who appear near the villages

comes in with the harvest.

The witches would offer the
villagers a dangerous gamble:

partake in a competition at
the onset of the equinox,

and, should you triumph,

you will be rewarded with riches

and become a champion among men.

But, should you fail,
as all but one would,

your life would be
culled with the harvest,

and your soul forever held by
the witch queens of Samhain,

cursed to an inescapable
eternal darkness.

So I'm taking the Xenomorph
from my favorite horror film,

Alien, and I'm making
it all out of EVA foam.

I also am using motocross armor.

A lot of weird mixture of
materials to create something

that looks really
original and unique.

I used a lot of airbrushing
to get the color all correct

and now I'm just adding a
little bit of stones to it

because I want it to shine

a little bit in the
light, you know?

Nothing crazy, though.

So my inspiration
for my horror icon

is Billy the Puppet from Saw.

I am creating this vintage nurse

that has a whole bunch of
syringes sticking out of her.

It's going to be filthy,

but it's also going to
have a glamour to it.

I'm not worried
about the competitors

calling me out at all, no.

I think it's something
that's not common

within the drag scene,
so I'm really excited

to show everybody the
amount of work I do

put into my looks
and my performances.

I'm mostly just worried
about myself right now.

So my horror icons look is
inspired by Morticia Addams.

I've always wanted to
take classic horror icons

and give them a
very urban twist,

but also a modern twist as well.

Basically a black
representation of what

the Addams Family would be
if we had our own TV show.

I decided to do the
queen of horror, Elvira,

and I'm going to make her
a little bit more horrific.

Of course my hair is
going to be gigantic,

but I really am going
to elevate this look

with her makeup and her face.

I really want her to
look like a demon,

like Elvira in her true form.

For horror, because I'm
inspired by the Pale Man

by Guillermo Del Toro in
El Laberinto Del Fauno.

So this is some gloves.

I started with liquid latex

and then airbrush
a layer of blood.

Now I'm adding the eyes with
some liquid latex and paper.

The eyes are going to
be looking to the left

and then to the right,
just like Merrie's eyes.

Actually I think I speak
for my entire generation

when I say that one of
our first horror icons

that we encountered
in the cinemas,

like definitely Other
Mother from Coraline.

After her transformation, she
was this insect-like being

that was just trying to sew
buttons into everyone's eyes.

I'm kind of amplifying
the insect-like features

in all of her things, so
I'm gluing these, like,

insect legs that
I made out of foam

and I used a
fuck-ton of buttons.

I'm the only animated horror
icon here, it seems like,

so I think I'm
going to stand out.

I think I create drag in a way
that no one has seen before,

so I'm pretty excited
to show my stuff.

about being a lady

doing drag these days?

I mean, it's a lot easier now

than it was when I first
started out five years ago.

You know, that's bullshit, girl.

Cis women have been doing
drag as long as I have.

My first drag mother
was a cis woman.

I feel like there's a
little bit of a difference

in being a trans woman
in a drag competition

and being a cis woman
in a drag competition,

but we do share some
similar obstacles.

A lot of people think
that we don't belong here

and I'm not sure why.

We've always been here.

I'm so glad to
have a sister here.

I've been obsessed
with this show

since the moment it's came out

and I just kinda feel like
this is where I belong.

I am kind of a partier.

Here I can kind of be myself.

You guys have been so awesome

and everyone's
been accepting me,

which was kind of a
little bit of a worry.

I didn't know how I
would be perceived,

but, I'm like really excited.

I think that people are
going to see a side of me

that they've never seen
and I think that I'm just

going to find my place here.

And you don't have to stay
in one place the whole time.

This week we've
challenged our competitors

to completely reinvent
looks inspired

by some of our favorite
classic horror icons

and model their new
creations on the runway.

Here to help us judge our
first show of the season

is celebrated author, educator

and horror film
historian Tananarive Due.

Yes, I deserve to be safe,

but I should have
been on the top

because of my campy approach.

I think Merrie should
have been on the bottom

because her Marshmallow Man

was exactly like
the Marshmallow Man.

I'm excited to be safe.

It's a little bit bittersweet,

but I'm striving to hopefully

get that acknowledgement
from the Boulets next time.

Let's talk about Astrud.

Oh my gosh.

From the opening silhouette,
I was all over it.

Love the look, the
walk, the character.

I always scared and
at the same time,

I wanted you to spit acid on me.

(Astrud laughs)

Thank you. I want
to spit acid on you.

And I mean that with so
much love. (Chuckles)

Well, Alien is my favorite movie

so as soon as I
saw your silhouette

and that huge, lethal
tail, I was totally gagged.

What can I say?

H.R. Giger would
be super proud of.

I knew exactly
what you were doing.

It was the Xenomorph
of my weirdest, wildest

and like wettest dreams.

It was very sexual.

Your energy was wild

and I love seeing
that in a performance.

The way you did your makeup
and hair was very punk,

which I thought was a really
fresh take on the concept.

Job well done.

So let's move on to Koco.

The first thing I
noticed, Koco, is the hair.

So majestic.

I thought that look
was like the iconic

movie monster villain
we never got to see.

You really did interpret
this as your own.

Never send a rose unless
dyed black as a warning

and Koco, you are that warning.

It was so sexually
charged and dark.

You kinda had me captivated.

I thought it was brilliant.

I was sold the minute
I saw your silhouette.

I didn't associate the blood
necessarily with Morticia,

but it was a minor detail,
and I think you did fantastic.

Let's talk about Sigourney.

(Swanthula laughs)

Your girls are out in front
and they're at salute.

-Just trying to say hi.
-(laughing)

You are a performer.

You know you're on
stage, you're a showman.

It was kind of glorious and
your reveal was flawless

and the interpretation was
like electric and metallic

and those little bolt titty
tassels are everything for me,

so it was just
really, really fun.

Also it was giving me
like Madonna Gaultier

but who needs a cone bra

when you've got
tassels with bolts?

I really liked the way that
you played with silhouettes.

The coat was so
sharp and angular

and you were posing in a way

that you were very
aware of your shapes,

which I really appreciate.

Yeah, I was not at
first wild about the coat

and I was a little worried,

but it actually just amped
me up more for the revelation

when the coat came off,
because it was like, wow,

everything's popping,
and you really did take

this interpretation of Bride

and make it completely your own.

Let's talk about Hoso.

So I recognized you as the
Other Mother immediately.

For many children and
for many young people,

the Other Mother will be
like the gateway character

into the world of horror.

So all the iconic things that
make up the Other Mother,

you just scrambled it up and
made it really imaginative

and unexpected and it was
exciting to watch you perform.

I wasn't even as familiar
with the source material,

I was reading more sort of
Tim Burton-esque, you know,

but I was really, really
super impressed by the look

and also the movement which felt

so authentic to this character.

And I thought it was a
really interesting choice.

I liked that you thought
outside of the box.

I am aware of your drag,

but I'm not aware of
your performance skills,

so I was curious of what
you would do here tonight

on the stage and
you impressed me.

You sold it with a
lot of character,

a lot of movement,
so job well done.

Oh yeah, I'm batshit
insane. (Laughs)

You are fashion, you're
couture, you're terrifying.

Like you're everything
that Dragula stands for.

I was here for it.

You all performed very well,

but there can only
be one winner,

and the winner of the horror
icons makeover challenge is...

I was excited about this.

I'm so passionate
about this competition,

and to get that affirmation

from the Boulet Brothers
is just everything.

That leaves the La Zavaleta,

Bitter Betty, and Formelda Hyde.

The judges ranked
your monster makeovers

as the lowest scoring tonight.

Let's talk about why.

Zavaleta, I think your prop
fucked you over tonight.

The problem was when
you got out the blood

and started pumping
and we waited...

And waited...

And waited...

Keep going, Zavaleta.

Yeah, I completely understand.

You always, always, always
want to test out your props

and gags before
you get on stage.

The pump, I think, got
destroyed on the way here.

Not an excuse, but shit happens.

If the pump isn't broken,

it should be after
this performance.

(Swanthula laughs)

I just wanted to see also

a little bit more your
personality come out

beyond what you're wearing.

I will definitely
have a lot of that.

Yes, Zavaleta, you have
an incredible personality.

This character kind of
swallowed your character up.

I mean, I could see you
in a horror movie tomorrow.

It looks real, it's
terrifying, it's gruesome.

My issue, though, was
that, is she the Mummy?

Were you bathed in acid?

I wasn't sure what your icon,

what your creature was exactly.

Let's talk about Bitter Betty.

Betty, I do not think you should

necessarily be here tonight.

I think that your
detail with your outfit

comes through in spades.

Your drag is flawless.

The problem was the judges felt

that it was too similar
to your inspiration.

That was your downfall.

I mean, honestly,
there's a lot of details.

I personally want
those fuckin' earrings.

The icon came across fully,

but you didn't take it
and make it something new.

The problem for me is we
can see a variation of this

at any gay bar in the
world on Halloween,

So it just needed a
bit more imagination.

Okay.

Yeah. Great hair, great boobs.

Just want to see
more Bitter Betty.

Let's talk about Formelda Hyde.

For me, I totally didn't
completely get the reference.

I thought the hypodermic
needles on your fingers

were a reference to Elm Street
3, which I'm here for it.

-Bring it.
-Me, too.

-Yeah.
-Honestly.

On a positive side,
you're terrifying.

Yeah, I have to admit, I
did not get the reference.

I should have.

I've seen probably
every Saw movie,

so I taught you a more
like sort of an evil nurse,

sort of the abstract
face of addiction,

which I thought was super
creative and very, very scary.

I think the performance could
have been improved a bit

in terms of the movement and
really giving yourself over

to the character, but
you look fantastic.

Yeah, the mask is effective.

It's magnetic, even from
it from a great distance,

but the scale is rather small.

As a drag performer,
we have to think about

things like scale and
our impact on the stage

because sometimes you'll be
performing in huge auditoriums

and you want people
to understand

what you're trying to convey

without having to be
right up on top of you.

I think it was a
little small, honestly.

I don't think it was
terrible by any means.

Just a little
small in comparison

to the people you're
competing with,

but I do feel like
from the waist down,

I just have to say this,

it is really brave of you
to wear club kid boots

on episode one of Dragula.

I'm shocked to see that,

but maybe you're a sadist.

I'm not sure. (Laughs)

So Bitter Betty...

You have survived
this week's challenge

and you will live to
fight another day.

it takes to face your fears

and remain in the competition,

you'll be participating
in a makeover

of one of our most iconic
extermination challenges.

You'll be taken to
an abandoned cemetery

and buried alive six
feet underground.

You'll be snug as a bug
in your custom coffin,

but don't worry, you
won't be in there alone.

You see the longer
you stay underground,

the more various vermin
will find their way

into your coffin, and trust me,

these creatures love to snuggle.

The more visitors
you can tolerate,

the better you'll score
in the extermination.

After your burial, we'll
consider your performance

in the extermination along
with your floor show scores,

and we'll then decide
which one of you

will live and which
one of will die.
