KAELA: Yeah, it is.

KP: I just want

You're a lot heavier
than you look.

KATELYNN: He is definitely
one of my favorite animals.

We have such a good bond that he
just wants to hang out with me.

I'm just gonna look this way.

I love you, I can't stop
looking at you.

(laughs)

JASON: Hey, Aanjay.

So this is Aanjay,
our Komodo dragon.

Komodo dragons are from
the Komodo Islands in Indonesia.

And they are an apex predator.

Pretty dragon.

Aanjay is an awesome dragon,
and I have spent a long time

building a relationship
with her.

She definitely has the ability

to identify each of us
as keepers.

It looks like...

Oh, I think we've got eggs.

That's awesome.

She is just hitting
her reproductive age.

She's nine years old now.

These are her very first eggs.

So this is very exciting.

Over the past few days we've
definitely started to see

a little bit of behavior change.

Normally she can devour
an entire rabbit,

but she got full
after only half a rabbit.

So something else
was filling her up.

Come on, Aanjay.

(whistles)

DAN: What's up?

JASON: We got some Komodo eggs.

DAN: Okay, good.
Well, let's check them out.

I want to see how many she had.

JASON: A normal clutch size
for a Komodo dragon

can be up to 30 eggs.

Her being a young female
and this is her first time,

10 to 15 eggs
might be normal here.

She totally buried it.

DAN: Oh, did she, really?

JASON: Yeah.
So she was using this,

so we can dig through here.

She might have some more.

I'm not seeing
a good spot for them.

Alright, so we've got
our first four.

DAN: Yeah, and I was
hoping for a lot more.

JASON: It is a little concerning

that we're not seeing more
right off the bat.

We need to make sure
that she doesn't have

a whole bunch of eggs
that aren't being passed.

DR. NICO: Good morning, guys.
DAN: Hey, good morning.

DR. NICO: Good morning.
JASON: Hey, good morning.

DR. NICO: So, I guess
good news, huh?

JASON: Yeah.

DR. NICO: How old is she now?
JASON: She's nine.

DR. NICO: Nine. Okay.

For me, reptiles have
a special spot on my heart.

Now, when you're talking
about a Komodo dragon,

it's just like the grand prize.

Intelligent, smart, fast,
ferocious in a good way.

Amazing.

That's what we were
trying, correct?

You know, having her
lay eggs at least?

JASON: She laid a few
this morning.

She might have
a couple more in there.

DR. NICO: She might.

DAN: So what, what's scary is
these guys should,

when they drop their eggs,
they should just do it.

DR. NICO: All at once.

DAN: And it's done all at once.

It's a little concerning
because there's a possibility

they're stuck
in the birth canal.

So this is kind of a big deal.

Many years ago,
we had a female dragon

that went egg-bound on us.

We tried some medication,

we tried a few other
things with her

but ended up going septic
and passing away.

DR. NICO:
My next step is an x-ray.

DAN: So I want to keep
a tight eye on her.

BOY: Can we call them back?

♪ ♪

BRANDI: Have you seen
Zach's feet in a while?

DR. LAUREN: I looked
at them the other day.

BRANDI: His back hooves
are looking a little rough.

DR. LAUREN: Yeah.

BRANDI: So here at the zoo
we have two okapi.

Zach is our male,
who is 14 years old,

and then the love of his life,
Betty, is 19 years old.

MADISON: So what we'll probably
do is we'll reposition him

so he's facing forward,
and then we will step up.

DR. LAUREN: Okay.

I love okapis.

They are such an amazing,
unique animal.

When I first saw one, I actually
had to do a double take

and think to myself
is that a real animal?

It seems like something you
create out of your imagination.

BRANDI: So you can see
our line that we have

on what we call the claw.

DR. LAUREN: I see it, yeah.

And then on his
other front one, too.

BRANDI: Other front one, yeah.

DR. LAUREN: Zach has
a malformation

on his right front hoof

that causes it to grow
excessively long,

and so to compensate for this,
the rest of his hooves

tend to grow very quickly
and very irregular.

Hi, sweet man.

MADISON: Hi.

Are you ready?

Zach is definitely one
of my favorite animals.

Every day that Brandi and I
are here together,

we work to trim
all four of his hooves.

Also, we work on just
building our relationship

by giving him scratches, feeding
him different types of browse.

DR. LAUREN: You got
the goodies, Madison?

MADISON: Yeah.

DR. LAUREN: Hi, good boy.

MADISON: Sweet potatoes
are the way to Zach's heart.

Good job, buddy.

DR. LAUREN: He says I love
my neck scratched, oh, yeah.

BRANDI: His toe that's missing
the one digit,

we actually call it his claw.

And we like that to be
a little bit more overgrown

because it helps act
like a shoe.

I'm gonna try to get his foot
on the block first,

and then when we do that,

if you just want to focus
on scratching him up here

and up and down the leg.

That's what he really likes.

MADISON: Are you ready for this?

Hoof.

(whistle tweets)

Good boy. Good job.

You're being very good.

Good boy. Good job.

BRANDI: Good job, Zachary.

Alright. I'm going in.

MADISON: Okay.

DR. LAUREN:
We love Zach so much.

He's an amazing animal,

and he's very special to us
here at the zoo.

He's my fave.

(laughs)

MIKE: Yeah, Lauren
gets the hard job.

You have to pet the okapi.

DR. LAUREN: It's really hard.

His coat looks beautiful.

BRANDI: Yeah.

DR. LAUREN: Zach,
he's such a stud.

He's so velvety and gorgeous.

And he's also a gentleman.

How often can you go
and just go pet your okapi?

He's like, more goodies?
More goodies?

MADISON: Yeah, right.

DR. LAUREN: It's important,

especially for Zach's overall
quality of life and his comfort,

that we stay on top
of his hoof trims.

BRANDI: Target.

Good job.

DR. LAUREN: The team
has done a great job,

actually voluntarily getting
his hooves trimmed back,

but he needs more than that now.

It's amazing how much forward
it's grown, too.

In order to get Zach's hooves
back to where they should be,

we're gonna need to do
a more intensive procedure.

MADISON: Good job, bud.

DEVON: Mirror, mirror,
on the wall,

who's the prettiest lemur
of them all?

JANE: That would
definitely be Riley.

DEVON: Yep.

Riley is our male
ring-tailed lemur.

Ring-tailed lemurs
are from Madagascar,

right off the coast of Africa.

And they're very social
with each other

and they love
to interact with us.

So it really makes
everybody's day.

I don't think we
showed him his before.

JANE: No, he has
nothing to compare.

He thinks he's always
been this handsome.

(Devon laughs)

DEVON: When we first got him,

he started to develop
some allergies.

He had a lot of hair loss
on his face,

and he developed some
really bad-looking wrinkles.

DR. LAUREN: Oh, yeah.

And you can definitely
see it under his eyes.

He's really scraped himself raw.

DEVON: It turned out that
he is allergic to banana.

So we cut that from his diet
and we gave him some medication,

and since then he is
looking better than ever.

You want a raisin?

Dr. Lauren's coming by
to check on Riley today.

It's been a few months,

so I'm really excited for her
to see how he's doing.

Hi.

DR. LAUREN: Alright.

DEVON: So believe it or not,
this is Riley.

DR. LAUREN: That's Riley?
He looks amazing.

DEVON: I know.

DR. LAUREN:
Oh, he looks fantastic.

You can completely see
all of the fur growth.

DEVON: His ears look great.

Like, thank God.

I was really worried about him,

so I'm glad that
he's comfortable now.

We don't see any itching.

We just see grooming
between the three of them, so.

DR. LAUREN:
When he first came to us,

he was completely scabby,
he was itchy.

He looked miserable.

And he is just
a plush, beautiful

ring-tailed lemur right now.

JANE: What do you think, girls?
You think he's handsome?

DR. LAUREN: Riley's really
taken to these girls.

DEVON: He really has.

Ring-tailed lemurs can live
in pretty big groups,

and so Riley has
two new girlfriends.

Their names are
Pinch and Scootch,

and they get along really well.

Now they cuddle on a big pile,
and it's awesome.

So we're really happy for him.

I really have fallen
in love with Riley

since he has come to us.

And we're really excited
that he has some companions.

JANE: You're gonna win People's
sexiest lemur alive this year.

(laughs)

JASON: She's aware.

She knows something's going on.

We could probably just
start setting up

and she'll probably walk over
and check us out.

This morning Aanjay
laid a few eggs.

A normal laying female

will usually deposit
all of her eggs together.

So seeing just a few eggs
is very abnormal behavior.

RYAN: Hi, guys.

JASON: Hi.
KATHERINE: Hi.

RYAN: We're ready to do this?

JASON: X-rays should hopefully
show us if she's retaining eggs.

So we'll be doing x-rays
in the dragon's lair.

Alright,
and then we'll close this.

KATHERINE: Alright, we good?

JASON: We're good.
So come on in.

If you guys want to start
setting up everything you need,

I'll just stand and just kind of
keep an eye on her for a minute.

TYSON: If they get
too close or someplace

where it looks like you're gonna
back yourself into a corner,

obviously that's not safe, so.

DR. LAUREN: Yeah.

Jason, is she doing okay
with all of us in here?

KATHERINE: She definitely
knows that something's up.

She's just like, mmm,
gonna keep one eye on ya.

JASON: Here, let's do it.

Komodo dragons are fierce.

She could potentially,
if she wanted to,

rip a chunk out of my arm
without even trying.

So, we definitely need to use

an extra level of caution
with them.

Some people might think we're a
little crazy for going in here,

but to us this is just
another day in the office.

RYAN: Be careful.

JASON: Good morning.

Um...

RYAN: Ooh.

JASON: Here, let's do it.

RYAN: Be careful.

JASON: Our Komodo dragon Aanjay
needs x-rays to make sure

that she doesn't have
any more eggs still inside her.

Um...

RYAN: Oooh.

JASON: Shh, you're okay.

TYSON: There we go.

JASON: Alright, so you got
your machine ready?

RYAN: Yep, Stacey's
ready to roll.

DR. LAUREN: Working with Komodos
can be really dangerous.

But it's really important
that we get this x-ray

to help us see how many eggs
still remain.

KATHERINE: She's wanting
to crawl away.

DR. LAUREN: She's like,
no, thank you.

JASON: Aanjay hasn't done
a lot of these x-rays before,

so this is very new to her.

As well as there's a lot
of new people in the habitat.

So many people.

So she is very interested
in everything that's going on.

And it's a little more
challenging to keep her still.

Alright, if you guys are good,
she's really calm right now.

This is where all the work we've
done building a relationship

comes into play.

So the fact that she will let us
come in to take these x-rays,

this makes this a lower-stress
situation for her.

STACEY: Perfect.

JASON: There you go.

DR. LAUREN: Alright,
that looks good, Stacey.

STACEY: Okay.

DR. LAUREN: We're gonna
take these x-rays

back to the hospital
so we can really get a good look

at the images and see
how many eggs are there.

JASON: Well, she did
a darn good job.

And back to her spot for a nap.

(laughs)
RYAN: Oh, yeah, right to there.

STACEY: Well, that made my day,
got to x-ray a dragon.

RYAN: Heck yeah.

X-rayer of dragons.

(laughs)

DEVON: Topi?

Come here.

I got some seeds.

Hi, girlfriend.

Do you wanna practice hand?

MIKE: Alright, let's take a peek
at him here really quick.

Oh, and he's with Betty. Lovely.

BRANDI: I do love party pants.

MIKE: What are party pants?

MADISON: His zebra party pants.

MIKE: Zebra party pants,
alright.

Oh, man, okapi are
an incredible species.

We have guests,
friends and family,

every time they see an okapi,

they're like, okay, who put
the giraffe in with the zebra?

And that's not how it happened.

They have the striped legs

that help them kind of blend in
in the background.

And then the dark color will
help them hide in the shadow

from the canopy.

So the big goal is gonna be
to go in and kind of correct

some of the conformation
in his hooves.

We're currently working with the
vet team to get a plan together

for Zach's procedure so we can
go in and correct his hooves.

The one kind of cool thing is
that, you know, his injury

hasn't like impeded his ability
to be an okapi, right?

MADISON: Right.

MIKE: He still gets up
and runs around the habitat.

He still gets to...

MADISON: Yeah. He's still
breeding well, so that's good.

MIKE: He's breeding well, yeah.
There you go, there's a win.

We got reports from the team

that they're seeing
that courting behavior,

that breeding behavior
between Zach and Betty.

Well, we need to get
Lauren and a team down there

to check in on her.

DR. CYNTHIA:
I hope we see a baby.

DR. LAUREN: I do, too.

So this morning we're gonna
head over to the okapi barn

and we're gonna assess Betty.

We're going to ultrasound and
see if we can find a fetus.

DR. CYNTHIA: Good morning.
DR. LAUREN: Good morning.

DR. CYNTHIA: Exciting morning.
BRANDI: I know, right.

DR. LAUREN:
How is she this morning?

CYDNEY: She's pretty chill.

She's just like, yeah,
hanging out. Mm-hmm.

BRANDI: We wanna make
the ultrasound procedure

as routine as possible.

Betty Boo,
you hungry this morning?

Hi, good morning.

Betty's key ingredient to really
cooperate is lots of scratches.

She loves that
more than anything

in the whole wide world.

She pretty much just stands
for anything that we wanna do.

DR. LAUREN: Hi, Miss Betty Boop.

What you doing, mama?

BRANDI: Look at all your friends
this morning.

All here for you.

MIKE: What do we say,
is she pregnant?

DR. LAUREN: Yes, I'm just laying
hands on her right now.

(laughs)
MIKE: You can just tell, yeah.

Zach and Betty have had
successful offspring before

and now we're hoping
for another one.

DR. LAUREN: Alright,
are you ready?

BRANDI: Yeah.

MIKE: Being able to put
another okapi on the ground

would be so impactful
for everybody,

okapis, like, worldwide.

And the other thing that's
really cool about it,

is that having a baby okapi
is a part of being an okapi.

So, it's just another experience
that Zach and Betty get to have.

It's all a part of
being the animals

they were intended to be.

DR. LAUREN: Brandi,
how's she doing up there?

BRANDI: She's doing great.

DR. LAUREN: Alright.

Right now I'm not really
seeing a whole lot

to confirm a pregnancy.

But we might be a bit early.

BRANDI: Okay.

DR. LAUREN: If there's a calf
in there, as it gets larger,

I think we'll pick up
on it better.

The results of the ultrasound
today, we didn't confirm a calf,

but based on the breeding date
we're still a bit early.

MIKE: My gut is telling me that
she's more than likely pregnant.

BRANDI: I think so, too.

It is slightly disappointing.

But it doesn't exactly mean
that she is not pregnant.

We'll just have to wait and see
what the next ultrasound shows.

MIKE: Good job, Betty.

BRANDI: Zach's injury, really,
nothing's gonna stop him.

CYDNEY: Oh, yeah.
(laughter)

MIKE: Hasn't slowed him
down at all.

RYANNE: Here at the zoo

we have quite a lot
of babies everywhere.

They're always just so adorable.

So anytime the penguins
have a lot of chicks,

we can definitely make
everybody jealous.

One of the best parts of my job

are the potential for
new additions to our colony.

One of the big things that
we do here at Zoo Tampa

is to help the penguin species
as a whole.

TORI: Loki and Tinkerbell
are like our power couple.

So they're like the Beyoncé
and Jay-Z of the penguin world.

TESSA: Let me know when you have
her and I'll get her eggs.

TORI: Hey, Tinkerbell.
TESSA: You good?

RYANNE: Tinkerbell and Loki
currently have two eggs.

They can either be fertilized
or not fertilized.

TORI: There you go.

TESSA: Beautiful.

TORI: She's such a good mom.

RYANNE: Alright.

The lights.

We candle the eggs after a while
and see if they're developing.

We hold it up to a light

so we can actually see inside
of the eggs, see the yolk,

and then see the development
of the veins.

And as it progresses, it should
be getting darker and darker

as the chick grows.

TESSA: You can see how much
that liquid is moving in there.

It never really formed.

Not viable-looking on that one.

Looks like it was probably
never fertile to begin with.

TORI: Yeah.

Egg two.

Cross your fingers.

RYANNE: Anytime we see
non-development in the egg,

it's definitely disappointing.

We hope that we have two.

If we only have one, then that's
still good enough for us.

TORI: That is so dark.

TESSA: That's pretty dark,
and that, you see that air cell

kind of moving down
a little bit?

TORI: Yes.

TESSA: Oh, we can see
some movement.

RYANNE: Ah.

TESSA: Yeah, you see that
movement right there?

RYANNE: That's awesome.

TORI: A child. (laughs)
A child inside.

RYANNE: A baby.

TORI: We are really excited

to meet Tinkerbell and Loki's
new chick.

TESSA: They're looking
pretty good, guys.

We just have a couple of weeks
until it's due to hatch.

RYANNE: So now it's just
a wait and see.

RYANNE: See, look.

TORI: So perfect.

KP: Good morning.

MARIE: How are you?

KP: Every day
you work with a koala

is a super exciting day.

They are super cute.

I think they are super sweet,

they kind of make you
fall in love with them

based on, not just
their cuteness,

but their personality, too.

MARIE: What you doing?

Being cute as always?

CHRIS: It's been an incredible
experience for our team

to be able to care
for a koala joey.

It's a first ever for Zoo Tampa

so we're really
learning as we go along.

KP: Whatcha thinking?

MARIE: He's so big.

KP: When Sydney the koala
was born,

he was less than
the size of a jellybean,

and now just 13 months later

he's already almost
half the size of mom.

She just, like, wants to lay
with a cocktail

and get away from him.

CHRIS: I think it's time
for him to go.

MARIE: Yeah.

CHRIS: (laughs) That's...

KP: I always tell Ceduna,
now you get on his back.

CHRIS: Right.

KP: In the wild,
this age right now,

it's very natural for them
to start separating from mom

and doing their own thing.

MARIE: Ceduna's face right now.

KP: Mom is ready
for him to hit the road.

MARIE: She's like, I give up.

CHRIS: It'll be
about time for him

to pair up with another female.

So hopefully down the road

Sydney will be
a successful breeder

and will have some joeys
of his own.

KP: It's happening.

CHRIS: Yep, he's gonna be
heading out to San Diego.

The team's been working really
hard on doing crate training.

MARIE: Come on.

CHRIS: It would be really easy
just to go up and pick Sydney up

and you know, place him
inside the crate.

But anytime you can get
an animal

to voluntarily participate,
it's much, much more comfortable

and less stressful
on that animal.

KP: We did it
on the ground originally,

but this way it's more natural.

The whole training process has
been quite the lengthy process.

Now it's time for it
to really pay off.

We need him to go
in that crate voluntarily,

so we can get him on an airplane

and send him all the way
to California.

And this is like play-offs,
so, we're ready for it.

MARIE: Good job, buddy.

I think you should explore it.

Oh. Oh!

Oh, no.

MARIE: Good job, buddy.

I think you should explore it.

KP: (gasps) Oh, no.

CHRIS: We'd love
to keep Sydney here.

He's been fantastic.

The staff really loves him.

But he's maturing,
he's old enough

to where mom needs to separate
and he can go off on his own.

Ultimately we know
what's best for him

is to move on to the next zoo.

KP: Oooh.

MARIE: Oooh. Leafy.

CHRIS: There he goes.

KP: We did it.

Good job.

We knew this day was gonna come.

We were already
preparing for it,

but he's part of the family,
so it's bittersweet.

We're all the way in.

He might find a nice
California girl over there

and make little koala joeys
of his own.

He's like, "Mom, let me tell you
about what just happened."

(laughs)

DR. NICO: So how many eggs did
the Komodo have had so far?

RYAN: You wanna see
the radiograph?

DR. NICO: Yeah.

We took this x-ray on
the Komodo a couple days ago.

RYAN: I think this was
our best view.

DR. NICO: Wow.

RYAN: Lots.

DR. NICO: One, two,
three, four, five.

And now there's 10, 11.

I'm hoping not to have
to intervene at all.

RYAN: Yep.

DR. NICO: As worried as I am

that she has not laid
all of them,

I'm also super excited,
because this is good news

that she has, you know,
laid eggs.

Have they said if they want
to incubate them?

RYAN: Yeah, yeah,
we talked a little bit

about parthenogenesis.

JASON: Komodo dragons
can do something

called parthenogenesis.

So essentially, the female
can self-fertilize.

She does not need a male around
and those eggs will still hatch.

DR. NICO: Clinic to Herps.

JASON: Herps, go ahead.

DR. NICO: When would be
a good time for me

to catch up with you guys
and Komodo?

JASON: Nico, we're ready
for you right now.

DR. NICO: There is this slight
chance that through pathogenesis

we see some virgin creation.

These eggs might be fertile,

and that we might be able to get
some babies out of Aanjay.

I've never seen a Komodo egg.

I'm excited, you know,
to see it, maybe touch it.

We'll see what they let me do.

But, oh, yeah, I want to
at least, you know,

put that on my list of things
that I've seen,

or at least witnessed,
is a Komodo egg.

I'm just distracted
with all these. (laughs)

JASON: I know, there's all sorts
of stuff going on.

JASON: So we've got the three
that we collected this morning.

DR. NICO: They don't look bad.

JASON: I mean,
this is her first clutch,

so you don't always expect them
to look perfect.

DR. NICO: I just need
to touch a Komodo egg.

JASON: Yeah, exactly.

DR. NICO: Alright, I did it.

It's just like,
in my wildest dreams,

I thought that I was gonna
be able to do that.

So this is really exciting.

I like the color of this one,
although, they are...

JASON: The texture
of this one feels better.

Look at the difference
in the shell right there.

DR. NICO: Yeah.

Jason, thanks for
the opportunity, man.

Keep an eye on that female.
You know, we need her.

I know you guys, you know,
are on top of her.

JASON: As great as it would be
to get an offspring

out of these eggs,
more importantly for us

is that Aanjay doesn't
become egg-bound.

TORI: Good morning, guys.

Good morning.

So we're right inside
the hatching window

for Loki and Tinkerbell.

Oh, my goodness,
I think I hear something.

Hi.

Loki and Tinkerbell are in their
nest together this morning.

They're really good parents.

Males and females actually do
take turns incubating the eggs

and even raising the chicks
once they're hatched.

Do you have a baby in there?

Oh, yeah.

Can definitely see
a pip in the egg,

you can actually even see
the beak of the chick.

When the chicks are starting
to hatch, they pip internally,

they make a little hole inside,

and then they actually have
to crack through that shell,

which is really,
really hard to do.

Oh, his little beak.

(gasps) Yay.

JOSH: Hey, Tori. Any progress?

TORI: (laughs) Yeah.

JOSH: When an egg hatches, it's
always super exciting for us.

Oh, yeah, I see it.

That little beak
is going to town.

The more penguins in the world,

especially of an endangered
species, the better.

TORI: Now that this chick
has externally pipped,

we're just gonna
give it more time.

It's done the hardest part, so
it's probably pretty exhausted.

It might kind of
have to rest a little bit

before it really starts
breaking out into that egg

a little bit more.

JOSH: So, yeah,
we'll give it 24 hours.

TORI: As long as that chick
is strong enough

to get out on his own,

then he'll be set up
for success, for sure.

JOSH: Alrighty.
TORI: Alright, guys.

JOSH: Thanks. We'll check up
with you guys later.

And hopefully we'll have
a little gray, fluffy nugget.

MADISON: Good morning.

DR. LAUREN: Good morning.
Yeah, all hands on deck.

Zach's got a history
of an injury

with one of his right hooves,

and his back hooves have
become severely overgrown.

So today we're gonna put
Zach under full anesthesia

so we can really trim
his hooves back

and make him more comfortable.

So with this protocol,

we're gonna get about 20 to 40
minutes of working time.

MIKE: Once we get into it, yeah,

we can tell you if we need to,
if we're gonna need more time.

We should be able
to know right away.

DR. LAUREN: Perfect.

Well, I'll start
drawing up meds here.

Here they are.

MIKE: Anytime we

you give the injection,

You have to wait for them
to get deep enough

so that you can
safely go in there

and do the work
that you need to do.

CHRIS: Let him rest,

MIKE: Don't fight him.

DR. LAUREN: There is also
a finite amount of time,

so once it starts to wear off,
we gotta wrap it up.

MIKE: Brandi, go get your saw.

BRANDI: Yeah.

MIKE: Right now,
looking at the hooves,

we can see, I mean, there's
a lot of work to be done.

DR. LAUREN: I think you just
take off about right here.

Yeah.

MIKE: You know, working within
the short window here,

we wanna try to get
as much done as possible.

Trimming Zach's hooves
isn't gonna hurt him.

It's a lot like trimming back

your own fingernails
or toenails, only much bigger.

CHRIS: Creating
a little smoke there.

BRANDI: Yeah.

Chris and I are actually
using a hacksaw.

Since we were really
going to town on it,

the blade was
getting really hot.

It's hot.

CHRIS: Yeah,
don't touch that blade.

MADISON: Good job, guys.

BRANDI:
It was a pretty big chunk,

so it was really nice to be able
to finally get that off.

CHRIS: You doing alright, Mike?

MIKE: The front hooves
look the worst,

but his back hooves are the most
important to get trimmed,

and they're gonna take
the most time.

CHRISTI: We have
a lot of ear movement.

BRANDI:
How much time we got, Lauren?

DR. LAUREN: I think you guys
have about five minutes left.

What else do you need to do?

BRANDI: About five minutes?

MIKE: That's right there,
it's gotta come off.

We still got a lot to get to.

(sighs) Wow, that hoof is hard.

CHRISTI:
We have a lot of ear movement.

BRANDI:
How much time we got, Lauren?

DR. LAUREN: I think you guys
have about five minutes.

MIKE: Today we fully sedated
our male okapi, Zach,

so we can work on his hooves.

Zach's hooves are
really, really dense.

They're really tough.

It's kinda like filing concrete.

(sighs) Wow, that hoof is hard.

You only get
a 40-minute timeframe

and we still got
a lot to get to.

BRANDI: If you wanna
flatten this.

DR. LAUREN: Go for it,
go for it, yeah.

MIKE: Okay, let's roll him.

Just try to cut
the flare off at least.

CHRIS: Yeah.

MIKE: This is like an intense
manicure, definitely.

Manicure times a thousand.

DR. LAUREN:
Little tongue movement.

MIKE: He's starting
to twitch a lot more.

DR. LAUREN: Yeah, let me know
when you feel like

you're in a good spot.

MIKE: Okay.

DR. LAUREN: We were able
to accomplish a lot today.

We were able to make some really
good progress on Zach's hooves.

Alright,
reversal's going in, guys.

Start clearing out your stuff.

He's picking up
a little bit there.

MIKE: Watch, watch it, guys,

CHRIS: Yep, yep, yep,
let him stand.

DR. LAUREN: Alright,
we can just back away.

He's pretty good right now.

He's walking around
and he looks good.

I know that he's gonna be really
happy to be reunited with Betty,

and once he's fully recovered,

we will put him back
with his love.

JOSH: So we're at
the 48-hour mark.

We'll kinda see
where things are at.

TORI: Yesterday,
Loki and Tinkerbell's eggs

externally pipped.

Let's take a look.

Hi, Tink.

JOSH: Hi, Tinkerbell.

Where's your egg at?

TORI: So every time
we've been checking

and actually getting
glimpses of that egg,

we haven't really seen
a lot of changes.

JOSH: Have you been able
to hear it, though, still?

TORI: Yes.
Every once in a while.

JOSH: Okay.

TORI: It's a really
important process

for this chick to go through.

It's a really hard process
on their body.

But it kinda gets them
ready for the real world.

TIFFANY: Any more progress?

TORI: Hard to tell. (laughs)

JOSH: Not that we've
been able to see.

TIFFANY: Alright, well,
it is getting late.

So I think we should
probably get eyes on it

and make sure that
we're comfortable

leaving for the night.

TORI: Right.

JOSH: Usually the expected time
for a chick to hatch

out of an egg is 24 to 48 hours.

After 48 hours
there's a potential

that they've exhausted
all of their energy reserves.

That could be a problem.

TORI: Okay, go for it.

TIFFANY: She like tucked it
way back there.

TORI: She did.
(laughs)

JOSH: So he's still
vocal and moving.

TIFFANY: Oh, yeah.

JOSH: The chick does seem to be
maybe a little bit exhausted.

It's not as vocal as it was
during our last egg check.

He hasn't worked its way
around too, too much.

TIFFANY: I just, I don't think
that if we left right now,

we would come back
to a whole lot of progress.

JOSH: No. He definitely
needs to come out.

There's the potential
a chick can pass away

from overexhaustion
inside the egg.

So we're gonna assist it.

As far as like
an intervention goes,

we've only had to do it once.

Most of the time, the penguins,
they do the job on their own.

If you just wanna get,
maybe just a couple of these

with some of
the distilled water.

TORI: Yes.

TIFFANY: AC Tiffany
to clinic Lauren.

DR. LAUREN: Switching.

TIFFANY: Hey, Lauren,
just letting you know

the penguin chick hasn't made
a whole lot of progress,

so Josh is assisting
a little bit.

JOSH: I'm pretending
that I'm your egg tooth.

TIFFANY: I didn't know
if you wanted to come down

and take a look.

DR. LAUREN: Okay, 10-4,
I can head that way.

TIFFANY: 10-4, see you soon.

TORI: So we were really hoping
for a normal hatch,

but this has kind of turned into
a life or death or situation.

We have this little chick's
life in our hands.

JOSH: This is nerve-racking
and scary.

TORI: Mm-hmm.

DR. LAUREN: Hey.

TIFFANY: Hi.

DR. LAUREN: How's it going?

JOSH: It's going. So...

DR. LAUREN: He's still
pretty active?

JOSH: He's still
vocal and active.

Maybe not as much
as this morning.

So right now, I'm just
chipping a little bit,

by little bit away
at the eggshell.

DR. LAUREN:
This is very tedious,

and this, you've got
to be very delicate.

The piece that we have
to be careful about

is there's a membrane
that can be vascular,

and you don't want
to pull that too soon,

'cause that could be
detrimental to the chick.

JOSH: We wanted to
maybe do halfway around,

or if you think maybe
I should do all the way around.

But I was hoping to leave
the egg cap intact

so that hopefully
he would just push it off.

DR. LAUREN: We want the chick
to have the strength

and prove that
it can handle this,

but at the same time we don't
want it to struggle too hard,

because the chick
will get exhausted.

TIFFANY: We just weren't
comfortable with...

JOSH: Leaving him overnight.
TIFFANY: Yeah.

DR. LAUREN: I agree.

I mean, especially if he gets
hung up somewhere,

he'll struggle all night.

JOSH: I've chipped
all the way around

where the chick would eventually
push off and come out from.

So we're hoping that that is
all the work that we need to do

and the chick can break open
the rest of it on its own.

DR. LAUREN:
Alright, little buddy.

Are you going to
give it more time?

JOSH: Yeah. I think so.
TIFFANY: Okay.

JOSH: So we're going to put
the egg back now.

We're hoping that
being with mom,

the chicken will wanna
come out and meet her.

TIFFANY: Take a little rest
and then get out of your egg.

TORI: We're gonna check on
the chick during the night,

'cause when we have
a penguin chick

that we're kind of
worried about,

every moment really matters.

TORI: Tinkerbell and Loki's
chick had a hard time hatching.

Are you guys ready?

It was a long night, we were
definitely really worried,

but it wasn't until midnight
that we really were able

to kind of sleep easy,

because we felt really good
about where the chick was at.

It looks like
Tinkerbell and Loki

are still in the nest
this morning.

So you can even see eggshell.

RACHEL: Yeah.
TORI: Look it, in the back.

RACHEL: Loki, will you
let us look?

This is my first baby penguin,
can I see him?

He's like, "No, you can't
see anything."

(peep)

TORI: Well, we can hear baby
right now.

RACHEL: We can hear the baby!

TORI: Oh, I think
she moved a little bit

and you can actually see.

(peeping)

RACHEL: There he is!
He's so cute.

TORI: Oh, my gosh.
RACHEL: Look at him.

TORI: Oh, that's perfect.

RACHEL: Look at him!

TORI: Yes, yes, yes, yes!
Ah! Look at that.

That's the cutest thing
I've ever seen.

It's just a huge weight lifted
off of me and the entire team.

We were really, really worried,

and this is really awesome that
everything is going good now.

It's so cute.

a close eye on this chick,

because we're not
out of the woods yet.

But everyone's spirits
are way higher today.

So, there's a good chance now
that she's laid all of her eggs,

but we're going to need
to do one more x-ray

just to make sure she's clear.

Go ahead and scratch
her head a little bit.

She just wants to
come check you out.

RYAN: Perfect.

So, all the eggs that we saw
initially, I cannot see that.

I'm just happy to say that
I don't see any more eggs

inside of Aanjay,
so that's a really good sign.

Hopefully the male
will breed her,

hopefully, you know, we know
more or less her timing,

and next time, you know,

she's just gonna lay them
all at once.

JASON: Okay.

Unfortunately, the eggs that
we put in the incubator

don't seem to be good.

Next year, once we get
to breeding season,

we're hoping to pair Aanjay up
with our male Titus,

and we'll be able to have
those baby Komodo dragons

that we wanna hang out with.

DR. LAUREN: Zach.
MIKE: Hi, buddy!

DR. LAUREN: Hi, good boy.

So how is he doing this morning

since his big day yesterday,
his workup?

BRANDI: He's doing good.

Wanna come say hi?

MIKE: Zach just had
his procedure yesterday.

He's done incredibly well.

BRANDI: You're just showing off
your new shoes?

MIKE: We were able to trim back
a lot of that overgrowth

and now we'll just have to
maintain it from here on out.

Our plan still was just to give
him a couple days of stall rest

until we put him outside.

DR. LAUREN: I think
that's perfect. Yeah.

BRANDI: I'm really glad
that Zach recovered well,

and he's doing really good.

So now we're really just
hoping to check on Betty

and get some extra good news
from the okapi barn.

(laughing)

DR. LAUREN: She's like,
oh, you got some goodies?

BRANDI: Hi.

So today we're gonna do
an ultrasound with Betty.

Our last ultrasound
was inconclusive,

so, fingers crossed, hopefully
today we will see something.

CYDNEY: Good girl!

MIKE: I wanna see a baby.

DR. LAUREN: Let's see a baby.
CYDNEY: That would be ideal.

DR. LAUREN:
We're a couple months in,

if she is indeed pregnant,

so my expectation is that
I should see a nice placenta

and I should actually start
to see development

of a fetus in there.

Alright if I touch you here?

BRANDI: Do you have
a baby in there?

DR. LAUREN: She's like,
"She's gotta find it!"

'Cause she's not telling me.

The hard part I'm having
is I'm not seeing,

I'm not getting
the images I need.

She's standing like
with her right leg forward

so it's not quite
opening up as much.

We gotta try something else,
let's see.

BRANDI: Yeah, I mean, we can
try move if you'd like to.

DR. LAUREN: Honestly I'm always
a little disappointed

if I can't find it, because
I really wanna confirm it

and tell the good news
to the team.

We all want her to be pregnant.

CYDNEY: Good job!

We would really like to know
if you're pregnant.

DR. LAUREN: I just want to get
in a really good location.

Right now, I'm seeing just guts.

Right now, we're doing
the ultrasound on Betty.

DR. LAUREN: Yeah, I think
the depth is good, actually,

let's back out just a touch.

(gasps) There's a heart!

RYAN: Oh, there's a heart!

CYDNEY: Oh, oh, my gosh!

DR. LAUREN: Boom, right there
on your ultrasound screen

is a little okapi heartbeat.

There's movement in there.

Did you see that?

MIKE: Is that, that's a baby?

DR. LAUREN: That's a baby.
BRANDI: Betty.

CYDNEY: You're a mama!

Betty is pregnant
and I'm super excited!

MIKE: Oh, is that the rib cage?

DR. LAUREN: Yeah, those are
part of the spine

coming in with the ribs.

The baby just moved.

Good girl, Betty!

MIKE: Oh, I'm
incredibly excited.

Anytime we have an animal here
that gets pregnant,

is able to contribute to
conservation and the population

is absolutely amazing.

DR. LAUREN: My, my guess
is it's a small,

size of a small little cat.

Little kitten.

CYDNEY: So cute.

DR. LAUREN: With the cutest
little hooves. (laughs)

MIKE: The gestation of an okapi
is gonna be about 15 months,

so she's got a long road
ahead of her.

We believe somewhere, you know,
eight to nine months still.

There's a lot of work for her to
do, a lot of work for the team.

But we anticipate next winter,
little baby okapi on the ground.

DR. LAUREN: Zach!
MIKE: Hey, buddy.

DR. LAUREN: Hi, good boy.

BRANDI: Hey, bud.

DR. LAUREN: Wondering
what we're up to, huh?

Are you prepared
for this news, Zach?

BRANDI: You're going
to be a dad, buddy!

DR. LAUREN: The world always
can use another okapi,

so this is fantastic.

TESSA: Morning!

CYDNEY: I can't wait to see
the little fluff ball.

TESSA: I know.

TORI: The chick hatched
yesterday,

and since then it's been resting
up with Tinkerbell and Loki.

DR. CYNTHIA: Very excited
to see him, see how he's doing.

TORI: Still kind of worried
about this chick.

Whenever there's a successful
hatch in human care

in like a zoo or an aquarium,
it's always a really big deal.

We don't treat
these things lightly,

it's really important
for these animals,

they're parents now, and that's
really important for them.

But it's so important

for the entire African penguin
population as well.

KATELYNN: Oh, I see chick,
back left.

TESSA: Okay, I see him.
TORI: You can go ahead.

TESSA: Hold on.
KATELYNN: Yeah.

TESSA: He's really like,
okay, I got chick.

TORI: Snug.

DR. CYNTHIA: So, little penguin
chick had a rough time

hatching out on its own.

Sometimes that can show us that
they're gonna have problems

or that they have
problems already,

and that's why they had trouble
getting out of the egg.

Alright, let's just take
a quick peek at you.

Oh!

You're so cute!

TESSA: Good, strong sounds, too.

DR. CYNTHIA: Goodness.

See your seal.

Oh, it looks great!

TESSA: That's excellent.
Absorbed really well.

DR. CYNTHIA: Yeah, I'm just
gonna put a little dab

of Betadine on there,
just for good measure,

if you wanna do that,
just a tiny little bit.

Boop. That's it. Yeah.

We really are hoping
that this little chick

is going to be above 60 grams.

60 grams and above

is when the chicks seem
to have a better outcome.

We were a little worried

since he had trouble getting
out of the egg on his own.

Sometimes those chicks
are underweight

and have developmental problems.

TESSA: Okay, 61 grams.

DR. CYNTHIA: Good!
60 is the cut-off

when they're supposed
to do well.

Good job, little one.

The penguin chick looks perfect.

TESSA: You wanna get in there,
Tori?

TORI: Yeah, maybe I'll just
like touch this baby

for just a second.

DR. CYNTHIA: Just hold him
for me, please.

TORI: Okay.
I know, you need assistance.

Nesting season is my favorite
time of year, yeah.

It's a really stressful
time of year,

but it has a big payoff in
the end if everything goes well,

so it's really exciting.

(peeping)
DR. CYNTHIA: I know! Good!

Well, definitely, that's good.
That thing's hungry.

TESSA: Great sound!
DR. CYNTHIA: Okay!

TORI: He's got feelings.
DR. CYNTHIA: He looks amazing.

TORI: I can't wait to watch
this chick grow up.

I know Tinkerbell and Loki
are gonna do an amazing job

and the colony is
gonna love this chick

just as much as we do.

to feed some dragons?

Even though we were worried,

Aanjay definitely knew
what she was doing.

She just wanted to have us
bite our nails for a few days.

Now that she's clear,
no more eggs,

she gets to eat a whole rabbit.

DAN: How's everybody
doing today?

MAN: Pretty solid.

DAN: Today we're gonna be
feeding our female Komodo dragon

out here on display, and as you
can see, she's getting a rabbit.

The rabbit still has
the gooey center,

so if you're squeamish,
you might not want to watch.

Hey, go ahead
and let Aanjay out.

Here she comes.

CHILD: Whoa!

DAN: She's gonna be
pretty hungry.

The reason we hang that
rabbit up there like that is

it's no free meal here.

She has to work
to get that meal,

we want her to get her exercise,

pulling and yanking
and using her muscles.

WOMAN: There you go.

In the belly.

JASON: She is ravenous.

She got all that space
cleared out,

now she wants to fill it
back up with a rabbit.

We are so happy that
she is back to normal

and that she is jumping
right into this feast.

CROWD: Ooooh.

JASON: That's the best part,
right?

See how she's rocking her head
back and forth like that?

She's got hooked,
serrated teeth,

so she's using them
like a knife.

So, she's actually rocking it
to slice through.

And you can see she's not shy

about eating the fur
and all that.

She'll eat the whole rabbit.

DAN: She had me worried
last week.

She's healthy,
she's back to eating,

she's looking like
a dragon should look.

Feeling pretty good now about
this whole thing, yeah.

She seems to be back to herself.
