were normal ass kids

doing normal ass things.

At first,
I didn't want to acknowledge

what had happened to me.

Well, there was this part
of me that kept wanting

to say it over and over
and over and again.

But not because I wanted it
to feel real,

but because I wanted to
feel less real,

to a point where it becomes
a story opposed to my life.

I remember literally everything
that happened to a T.

I remember things that I
was saying,

I remember things that I
was thinking.

I was thinking about Nick,

and I was thinking about how
he was dead.

And I was thinking about
how he didn't have a pulse.

I was thinking about, how
we were gonna get out,

if he was gonna come back,

was I going to die?

Was I gonna bleed out?

Where did I get shot?

Why am I bleeding from my face?

Why can't I see out my eyes?

And then I was sitting in my
hospital bed,

and I saw Emma on TV.

- I know this looks like a lot,

but these are my AP Gov. notes.

The people in the government
who were voted into power

are lying to us.

And us kids seem to be
the only ones who notice

and are prepared to BS.

- It was a moment
of just like confusion,

and then a moment of
complete clarity.

- Funded by the NRA telling us

nothing could have ever
been done to prevent this.

We call BS!

They say that tougher gun laws

do not decrease gun violence.

We call BS!

- The tears, the
runniness in her eyes,

the pinkness in her face.

I could feel her through
the screen.

- We call BS!
- BS!

- In that moment,
it felt like a switch

was turned into her and
it was electrifying.

She was on fire.

- That us kids don't know
what we're talking about,

that we're too young
to understand

how the government works.

We call BS!

register to vote,

contact your local
congresspeople.

Give them a peace of your mind.

- And remember just
like looking up to her

and thinking like, wow,
I can do that.

And I know exactly what
we need to do

in order to fix the problem
that we have,

and the people in power are
not doing that

because they're owned.

And that's really frustrating.

shooting at our high school,

on February 14th, 2018,

we were just normal American
high school students.

In just six minutes
and 20 second, however,

our town became the epicenter
of the world

as 17 hearts stopped beating
one by one.

Another 17 people were injured

with physical wounds that
might heal,

but with emotional
wounds that would never.

- That building right there,

that's Marjory Stoneman Douglas.

I don't want to hear anybody
else cry like my sister did

when she had lost four
friends on the same day.

It physically hurt me to
hear her cry like that.

- What do we want?
- Now!

- When do we want it?
- Change!

- What do we want?
- Now!

- Parkland was chaos.

Children in pain,
survivors guilt, trauma.

- How many have you lost
someone in this?

And how do you feel about that?

You can be mad, you can be sad.

You can feel heartbroken.

- An entire community
in disarray,

just as the media shows
up in its normal droves.

A collection of students
meeting up in a household

that does not have any
parents in it.

- It all started in this little
town, in this little house

with a group of 20 kids.

Most of whom were not invited,
most of whom just showed up.

Everything made so little sense.

- I'm halfway through today.

- I'd sleep for three hours,

and I would say,
please let me wake up.

This is all some horrible
nightmare.

- The first night I
went to Cameron's house,

I drove away with my dad yelling
at me to come back inside.

He was, before the shooting,
like a Trump supporter

and very against my rhetoric.

He didn't understand
that my grieving process

was to do something.

- No guns, that's what we want.

No guns, that's what we want.

- One of the
students wounded in the massacre

has just been released
from a hospital.

18 year old, Senior Sam
Fuentes was shot in both legs

Shrapnel hit her in the face.

She says she saw her classmates
on either side of her.

- Two kids were
killed and four more wounded

when the shooter opened fire

into that Holocaust classroom.

- Holocaust
class that became a target

during the shooting on February,
the 14th.

- Nicholas Dworet,
a senior, a star swimmer

who had signed a
scholarship letter of intent

to swim in college,
died in the rampage.

- I was with Nick just
moments before he passed away.

Only inches apart.

I met him my freshman year.

And we read The Lord of the
Flies together

and read Romeo and Juliet.

I suppose, when someone
passes away in front of you,

all you could think is
every moment

you've shared with that person,

every detail imprinted in
your mind.

Just a lot of anger and guilt.

And it's like, is there
something that I can do

to pause that for just a moment?

- That's fucking great.

- Yeah, but it's not even, yeah.

Okay.

- We were so deeply focused on
preventing it from happening.

Connecting the trauma to
the politics,

and connecting the trauma to
the problem,

the systemic problem.

- The people who actually
have the opportunity

to make the change are doing,

excuse my language, jack.

- We are creating a badge
of shame for any politicians

who are accepting money
from the NRA.

- We just learned about the NRA

the week before the shooting
in our AP Gov class,

I was like, there's a universe
where this doesn't happen

because there are gun
laws and stuff in place.

- It's the hundreds of
millions of dollars

that the NRA pours into
elections,

and they don't care who
dies as a result.

We've seen a government
shutdown, we've seen tax reform,

but nothing to save our
children's lives.

Are you kidding me?

- We know how this is
gonna end up.

We know that the politicians
is gonna say

thoughts and prayers,

they're gonna say those words

and that's all they're gonna do.

- Thoughts and prayers.

- Thoughts and prayers.

- In our prayers.

- We don't need politics
right now.

- This is not the time to
jump to some conclusion.

- All four bills
on gun control failed.

- We said, it's
always the same shit.

So what if we got to change
it this time?

where the school got shot up,

and then everybody cried and
hid in their houses for a year.

- Students are
headed to their State's Capitol

to rally for gun control.

- State
lawmakers and the governor.

- A thousand
protestors converged

outside the Capitol,
raising the volume.

- The fact that day I was
on the phone

with the congresswoman,

12 hours after the shooting
is crazy.

We're gonna be in announcing
who's on what bus.

- This is not a position we
ever expected

ourselves to be in.

It was just throwing people
at news organizations.

Emma and Jackie,
you go that way.

And then it was like that.

We were being passed
around like an STD

at Florida State University.

- Cameron Kasky.

- Emma Gonzalez, David Hogg.

- David Hogg
already got tens of thousands

of followers online.

- And you become
a part of the media.

- Emma Gonzalez.
- Brave, 18 year old,

Emma Gonzalez.
- And she came out

and she is just a total
superstar.

- All these photographers
screaming at us,

"why aren't you smiling?

Why aren't you smiling?"

You can feel them wanting
something from you.

Like with 60 minutes,

I had a five fucking
hour interview with them,

and I was saying really
smart stuff

and all they took was
when I was like,

"I don't know if I
deserve to go to college."

I had so many good arguments.

- We fucked up
interacting with them like that,

not understanding where we
could say no

and where we could say yes.

CNN, they were like, "Okay,

"give us like a bunch of
questions that you wanna ask."

- We're here tonight to
facilitate your desire

to speak directly to
your leaders.

- What they were actually
doing was picking the questions

that were the least
confrontational.

And Cameron went off script.

- Senator Rubio,
can you tell me right now

that you will not accept a
single donation

from the NRA in the future?

- That was beyond crazy.

- A matter of fact, I bet
we can get people in here

to give you exactly as much
money as the NRA would have.

- But it's not,

And you're right.
- Can you stand?

- There was this
whole narrative for awhile

but this was a generational war.

- Why do we have to be
the ones to do this?

- And I was part of that.

I was going out there and
being like,

"Yeah, hey people over
the age of 20,

"this is all your fault,
and you guys suck.

"So step back,
let us take control.

"We got this one."

- You know, before all
this, I got mad at politics.

But the one thing that
always played my mind was,

I'm just an angry freaking kid.

Well, that's wrong.

I wasn't gonna do my midterms

because I thought they
were stupid.

But that's how we allow
horrible things

like our current situation
to happen.

We are smart, we are
woke, and we are awesome.

So let's create a new
generation of elected officials

that are smart, and woke,
and awesome.

- I wanna say to all of you
in this room,

when I came back from Vietnam,
I was totally disillusioned.

We threw our medals in the
Capitol steps.

You could not see the
marble of the steps

for all the medals.

Quadriplegics,
quadruple amputees,

throwing their purple hearts
on the steps.

It did make a difference.

Please keep it up.

Do not dismay.

It will happen for you.

- The reason why
people fought so hard

to end the war in Vietnam was
because they saw their friends

coming back in caskets, dead.

- The nationwide walkout

inspired by Parkland, Florida,

students at about 3,000
schools protested gun violence.

- What do we want?
- Gun control!

- Now!

- Guns have been a part of
my life for a long time,

and they took my family and
friends away.

It's sad that it's normal
for somebody to get shot

in Chicago and be killed.

It's never normal for a
life to be taken away.

That's all we ever
wanted in the first place

was to be listened to.

- I will meet somebody
in Chicago,

and I will have more in common
with them in one conversation

than it seems that I do with
my parents.

- From South Florida

to the South Side of Chicago,

these two groups of young people

are vowing to work
together on the gun issue.

- So Emma, what is the plan?

You say you want to spark
a national movement.

It's one thing to talk about it,

it's another thing to
actually make it happen.

- We're going to be doing
a March on Washington,

where we get students all
over the country

are going to be joining us.

- Everyone in the world
knows about this.

- About March 24th.

- It's about March 24th.

- Welcome to the Loews

- I never was on a conference
call before all of this.

And it was like, who's speaking,
like who am I talking to?

I can't recognize voice
from voice.

- You're never not
working, are you?

- We were up
until midnight every night.

- The people who were
skeptical, they said,

"Oh, there's no way these
kids got that city permit

"and build that stage."

You're completely right,
I did not build the stage.

I just had to sit on two
hour conference calls,

discussing those things

where I wanted to tear all of
my hair out.

What had started in that
little bedroom

was now so much bigger than us.

It was like,
the world was a video game

and we knew the codes.

- Yeah.

- I remember being
backstage, and I was like,

okay, this is interesting,

because I've never been
to a March or a rally

or any of those kinds of things.

I've never even been in the
same vicinity

as 800,000 people before.

- Ready?

- Yeah, I think so.

I found out that I was speaking
basically the day before,

and then I found out

it was gonna be Nick's
18th birthday that day.

It's literally all what I
was thinking about all day.

I know for a fact,
if he survived,

he would have been the
first person on that stage.

That's what I think
about is like,

if they were still alive
today, what would they want?

- To the leaders, skeptics,

young people just descending

movement here,

who at just 16 was shot dead
in her home

the African-American girls

My friends and I might
still be 11,

and we might still be
in elementary school,

but we know that we have
seven short years

until we too have the
right to vote.

forefront of gun violence

for a very long time.

The day I lost my nephew,
I started to really give up.

But there's this principle
about Dr. King and it states,

"The beloved community is the
framework for the future."

My first thought was like,

I was thinking about

and all the famous people
that are having

and all the security
detail they're having,

and then meeting Paul McCartney.

And thinking like John
Lennon was shot in New York.

And then I was thinking of
like five billion things

at one time.

I am not here for me,
I am here for you.

So you don't ever have
to fear of getting shot

in your own classroom.

You don't ever have to
worry about going into

a Holocaust history class
to learn about death

and then experience it
right before your eyes.

I was even thinking like JFK
was shot in his convertible.

Oh my God.

Well, I'm not in a convertible.

I'm not moving, I'm in one area.

It's a huge group of people.

Anyone can be standing
in that crowd waiting.

It all came down to,
I'm gonna get shot here,

right now on the stage.

Never did I think I would
be herded like cattle

by a shower of bullets that
left me scarred and rattled.

Forced to huddle among those

who lost their last
living breaths on a day

that was designated for
loves and laugh.

The moment we speak up,
we're scolded

that we are not old enough.

It is as if we need permission

to ask our friends not to die.

Lawmakers and politicians will
scream guns are not the issue

but they can't look me
in the eye.

I blacked out right after
I threw up.

But it was definitely like
I have to finish this,

because it's Nick's birthday.

That's what I was
thinking about.

I just threw up on
international television

and it feels great!

Today it's March For Our Lives,

but it is also the
birthday of Nick Dworet.

Someone that was senselessly
murdered in front of me.

Today is his birthday.

I would like to sing all
together, happy birthday.

I always thought that
Nick was better than me.

You would hear his name on
the morning announcements

during his competitions,

and we would clap for him in

It's like, I always
wonder why it wasn't me.

- After the march, we were like,

oh my God, it happened.

We did it, we did the thing.

I was shocked that it
went so well.

We could have just not done
anything else.

I bet there were a lot
of people who were hoping

that we weren't going to do
anything else.

And then we dove into activism.

- Marjory Stoneman
Douglas student, David Hogg,

leading a group into Publix.

They're there protest the
stores support of NRA member,

and gubernatorial candidate,
Adam Putnam.

Publix reportedly gave him

more than a half a
million dollars.

- We expect our elected
officials to do the right thing.

When in reality, we have
to do the right thing

by pissing off these
elected officials

to get them to take action.

- And just within the last
hour, Publix announced

it is suspending any future
political contributions.

- Hey, I'm walking here.

Yeah, you're cold blooded,
so am I.

That's what politics is.

All these events are just ways
that we can make sure people

understand that we're not
going anywhere.

- David Hogg gets a lot of that,

and a lot worse.

At least three cars went by
passengers hurled vile insults.

- I started writing my
college essay today.

I'm calling it, How to Talk
to People that Wanna Kill You.

- Television is the
David Hogg channel now.

I can't turn anything on.

Listen, you son of a bitch,
what the fuck is your problem?

wing conspiracy theorist

going viral about David Hogg.

Some even claiming he's an
actor, a pawn for the left wing.

of indoctrination.

looks like

and what damage it can do.

As a young man, I had never
gotten death threats before,

as you can imagine.

I basically can't go to some
areas where there's a lot

of people that don't like me.

- Fox News host, Laura Ingraham,

a grown woman, is trolling
Parkland shooting survivor,

David Hogg, who I might remind
you is just 17 years old.

"David Hogg rejected by four
colleges to which he applied

"and whines about it."

And this isn't the first
time Ingraham has gone

for the Parkland's students
jugular.

- It's partially my fault too,

because I went on the
news so much

at beginning in this and I
was pissed off.

I look back and I cringe
because I've never had the level

of emotional intelligence

or empathy or sympathy as
Emma has.

- For me, it's more
weird than it is scary.

I know that it's more
scary for David

because he has a lot more
negativity thrown at him.

If somebody sees me at the mall,

they're most likely coming
up to say,

"Hey, thanks for what
you're doing."

They're not likely going
to say, "Hey fuck you",

which has happened to
David a lot.

- What are you doing?

You're young,
you should be crazy.

You should be unhinged.

Not in a suit saying,
"I'm here to tell",

you.

You're not interesting.

'Cause you went to a high
school where kids got shot.

Why does that mean
I have to listen to you?

Why does that make you
interesting?

working to try to figure out

you think of people who are
inspirational,

school students,

you think of people who
are a little immature,

slightly awkward, still
learning to be an adult.

job, I had a good boyfriend,

I had good grades, I was
gonna work through college,

I was gonna get my own place,

I was gonna work in a public
school for like 40 years

and then retire.

And that was the plan.

But now I honestly don't
feel whole,

if I'm not doing something
that makes up for the fact that

I had people murdered in
front of me.

- Accepting for Nicholas Dworet,

his family friend, Alexandria.

- The policy side,
the political side,

I don't speak that language.

I use humor to cope,
I use art to cope.

I knew that I want to make a

have become a potent force

in the gun debate,

but after three months
of marches and rallies,

not much has changed
on the national level.

And he's like, "Okay,
I don't know."

- There's this website called
the Gun Violence Archive

where every day they'll post
all the people that have died

as a result of gun violence.

Every hour or two, I'll go on
there and refresh just to see

who's died while I've
been working.

This is the map of all the gun
violence incidents this year

that they plot.

Do you see Florida?

That open space is Everglades.

It's a lot.

After the March, I was thinking,
this is still happening,

and we have an election
to vote in.

Shit, like what are we
gonna do now?

Gun violence should be
the issue,

but it should be mostly
empowering to the individual.

- We were putting
this pressure onto ourselves

saying this is a chance
that not everybody is given.

We have to take this energy
and keep moving with it.

So what better way than
to go around the country,

talking to people.

- So now we're
planning for this summer tour

around the country to
connect to people

all around the country,

bringing the march to their
backyards.

We have midterms coming up

and if you can get the
youth behind something,

young people have been
the moving force behind

every movement in this country.

- Survivors turned
activist from Parkland, Florida,

hit the road this summer.

They'll make 50 plus stops

in more than 20 states and
their mission

to try to turn the gun
control wave

they sparked in the spring

into an energized voting
block for midterm elections.

- In order to stop violence,

this can't just be a Chicago
thing, or Parkland thing.

We need everyone to
come together.

Talk to each other.

Vote!

- The biggest reason

it's extremely hard to pass gun
legislation in this country,

and it starts with three
letters, it's called the NRA.

This is not about swinging
districts from red to blue

or blue to red, it's
about swinging districts

toward morally-just leaders.

with the best problem,

which is there are way
too many people here.

and we do need to make
more strict policies

about who can get those guns.

It's their job to protect us

and they're not doing their
job correctly.

the Parkland students.

I didn't really follow the
movement.

When I saw all the
media coverage

and all the celebrities
like posting and reposting,

I was like, well, what
about the kids of color

who were being shot and
killed every single day.

You will see like trees

that have like Teddy Bears
taped to them

or pictures of little kids who,

and it says like gone,
but not forgotten.

So like kids who are
taking by a bullet

that shouldn't have had their
name on it in the first place,

but like, like Darius Simmons,

who was like the epitome
of like Milwaukee,

a kid who was taken by
gun violence

and his mother saw the
entire thing.

She saw her son get shot
twice, one in the chest,

like standing really close

and then shot when he tried
to run away in his back.

So he fell face forward.

Darius was in sixth grade,
so he was 12.

To be honest with you guys,

I was so done with white people.

And I know that sounds like so
aggressive and unfair to say,

but at my school, like
in January of last year,

someone posted white and
colored over our water fountains

in January of last year,
not in 1965, not 1940,

like in 2018, white and
colored was plastered

above our water fountains.

So I was just so upset
with like race.

I remember we walked
in and like,

it was all of these people
and I was like,

oh, I didn't know it was
that important

that people were coming
to hear about gun violence

in our community.

'Cause I've been at like
town halls

where 10 other people
would show up.

Hey, everybody, my name is Bria.

I'm a 17,

hey, what's up?

But I'm a 17-year-old
rising senior.

And I'm a resident of Milwaukee.

My neighborhood is so
conditioned that like,

if I don't have a gun that
I might be crazy, you know?

I remember after the panel,
Jackie comes towards me,

I did not know who she was.

She was like, "Hey, the
students really liked

"what you were saying.

"They're wondering if you
want to come on tour?"

I remember like running
off to the side

and like FaceTimeing my mama.

And she was like, "What,
like don't."

Like she, you know,
the typical mom,

like who are these people,
blah, blah, blah, blah.

Trying to get every
single detail.

I think that was like the
first moment

that I actually was like,
okay, like how can I help.

I went home and I packed
my bag for like three days.

And I was like, "Bye, mom."

I got fired from my job.

And then the clothes

I've never traveled like
eight hours on a bus.

Like it was crazy.

But on the bus we were
very, very productive.

We'd write speeches on the bus

phone calls, all that stuff.

that I wanted to reach out to

from every stop things
I had to do.

Adding on stuff here
'cause I couldn't fit it,

but I got everything done.

I had to.

from March For Our Lives,

Bria Smith and Emma Gonzalez.

- What's happening?

The millions of youth who
reside in inner cities,

grow up with gun violence
as their reality.

Youth of color have
been fighting the battle

on the front lines for
years, even here in Texas,

black men are six times
more likely to be killed

in a firearm homicide than
white men.

Texas has to be like
the most humbling for me

because I never saw any bigger
guns than I did in Texas.

And I was like, I'm kind
of scared of big guns.

'Cause Texas people don't play.

They have like AR-15s

and like just like they
just go crazy.

- Oh, yeah.

- We had security following
us on the bus

because there are protests
for panels

where there will be like
10 people

strapped to the nines with
their MAGA hats

and their don't tread
on me flags

or come and take it flags.

- We support the second
amendment.

We're all on the same page.

The Utah Gun Exchange,

known for its flashy and
upfront message,

has been following the
rallies across the country.

- While the
March For Our Lives Rally

is going on,
this group is going on,

what they're calling,
a Freedom Tour.

- At every
location, Road to Change

is faced with counter
protesters.

- Hey, if you think guns are
the problem,

how come you have armed
security guards here?

Like hundreds of
police officers.

Don't you think they
should disarm?

- No, because we're
not anti-gun.

- Oh, you're not?

- No, we're not anti-gun at all.

We're pro, people who have
proper training to use weapons,

and have proper background
checks.

- So only people who have
proper training,

so that means like a
regular person like me

can't carry a gun?

- No, if you wanted a gun, then
you should get the training.

- I have the training.

- Are you a law abiding citizen?

- I am a law abiding citizen.

- Well then you would
be able to get a gun.

- Oh, I can have a gun?

- We're nottrying to
take guns away from people

who already have them.

Sometimes we would go out
and talk to them

and sometimes the security
guys would be like,

it's not safe out there.

We don't really like the
attitude of these guys.

The other day was fine,

but today I recommend
you do not go out there.

- One of the protesters in
El Paso, Texas,

ended up following us
to our hotel.

- Can they see us from there?
- I don't know.

They look like they're
looking up though.

- They're not.
- Took their handgun

and started going down
the hallways of our hotel.

- I've been spotted.

They're gonna shoot through
the window.

- While live streaming
us on Facebook and saying,

this is where David Hogg
and Emma Gonzalez are.

- What's going on, honey?

- There was a death
threat and so it's not.

- Who sent the death threat?

- Someone sent it on Twitter
from North Carolina though,

so I'm just nervous.

- I'm sorry.

- If they kill me they
proved my point.

I think Maxine Waters said it
best when somebody was like,

"I wanna kill you" and she
told them to shoot straight.

- Hi!

I didn't mean to interrupt
you guys.

- Oh, that's okay.

- But anyway,
I just wanted to bring you guys

some weekend food.

- Oh, you're so sweet.

- At first I intentionally
kept myself away

from like all the families.

It's like, I don't wanna know
about the grieving parents.

I don't wanna know about
the family.

'Cause like that just furthers

the pain and the suffering.

And then I realized that like,

that's not necessarily the case.

I didn't actually know
that Nick had a brother.

I found out that while I was
in the classroom with Nick,

Alex was across the hall.

He was grazed by a bullet.

When I met Alex, I didn't
feel that being around him

was really triggering.

I felt the opposite.

I felt being around him
was very comforting.

- I hate when people say
like, "Are you okay?"

Like obviously the
fucking I'm not,

like there was so many
people at my house after.

So like it was good.

But like, I guess you could
say I have trust issues.

'Cause it's like,
you're at school.

- I totally get that.
- Yeah.

Like if there's glass around me,

I always look, I don't know.

- I noticed.

I noticed when you were
sitting in the restaurant.

I noticed when you were
sitting in the house.

We're afraid of the same thing,

sort of paranoid of
people's actions.

It's all just tied it
into like one

with some atrocious ribbon,

- Do you have the same thing?

- Yeah, for me,
it's like the smell.

- Yeah, I remember you were
like, "What's that smell?"

- Like loud noises, like
looking at everybody.

There isn't a lot of
people who can

relate to that feeling.

Looking for someone but not
knowing what I was looking for.

- Yeah.

- Yeah, I honestly feel like
Alex at times

is the only person who does.

- Oh, I do that too.

A teacher once was
like, "Stop chewing it."

- It reminds me that
if I needed someone

to talk to, I could.

Oh and I destroy my fingernails.

- The policies you are
marching for

will not protect any children.

It will harm children.

It will take away their liberty.

The only thing that will
stop a bad guy with a gun

is a good guy with a gun.

- Go home.

- Go home.

- The sources of those
people's anger,

it's pain that they feel

because they feel
misunderstood and misconstrued.

The reason they are
counter protesting

is 'cause they don't think
we're going to go out there.

They don't think that we care
about what they have to say.

We care about what everybody
has to say.

People feel like they
aren't heard.

- As a grandma myself,

every one of my grandkids
attend a school

where they have armed staff.

I wouldn't rather have
my kids go anywhere else

but the schools they go to

because there's somebody
there that's gonna step up.

So my grandkids aren't
cowering down behind a desk,

in a closet,
hoping and praying to God

that somebody gets there
and stops the bad guy

before he finds them.

- We also were praying that too.

While I was in that in closet.

- That's having two jobs.

Basically as a teacher,

then protecting the
kids as well.

- I don't think a teacher

who doesn't want to carry a gun

should be required to.

- I don't either.
- We're not talking that.

- You think volunteer people,

how about volunteer
security guards?

- It's a very tough
conversation to have

because putting a firearm
in a situation in general

can mean someone else dies.

And that can be the bad guy
and that can be the good guy

or just an innocent bystander.

Any of you that have been
in a shooting,

you can understand that.

Those 150 hours of training
mean nothing

in that one split second.

- So because you
don't rise to the occasion,

you fall to your most
basic level of training.

- Exactly, and no amount
of training can train you

out of that instinct.

And that's my biggest reluctance

to specifically putting
more guns in schools,

which I'm sure you guys can
understand.

- I don't necessarily
agree with it

but I respect your opinion,
that's fine.

- Isn't it better to
give people the liberty

to at least try to defend
themselves.

Isn't that more preferable
than taking my defensive tools

and my liberties away from me?

- That's what I asked them.

And they said,
they're not anti-gun,

they're just for common sense,
whatever.

They're literally not
trying to take guns away,

that's what I hear anyways.

But you hear a lot of things
from inside.

- We hear a
lot from your side too.

- This is what creates America.

This is what America is about.

is not anger.

We need to have a conversation
about this violence.

we went to Dallas, Texas.

these kids are doing something

I had no time to think about
anything that had happened.

I had no time to realize
what the world was

or what our place in it
was anymore.

I would sit down at
night and I would think,

can you believe this happened?

And I would feel nothing.

I would go to bed.

And then I would be walking
somewhere during the day.

we'd be at the courthouse

or we'd be at doing some TV
hit somewhere.

We'd be meeting with some
of the Sandy Hook family,

or whatever it might be.

I would just be in a
time when I had to be on

and I would just burst
into tears.

that we were carrying, why
did you still approach us?

school shooting

and thinking school shootings
could be stopped by something.

The puzzle piece that
you're missing,

is that I put me in the media.

I went out there where
I knew the cameras were

and I stood in front of them
and I said, "You know what,

"let me tell you what
happened right there."

Because the worst thing

that could have possibly
happened, happened, right?

Because if you had shown me
February 1st

that right now I would be
advocating for political policy,

I would say great.

I've always wanted to
advocate for political policy.

If you had said,

here's what it would take for
you guys to get your platform.

I would have said, okay,
obviously not.

Well, you know what I'm
living in obviously not.

My reality is the obviously not.

I don't know if you ever read

How was that my life?

The things I'm doing now

have done.

I loved politics.

I mean, I was at my first
Obama rally when I was eight.

Advocating for gun
control in DC.

Chances are I might've
done it anyway,

but doing it because you want to

and doing it because you
feel like you have to

are two very different things.

You look back and it's
impossible not to just say

I would give anything to
get that back.

The youth voter turnout?

If we increase that to like
10%, we can swing this district.

- It's grown to be personal
at this point for me.

I walk every single day
of my life

with physical evidence

And my journey is never

And I would never wish
that upon anyone else.

I relate in such a harsh way
because like I find myself

doing the exact same thing.

- When I got further into
the tour, I was like,

you have two different people

from like two different
perspectives.

But when you talk some

you find out that you have

It was two different
communities,

but we were sharing one
thing in common.

It was that trauma and it was
the sadness.

- One of the earliest
days that I knew Bria,

we were talking about
the day of the shooting,

things that were bothering us,

things that we couldn't say
in the media,

because we didn't want
to glorify the shooter.

And Bria had been talking about
her experience in Milwaukee

and so we just spent the
whole evening

basically discussing our trauma.

From that day on we really
like understood each other.

- I remember talking about
like planning

for the Walk Out at my school.

I got a text message saying
that one of my friends had shot

and killed himself that day.

I think when that happened,
that's when I like shifted,

you know,
that's what I was like,

okay, guns and young
people is very important.

Like we need to talk about this,

we need to address this
as a whole.

It reminded me the didst of
like the Civil Rights era.

It was Black people and White
people and Latino people

and advocating and fighting
for the same thing,

which is the essential
right to life.

Me and Matt's friendship
is unlikely.

The people in power today,

the entire blood-soaked
power structure,

want nothing more than
for us to be divided.

- To silo our cause

but our unity is their
greatest fear.

- Because when a Jewish kid
from Maryland

and a black inner city kid
from Milwaukee come together

and stand in solidarity.

- When those kids join up with
kids from Chicago, Houston,

LA, St. Louis, Parkland,
and New Town,

to fight violence in all
communities.

- When young people
from every race, gender,

sexuality,
and state defy the narrative

that we have to be
isolated from each other

and afraid of each other.

- You know that there is
a new and unsettling force

for change in this country.

- You know that we're
going to win.

that my father,
Martin Luther King Jr.,

was killed in Memphis,
Tennessee.

What you probably do not
know is the 1974,

just a few years later, my
grandmother, his mother,

was gunned down in
Ebenezer Baptist Church.

I'm excited because I have
not recently seen a movement

like this since 1963,
when 3000 students,

high school students, in
Birmingham led that movement.

So momentum is coming and
a change is on the horizon.

40% of Americans now
view the NRA negatively.

that mobilized themselves

after Parkland may have
actually helped

to change the calculus.

We have never seen a shift
in the politics of guns

for almost 20 years.

That may have changed.

- Over the course of the summer

I've had interviews, panels,
TV specials,

little articles that I
was writing

were gonna be featured in.

And then it hit me, like
I'm here in Manhattan

receiving an award.

And it's like, Morgan
Freeman's in one corner,

Stephen King's in the
other corner.

Where do I fit in,
in all of this?

- Thank you everybody.

give this award

to these three terrific people

who have shown amazing
courage and leadership

following a terrible tragedy.

The PEN America Literary Gala.

I'm so honored that I
could be a part of it.

When I was finally up on
that stage,

it felt like I was at
the March all over again.

I've learned a whole lot
of interesting things.

I could feel the same fear
at the bottom of my gut.

Education is the very
foundations.

I remember just thinking
like great,

there's no windows in this
room, there's no clear exits.

I started getting more and
more fearful

for what it might do to me.

I suppose I won this award

because I'm doing
the right thing

and prioritizing people's
lives over guns.

It's a simple and
straightforward cause.

But in a world that has grown
so chaotic and convoluted.

- We love you.

When I run off of a stage, I was
like immensely embarrassed,

probably more embarrassed
than the first time.

I'm was disappointed, ashamed.

And I was absolutely hysterical.

I was like,
off stage behind the dividers.

And my mom came up to me and
I was just asking her like,

why did I have to do this again?

Why again?

Why now?

God, I'm so stupid.

I'm so stupid.

Oh my God, fuck this.

And I remember my mom.

She was like rubbing my back.

And she was just like,
it's okay.

You're just not ready.

You're just not ready.

And I'm like, no, mom,
I am ready.

Like you just don't know.

And that's like, that's
what got me on the stage

because my mom told me
I wasn't ready.

I think sometimes I
forget I got shot.

And I think that like,
things are easy sometimes.

And then I put it on the back
burner and I pretend that

everything's going to be
totally fine.

And then you throw up on stage

the second fucking
time in a row.

Thank you so much for believing
in me, but not just me,

thank you for believing
that together

we can correct the moral
and fundamental problems

in this country.

And thank you, PEN, for
giving me this award.

Not only has the shooting
like almost taken my life,

it's taken my sense of safety.

It's taken my sanity.

It's took my schooling
away from me.

It took my fucking
normal life away from me.

It took everything.

You know what,
like I'm fucked up.

Like I wake up and
I think people

are standing out my window

and I'm gonna fucking
shoot me in the head.

I'm fucked up.

Usually like when I'm alone,
I get triggered by something

and I start thinking
about that day

and I watch things that
I shouldn't,

I would watch this video
probably a million times over,

the dots represented the
shooter and then the victims.

Watching the breakdown
of where the shooter went

from class to class,

seeing those dots turn
different colors

does not help by any fucking
means at all.

I know those details,

but they light up like a
Christmas tree in my brain.

I think about where Nick
was sitting.

What was he wearing?

Or what kind of shoes was
he wearing?

And the fact that he was

across the hallway from
his brother,

they had the ability to walk
to each other

and give each other high
fives and hugs.

But they couldn't.

That alone haunts me.

The first thing someone
said was, is this a drill?

I remember screaming
"what the fuck"

at the top of my lungs.

I thought I got shot in the head

and I thought it was dead
for a moment.

I started to black out,
or white out rather.

I was like,
just kind of in this dream,

weird state of being dead
and being alive.

I think about not like
genuine suicide,

but I think about jumping
out of things a lot

and having to completely
end my life,

like for seconds at a time
sometimes,

but not because I want to die,

but because I think I'm
going to die.

Does that make sense?

- This is Batman and Philosophy.

I bought this actually
on the tour.

We took a night where we
were at a mall

and I just needed
something to read

that was not about guns or
guns or gun control or guns.

So I picked up this book
and it's about

applying general philosophical
concepts to Batman.

And I was like,
this seems like not guns.

I was depressed and I
wasn't really realizing it.

I thought I was just tired.

We were meeting with a
bunch of survivors

from the shooting in Las Vegas.

- So I was working the
event that night.

And I see people getting shot

in front of me and the
shooters on top of my head.

- They told us details

about what happened to
their leg when it got shot,

how it felt to run on the
leg with a bullet in it,

- From my neck down.

- I'd spend the whole summer

hearing stories of
people's pain and misery.

But for some reason they got me.

I had to walk out.

- The biggest thing for all of
you to know

the congressmen in the first
district and the third district

they are already people that
are pretty good on guns.

The issue is this guy named,

what's his name?
- Dean Heller.

- Dean Heller
- Yes.

- Dean Heller has taken a shit
load of money from the NRA

and the attorney general.

- Adam Laxalt.

- L-A-X-A-L-T.

- I felt dizzy and I felt
like I was gonna pass out.

And I said,
I can't do this anymore.

- Carl, Kayla,
Jonah, Cameron and Jamal.

- Is Cameron here?

- He took the day off,
just feeling bad.

- Was he on the program?

- He was on the program.

emphasize how unhealthy we were

so that people don't think
that it's a good idea

to do a bus journey of
their own.

I was truly a broken person
at the end of all that.

Every time somebody was like,

"Can I get a picture with you?"

I was like, this isn't fair

that I'm getting all of
this attention.

I don't want it.

Nobody should have this.

Especially when you're
traumatized.

That's like the worst thing.

- I've said so many times

that you are the future,
keep going.

- People come up to us and
they're like,

"Oh, you're so brave."

And I'm like, am I?

Am I brave?

Or am I just hardheaded,
am I naive?

I wrote something.

And I said it in a way that
everybody related to it.

That's not deserving of
anything more than anybody else.

For that, one more.

David does a lot more.

I don't know how he has
the energy to do that.

I don't know what just
happened with his face.

He's such a good man.

- I feel like I have a lot
more courage because of Emma.

there and do these protests

because of all my friends.

this side of ourselves

that kind of grew out of
us from this.

Where like, yeah,
you can be really happy,

but you can also be
incredibly fucking sad.

And like the capacity for
that sadness,

that hole of sadness has
gotten deeper.

And how far it can go.

And honestly, I don't know
if there's any bottom.

$42,000 from the NRA.

time once they turn 18,

freedom to live,

and we are fighting for
the next generation.

So they won't have to grow
up how we did.
