Tonight, London hosts the first
ever Earthshot Prize,

created by His Royal
Highness Prince William.

These are the finalists
hoping for one of five

�1 million prizes in
the most prestigious

environmental awards ever.

And we're joined by some
of the biggest musicians

on the planet -

Ed Sheeran,

Yemi Alade,

and Shawn Mendes.

But first, with a message
recorded especially for

the Earthshot Prize,
we're leaving our planet and

heading to the International

When I look out the window at our
Blue Planet I am overwhelmed by the

sheer beauty of it was not
mesmerised by the ocean and my very

first Aurora sighting was truly
magical. Boom when we are Earth

gazing we cannot help but be struck
by the fragility of our precious

atmosphere. It makes you feel very
protective towards it as it is the

only thing keeping us safe, keeping
our planet habitable. We must

remember that it towers a
responsibility to protect our own

spaceship Earth it is our
responsibility to protect our own

spaceship Earth.

with an ingenious innovation
that makes our world greener

and cleaner, could win
�1 million for their project.

Yes, tonight's
finalists are tackling

some of the biggest
challenges facing our planet,

and have all come up
with game-changing solutions,

and over the next hour,
we'll meet the winners.

Yes, though in an award
ceremony first,

we're delighted to say no-one
has flown halfway round the world

just to be here.

What's more, no plastic has been
used to build the stage,

and even this murmuration -
yes, I said murmuration -

of brass discs is recyclable.

As for this, it's been
in the family for years.

Tonight we'll be giving
out five awards,

we'll be hearing
from some very special

free range organic guests,

and there's more music
from Ed Sheeran,

Shawn Mendes, Yemi Alade, and KSI.

But first, tonight's winners
have all been chosen by

the Earthshot Prize Council,
a member of which is the creator

of Earthshot, Prince William.

We're delighted he's with us this
evening, and earlier,

he settled into a cosy pod
on the London Eye to tell us

what inspired these awards.

It's been two decades since the
London Eye opened on the eve of the

millennium. The future was in our
hands. London greeted the new

millennium. Oh, Wow, indeed. Liquid
water has been found on Mars. This

meant so much for South Africa.

That's not all that has happened.
Scientists have now undeniably

confirmed that the planet is at a
tipping point. Flooding, forest

fires, landslides and air pollution
caused by mankind's actions, have

become all too frequent. We are
alive in the most consequential time

in human history. This is the
decisive decade. Time is running

out. The actions we choose or choose
not to take in the next ten years

will determine the fate of the
planet for the next thousand. A

decade doesn't seem long enough.
Humankind has an outstanding record

of being able to solve the
unsolvable.

President John F Kennedy understood
this. He challenged the world to do

the impossible, to put a man on the
moon within a decade, the moon shot.

There was no way this could happen
in just ten years, until they made

it. We choose to go to the moon not
because they are easy but because

they are hard. Today, the warning
signs around the world are clear. We

don't need a moonshot, we need
Earthshots. Each year for the next

ten years we will award five prizes,
one for each Earthshot, to those who

are bringing hope to our future and
can protect and restore nature,

revive our oceans, clean our air,
build a waste free world and fix our

climate. To do this the Earthshot
Prize has brought together a

remarkable team to find, support and
scale the best solution is to repair

our planet. Many of the answers are
already out there. We can be part of

a global effort but we need everyone
from all parts of society to raise

their ambition and unite in
repairing our planet. The future is

ours to determine and if we set our
mind to this nothing is impossible.

You heard it there,
nothing is impossible,

so tonight we are concentrating
on the positives and putting

those who do incredible work
in the spotlight.

Absolutely.

And someone who's done
that his whole career is

another member of
the Earthshot Prize Council.

A man who has dedicated
his life to the

natural world and has seen
first-hand and shown us

the terrible damage done
to our environment.

Please welcome Sir
David Attenborough.

It is appropriate that
the Earthshot Prize should be

publicly launched here,
in this particular building,

for this is where public television
started, back in 1936.

Since then, of course,
electronic pictures have

enabled people all
over the world to see

our planet with an immediacy
and clarity that has no precedent.

The most important story that
television has ever told is now only

too familiar.

The natural world on which we

entirely depend is declining
at a rate faster than at

any time since the global
catastrophe that

exterminated the dinosaurs.

We know where this story is heading
and we known know we must give it

a different ending.

And there is every reason
to believe that

we can indeed do that.

Recent scientific breakthroughs,
new technologies, medical advances

and perhaps above all our ability
to communicate across the world

in an instant has helped us
to break down barriers,

reach mutual understandings,

and cooperate internationally
as never before.

Now we need to bring those advances
and the brains behind them,

to bear on the five great
challenges outlined

by Prince William
that must be met if we are to

repair our planet and,
by doing so, protect ourselves.

That is what the Earthshot Prize
was created to achieve.

The 15 finalists tonight include
a truly extraordinary

15-year-old visionary in India,
a forward-thinking city,

teams working at the cutting
edge of technology,

and an entire country that
are already doing great work.

And we will celebrate
them all,

as well as
announce the five winners.

They all build optimism
by finding innovative

and brilliant solutions
to the world's challenges,

and they all give us hope which,
we are told, springs eternal.

But we don't have eternity.

We need to do this now.

And over the next 10 years,
if we all put our minds to it,

I believe we can.

and we thought about
asking them to row here,

though that was
a little impractical.

But wherever they are,
I'm sure they are waiting nervously

to find out if they are
the winner of one of

these sustainably-produced beauties.

Yes, and to present the first
Earthshot,

another member of the royal family.

At least, he is to one half
of Liverpool,

and the whole of Egypt.

It's footballing legend Mo Salah.

This is Revive Our Oceans.

Good evening.

I'm delighted to be
here at this amazing

and incredibly important event.

I am passionate about this
because I grew up near water,

the Mediterranean, and it is vital
to life in the region,

just like all of our
planet's seas and oceans.

By the end of this century,
there could be more plastic

than fish in the oceans,
unless we do something now.

It's scary, but the finalists
have found ingenious solutions

to revive our oceans.

They are Pristine Seas in America,

who are fighting to
protect 30% of the world's oceans

by 2030.

Coral Vita in the Bahamas,

who are working
to save the world's reefs.

And Living Sea Walls
in Australia,

who are bringing
life back to our coasts.

But there can only be one winner.

The winner and recipient
of �1 million

to scale their solution is...

..Coral Vita!

Let's find out more about how
they are growing coral

to save and replenish our reefs.

I don't know if best friends is the
way to describe it, we are also

business partners, that almost
supersedes being best friends. I

would almost describe it as
brothers. We started thinking and

dreaming about how we could make an
impact on the issues we care so

deeply about, central to which was
coral reef degradation. Coral reefs

are one of the most magical
ecosystems on earth, and also one of

the most important. They sustain a
quarter of all marine life, and the

livelihoods of up to 1 billion
people. Unfortunately these

ecosystems are collapsing all around
the world. We are losing the

biodiversity that depends on them,
but we are also facing a threat to

humanity and life on earth as we
know it. So when we founded Coral

Vita to plant resilient corals in
the reefs and keep them around for

future generations. We are able to
grow corals up to 50 times faster

than they normally take in nature.
In each high-tech tank, we can grow

up to 1000 baby corals, and we can
train us corals to be more resilient

against conditions like warming and
acidifying oceans. We also use our

fans as education centres, to build
the next generation of stewards of

the reefs as well as hiring locally
as much as possible. We as a people

are especially connected to the
ocean. In my lifetime, I have seen a

decline in reef health. I remember
when reefs were tall and sparkling

and just filled with creatures. And
now I cannot even find those spots

anymore. They were completely
different. And then something that

Hurricane Dorian comes along.

Hurricane Dorian comes along. --
something like. This entire farm was

under 17 feet of water. Some of our
coral tanks literally washed ashore

35 miles to the east. As difficult
as it was, it also reaffirmed how

important our workers. A healthy
coral reef can reduce wave energy by

97%. They are the best natural
breakwaters. With our model, where

we can draw more resilient corals at
scale, that is a reason for hope. --

grow more resilient corals. We know
what we have to do and we have the

tools to do it. It is time to stand
up for what needs to be done to save

the beauty of life on our planet.

And we can now speak to the guys.

What does winning this mean for
you and the planet?

And I know you are a huge Liverpool
fan, Gator, so I know the fact that

Mo Salah is giving you this award
will mean a lot to you. Thank you to

our loved ones, families and
friends, thank you to Prince William

and the Earthshot community, thank
you to all the coral practitioners

around the world fighting to protect
reefs and the people who have

welcomed us here. This is an idea
that Gator and I had in grad school,

and we will now be able to restore
the economy.

Our job shouldn't exist, and we hope
to be put out of business.

The best thing for coral reefs
is to stop killing them.

As we work to deliver
ecosystem-scale restoration,

failure is not an option
for our political, industrial,

and media leaders solving
for climate change

and habitat destruction.

The cost of inaction far exceeds
funding solutions today.

And those solutions exist.

All we need is for those with power
and resources to act for good.

Revive reefs by planting coral
with us one day soon.

Earthshot,

and here to present it, a woman
whose work has taken her

from the big screen
to the United Nations.

It's actor and activist Emma Watson.

This is Fix Our Climate.

Applause

I've spent much of my working
life acting in fictional

make-believe worlds where
the impossible can be made possible,

and insurmountable challenges
can be overcome.

But we now need to do
the same thing here

in the real world
with climate change.

The last five years have been
the hottest on record globally,

and as we've seen
with the recent forest fires

around the world, that can have
devastating consequences.

Our three finalists
have developed innovative ways

to reduce climate change,

and they are,

AEM Electrolyser, who create
carbon-neutral fuel by converting

electricity into
carbon-free hydrogen gas.

Reddi Capsules in Nigeria,
who are making energy affordable

through solar-powered capsules.

And Sol Bazaar in
Bangladesh,

a solar energy
exchange network which allows

people to group together
to sell their excess energy.

They are all outstanding,

but let's find out which
project has won the award.

The Earthshot for Fix
Our Climate goes to...

..AEM Electrolyser!

Congratulations to AEM Electrolyser
and their project

that uses green hydrogen,
a cleaner, carbon-free alternative

to fossil fuels to power our world.

Take a look at this
wonderful initiative.

When we travel, we are using ships
or trains or planes and also cars,

and all of these existing
technologies are emitting CO2 as

they are burning fossil fuels. 80%
of our energy consumption is still

relying on fossil fuels. We are a
global energy technology company

that produces a electrolysers. They
use green electricity to put water

into hydrogen and oxygen, and green
hydrogen as an alternative fuel that

can decarbonise all of our sectors.
The idea for our electrolyser came

out of a will to live self
sufficiently. In 2015, I finished my

studies, and I moved to Northern
Thailand, and I read about this

house that we used solar energy and
hydrogen, to not rely on fossil

fuels. So of course I was extremely
curious to know who are the people

behind this idea? Because surely
they have a vision. And this is how

I met my co-founders. The idea to
live self sufficiently drove them to

look for solutions for long-term
energy storage. I believe that our

AEM Electrolysers will play a
significant role in our future

energy by driving down the cost of
green hydrogen and making it more

affordable for everyone. Green
hydrogen is the holy Grail because

it emits no CO2. It could also be
used for transportation, for

example. Hydrogen planes are being
trialled today in the UK, but it is

also providing an alternative fuel
for cars, and also trucks and ships

and trains. Hydrogen has a huge
potential in decarbonising our

transportation at large, and we want
to make it affordable for everyone.

The time has come to save our
planet. The AEM Electrolyser is a

solution to fix our climate, and it
is a solution worth scaling. I dream

that I will be looking up and seeing
a hydrogen plane fly and knowing

that our adapter team was a part of
enabling this fossil fuel free

future.

at winning this award. Tell me, how

will this money enable you to
continue this incredible work? Thank

you to our phenomenal team, you made
this happen, we did it. Thank you

Winning this prize is recognition
that we are going in the right

direction. It will support us to go
in to mass production and it will

boost us towards our goal of
accelerating the access of green

hydrogen for everyone, and it will
significantly cut fossil fuel use by

2030. There has never been a greater
opportunity for positive change and

as our inspiring finalists ready
capsule and Sol Bazaar and many

other people have shown, they are
also working on positive, impactful

solutions, but together we can
repair our earth. Thank you.

We now come to tonight's
third Earthshot,

and here to make the presentation,
an award-winning Hollywood actor.

Star of The Butler, Selma,
and A United Kingdom,

to name just three of his films,

it's David Oyelowo.

This is Clean Our Air.

I once had the great honour
of playing Dr Martin Luther King,

and, as we all know, he had a dream,

a dream of a better world
for everyone to live in.

Tonight, we have a similar dream,
but for different reasons,

and it's a dream we have to realise,

otherwise it really will become
the worst of all nightmares.

The figures are staggering.

91% of the world's population
live in places with dangerous levels

of air pollution, and it's estimated
that air pollution kills

seven million people every year.

Our three finalists have
set their marvellous minds

to solving this problem,

and have come up with some
ingenious solutions.

They are,

In India, Takachar have
invented a machine

that takes leftover crops
and converts them into fuel

and fertilisers,
without creating smoke.

Our youngest finalist,

Vinisha Umashankar,

the brains behind an ironing cart
in India that's run by solar power

instead of charcoal.

And the Blue Map app in China
which lets users check local

air and water quality, helping them
hold polluters to account.

So let's find out who has triumphed.

The Earthshot for Clean Our
Air is awarded to...

Takachar!

Congratulations to Takachar.

Here's the story of how they have
found an ingenious solution

to the air pollution caused by
the burning of agricultural waste.

I remember growing up in New Delhi.
Every winter farmers would set their

field on fire in order to clear them
of agricultural waste after harvest.

The loose straw and Kane would burn.
The smoke would just sit in the air

and the smell would get stuck in
your nose. I remember my grandfather

getting so sick from the air
pollution he would find it hard to

breathe. I don't think anyone knew
how bad things were until they came

to a head in 2016. The Indian
government declared Delhi's air

pollution an emergency situation,
shutting down schools and requesting

families to stay at home. They found
that Delhi schoolchildren had

reduced lung capacity and would
never be able to recover. That's

horrific to hear. It's easy to blame
farmers, but at present they have no

other choice. It's really about
working with rural communities to

provide them a greener way of
working. We have a low cost

smokeless machine that can be used
by rural communities to process and

convert agricultural waste into
usable products like fuels and

fertilisers. The waste goes in at
one end and these products come out

at the other. Farmers can then earn
extra income by selling these

products to markets locally as well
as worldwide. Our technology

eliminates 98% of smoke in the open
burning of fields. We are at the

start of our story. My hope for the
future is it becomes a normal site

on every rural farm, helping to
fight air pollution globally. Air

pollution is an international
problem affecting millions and

millions of people worldwide. My
grandfather would be proud of me and

the work we are doing. I won't rest
until we can help everyone

everywhere breathe cleaner air.

the passion and commitment shown by

pollution by creating new
opportunities for rural communities.

In some parts of the world air
pollution reduces the life

expectancy of the population by up
to nine years. We need to stop

ignoring this problem and act now. I
am deeply inspired by all the other

finalists and hundreds of other
innovators who are working

tirelessly so that all of us can
breathe clean air. I'm optimistic we

can get this done. Thank you.

God knows I've said some
rubbish in my time,

which thankfully will
never be recycled.

But this award goes to the heart
of how our communities work.

Quite simply, we make waste,
but it doesn't have to go to waste.

To present the award,
a national, international,

inter-planetary national treasure.

If I listed all her
accolades, we'd be here

well into next week,
so I'll just say

it's Dame Emma Thompson and this
is Build A Waste Free World.

Hello, earth lovers.

The origin of the word "thrive",

which of course means the thing
we all want to do, thrive,

is "thrift", from the old
English word "thriven".

We thrive and prosper
by using what is to hand,

what may even have been
overlooked, tossed out,

or even thrown on the fire
to keep us warm.

Waste does not make us happy.

Throwing out food makes most
of us uncomfortable.

Humans were not designed
to waste their resources.

More of us are going to have to go
back to making do and mending,

and it will make us happy, truly,
and calm the troubled waters

of a collective consciousness
that knows full well that the state

of things at the moment is wildly
unbalanced and out of kilter

with everything that keeps us
healthy as a species.

But there is hope, and there
are reasons to be positive,

because our finalists are facing
this challenge head on.

They are,

in Italy, the city of Milan
food waste hubs take leftover food

from supermarkets and canteens
and distribute it to the hungry.

Sanergy in Kenya, who use insects
to convert human waste

into safe products for farmers.

And from Japan, Wota Box,
a tiny water treatment plant

that turns 98% of waste
water into clean water.

One of them will be getting
�1 million

to further their wonderful work.

Let's find out who that is.

The Earthshot for Build A Waste
Free World goes to...

..the city of Milan!

Congratulations to the city of Milan,

they intend to halve
food waste by 2030

through their redistribution
of food to people in need.

Let's take a look at
their incredible work.

I'm a researcher at the University.
Food waste is one of the key

challenges affecting the world.
Throwing food away doesn't just

affect the people who need it, but
when food weights rocksin landfill

it emits harmful greenhouse gases.

One third of food is wasted, that's

a big environmental issue. With over
half of the world's population

living in urban areas it's falling
on cities to come up with game

changing solutions to build a waste
free world. Milan has been at the

forefront of this movement. One of
the most innovative actions is a

system of local food apps. It's
where surplus food is collected and

then redistributed to no profit
organisations. When I was in

economic difficulties I received it
through the local app, I can do the

same thing for other people. It
makes me feel great because I know

how it feels to be in difficulties.
On a healing basis the system of

local food apps records and
distributes around 70 tonnes of

food, reaching more than 3000
families in the city. Milan's

success shows that if everyone
involved works together for social

and environmental benefits can be
extraordinary. We are 250 and

everyone is a volunteer. If you go
around the city actually you can see

people that cannot afford to go to
market so we collect from the

sellers, we ask if they have
something that's ugly and then

everything is spread around the
people. We have quite big

associations like churches, the Red
Cross and even active citizens that

decided to help. We are trying to
have an impact on two problems, the

environment and the community around
you at once.

I feel very satisfied when I see
this food not wasted. The city has

engaged its population around the
subject of food waste. We are

creating a sense of community and
kindness hundreds of thousands of

food have been saved from going to
landfill, we can share our knowledge

around the world.

Protect And Restore Nature,

and to present it,

we asked Prince William
to pull a few strings.

Thankfully, he came up trumps,

though I doubt this
is what she had in mind

when he mentioned date night.

The Duchess of Cambridge.

Nature is vital to us all.

A thriving natural world
regulates our climate,

nurtures our physical and mental
health, and helps feed our families.

But for too long, we've
neglected our wild spaces.

And now we are facing
a number of tipping points.

If we don't act now,

we will permanently
destabilise our planet.

And we will rob our children
of the future they deserve.

Our Earthshot Prize finalists show
us, however, that we can, by 2030,

see the natural world growing,
not shrinking,

for the first time in centuries.

The Pole Pole Foundation,
in the Democratic Republic of Congo

shows us how communities can take
a stand to protect wildlife

whilst feeding their people.

The Republic of Costa Rica has
provided an example to the world

that deforestation can be turned
around whilst growing your economy.

And Restor from Switzerland is using
technology to unite people

all over the planet to protect
the environment.

I'm delighted to announce
that the first ever Earthshot Prize

to Protect and Restore
Nature is awarded to...

..the Republic of Costa Rica.

Congratulations to the
Republic of Costa Rica.

Let's find out how their programme
of paying citizens to protect

the environment has led
to forests doubling in size.

In Costa Rica, our economic model
supported people cutting down

forests.

We are honoured to be joined
by the President of Costa Rica,

Carlos Alvarado Quesada.

Mr President, how can the people
of Costa Rica inspire the world?

Thank you very much for this award
on behalf of all 5 million Costa

Ricans and many generations. We
acknowledge that nature conservation

is a shared value. In our society,
and it should be in the world. We

receive this recognition with pride
but humility. What we have achieved

in this small country in Central
America can be done anywhere. The

majesty of our forests is the seed
of our developing model. We will

continue recognising nature as our
most valuable asset, advancing

towards a carbon neutral in a nature
positive world. Indeed, we are

working on the next step, our pura
vida ocean conservation model. This

award is for the whole country,
based on the leading by example, and

fully thousands of people who have
dedicated their lives to preserve

and restore our protected areas and
forests. For that, and to you all,

and to Prince William, our eternal
gratitude. And also thanks to

Coldplay, they are going to be
starting their world tour here in

Costa Rica, because the alignment
and our sustainability policies.

Thank you all.

is a ten-year initiative,
and we will be back

next year with more
astonishing solutions

to repair our planet
in this decisive decade.

And we can now reveal
where Earthshot is heading to.

It s going to

What a night this has been.

facing our planet
in this decisive decade.

And I hope that our Earthshot
winners have shown you that there

is no place for despair.

You should feel inspired to act
and to demand that the solutions

you've seen tonight get
all the support they need.

I want to say something to all
the young people watching tonight.

For too long, we haven't
done enough to protect

the planet for your future.

But Earthshot is for you.

In the next ten years
we are going to act.

We are going to find the solutions
to repair our planet.

Please keep learning,
keep demanding change,

and don't give up hope.

We will rise to these challenges.

Now, I hope you agree that London
and the UK has put on quite a show

for our first year.

So for the second year,
we need to pass the baton

to a country whose leadership
is essential for all

five of our Earthshots.

Where better than the nation that
inspired the Moonshot

all those years ago?

I'm delighted to announce that
Earthshot 2022 will be hosted

by the United States of America.

I'm pleased to introduce
Secretary John Kerry,

the US Special Presidential Envoy
for Climate Change.

Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for
the opportunity to join the first

annual Earthshot Prize ceremony, and
to offer well deserved

congratulations to the inaugural
winners. This is the decisive decade

of action to put the world on a path
that will keep within reach of the

average global temperature rise to
1.5 Celsius. There is reason to be

filled with hope, and even with
optimism about our future. The

finalists and winners that we have
recognised this evening remind us

that we do have an incredible
ability to turn the improbable into

reality, if we work together. As
part of our commitment to repair the

planet, I am very proud to invite
the Earthshot Prize to the United

States in 2022, and to join you all
in celebrating and supporting next

year's breakthrough solutions from
around the world. Congratulations
