isn't gonna fit.

So, we got 2x4s I can use?

Because I'm gonna use to brace
that so it doesn't hit the pins.

If that transfer crate
isn't secured properly,

Kacey potentially could push it
out of place and get out.

Do you have any more
wood cut over there?

Let me get two more
of those, please.

So we have to attach the crate
directly to the building.

We have to make sure we set up
a safe chute system for him.

KAELA: While they were
fashioning the crate

to the chute system,

I went and got
some peanut butter

to try to feed him.

Oh, yeah, that's good.

ANGELA: Good boy.

KAELA: Just to try
and keep him occupied

while there were
some noises going on.

He likes peanut butter.

CHRIS: Who doesn't?

ANGELA: True.

KAELA: Is that yummy?

Look at that cute little tongue.

(laughs)

KP: Their tongues are so long.

CHRIS: Let's get ready
to do this.

There's some unpredictability,

with a new animal
in a new situation.

Kacey doesn't quite
know what to expect,

so we have to plan for
anything that could happen.

Okay, so if he pushes back
on it at all,

there's a 10,000-pound
breaking strength on the strap.

Let's go ahead and
get in position, guys.

I'll be on top of the crate,

opening the door for him
to go out into the chute.

The team's gonna be
on the other side,

trying to coax him
into the building.

If he starts pushing back
on the containment,

we may have to exit
out of the habitat.

One, two, three.

KP: Open!

CHRIS: One, two, three.

KP: Open!

ANGELA: There he is. Hi!

JENNY: Oh, my goodness,
you're so cute.

ANGELA: You are too much.

KAELA: The gate to the crate
was open,

and he came into the building.

He did investigate.

He stood up and sniffed.

ANGELA: Oh, Kacey,
you're adorable.

(sniffing)

JENNY: He's so little.

KAELA: He is smaller
than I expected,

but he is just as cute
as I imagined, if not cuter.

Oh, that's good.

He likes honey water.

He's secured inside.

JENNY: 10-4.

He took his time
a little bit coming in.

He had to explore a little bit.

KAELA: Kacey, I'm a fan.

JENNY: But he went straight
for a hard boiled egg.

KAELA: Ooh, is that yummy?

CHRIS: Alright, let's take
a look at this guy.

He doesn't seem
too bothered right now.

KAELA: No.

ANGELA:
Oh, he's gonna crack it now.

KATELYNN: Oh, is that good?

ANGELA: Uh-oh!

JENNY: He dropped it.

So we're gonna have him stay
inside for just a little bit

so he can acclimate,

get used to the staff
that's taking care of him.

KP: Yeah. Welcome.

JENNY: Look at that tongue.

KP: That's good stuff.

JENNY: Eventually we will
be able to let him outside.

KP: We love you already.

ANGELA: Seriously.

(snorting)

KAITLYN: Up!

Oh, is that a good spot?

You leaning into it?

BLAYNE: Good girl!

Whoa!

JAIME: Yona?

C'mon, Redington.

These are red wolves.

The mom's name is Yona,
she's five years old.

This is her first
litter of pups.

Yona is an excellent mom.

Bringing them food, watching
over them, very cautious.

It's really remarkable watching
the growth of the pups.

TIFFANY: It is important that
they separate at two years.

This is something that they
would naturally do in the wild.

Girls, just go in the back
right now,

make this easy on everyone.

Yona and Boca are female wolves,
and today they are leaving.

LISA: Boca is the easiest
to tell apart

because she has
a little floppy ear.

They're part of
a really important program

called the Species Survival Plan.

TIFFANY: The hope is that
they get paired with a male

and then have their own litters,

to help contribute
to the red wolf population.

LISA: It's happy and sad.

We watched them grow up,
so we got to know them,

so it's gonna be sad
to see them leave,

but we're excited to hear
about their futures.

Red wolves are
a critically endangered species

to North America, so we're
hoping to grow the population.

Hopefully we can have red wolves
around for years to come.

TIFFANY: We're gonna walk into
the habitat with cleaning tools.

It's something
that they're used to

and completely normal
for the wolves.

We're gonna close a few doors,

that way we can get them
to a smaller space,

to get both Yona and Boca
in kennels.

They're all under their hole.

We don't train
with our red wolves.

We are part of
a rehabilitation program,

so we hope someday
we'll reintroduce them

back into the wild.

LISA: You're good.

TIFFANY: It does
make it challenging,

because we do need them
to get into a kennel.

LISA: Erinn?
ERINN: Yeah.

LISA: We're actually gonna
run around toward side yard

and see if they'll run
into the building,

if you wanna shut
the last den door.

ERINN: Last den door, okay.

Oh, jeez!

LISA: You can do it.

ERINN: There you go.

Ready?

LISA: You're good.

TIFFANY: Nice.

ERINN: (laughs) That was hard.

LISA: It's pretty natural
for them to wanna hunker down

in quiet, dark places,

so the crates were
pretty inviting for them.

TIFFANY: Good? Now, Boca.

Alright.

We have Yona and Boca
in their crates.

LISA: It's bittersweet
moving Yona and Boca.

TIFFANY: It's always hard
to say goodbye,

but it's what's best for
the population of red wolves.

Alright.

The girls did very well.

LISA: Yeah.

(squawking)

MACAW: Hello!

RONI: Good job.

NATHAN:
Now, before I get started,

who is afraid of spiders?

(laughs)

This is Chaco, and Chaco
is a golden knee tarantula.

BOY: It's poisonous!

NATHAN: She's not poisonous.

BOY: Is he gonna bite you?

NATHAN: She's not gonna bite me.

BOY: Do they, do they,
do they drink your blood?

NATHAN: She doesn't
drink your blood.

I come out here with tarantulas
and most people will run away.

They get scared,
they get nervous.

It is that challenge I do enjoy.

BOY: Is it soft?

NATHAN: So, she's not,
like, she's kinda fuzzy

is the best way to explain it.

And I like to try
and bring them in,

kinda show them, hey, guys,
they're cool, they're not scary,

they're important, they have
a major role in the ecosystem.

BOY: Why does she
have hair on her arms?

NATHAN: Oh, that's actually
a really good question.

If she gets nervous,

she can actually kind of
throw these hairs

at whatever's chasing her,
to try to scare them away.

And if that doesn't work,
then she would potentially bite.

Oh, look, she kind of
pooped everywhere.

That's always fun.

BOY: Can I see?

NATHAN: Do you wanna
see the spider poop?

It's right there.

(kids laughing)

SUE: Ooh! Do you want
some more snacks?

TESSA: Hey, boys.

Fruit bats eat exactly
what their name says they eat;

they eat fruit.

Apple, banana, pear,
grape, papaya, mango.

It's something that I could
probably serve anyone

and they would eat it.

Hiccup is one of our older

African straw-colored
fruit bats.

He's about 19 years old
currently.

Here we go, good boy.

We check weights
on all of our animals

to kind of help
monitor them over time,

and when we weighed Hiccup,
he had dropped quite a bit.

MICAH: Hi.

Watch your foot.

So Hiccup is coming in
to our vet clinic.

I'm hoping that Dr. Lauren
will find an underlying cause

as to why Hiccup is
losing this weight.

You okay?

DR. LAUREN: Hey, guys,
how's it going?

JULIE: Good.
MICAH: Hello.

DR. LAUREN:
Alright, how is Hiccup?

MICAH: So right now, we are
concerned about his weight loss.

DR. LAUREN: Alright,
his weight was 260?

JULIE: 247.

DR. LAUREN: 247? Okay.
JULIE: Yeah.

DR. LAUREN: These animals weigh
only a little over 300 grams.

For him to be down
in the mid 200s

is a significant weight loss,
for sure.

Hiccup's a pretty cool
little bat.

He's had a long history with us.

He's got an amputated foot.

He's got an old healed fracture.

These things will take a toll
on you over time,

and maybe that is what
we're dealing with.

RYAN: If you guys
wanna hold on to him,

I'll work the anesthesia.

JULIE: Okay. You wanna do
the honors, Micah?

MICAH: Mm-hmm.

Alright, buddy.

RYAN: Alright, little buddy,
rrr, in the mask we go.

JULIE: He went out quickly.

MICAH: Yeah.

DR. LAUREN: He doesn't really
have any wing tears, does he?

JULIE: Oh, that's good, yeah.

DR. LAUREN:
You got these beautiful

membranous patagium wings,

and then, so this is, you know,

their humerus
and their forearm,

so the equivalent
of this on a person.

And imagine I have all this
webbing between my fingers,

these are his hands right here.

JULIE: Does he seem
super skinny to you?

DR. LAUREN: I think he's thin.
JULIE: Okay.

DR. LAUREN: I do.
I can see his sternum.

JULIE: Yeah.

DR. LAUREN:
Weight loss in an animal

can actually be
any number of things.

RYAN: Do you want ultrasound
out for him?

DR. LAUREN: Yes, please.

These bats can live
into their upper 20s.

Hiccup is 19, so he's definitely
an older animal at this point.

I'd like to look at his abdomen,

see if, you know, I can pick up
on anything abnormal.

I'm also focusing on the heart

to see how well
it's functioning.

This looks a bit abnormal to me.

DR. LAUREN: That's not normal.

See how it's just kind of
vibrating like that?

JULIE: Mm-hm.

DR. LAUREN: I know I haven't
seen that in the past.

MICAH: I'm very concerned
about Hiccup.

There's a lot of stuff
going on with him.

I am hoping that Dr. Lauren
will find an underlying cause

as to why Hiccup is
losing this weight.

DR. LAUREN: The ventricles
should really move together,

and so I'm wondering if he's got
underlying cardiac issues.

I'm gonna go ahead
and wake him up.

He's been down for a good while.

What's most important is that we
not keep him down for too long.

RYAN: Ooh!

DR. LAUREN:
Hi, sweet little man.

MICAH: Yeah, you're
waking up now?

Hello.

RYAN: Big stretch.
JULIE: There we go.

DR. LAUREN: He's like,
"Micah, what happened?"

MICAH: I know. Good morning.

Your ears are going crazy.

DR. LAUREN: I love the ears.

MICAH: Yeah.

DR. LAUREN: Heart disease
can contribute

to overall weight loss
in our patients.

So we're gonna start him
on a low dose of heart meds

to see how he responds.

MICAH: For the weight loss,
we're gonna address it

by pretty much giving him
more treats.

His favorites, like bananas,
figs and baby food.

Really spoiling him.

We're always rooting for him.

He is a fighter and we're gonna
support him all the way.

(crowd oohs)

(growl)

KAELA: Hi.
MARIE: Hi. JENNY: Hey.

KAELA: Are you ready to try
some training sessions?

MARIE: Yeah, let's do it.
KAELA: Where's Kacey?

JENNY: We brought some goodies.

KAELA: Are you ready? You are?

Kacey's been here
for a few days.

We are all spending time
with him daily.

He has been inside,

we're still working on
our relationship with him.

JENNY: There's a very large
space that he has outside.

There are climbing features.

There are platforms
for him to explore.

There's two large pools
and a waterfall.

KAELA: If we shifted Kacey
outside right now,

he may go out there and
just spend all day and night

out there,
and he may not come back.

So we are working on
getting Kacey to come over

each time he's asked.

MARIE: We brought
peanut butter and honey.

JENNY: Does that
sound good to you, bud?

(laughing)

KAELA: Marie,
do you wanna do it?

MARIE: Sure. Yeah.
KAELA: To start off.

MARIE: Kacey is a big animal,
he is over 200 pounds.

We don't go in with him,

so we need to make sure that
he is responding to us reliably.

(whistle tweets)

Oh, my gosh.

JENNY: Oh, look at that.

KAELA: Kacey has
a really long tongue.

In the wild, sun bears
use those long tongues

to get honey from beehives.

It's really fun
to watch him eat.

He will stick it through and
just lap up whatever he can.

(whistle tweets)

And if you get too close,
he also sneak attacks you

and gives you a little kiss
with that tongue as well.

He seems very motivated,
which is good.

(whistle tweets)

MARIE: Kacey is
really focused on us.

He has done really well.

But when we call his name, we
definitely want him to respond.

Kacey!

I'm gonna try call him
from the back.

JENNY: Okay. That might work.
MARIE: Let's see.

MARIE: Kacey!

♪ ♪

KAELA: Yay!

JENNY: Nice.

MARIE: Good job, bud.

JENNY: The honey
is his favorite.

KAELA: Love that tongue.

MARIE: Oh, my goodness.
Alright, let's go.

KAELA: Look at that.
He's doing pretty good.

MARIE: I think once
he figured out

what we were asking
and looking for.

He's like, I got this.

I think he should be
ready pretty soon.

KAELA: Me, too.

MARIE: To go out on habitat.

I'm really excited.
I can't wait.

I think he's gonna
really love it out there.

KAELA: Good job, buddy.

JENNY: He did great.

BLAYNE: Hi.

(booming)

CHRISTI: Hey, Henry!

ASHLEY: Henry has
this large mass growing

on one of his wings, so he's
going to have his surgery.

Hi, buddy.

DR. TAMARA: What we can do
is remove the mass

in a controlled fashion, be able
to figure out what it is,

and then get him back
to a normal, happy life.

ASHLEY: There he is,
he's right there.

Hi, buddy.

(booming)

You gonna come down?

Henry's actually
perched up in a tree,

so he's pretty high up,
and he's not coming down.

You're only going higher,
though.

BLAYNE: He went higher?

ASHLEY: Yeah,
he jumped up higher.

CHRISTI: Do I need
to get a mirror?

ASHLEY: Yes.

(booming)

So we are gonna have to
bring out the big guns,

which is one of his favorite
things, it is the mirror.

CHRISTI: Because he likes
to look at himself.

See if that will help him
come down from the tree.

BLAYNE: Ah, Henry,
you're so good.

CHRISTI: Oh, he sees you.

He's coming down.

There we go. Good boy!

BLAYNE: Let's look at it.

Hi, good boy.

I know, go see yourself.

You look so pretty.

ASHLEY: Henry seems to be
really excited right now.

He definitely thinks
he looks good today.

So now is our chance
to get our hands on Henry

and we'll bring him
to the hospital.

BLAYNE: That is so beautiful.

That is so pretty.

Oh, that's a good boy.

ASHLEY: Good boy.

BLAYNE: Got him in hand.
ASHLEY: I got him.

CHRISTI: Your vanity
got you in trouble again.

ASHLEY: Ready?
BLAYNE: Yeah.

DR. TAMARA:
What we're gonna do today

is we're going to sedate him
and take a look at that mass.

Most recently
it's actually gotten bigger.

When a mass is growing quickly,
that is of a concern for us.

CHRISTI: Don't let him get
weight under his feet, though.

ALISON: Alright, I'm gonna start
masking him at two.

DR. TAMARA: Yep.

Ready? Set him on two.

RYAN: Two percent.

DR. TAMARA: There is definitely
all kinds of different things

that it could be.

It could be
an encapsulated infection,

maybe a hematoma,
a follicle cyst.

RYAN: Alright.

DR. TAMARA: Let's get
this thing off of him.

We're gonna do our best to
remove the mass as one lump,

and not leave any pieces behind.

Okay, alright.

Let's get going.

Okay, cutting.

I'm gonna try to carefully
peel the mass away.

It's right up
against certain things

that I wanna try to preserve.

I'm gonna use my fingers,
feel along this edge,

bluntly dissect the mass away
from normal anatomy.

(sighs)

Oh!

Got it.

It's about the size
of a tennis ball.

The problem is now, is that
I've got this big, huge hole.

RYAN: Do you have enough tissue
to close up over there?

DR. TAMARA: (sighs)
No. I can't close it.

ASHLEY: I can't get over
how big that thing is.

BLAYNE: It's huge.

ASHLEY: Dr. Tamara was able
to remove the mass

on Henry's right wing.

We didn't realize
how large it was

and how much of his wing
it actually was taking up.

DR. TAMARA: How do you think
he would be with a bandage?

Do you think he'd just
keep ripping it?

BLAYNE: Yeah.

DR. TAMARA:
That's what I figured.

BLAYNE: Either him
or Hannah would do it.

DR. TAMARA: Okay.

Anything weird or abnormal,

they'll start just
pulling it off,

and that's not gonna
be helpful for us.

So if we remove the skin
from the mass,

we're gonna peel that off
and use it as a graft.

It might give us enough time,
if he leaves it alone.

BLAYNE: Ugh!

DR. TAMARA:
To let it heal on its own.

I think this was
all just an infection.

Just an infection
that's incapsulated.

RYAN: Gross.

BLAYNE: But the skin
is fine to use?

DR. TAMARA: Yeah.

I'm gonna try to
make this tight.

BLAYNE: Okay.

DR. TAMARA: I just have one more
stitch and we're done.

RYAN: We got him.

DR. TAMARA: I am gonna stick him
on longer antibiotics.

BLAYNE: Okay.

LAURYN: Shigu, come!

Today our four-year-old clouded
leopard sisters, Aiya and Shigu,

are gonna see their new habitat
for the very first time.

There's a lot of anticipation.

They're kind of like
our little babies growing up.

Hi.

RONI: Hi, beautiful.

LAURYN: Are you
such a good girl?

I'm just really excited
to see how it goes.

Can't wait to see them
take their first steps

out into the habitat and just
see what they think of it.

RONI: That's a good girl.

LAURYN: You ready?

RONI: We not only have
to get them desensitized

or used to everything

that's gonna be in
their actual habitat,

but also everything that
is going to be around it.

(beeping)

(meow)

LAURYN: I think she is
nervous of that noise.

RONI: Aiya is
a little bit more shy,

so we're gonna leave Aiya
in the kennel.

(meow)

But Shigu, we're actually gonna
see if she wants to explore

the habitat
a little bit more today.

Hi, chubbers.

SUE: You got your friend here.

LAURYN: Hi.

You ready?

LAURYN: Shigu, come!

SUE: It's okay, mama.

BLAYNE: We're just gonna
kinda let her walk around

and explore things.

(whistle tweets)
RONI: Oh, you're so good.

LAURYN: You're so cute.

(laughs)

What is that?

There's water in there.

RONI: Shigu's doing really well.

She came out and just kind of
took everything in at first.

LAURYN: Good girl.

RONI: She actually even
went up to the viewing area

of our habitat and kind of
gave her two cents.

(hiss)

LAURYN: Oh, no.

It's okay.

We keep the sessions short,
to keep them positive,

because if we keep them too long
they might get more nervous.

(whistle tweets)
RONI: Good girl.

SUE: We just need to get
the last minute touches

on their habitat,
so they can get fully moved in.

LAURYN: Good girl.

(yawns)

RONI: Oh, my goodness.

ERINN: Harriet!
(whistle tweets)

LISA: Indy definitely
found the fish right away.

He's eating some.

ERINN: Keep him engaged
for a little while.

TESSA: Hey, boys.

MICAH: Hi, buddies.

TESSA: How you guys doing today?

Hey, Hic!

How was his procedure yesterday?

MICAH: Dr. Lauren
found that Hiccup

actually has an irregularity
with his heartbeat.

Instead of
a good, clear contraction,

it was kind of vibrating.

TESSA: Okay.

MICAH: Sort of like fluttering.

And that is
a real concern for us

and that could be a cause
for his weight loss.

TESSA: Did she say anything
about having to do

medications with him
in the future for his heart?

MICAH: For his heart, yeah,
we're gonna look at medication.

We might start today.

TESSA: Okay.

I am pretty worried
about Hiccup.

I was a little bit
surprised to hear

what they had found
on the workup yesterday.

I wasn't really expecting that.

MICAH: And as far as trying
to get weight on him,

I'm thinking extra snacks
and just upping his food.

TESSA: You're in your
happy place right now?

Surrounded by banana
and baby food?

MICAH: His cheeks are stuffed.

TESSA: Like a little chipmunk.

TESSA: Hiccup's always been
a really good bat,

really good fighter, really
great spirit all the time.

Moving forward for Hiccup,

Dr. Lauren mentioned wanting to
move him to a different habitat.

It'll really help us monitor him
and see how he's doing.

JENNY: It took a lot of work
to get to this point,

and we've built a lot of
our relationship with Kacey.

we've come really far.

It's natural for them
to want to start breaking away

from their family group to go on
and find their own companion.

As much as I'll miss
Yona and Boca,

I know that her sons
are gonna do great

and continue on for
hopefully more generations.

for the conservation
of the species,

she came right out,

started exploring a little bit.

Shigu's definitely our rock star
when coming to new areas.

Aiya's always a little bit
more nervous than Shigu is.

are exploring a little bit.

It is completely adorable
when Shigu goes up to the front

and she puts her little feet
on the bar up there.

We have like a little board
that she goes up on.

LAURYN: One of the reasons
we come to work every day

is to work with these animals
and build the relationship

where our relationship
helps them be comfortable

in these types of situations.

exciting and rewarding

to see them in this house today.

Makes all the work worth it.

RONI: If you have a housewarming

The plan for today
is for the team

to actually get hands on Henry,
our ground hornbill.

He had surgery a couple weeks
back and a mass was removed,

and so we just wanna make sure

that that site is
healed up appropriately.

BLAYNE: Hi, bud! Hello.

BRANDI: Do you wanna
catch him today?

BLAYNE: Yep.

BRANDI: We'll just be
your backup.

BLAYNE: Okay.

BRANDI: Your spotters,
so as soon as you get his beak,

we'll help you control wings and
then we'll take him to the barn.

BLAYNE: Okay.

DR. LAUREN: I think Henry
knows our intent.

Be really careful with him.

He's a very charismatic,
wonderful bird,

but he will peck your eye out.

Henry has a really large bill.

The team's gonna catch him up,
and we're gonna do this safely,

because he's a strong
little bird.

BLAYNE: What you doing?

BRANDI: He's like...

was super smooth,

and we just really wanna make
sure that the skin is healed up.

his right wing,

so we'll need to pass off
to Madison maybe.

The closure on the surgical site

previously was
a little challenging,

the graft was placed over,

and we just really
wanna make sure

that there's no inflammation

and it's just
completely healed over,

so that's the goal for today.

MADISON: Good job, bud.

We can't keep him out on the
habitat like we normally would,

so the staff has made
a smaller habitat for him.

DR. LAUREN: He's been on meds
for a couple months now,

and so we're just gonna check in
and see how he's doing.

Hey, Tessa, how's Hiccup doing?

TESSA: Oh, he's doing wonderful.

He's clearly enjoying
his banana treats right now.

(laughs)

DR. LAUREN: Yeah,
he likes his bananas.

TESSA: Oh, absolutely.

TESSA: I figured.

It's always the best part
is getting to feed them.

He's been taking
his meds really well,

and Hiccup's weight gain
has been good?

TESSA: Yes. Yeah, no,
his weight has come back on,

so he's looked really good ever
since we started his medication.

DR. LAUREN:
Hiccup looks fantastic.

The plan for him moving forward
is just monitoring him.

He's gonna be on meds
for the rest of his life.

He seems to be enjoying
his Florida retirement life.

TESSA: Oh, my god, yeah.

It's a really nice relief
to know that we can just focus

on giving him
the best life possible

and making sure that
he has plenty of treats

and good things to enjoy
in his retirement.

DR. LAUREN: Look at his cheeks.

Taking his heart meds,
being retired in Florida.

we all hope for.
