MOLLY: Generally
Florida's pretty warm,

but lately it's been
particularly cold,

especially in the mornings.

Manatees can't tolerate
cold water.

We are looking for this pool,
in particular,

to be nice and toasty for
these three manatees over here

because they are
very compromised

as far being very skinny,
thin, young.

This is a critical care
manatee rehab facility,

where we rescue, rehab
and release

injured, sick
and orphaned manatees.

Now we are incredibly busy
with a lot of new cases.

This is for him.

The emergency blankets
keep them warm

and, because it's
pretty cold out here,

even for people
and for manatees.

LISA: So Opal and Volt came in
for cold stress and emaciation

about two weeks ago.

Molly is passing the tube
through his nose,

down into his stomach, so that
we can give him some fluids,

some milk formula and
some greens that we blended up.

MOLLY: He's incredibly skinny.

You can actually see his ribs,
which is not normal.

You should not see ribs
on a manatee.

If we weren't feeding
these manatees,

they wouldn't survive
at this point.

Opal and Volt are getting fed
four times a day by us.

It will save their lives,

so it kind of can look
a little barbaric,

but it's really important
for their health.

We're going to take them
back down to the warm water,

so they can relax.

Burrkey, he's our youngest calf,
he's about three months old,

and so we're trying
to get him onto a bottle.

So I'm waiting for him
to come up for a breath,

and then we're gonna
try and grab him.

They don't come in
knowing a bottle,

it's something that we have to
condition them towards.

So, Burrkey is rescued
because he didn't have a mom.

It's unfortunate,
he should be with her,

so we're going to do
what we can on our end

to hopefully help him
get better.

LISA: He's not relaxing.

MOLLY: He's a fighter
and he fights us on the floor,

and he doesn't want
anything to do with people.

So, you know, we can
just try him later.

We don't mind,
it's what they need,

and we'll do anything for them,
they're worth it.

CHRIS: Alright,
here you guys are.

We have our
Caribbean flamingos here,

and they are just spectacular.

They're pretty vocal
in the morning.

(chirping)

JASON: And it's really cool.

On these mornings
where it's cool out,

you can see the steam
coming right off the pool.

Yeah, everyone always
thinks of Florida,

they think of sunshine
and beaches

and it's always hot here,

but we actually do get
the occasional cold snap.

When it starts getting below 50
and we're in the 40s,

then we really got to start
looking out for these reptiles.

Good morning, guys.

We need to make sure
that we keep them warm.

Both of our bar heaters
are going.

Oh, look at that face.

Alright, I need to make sure

the Komodo dragon
heat rock's working.

This rock is 90 to 95.

It gives them some good heat.

So we can let a dragon out.

Reptiles, being ectotherms,
their body temperature

is directly dependent
on the external temperature.

In my department, we have,
probably around 300 animals.

JASMINE: Good morning,
Tomistoma.

JASON: And we need to make sure

that all of them are staying
at proper temperatures.

So it gets pretty busy
in the morning,

when we're doing
our cold weather checks.

Come on out.

Once it's 55 and sunny,

we can let these tortoises out
to warm up in the sun a bit.

And you can see they're ready
for it, here comes Al.

KRISTEN: Good morning,
welcome to Expedition Africa.

This next habitat is home
to the African painted dogs.

They're taking a nap

over in the back side of
their habitat in the sunshine.

Working together
in a family unit

makes them extremely successful
when they hunt.

(squeaking)

BRANDI:
We have eight painted dogs.

So we have Hatari
that is our dad,

and then we have
our seven puppies.

Four males, and then we have
three females,

Georgia, Frida and Monet.

Georgia is our alpha female,

so she investigates
everything first.

DR. LAUREN: Oh, my gosh,

they were the smallest
little nuggets, like this big,

and to see them just
kind of grow up

into these beautiful adult dogs,

with these lush tails
and beautiful coats,

and just past
their one year mark

and seeing them interact
and play with each other,

it's so awesome.

♪ ♪

AMANDA:
So, we're really excited,

because we are studying
this enrichment device

for the painted dogs.

It's called the Kerplunk,

so the idea is that they're
going to pull all the sticks out

to get all of the meat
that's inside.

It's definitely something
that's cognitive for them.

It gets their brain working,
which is cool.

BRANDI: So, she can
let the kids know,

but other than that,

I think we're good to lock up
and send them out.

AMANDA: Cool.

BRANDI: African painted dogs
are a top predator of Africa,

so it's really cool to be able
to show the kids

that these aren't
your average dogs,

that they are going
to be aggressive.

They are super cute, but they do
have those really large canines

that could be
pretty scary to kids.

Are you guys ready up there?

AMANDA: Yeah, 10-4.

BRANDI: Go, puppies, go.

Woo-hoo!

(children screaming)

AMANDA: Oh, my gosh,
look at them.

(children screaming
and laughing)

Oh, oh, we're jumping
on the window.

BRANDI: Whoa!

Aw, those kids love it.

Yay, it's like a piñata.

In the wild, they catch their
prey about 80% of the time,

as where lions only catch their
prey about 20% of the time.

So, this is encouraging
all those natural behaviors

that you're not gonna
normally see

without the enrichment given.

So it's really cool to be able
to show the kids

what these dogs
are actually all about.

(children screaming and yelling)

It is definitely
keeper enrichment, yeah.

This is probably going to be
the best thing we see all day.

They're just
really fun to watch.

CHILDREN: Whoa!

(elephant trumpets)

RYANNE: Penguins!

The first thing people think
when you think of penguins

is ice, snow,

but more species live
in warm climates

than the ones that live in cold.

Wendy! Palmira!

The penguins we have
are the African penguin.

They don't like
this cold weather.

No? No fish.

Two capelin for Mimi.
Herring for...

Our oldest penguin, Pepper,
is 19 years old.

Very spirited, she likes to be
involved in everything.

What is this?

Ugh.

Come on, Pepper.

So, Pepper was paired up
with our oldest penguin, Abe,

who was 26, but unfortunately
Abe passed away.

And so she definitely did have
a mourning period after Abe,

and then she found Bolt, a very
rambunctious younger penguin.

Bolt, be nice.

She would definitely be the
cougar of the penguin colony.

(honking)
Be nice. Okay.

Pepper, what are you doing?

We noticed that Pepper
was limping very obviously.

If anything were
to happen to her,

it would definitely be a blow.

She always makes
every day interesting.

I think Bolt
would miss her, too.

(honking)

DR. NICO: We don't know
what's going on with her.

You know, with penguins
at that age,

it could be so many things,

and one of the most common
things that they tend to have

is problem with their feet,

calluses on their feet,

infections of their feet.

RYANNE: You want to come
over here, hon?

DR. NICO: Sometimes
it can be very tricky.

It looks like her left.

RYANNE: Uh-huh.

DR. NICO: Can you grab her?

RYANNE:
I want to get her this way.

I know, mama, I'm sorry.

DR. NICO:
Ah, yeah, she's hurting.

And you can tell
that when she walks

she's completely different
than the other penguins.

She's lame, she's slow.

She does not look good.

So I just want
to check her feet,

make sure that there's nothing
obvious on her feet.

Okay, okay, okay, okay,

we're almost done,
we're almost done.

Anything at this point
is possible on an animal

that is, you know, that age.

Can you put her down?

There we go.

That was, I'm sorry.

That's good.

Sorry I hurt your feelings.

Thankfully we don't have
any lesions on her feet,

which is a plus.

But then now what?

I have a feeling that this is
all arthritis coming up on her.

With the weather changes, I'm
gonna blame it to that for now.

So, we're going to be
taking some x-rays on her

and then find out if the story
match, you know,

if arthritis is part
of her problem,

and we can try to help.

(birds calling)

DR. LAUREN: Hey, good morning.

How are you guys doing?

Burrkey is an orphan calf,
and he came in cold stress.

He was trying to make it
and survive out in the wild,

but it wasn't going to be long
before, you know,

he was gonna be
in a really bad state.

He came to us
on Thanksgiving Eve,

and we didn't want to
name him Turkey.

MOLLY: Oh, he's cold,
we should name him Burrkey,

so he needed a kind of
a cutesy name,

because he's
super cute, too, so.

DR. LAUREN: And the team's
working really hard

on getting him on the bottle.

Just try and maximize the time
that you guys are in here,

be offering the bottle
every hour.

So, if we can get him
onto the bottle,

that's way less stress on him,

and so that's what we're
trying to go for.

MOLLY: That's what we're going
to do all day

is just try to take
opportunities

when he's pretty relaxed and
he wasn't squirming and calm,

and try the bottle, all day.

LISA: No. I wish.

MOLLY: What we're trying to do
with Burrkey

is he needs to get
onto a bottle.

He didn't take anything.

So, sometimes, even if
the bottle's in their mouth,

they'll be squeezing the nipple
and milk's pouring out,

but they're not
actively swallowing,

so that's something we're
feeling for under their chin.

LISA: Yeah, he's just
not staying with it.

MOLLY: It's hard for us,
because we always say, like,

"Oh, they're so cute."

But it's sort of sad
at the same time,

because I wish he was
with his mom.

If we can get him on a bottle,
because he's small enough,

then that will make his life
less stressful.

It's just in general
what's best for him.

DR. LAUREN: Alright, I think
you got everything then, yeah.

We should be set for now.

Because Burrkey's not yet
taking in the amount of food

that he needs on the bottle,

I'm recommending that we
tube him in this instance,

because he's got
to get the food.

Burrkey's a little pistol.

He does not like to be handled.

He doesn't want to be touched,
which is actually really good.

That just shows that he's
an independent wild manatee.

And we want him to be
released out,

so this will be good for him,

when he gets released
out in the wild.

We get calves in this young,
they can be very precarious.

They are really
challenging cases.

I want to see that, first,
he's getting the food he needs,

but also he starts
to gain weight.

MOLLY: If we can get Burrkey to
start taking a bottle regularly,

he'll be able to go out
to the front pools

and be a normal manatee

and be with our other animals
who are closer to release.

♪ ♪

KRISTINA: They can eat
about 16 hours a day.

He says yeah, conveyor belt,
bring it all in.

BRIANNE: Keep it going.
Keep it going.

KRISTINA: Yeah.

AMANDA: Hi, guys.

Aw, you guys are so cute.

BRANDI: It's kind of crazy
having eight dogs,

especially with seven puppies,

and they're just
growing so fast.

There's only about
5,000 painted dogs left

in all of Africa,

and Hatari is the second most
valuable here in North America.

So, him having these offspring

was super important
to their population.

We can open up, if you guys want
to start getting stuff ready.

AMANDA: Yeah, I'll start
getting ready.

BRANDI: But we don't want
his pups to breed quite yet.

MADISON: Hi, guys.

BRANDI: So we're actually going
to have to give our females

some contraceptive
through their food.

AMANDA: We want to make sure
that the females

wouldn't accidentally breed

with the males
that are related to them.

BRANDI: So we'll need to check
to make sure

that the birth control
is working,

and we'll actually do that
through their fecal.

So, obviously,
having eight dogs,

you can't really see
who's pooping where.

AMANDA: So, in order
to differentiate

their fecal matter,

we're going to be adding
food coloring

to all of their diet,
the three females.

So, I brought the food coloring.

So, we'll know
whose poop is whose,

and we'll actually
be able to test it,

to know that the birth control
is in their system.

Do Georgia, since my hands
are green already.

BRANDI: (laughs)
That sounds good.

AMANDA: So, today we have
decided three different colors

for three different
female painted dogs.

Who was red?

BRANDI: Frida.
CYDNEY: Rainbow poop.

AMANDA: Georgia, our alpha
female, will be getting green,

then Frida will be getting
a red dye,

and Monet will be getting
the black dye.

CYDNEY: That looks nasty.

MADISON: The black one.
That's really scary.

AMANDA: You don't like
the black one?

MADISON: Yeah.

AMANDA: So we're hoping to get
a recommendation

for the females to move
to a new home, a new facility,

where they can start
a pack of their own.

MADISON: Georgia, let's go.

Good girl, come on.

Georgia's like, "Nope, I'm gonna
lay here and eat a plant."

BRANDI: Frida, Frida,
where are you?

They're very, very,
very excited this evening.

(whistle tweets)

Good job.

You're silly.

Painted dogs
are very big talkers,

constantly communicating
between one another.

They have a lot
of different vocalizations

that kind of sound
like chirping noises.

(chirping)

Good communication really
helps them be such good hunters.

AMANDA: Good girl.

BRANDI: Last one.

MADISON: It's okay.
BRANDI: I'm up.

MADISON:
See you tomorrow, puppies.

CYDNEY: Sleep tight.

DEVON: We are going to do
Goyang's nebulizing treatment.

He's our adult male orangutan.

We have a special place
in our heart for Goyang.

He's an amazing dad.
He has a great personality.

It's about a 45-minute treatment
to get him some meds

for some respiratory issues
that he's dealing with.

It's surprisingly cold
in Florida,

and we do see an increase
in sneezing, stuffy noses

with orangutans in the winter.

So we want to make sure

that it's not making
his symptoms any worse.

He is ready for this.
Every day he meets us here.

He basically beats us here
each day.

Hi, Randy.

So, this is Gojo, his three,
almost four-year-old son,

and then this is Randy,
she's 11,

and we call these guys
the Three Amigos,

and they usually
keep him company

for his nebulizing treatments.

The nebulizer makes it a lot
easier for him to breathe,

so it really clears up
all the mucus.

We do it twice a day,
for 45 minutes each time.

He seems to like it.

Good boy.

He picked up on it
really quickly.

It was like
three training sessions

and he was breathing it
the right way.

But we just start increasing it
in very, very small increments.

(spitting)

The big deal is try
to figure out

how to increase his duration,

so having him sit here
for 45 minutes

and doing it
for a longer increment.

So, obviously,
that spitting is like,

"Stop talking and get back
to my treatment."

So he's eager to do it, so.

JAIME: We got a call
from Florida Fish and Wildlife

that there was an injured
manatee, a boat strike,

pretty large gash
across its back.

It's in transport now,

so should be getting here
later on tonight.

(thunder)

MOLLY: The team is here
to accept that animal.

We usually have to have
quite a few people.

Then hopefully be able
to use the crane

and put him into the water,
it just depends on lightning.

(thunder)

MOLLY: The team
is completely committed

and are willing to drop
what they're doing

and stay for these animals.

♪ ♪

JAIME: Do you know male
or female or anything?

SEAN: I don't know
if it's a male or female.

MOLLY: We'll be here
as long as it takes,

to be with the animal

and make sure that it's
settled in the water

and can get breaths
and is normal

before we ever
walk away from it.

DR. LAUREN: (gasps) Oh.

MOLLY: Oh.

MOLLY: Oh, jeez.

JAIME: Ugh, yeah.

MOLLY: This manatee has
a pretty big wound on her back.

JAIME: Mouth temp 98.4.

MOLLY: A lot of bad things can
come from that with infection

and whatever has been torn
inside of her.

JAIME: And, Natalie, breaths
are three and five minutes.

DR. LAUREN: It's right over
where the spine lies.

I just want to make sure
it doesn't run too deep.

Um, talking to the biologist,

this is the part of the animal
that was buoyant in the water,

so I do suspect there's
underlying lung trauma.

Um, I can do a little bit
of a lidocaine block on it,

but I don't want to get
too aggressive on it.

It's just too painful.

MOLLY: Tiny flippers,
so it's probably a girl.

JAIME: Okay, going down.

WOMAN: One, two, three.

JAIME: Alright.

MOLLY: Yeah, we see boat strikes
all year round.

So many are killed in the wild,

you know, their population
has been endangered.

They've made a small rebound,
but we're continuing to see

so many cases coming
into our hospitals.

Okay, let it go.

There's more people
in Florida, more boaters.

Manatees don't move very fast.

They need a chance to get
out of the way of boaters,

so if you can slow down
in those areas,

that's something you can do
to really help protect them.

To actually have
a slice like that,

that means that someone
was going pretty quick.

She definitely didn't
have time to get away.

It's pretty terrible.

DR. LAUREN: You have that honey?

So, right now I'm just
packing the wound.

I'm going to put some honey

on the contact layer
of the lap sponge.

That just has some really nice
therapeutic properties

to help with infection
and tissue healing.

I'm not seeing bubble
or escape of gas or air

coming out of this wound,

so that makes me think
that, you know,

it's not connected to an airway.

So, hopefully, this is just
through muscle and soft tissue

and that it will heal
and ingranulate.

That's the best-case scenario
for her.

We're going to be
keeping a watch on her.

The team's gonna take shifts

and watch her throughout
the entire night.

COLLIN: Josie,
what are you doing?

It's freezing, get inside.

Josie is Gojo's mom,
and she has decided

she does not want to go
inside right now.

So, since mom's
not going inside,

baby's not leaving her side.

For whatever reason,
Josie is happier outside.

If she wanted to go inside
and warm up,

she could do that as well.

There's nothing like some
quality mother/son time.

AMANDA: Good morning,

KRISTIN:
Favorite part of the day.

AMANDA: Alright, so let's go
check locks over here,

so that way we can shift them.

BRANDI: We always make sure
that we play it safe

because, as cute and
puppy-like as they are,

they are very much
still wild dogs

that could essentially be
very aggressive.

AMANDA: So, every time
we interact with them,

we're always counting
for eight dogs.

We have two locks
that go on each door.

We're hoping
to set food in here,

so that way we can try
and get them inside,

that way we can go out
and service their habitat.

That's the goal. (laughs)

Okay.

KRISTIN: There we go.
(laughs)

One, two, three,

I see six.

AMANDA: I think there's one
in here hiding.

KRISTIN: No, yeah.
Five, six, seven. We're good.

AMANDA: Okay.
KRISTIN: Alright.

AMANDA: Start cleaning.
KRISTIN: Let's clean.

AMANDA: So, we're kind of going
on a treasure hunt right now,

looking for rainbow
(laughs) dog fecal.

You know, not something
you find every day.

That just looks normal. Yeah.

But we're really excited,

because it's going to help us
identify each dog...

KRISTIN:
That's definitely not colored.

AMANDA: Yeah, it's normal.

...that it's coming from,

and then we can test it
and their hormone levels,

and really find out
a lot about them

just by looking at their fecal.

Ooh!

We are looking for green
for Georgia,

red for Frida,
and black for Monet.

That's a maybe.
That one's definitely.

KRISTIN: Oh, no, there's a small
piece there that looks green.

AMANDA: I was gonna say,
this one is definitely green.

KRISTIN: Yeah, that's green.
Green again.

AMANDA:
Man, Georgia's going crazy.

(laughs)

We have found the green
for sure.

So, the green is like
old news to us,

we're really looking for that
red or the black color now.

I don't know.

KRISTIN: I think I might have
found black poop.

(Amanda gasps)
KRISTIN: What do you think?

AMANDA: Ooh, yay.

Ooh, is that red?

KRISTIN: That looks like
it might be red.

AMANDA:
Yeah, that's red, for sure.

Yay.

Red, green, black.

We got it. (laughs)

BRANDI: With the right poop,

the clinic can really monitor
those hormone levels

and make sure that the females
are where they need to be.

AMANDA: It's a good day.
KRISTIN: I know.

RYANNE: Today, Pepper
the penguin is going to clinic

with a unexplained limp,

and I think her mate,
Bolt, misses her.

DR. NICO: So, we had to bring
Pepper to the clinic

to find out whether if arthritis
is part of her problem,

so we're going to do
some x-rays today.

RYAN: Pepper's one
of our older penguins,

so trying to reduce the need

for any kind of anesthetic
or sedative drug on her.

RYANNE: Come on, Pepper.

RYAN: So I rigged up this box

to keep Pepper in line
with our x-rays.

RYANNE: That just keeps Pepper
in front of the film.

Just to get what we need to get,

without stressing them out
at all.

RYAN: I think we want
to do a side view.

Oh, Pepper, you might be
in a great spot right there.

RYANNE: Perfect.
RYAN: Shooting.

RYANNE: And the penguin box
actually helps immensely.

So we got the side view perfect,
but now we need the back view.

RYAN: We just need to rotate her
a little more on her left side.

Almost there. Keep going.

RYANNE: Can you just turn?
You're alright, okay.

RYAN: We've got limitations.

Oh, yeah.
Perfect right now.

Shooting.

RYAN: That was perfect.

She's like, "If you guys would
just tell me what you want."

Yeah.

RYANNE: Alright.

DR. TAMARA: We don't know why

she seems to be a little wobbly
when she stands.

It could be because
of the colder weather.

She's an older penguin.

Since we have previous x-rays
from two years ago,

we can compare it to today
and see, okay,

what's different between
two years ago, versus now,

when she's having a stiff gait.

Feet look great.

That's really good for the feet.

The hips at least look the same.

Knees look pretty good, too.

Last year's back.

Today's back.

Ooh. Oh.

DR. TAMARA: So, I'm looking at
Pepper penguin's radiographs.

Oh.

And I can actually see
a huge difference

between today and two years ago.

I think that we have
our answer, then.

You can tell that there's
a little bit more narrowing.

And she's what, she's 19? Yeah?

DR. NICO: She does have some
changes to her lower spine

that confirm our suspicions
that she has some arthritis.

And of course,
it's uncomfortable,

especially if you,
you know, overdo it.

RYANNE: Are you guys
ready to go outside?

Come on, baby girl.

DR. NICO: What I'm thinking
is happening with her

is just that at night,

things might get heated
in the penguin house. (laughs)

(honking)

I have a feeling that they
were having too much fun.

He's a young male
on an older female,

mating too aggressively, too,

and that she probably
hurt her back.

So, my instructions
to the keeper is like,

unfortunately, Pepper,
we cannot let you spend

any more time
with this young guy.

Let's just keep you apart
for a couple of days,

and let's see also with the help
of the medication,

if you start feeling better.

LAURYN: Do you want to guess
how old she is?

How old do you think she is?

GIRL: Two.
LAURYN: Two?

She's way older than that.

She is 38 years old.

Magoo is a goof ball.

She loves her life here,

because she gets so much
attention from us.

I literally get paid
to hang out with Magoo,

which is one of my
favorite things to do.

And she gets to come out
and interact with people

and inspire them
to want to help macaws

and animals that live
in the rainforest.

MOLLY: Yeah, she looks good.

Our boat strike manatee
came in last night,

and she made it through
the night, which is great.

She can swim.

She has a terrible wound
on her back,

and yet she is still alive,

she is still fighting
to keep her life going.

JAIME: We are seeing, too, she's
been defecating and having gas,

like a lot, actually.

MOLLY: Gas is encouraging
that at least the propeller

did not tear into her intestines

and that things are still
moving properly.

Hi, pumpkin.

Her eyes are wide.

More alert than last night.

DR. TAMARA: I know, sweetheart.

JAIME: We've had others
that have had wounds like hers

that have survived.

DR. TAMARA: I'll be gentle.

JAIME: And, you know,
I just really hope

that she can pull through
this injury.

DR. TAMARA: Okay.

BRANDI: You're okay.

MOLLY: Oh, shoot.

JAIME: Bubbling.
BRANDI: Yeah.

JAIME: Yeah, there's
a little right there.

DR. TAMARA:
Yes, they're bubbles.

MOLLY: That's not really
not a good sign.

That means that now
there's a hole,

and it's really concerning

that there could be
several tears in there.

JAIME: Air to their chest cavity
causes them

to be positively buoyant,
on top of the water column,

which is very affecting,

'cause a lot of their food
grows on the bottom.

MOLLY: So, we really need
her body to fix that,

so we may have to give her
some supplemental care,

where we may have to tube her
some fluids or nutrition

just to keep her stable

and let her body heal
sort of on its own.

Hopefully, she's gonna be okay.

JANE: Hi, colobus,
where are you?

Alright, you ready
to give the colobus

some peanuts for a treat?

DEVON: Yes.

JANE: I think everybody's out.

DEVON: One, two, three,

CHRISTI: So, today,
we're separating out

our three female
African painted dogs,

they're Georgia,

And we're gonna immobilize them

for birth control implants
today.

DR. LAUREN: The staff
has been very successful

in getting the oral
contraceptive to the girls,

and so now we're getting ready
to take the next step,

which involves us actually
getting hands on them

and placing an implant.

It's a more long-acting,
reliable contraceptive.

CHRISTI: The bunnies are
in the tub for the boys.

It's all hands on deck,
everyone's here.

We had 12 Africa people
here today

and like, four or five vets
here today.

I mean, yeah, this is a big one.

It's game day. (laughs)

MIKE: First dog that
gets immobilized

is actually gonna come out.

The painted dogs are,
we consider them red animals;

they're a Class I animal.

So we are gonna be taking them
out of their holding today.

MADISON: Pepper sprays on.
We got it.

DR. LAUREN: African painted dogs
are very dangerous,

and we can't handle them
all the time.

So we have not had hands
on these animals

since they were
little, little puppies.

So they need to have
this implant,

but we're also gonna
take this time

to give them
an overall health assessment.

BRANDI: Oh, that's Mo
right there.

CHRISTI:
Weed 'em out right here?

BRANDI: Yeah.
The one in the back.

Let's go, Georgie.

MIKE: So the plan will be
to first get the females

separated from the entire pack.

CHRISTI: Come on, girlfriend.

BRANDI: She's like,
"Uh, no, thank you."

CHRISTI:
They're very, very smart,

so they will be very aware
that something is going on.

Perfect.

MADISON: Good job.

MIKE: Uh, good, all the girls
are separated.

We've got the first female

on the one paddock
where we need her.

CHRISTI: We've been separating
for birth control

the last like, week and a half,
so they are used to this,

but they're obviously
not used to darts flying

and the immobilization.

I don't think they know
what's going on yet,

but as soon as that first girl
gets dropped,

I think everyone's gonna know
really quick

what's about to happen. (laughs)

Frida is first,
which is exactly what we wanted

out of those three girls.

She's our more skittish female.

DR. LAUREN: I'm gonna be honest,

early on when I was planning
to be a veterinarian,

I did not consider that I would
need to be a marksman

to do this job.

It's gonna be a tricky shot,
so I'm just gonna take my time.

So, the risk is, if there's
another dog behind her,

I could accidentally hit them,

you know,
somewhere very dangerous.

I don't want to hit an eye,
or any other vital organ.

(squeaking)

DR. LAUREN: I'm just trying
to pick up on her pattern.

CHRISTI: But Frida
is really worked up.

She's very agitated
that she is by herself.

She's going very, very fast.

DR. LAUREN: I need those
other girls away from her.

CHRISTI: Frida was going way too
fast for Lauren's liking.

We were kind of going
into plan B, C and D.

CHRISTI: Um, all of a sudden she
stood still for half a second.

(pop)

CHRISTI: Nice.

Lauren took her shot,
and it was beautiful.

It seriously was awesome.

MIKE: First dart,
first shot, great hit,

and now we'll just
kind of sit back

and we'll look
for that initial effect.

DR. LAUREN: She's stumbly.
MIKE: Yeah.

CHRISTI: And she went down
from the dart being in her

in six minutes.

Very fast, but perfect.

MIKE: Then, once we're
comfortable with her being down,

we're actually going to test her
with a stick,

something that's just
kind of like, agitate her,

see if she gets up and moves.

And then, once we're comfortable
with the level of sedation,

we're gonna go ahead
and get started.

(squeaking and chirping)

DR. LAUREN: You got it?
MIKE: Yeah, keep your hands.

DR. LAUREN: Whoa, watch out,
watch out, watch out.

(squeaking)

DR. CYNTHIA:
Weight and vaccines are set.

We have an audience.

MIKE: Yeah, they're
pretty worked up about it.

CHRISTI: Literally,
they're sitting watching, too.

DR. LAUREN:
She's got a nice femoral pulse.

We're placing this implant into
the muscle as much as possible.

The expectation with the implant
is that it'll last about a year.

DR. CYNTHIA: Okay, there it is.

DR. LAUREN: Alright. Awesome.

African painted dogs are one
of the most endangered mammals

from Africa.

We want them to be able
to breed in the future,

but what we don't want is pups
that are sired by a brother.

CHRISTI:
Frida was really far under,

and then she was in the crate
and we were watching

and she literally jumped up...

faster than we all thought
she was going to.

She's awake.

Now we know for these next two

that they're not gonna like,
it's not a slow wake-up.

DR. LAUREN: Next up is Georgia.

She's going to be
a significant challenge.

She's the alpha female,

and she definitely can see
what's coming.

(children screaming)

(rollercoaster rumbling)

(ducks quacking)

JAIME: So as a team, we had
a pretty long night last night.

Our boat strike female
that had come in

started to have
some higher respirations.

We watched her overnight,

and unfortunately her health
kind of kept deteriorating.

I'm just so thankful that she
didn't pass away out there.

You know, she didn't drown,
in her condition,

I'm glad that she was surrounded
by people who loved her (laughs)

even though if it was
only for a few hours.

♪ ♪

MOLLY: It's really tough,
you know.

You know, we wanted her
to be comfortable,

so we stayed with her
on her last night

and were with her
to keep her comfortable.

It's such a shame, because she
had a full life ahead of her.

♪ ♪

JAIME: You know, we keep
getting manatees in.

And so now our attention
has to go on those cases,

to get them better

and to do whatever we can
to get them back out.

LISA: We'd really like to get
Burrkey on the bottle,

since he was orphaned.

We need to help him get
the nutrition he needs.

He's been a little bit
of a struggle.

He's been okay for us
to be able to grab

and he's taking the bottle
into his mouth.

He's just not actively
nursing yet,

so we're hoping that this
will be the time

that he'll drink some for us,

and so that we don't
have to tube feed him.

♪ ♪

MOLLY: That's awesome.

JAIME: Hear him slurping?

LISA: Awesome.

JAIME: Sucked it down.

MOLLY: It's cool. Yeah, yeah.

That's awesome.

This is exactly what it is,
in these moments,

why we do what we do.

I mean, I think he might be
finishing the bottle,

which is fantastic.

Yeah. (laughs)

It's really, this is,
it's awesome.

LISA: Less than an ounce left.

Super baby.

(laughing)

JAIME: I didn't want to hover,
but I heard him slurping.

MOLLY: Well, and then Opal
was there the whole time,

just hovering.

(laughs)

That was really cute.

JAIME: Good job.
MOLLY: That was awesome.

LISA: We're really lucky
to be here.

It's a dream job for all of us
to work in rehab

and get to work manatees,

so it's just a really
exciting day for us.

CHRISTI: Do you want me to try
to station her over here?

DR. LAUREN: Next up is Georgia.

You know, doing one painted dog
in this scenario is a challenge,

and then triple that.

(pop)
(yelp)

CHRISTI: Nice shot.

We hit her with the dart,
hit it square.

The dart was in
for more than a few seconds,

which is more than
what we got out of Frida.

DR. LAUREN: But the drug's
not taking as much effect

and as quickly as it should.

CHRISTI:
So Georgia is something.

MADISON: Georgia's kind of
stumbling a little bit.

MIKE: Georgia, you know, we kind
of expect the same exact thing.

They come from the same mother,
the same father,

and each one of them, yeah,
responds very, very differently.

DR. CYNTHIA: Yeah, she's down.

We're at 15 minutes
and Georgia just went down,

but she still has her head.

She's down sternal.

CHRISTI: We started to poke her.

We want to make sure she is
actually down, before we enter.

She jumped back up, ran around,
lay down in a different spot.

MIKE: That's why we poke 'em.

DR. CYNTHIA: I'm glad
I didn't walk in there.

CHRISTI: Poked her again,
poked her in the stomach,

poked her in the hips,
poked her in the ear.

Nothing, nothing, nothing.

MIKE: I think we're good.

DR. CYNTHIA:
Yeah, I think we're good.

CHRISTI: We went to open
the door and she jumped up.

MIKE: Heads up.
DR. CYNTHIA: She's awake.

DR. LAUREN: I have this.

MIKE: Wow.

DR. CYNTHIA:
More drugs, please, Lauren.

DR. LAUREN: Okay.

CHRISTI: I am so sorry.

Uh, trickster!

DR. LAUREN: So, once the drugs
are on board,

the clock is ticking.

Because we do reach
a certain point

that we could potentially
lose an opportunity

to do this exam today.

MIKE: It just kind of
goes to show

just how hardy these
animals are, you know.

They're true fighters, and
they're not gonna give up, so.

♪ ♪

DR. LAUREN: Sometimes when these
animals are a little wound up,

they can actually override
our sedatives,

and so you just never
take it for granted

that just 'cause they're down
and they're sleepy-looking

doesn't mean that they don't
have the ability to react.

(growling)

MIKE: We're going to go in here.
Let's get her secured.

DR. CYNTHIA: Mike's going in
with the baffle.

I'm gonna poke.

You guys be ready
just with the door.

AMANDA: At that moment,
once you enter that environment,

there's no going back.

You have to fully commit.

MIKE: That makes me nervous.

MIKE: That makes me nervous.

I'm gonna get this board
down on her shoulder here.

CHRISTI: She's still
really wiggly.

DR. LAUREN: Okay, I'm gonna
put the gauze on.

MIKE: Heads up.

AMANDA: It was intense,
walking up to her,

wondering if she was
fully sedated or not.

That was terrifying.

CHRISTI: We got her out and she
got the exact same work-up,

contraceptive, all that stuff.

DR. CYNTHIA: Just be aware
we're taking her off.

CHRISTI: And then Monet.

(pop)

BRANDI: There's a lot
of moving pieces to this.

We do have Georgia
currently in recovery,

while Monet will be getting her
vaccines and health assessment.

And then Frida is waiting for us
to be done with her sisters.

Everything really depends on
getting the timing just right.

DR. CYNTHIA:
Oh, don't hit the fence.

MIKE: Once all three girls
are up and stable,

we're gonna shift Monet
over in with Georgia.

Close the door up, you kind of
let all the boys in.

MADISON: Let's go, let's go. Hi.

BRANDI: Hi, Freddy.

MIKE: And then we'll go

and we'll attach
the crate for Frida...

and give her access to the girls

and let everybody
hang out again, so.

(squeaking)

CHRISTI: That was a marathon.

Thank God we only
have three girls.

BRANDI: Okay, that's adorable.

Take a nice bath together.

KRISTIN: That's really cute.

(honking)

DR. NICO: We're heading
to the penguin house

to check on Pepper,

that a couple of weeks ago
she was feeling sore.

But it's at night,
when things get, you know,

a little bit crazy
at the penguin house

and she has to stay by herself.

We put her on some medications

to help her with inflammation
and achiness.

RYANNE: Come on, Pepper.

Come on, guys, let her out.

Thank you.

DR. NICO: Yeah, she's
moving pretty good.

RYANNE: Yeah.

DR. NICO: So, this
is only at night

that we're keeping her
separated?

RYANNE: Yes.

(kissing)

But you can see that Bolt
and Emily are together.

DR. NICO: Oh, so this is
the previous boyfriend, huh?

RYANNE: Yes.

Yeah, Bolt has already gone
with Emily,

so he's not holding any torches.

DR. NICO: He's not
waiting for her?

RYANNE: No.
DR. NICO: Poor Pepper, man.

RYANNE: I know.

The drama is, we just,
yeah. (laughs)

DR. NICO: That's funny.
RYANNE: I just sigh.

DR. NICO: I'm sorry, Pepper.

We are gonna try
to give her a mate,

but I don't want her
to hurt herself,

so maybe not
such a young male penguin.

Pepper, you know, you have
all the right, you know,

to have a boyfriend,
and we're gonna try.

So, it's going to take
some time, you know,

for us to arrange to other zoos,

to see if we can find
a boyfriend

that it might not be
as aggressive.

But, unfortunately, until then,

she's going to have to
sleep alone.

MOLLY: We've had some
really cold days this last week

and it's finally starting
to warm back up

to Florida temperatures.

Really nice for the manatees,
and for us as well.

Burrkey, bottle time.

JAIME: Hello.

DR. LAUREN: Hey, how's it going?

MOLLY: Doing good.

DR. LAUREN: Burrkey's gained
about 80 pounds

since he's been with us,

and it might be time
for him to graduate.

MOLLY: He's a butterball.

DR. LAUREN: It's incredible.

MOLLY: Babies are really tough,
but he's doing so great

that it makes me really happy
and really proud.

DR. LAUREN: Alright,
we're trying to check in

on Volt and Opal.

I see them munching over here.

MOLLY: They don't even look
like the same manatees, no.

JAIME: Burrkey, Opal and Volt
are going to be leaving

kind of like a 17,000-gallon
medical pool

to about
a 125,000-gallon large pool,

so it's going to be
a whole new world for them.

We have six other manatees

that are living
in the large pool right now,

and they're gonna see
fish and turtles.

They all were
at one point in time

back in our critical care pool.

MOLLY: Alright,
shall we let 'em out?

DR. LAUREN: Yeah, let's do it.

You know,
it's always really nice,

when you get to make that step
forward towards the front pool.

It's not over yet, but I think

we've gotten out of the woods,
as far as...

MOLLY: He's scared.
DR. LAUREN: Yeah.

MOLLY: Kind of scary to go
out to the big pool.

You know, we've had this gate
shut for a while,

and they don't know what it
means when we open it.

They're going.
Volt's going first.

DR. LAURA: Coming through.

MOLLY:
Alright, Burrkey, big day.

DR. LAUREN: Coming through.

MOLLY: You know, it's nice,

'cause they have each other,
too, so they can go together.

JAIME: Hi!

You're so cute.

MOLLY: They're going.

DR. LAUREN: This is amazing.

I didn't know that these animals
were gonna live.

JAIME: Next one.
MOLLY: Alright.

DR. LAUREN: Here we go.

MOLLY: Volt's first.

Alright, Volt.

He's brave.

JAIME: Go, Burrkey! (laughs)

MOLLY: There goes Burrkey!

You got it, boy.

They look so tiny.

And they're already
eating out here.

Those are really good signs.

JAIME: I should go
get more food.

DR. LAUREN: (laughs) Yes.
They're like, "More, Jamie."

JAIME: Oh, Volt's like,
"Yes, give me more."

MOLLY: I'm really excited
for Burrkey, Volt and Opal.

Manatees can live
up to 60 years,

so they have a really long life
ahead of them.

Out in the wild that's,
that's best-case scenario.
