My favorite moments is when

I was first introduced

I started on drums when I was
around 9 years old.

Then, when I was around 14,
I saved a bunch of money

working one summer
and bought an acoustic guitar,

mainly to impress girls.

I went to school
for audio engineering.

I love all aspects of music --
recording and production

and knowing how it all works,
to then performing live.

Right now, I'm in a band.

We play indie pop,
alternative rock.

This is an incredible
experience.

also as a producer,

and the fact that

I got my love of singing
from my mom.

We sing at home.
We sing in church.

I can hear her singing
in the shower,

and sometimes I just join in.

Like, not -- not in the shower,

I sing with her.

I have three older sisters,
so growing up,

I was singing a lot
to get attention.

It was a fun time.
My childhood was amazing.

But seeing my big sister
struggle was heartbreaking.

She was diagnosed with lupus
when she was 10 years old,

and to watch my big sister...

To watch my big sister

go through such a hard time
with her kidney,

it was tough.

When I was in eighth grade,

my mom gave her
her kidney.

I just remembered
thinking that

I could lose my mom
and my sister

from the kidney transplant.

The transplant
was ultimately unsuccessful,

and my sister
still needs a kidney.

She's been on dialysis
for six years now.

She's the epitome role model
of a fighter.

And she believes in me.

I grew up watching this show

with my family and my friends.

My name's Kaitlyn Velez.

I started writing songs at 14.

I just thought it was so cool
that my favorite artists

were able to take me
somewhere else

in, like,
less than three minutes.

I'm Hispanic, and I grew up in
a very predominantly white area,

so I kind of felt like
I stuck out like a sore thumb.

And I was super insecure
because, you know,

my differences were pointed out.

But music and songwriting
was really, like, my place

where I felt so secure
and I felt so safe

and I really had started
to find my identity.

Now I take so much pride

in being a Latina girl
in the United States.

In the last year, I have put out
about seven songs.

One of my songs
that I put out --

it's called "FOMO,"
the fear of missing out.

In a month,
it had hit 100,000 streams.

The pandemic altered
everyone's life,

so "FOMO" really resonated
with a lot of people

because it was just such
a big theme in the past year,

so I'm super grateful for that.

The song is a very upbeat song.

I really changed it up
by making it

acoustic type of feel.

and because of COVID,

that wish was not able
to be granted,

but my mom sent in a video
of me singing

to audition
for "The Voice."

Not only do
I get to meet them now,

I get to sing for them, as well,
and that's a dream come true.

When I was 8 years old,
I was diagnosed

with a heart disease called
"hypertrophic cardiomyopathy."

It's often called
the sudden death disease.

I was 14 years old

when I had an internal
defibrillator placed.

I'm truly grateful to be alive
and well and be here.

I feel like my whole life
has been leading up

to this one moment.

My mom says,
when I was in her stomach,

she used to sing Mariah Carey
and Whitney Houston to me,

and she says that's how I got
my singing ability.

I don't know if I believe that,
but that's what she says.

My name is Kayla Lilly.
I'm 22 years old.

I'm from
Quarryville, Pennsylvania,

and I'm currently living
in Philadelphia.

My mom was a single mother
with four kids.

We didn't have much growing up,

so I went to a boarding school
for low-income families.

Actually, my sister was the one
who was supposed to be going,

but when I saw all the music
activities on the screen,

I was like, "I want to go."
[ Chuckles ]

It was honestly a huge blessing.

I took advantage of all
the music activities they had.

Show choir, gospel choir.
I did the talent shows.

We had musicals.

I'm a senior
at Temple University,

and I'm gonna be the first
in my family to graduate.

That's a huge accomplishment.

This is definitely
Kayla's time to shine.

She has worked hard to get
where she's at,

and she deserves it.

I think it just needs to be

the tiniest bit
more consistent,

and the storytelling
in the beginning

has to be as moving
as the climax at the end,

and finding that balance
is gonna be the key.

You clearly have
a beautiful voice.

It just felt like you
weren't on sure footing.

But then when you started
to soar

on those higher notes,
it was like,

"Oh, that's the place where
she feels really comfortable."

Those high notes
were, like, thrilling.

We just were born

What in the world?

We see ourselves
as pop gospel artists

and our main experience

has been singing together
in the church.

Music has just always been
a part of our lives.

We actually are biracial.
My mom is a white redhead,

and my dad
is an albino black man.

And so my father
doesn't look black,

but he is.

Marc: The way
I explained it to them --

I said, "Okay, honey,
you got this glass of milk.

If you put some
Hershey's syrup in it,

that's like your pigment,
so you see this,

this only has a little bit
of Hershey's syrup,

so it's a little lighter
than this other one."

* I felt alone,
still feel afraid *

Macie: It was pretty hard
growing up.

People were noticing
that we didn't look white,

but we also didn't
look black.

And so
throughout middle school,

we went through
a lot of bullying.

* I stumble through it anyway *

It's like I wasn't Black enough
for my Black friends,

but I wasn't white enough
for my white friends.

They'd be like, "Why are you
trying to act Black?"

And so I tried
to explain to them

what my father is,
but they'd say rude things.

It's kind of a trend
to be mean nowadays,

and I just --
I don't get that.

I'm sorry.

I'm gonna cry.
[ Sniffles ]

I don't want you guys
to see me.

Marc: When I found out that
this stuff was happening,

it took me back
to when I was a kid.

It was like,
"Wow, here we go again."

I felt like a failure,
like I didn't protect them.

Um, so it was really hard.

But I just began
to encourage them...
