Narration: It's a long way from Nob Hill,
San Francisco to the docks of Barcelona.

How could this have happened?

Easy, the way I do things.

Let me tell you about
it. Step by stupid step.

Because I have a hunch
that...this is not just my story.

Narration: This is the island of Ibiza,
one of the larger of the Balearic Islands.

Lying off the Mediterranean coast of Spain.

People have been coming here
since the time of the Phoeneicians.

I first heard about it back in San Francisco
from an old buddy of mine who was living here.

I wanted to get away
from the family. Take a trip.

Only thing about trips... you'll never
know what you'll find until you get there.

Narration: Anyway, for now it was enough
just to see that island coming closer.

So clean and so white.

My story begins in cafes like these.

Where every day is
just like every other day.

The only excitement is getting a check
from home. Or the arrival of someone new.

My buddy Denny was looking forward to
seeing me as much as I was to seeing him.

I should have known it
wasn't just for old times sake.

My folks were well-off and
took pretty good care of me.

In fact, my big hang up was
how to cut that old umbilical cord.

I liked the look of the
island right from the start.

It seemed so...unspoiled.

Maybe I was kidding myself
but I thought I could write.

And this seemed like
the perfect spot for it.

Hey, fellas! We eat!
- A check!

- Boy, it's good to see ya.
What'd you say your name was?

Bill.

Oh, this is the guy I was telling you 'bout
from San Francisco, Bill Williams, you 'member?

William Williams? Heh heh. I'm Stan Stanz.

Narration: Yeah, that's right. My
name is Bill Williams. William Williams.

And I get so tired of the same old jokes
each time I'm introduced to somebody.

One of the important
members of the group was Cal.

His importance was mainly due to the little business
trips he made to Tangiers, among other places.

Picking up pot, or marijuana,
for the rest of us.

That cushion he's carrying is full of it.

He's walking slowly like that on purpose,
to make an impression.

You wouldn't guess it,
but they...they get the point.

Denny was a steady customer.

And although he rarely paid cash himself, he
always insisted that others come up with the bread.

They're beats. Drifters. And they come here
for the sun, the sea, and the low cost of pot.

This is Doc, a nice kid. He
likes to play ball, read comics.

He lives here with his mother and father.

(Speaking Spanish)

The policeman is looking for
fellow with the cushion full of pot.

And Eric-that's Doc's
father-is putting him off the track.

Eric: ...l will inform you of any
such filthy scoundrel if I see them.

In my opinion,
this type of creature should be drowned.

Narration: Eric is pretty cool, as usual.

- What's the matter, Denny? No appetite?

Pass the wine.

Put on your shirt!

Care for some eggs, Bill?

Bill: No thanks, Mil. I'll just have
some wine, if Denny leaves me any.

(Laughter)

Narration: This is a typical
mid-day meal at Eric's.

His wife, Mil,
is doing all the work, as usual.

While he's probably sleeping
or getting ready to turn us all on.

(Various chatter)

- Get your hand out of my face, will ya?

Hey, hey, let me smell that. Let me smell that.
- No, no. Mmm, mmm.

- How'd you get it through customs?

How'd I get it through? Man,
those benches were so hard.

I just had to sit down.

Narration: Within a few days I
began to think of Eric's place as home.

- You know what heroin, opium,
morphine, and ephederine spell.

- Hey fellas, how 'bout that?
- Cool, man. (Laughter)

Now for you, my boy...

Narration: Eric played with
us as though we were his toys.

Only...we weren't aware
of his private game.

He shared what he had with us
and never asked anything in return.

Except that we worship him.

- What does that spell, Eric?

There's no one word for it.

That delicious concoction is only one of
the many potions and elixirs I have invented.

And which may be found in the recipe book, volume
four, of my recently completed encyclopedia of drugs.

There we are.

Narration: I was the only that Eric
couldn't get to join in his experiments.

He was always trying to get me
to sample one of his LSD cocktails.

The white poppy. The
cactus. The sacred mushroom.

Why should they be different?

Because they are.

Don't be a fool,
Billy boy. I'm not a junkie.

I'm a visionary. A prophet.

And I prophesize great things for you,
if you'll only listen.

This contains a glimpse of eternity.

Not the greatest magicians in King Arthur's
court have the power to provide that.

Not the alchemists of the
golden age of Spain. Not one.

Not one could deliver this.

Try it, Billy. And you'll see what I mean.

All you gotta do is swallow it.

To taste the fruit of
the tree of knowledge.

Look what happened to Adam.

(Wild jazz music)

Narration: Eric lived just as he liked.
And he and Mil had an ideal marriage.

He did exactly what he wanted.
And she did exactly what he wanted too.

Oh man,
is it time to eat yet? I'm really hungry.

You just had pretzels over an hour ago.
- Hey, Lise!

(Laughs)

Narration: One day at the beach, I met her.

She really knocked me out.

(Speaking German)

Narration: I said nothing.
But it may her laugh.

(Laughs)
' (speaking German)

Marvelous. You speak a very good German.

No. I live in Barcelona. I am a slave.

Two more weeks and I go
back to my horrible office.

Narration: I knew now I'd stay in
Ibiza. As long as she was there.

(Rock 'n' roll music)

Narration: She wasn't a great
dancer but she really turned me on.

Waiter.

- Yes, sir.

(Pleasant music)

Narration: We did all the usual things
that one would. And kept to ourselves.

Keep this, Bill. For me, to remember.

It will bring you luck.

You like it?

Oh no. Please, no. Please. No.

Oh, I love you.
(Moaning)

Narration: Lise's family came all the
way from Dusseldorf for the wedding.

My friends, they came too.

(Speaking Spanish)

Good luck, boy.
- Thanks, sir, thanks!

Narration: I just wanted
to get out. It was stifling.

(Cheering)

(Rock music)

Narration: Lise's boss threw a party for us.
He's the one with the white beard on the left.

(Singing)

Do it again.

You fink!

- Will you go to the United States?

I don't know.
- (Laughs) They go to the United States!

Narration: Also enjoying out little
feast were Lise's brother and sister.

He kept repeating "Take
care of her. Take care of her."

As though I wouldn't.

Bye!

Narration: Maybe I didn't make it to America.
But I did make it to American Express Barcelona.

Happy Birthday.

Narration: Everything went
great until the money stopped.

No check?

I guess I no longer exist for my
mother except on a mailing list.

I can't ask for another advance at
the office. I owe them so much now.

They won't give me anymore.

You have to do something
soon. Or you'll ruin us.

Narration: Lise worked. I wrote.

Grey, the sky like a sodden blanket. Grey,

Narration: It was pretty bad and I knew it.

Narration: As always, I felt embarrassed by

These things are a Chinese puzzle to me.

- Beautiful.

(Loudspeaker announcement)

Narration: I was too ashamed to
ask her to lend me some money.

- Bill,

Narration: Eric loved to hear himself talk. I was
never too sure if he knew what he was talking about.

Narration: Although I wouldn't take LSD and hard
stuff, I let myself be talked into smoking pot.

It didn't take me long to get used to it.

Narration: Every afternoon we turned
on until we were bombed out of our minds.

Wow, baby. I'll bet my eyes are pinned.

Usually I got out with very nice
people. Not the cheap kind, like some.

For instance, there's this guy in
Barcelona who is nuts about me.

I don't dig him though. He's too old.
Must be almost 60! And is he ugly!

He offered me a ring with a
stone that'd knock your eyes out.

But I wouldn't take it. Hmm.

That old bandit!

Narration: She did.

(Mysterious music)

Narration: She told him all about her rich friend in Barcelona who
offered her the ring and kept his money at home in a wall safe.

Eric never did anything without a reason.

(Laughing)

Hi.

- You're late.

(Moaning)

- (Giggling)

- (Whispering) Good night.

- Three little sevens.
- That beats me. You still backin' me?

What'll you have, Billy?
- Three thousand. That makes nine thousand I owe you.

Gladly. I have the
utmost confidence in you.

- comin'!

- OK, fellas. The name of the

- Tough night. - You're not just kidding.

- Yeah, farm boys always get lucky, going on about dawn.

That last hand cost all my winning. I'm even.
- That's fine.

And I'm going home to bed. Good night, gentlemen.

Narration: It was like being brainwashed.
He kept hammering at me. He didn't let up for a second.

Carol... Tell him what you told me
about this guy he's so scared witless of.

Well, my friend and I were out
for a ride one night in his car.

And when we were parked by a gasoline station that had a
restaurant and he was kissing me, well...

All of a sudden this young guy...just stuck his head
in the car and said, "Gimme your money!"

He didn't have a gun or a knife or anything! He didn't even look
mean. He was just a nothing. He didn't even have a toy pistol.

And you know my friend, he likes me to call him "pookie".
He thinks I'm kinda cute when I say it.

OK. OK. Get to the point!

Well he just took out his wallet and handed it over and gave him
his money and everything. He just...well he was so frightened.

He didn't say a word. And, and,
you know before he could say anything...

He took off his gold cufflinks
and his ring and he gave it to him.

All right, now tell him what he said when you
asked him why he didn't even try to resist.

He said, "What d'ya expect? My life is
worth more to me than money."

And when I reminded him that this juvenile delinquent didn't even
have a weapon on him he simply said, "I detest violence."

That's a man??

He could have at least called for help.
The gas station wasn't that far away.

Ya see, Billy? No problem!

That cat's got so much bread, he just likes having
it around to stuff mattresses. (All laughing)

Narration: Suddenly, I felt like my arms
were growing away from my body.

Billy boy, you just go along with Denny
here. He'll take you to the gallery...

open the door for you,
and show you to the man's office.

He'll be so busy counting his
money...he won't even notice you!

Narration: I tried to clear my head.
It was like drowning. I was afraid.

All you gotta do is wave
that cap gun in his face...

And put his money in your pocket.

And lock him in the closet.

- Closet?
Closet.

Carol's a smart little girl and if she
says she saw a closet, she saw a closet.

- And if by chance there isn't a closet, just fold
him up neatly and put him in the desk drawer!

When it's over we meet back here at Eric's and have a party.
- That's right!

This is gonna be the easiet money you ever made,
Billy. And you can parlay it into a lot more.

You take yourself a little trip to Beirut.

And pick up a little package for me. Drop it off in
St. Louis on your way across the country.

And you can forget about your money problems for a while.

Billy... Did you hear me?

E... E... Eric?

Billy.

Billy. Billy. It's beginning.

Eric. I feel cold.

To outerspace, the ocean's depths.

A lonely, cold and separated journey.

Hopelessly separated from all the others.
- What time is it?

It's supposed to last four hours, this journey,
to frozen dual landscapes.

With unexpected drops.

Deep canyons.

Four hours that might be four million years...
- Anybody know what time it is?

Time. Time ceases to exist.

And stretches out to infinity.

Still, from far away...a part of one asks,
"What time is it?"

- MA?? Ma... Ma... Ma...

I've let everybody down.

Y-you wanted me to be great, like my father.

Cold.

I'm cold!

I'm cold, Eric.

Eric?

I see fathoms deep.

(Mysterious music)

- I hope you know what you're doin'.
- So do I.

Baby, this isn't witchcraft.
It's science. Biochemistry.

In the right hands...

it can change man into
whatever he wants to be.

It's just that...I'm not so
sure that yours are the...

Baby, don't you ever doubt

Narration: Whoever felt like it
just dropped in to watch the show.

Like I was on TV or something.

This was Eric's big kick.

Now that I think of it...he
was like some kind of Svengali.

People...

I... I come...

from an ancient...people.

I have...blue blood.

I KNOW IT FOR A FACT!

It's blue. It's gold.

It's all moving.

It's so blurry.

It's beautiful.

L... I'm fifteen years
old. And I'm lonely again.

W-why am I am always alone?

Please God, I don't want to be alone.

- What's he think we are-furniture?
- (Laughing)

(Cheerful music)

Narration: Eric gave us some money
and the next day we went to Barcelona.

We rented a boat and found
ways to pass the time until evening.

- Move! Move out. Row!
Hit it. Vamos! Let's go.

Gonna take Lise with you
when you go back to the States?

Am I going back?

Well, according to Eric.

Let's go now. Would be great.

You mean cross the ocean in this thing?

To be free.

Man, you know this looks
exactly like a ship I came over on?

A freighter. A little bit newer but
not so well preserved as this thing.

Were we ever really free?

Man, is anybody? Forget it.

Denny, I don't know about this bit.

I'm not afraid but my family would just about-
- Hell, your mother would be proud of ya!

(Speaking Spanish)

Hey Denny! You been away!
Haven't seen you in weeks!

You haven't been
looking in the right places.

Looks pretty good on paper.

After we split we meet back here. All straight?
- It's been all straight for days.

I gotta get outta here. I'll be back in about
an hour. Does anyone want something to eat?

Yeah, a cheeseburger with onions, french fries, corn
on the cob and a thick chocolate frosted milkshake-

I'll bring you pepita.
- And a Pepsi.

Mmm, on your way back why don't you stop by the pharmacy
and bring me a bottle of bennies, will ya? Don't forget.

Narration: Bennies, ether,
airplane glue. We tried anything.

Anything to stay high. And
the LSD was still with me.

I just couldn't shake it. It
kept coming back in waves.

I was afraid of getting the
LSDTs. I thought a drink might help.

(Lounge music)

(Speaking Spanish)

(Mysterious music)

Hey! (indistinct)

- (Speaking Spanish)
