I have to--
I-I wanted to have a job

where I can work from home.

And I started a wine...

have you always been into wine?

-Are you a wine lover?

So, you-you started this,

you launched it
because your love for wine...

So, this is basically
what happened.

My girlfriend and I--

my girlfriend who's...
She's an entrepreneur.

She's in the... beauty
and apparel for women.

We're really good friends,
you know.

-We drink wine together.
-Okay.

-What do we do with our friends?
We have-- -You're girlfriends.

And we started kind of thinking,
you know,

-we want to have wine,
we want to have more wine. -Mm-hmm, mm-hmm.

But we don't always feel great
after we drink wine.

-So... Headaches. Exactly.
-Headaches, dry mouth.

-You know, wake up in the morning, like,

-we have to function
the next day. -Exactly.

Why are we going to have
another glass of wine?

But we really wanted to,
so we started asking

ourselves, how can we make
wine better for us?

So you created your own.

Yes, but the thing was,
is what--

It wasn't anything
that we thought it was.

We-we thought it was
something maybe would--

really naively thought we would
add to it.

But what we learned
in the winemaking process,

it's what you don't add to it.

-Mm!
-And so, we knew that, for ourselves,

we were the kind of consumer

that wanted to have
what the category of clean is,

across many categories, is sort
of defined by certain things,

usually what's not in a product.

And so whether it's skin care

or something
that you're eating organic,

whatever it might be,
it's basically

how can I consume something
that I know

doesn't have anything
in it that I can't pronounce

or that I don't know what it
does to my body.

I just want it as clean
and simple as possible.

I was gonna say you-you

took out the complications,
and...

Well, well, winemaking is,
as you know

as a fan of wine,
it's a process.

It's-it's a living,
breathing entity,

-you know?
-Absolutely.

And so, the-the value

that we wanted in our wine was,
it to be just

as-as close to fermented grapes
as we could get.

What is it
that motivated you to stop?

Well, you know, I think you
probably can relate to this.

It's like, when you do something
at a really high level

-for a long period of time...

You know, you're--
There-there's a lot that...

When you're the person
who's sort of delivering

on this one thing, right?

You're the person on the screen,
you're the person who's,

-like, "the talent," you know...
-Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.

Um, everything around you,

all parts of you
that isn't that,

has to be sort of handed off
to other people.

-Mm.
-You know? So, like, different parts of my life,

whether it was my home or--

Every aspect from finances
to just the management

of just me as a human being,

-not me as Cameron Diaz.
-You're now... the machine.

-Cameron Diaz is a machine.

But, like,
for my personal person--

my personal spiritual,

you know, self, um, I...

was realizing that,
you know, it's kind of like

that-that one part of me
that functioned

at a high level wasn't enough,

It's fun to do. I love it.
I love acting.

It's... you know,
I can go forever.

I literally feel like sometimes
I have unlimited,

you know, energy and,

you know, inertia. (chuckles)

-You know what I mean?
When I'm... -What does "inertia" mean?

Like, movement forward.

-giving... you know.
-I'm gonna do that a lot.

-If I don't know,
I'm gonna ask you. -Yeah.

a certain type of way. -No.

You know, just,
like, putting that forward.

And I just realized
that I looked around

and it was just, like,
so many parts of my life

that I didn't have,
I wasn't touching,

and that I wasn't managing.
And I couldn't really manage it

because it was so...
it was so big.

Everything was so,
you know, massive.

Oh. How old were you at the time

-when you're getting
this realization? -Um, like, 40.

-You know?
-Mm-hmm. And it's-it's clicking

-at this point in a way
that never has? -Yeah.

Yeah. And I wasn't, you know,
I didn't have, you know,

I have a lot of great friends,
and I have a lot

of really incredible people
who have supported me

for so long and who--
And I really do believe

it's about the people
that you have,

you know, in your life that can
help you keep things moving.

And I had some amazing people,

and I have other people
who were not serving

-my best interest always.
-Mm-hmm.

But you don't have time
to figure those things out

if you are just going,
going, going, going

like this, you know,
with blinders on.

You're in the tunnel.

-You're in the tunnel.
-I'm-I'm very familiar with the tunnel.

and as that machine

-that you're referring to...

...is getting fed because, like
you said, there's so many people

around you, but they're
just feeding the machine.

-Yeah.
-They're not that concerned or interested with the person.

Yeah, you know, well, my--
I-I feel like I was

really lucky 'cause I had people
that I worked with for 20 years.

You know what I mean?
Who I really, I know they have

my best interests,
but for me, I just really wanted

to make my life
manageable by me, you know?

Like, my routine
in a day is literally

what I can manage
to do by myself.

I know that has to feel amazing.

-It's the best feeling.
-Going from that.

Yeah, I feel whole, and,
like, and I also didn't have,

you know, I didn't have
the, uh, you know,

I found, I met my husband.

-Mm-hmm.
-You know? We started a family.

All of those things that
I didn't have time for before.

And didn't actually not just
not have the time for,

but didn't have the space
to make the decisions,

the right decisions
for me at the times

-to-to bring that in. So...

When you talk about your team...

-Right? When you talk about the people that were around you

for 20 years,
was that a meeting?

-Was it a conversation
or-or was there...? -Everybody kind of knew.

I was just like,
"I'm fucking tired." (laughs)

"Mama needs to take a nap." -Was this at, uh...? Yeah.

-It was, it was a decision...

-and it wasn't, it...

-people saw it coming,

Everybody saw it coming,
and even, like,

my manager Rick Yorn,
who's like my brother,

um, you know, he's like,
"I know you're serious."

he'll bring me something

every once in a while
where I kind of go like,

"Am I gonna do that?"

And then I think of all the
things I'd have to let go of...

-To do it.
-...in my life that I have,

I touch now, like,
I would have to go away

from all of it,
and I don't want to, like...

It's such a passion now
for what you're doing.

Yeah, like, I literally
am just like,

it's so great to know.

And-and I actually consider
those options

to help me remind me
that I'm doing exactly

what I want to do.

business, it's a tug-of-war.

what that energy is for you.

I mean, you're talking
about motherhood.

Are you just,
are you engulfed in?

"I used to do so much in a day."

I literally just,
like, slay every, like,

15 minutes, just like...

everything starts and goes,

and stops and goes, because it's
all about her needs,

I cook all of her meals.

You know, I'm, I wake her up,

my husband puts her to bed.

We do, we're a total tag team.

You know, we do have childcare
that helps us, which is so--

-I don't even know how mothers
who don't have childcare do it. -Mm-hmm.

-It's a lot. It's a lot.
-I really do not understand.

My heart goes out to them
and they are superheroes.

Um, and I know that's where,
like, the true fatigue comes in

when you don't have somebody to
sort of like pass them off to.

-Absolutely. I mean, you give me my kids for an hour,

-I'm-I'm out of it.

I'm-I'm looking around.

I don't know how anybody does
it. I don't, I don't get it.

-I get scared if my wife leaves.

But you do see how people
are like, "Get outside."

Like the mother who, like, locks
their kid outside because,

their children outside because
she just needs ten minutes.

-I understand it.

at-at the amount of fear

that-that I'm overcome with
when she goes,

"Hey, watch the kids.
I'm running out."

And I even think back
to my childhood,

because my sister and I,
we had, uh, the babysitter

-in the neighborhood...

And we had the babysitter
that all the kids

went to in the neighborhood,
but there's 35 kids and, like,

one woman, and all of us
were just animals, you know?

We're, like, just ripping
each other's hairs,

-hair out and, like...

First of all, in your,
in your household coming up,

was it a, was it Mom and Dad?

-Mom and Dad, yeah.

Yeah, I mean, you know, my
parents, both my parents worked,

so it wasn't
like they were, like,

-off lost to us,

There was, uh,
we knew we got up with them,

we went to school and
they would come home eventually

in the evening after work.

What I think is dope
about listening to you talk now,

you know, you're-you're
kind of experiencing life...

it's like you've reached
these pinnacles.

And then after doing it,
you're now finding

your biggest success
and being able to devote

-your time to your, to your...
-It's, it is

my favorite part
of life, for sure.

-So how did you, how did you stumble into acting then?

Like, at the age of 16,
if you're modeling,

-you know, when-when did,
when did the opportunity -I was...

-for acting come to you?
-So, I was modeling.

I was doing
commercials and catalog.

I wasn't a fashion-- I wasn't,
like, an editorial model.

-Okay.
-I was, like, making a really decent living

for a young girl who never
saw money in her life.

-Okay.
-You know what I mean, to, like, make money doing

a catalog and-and...
and-and commercials.

And I went to live in Paris,
and I was there for a year.

-Mm-hmm.
-And I never worked except for one-one job.

And I'm convinced that they just
thought I was not gonna return

from Morocco,
is why they sent me there.

They were like, "Who hasn't
worked this entire year?

"Let's send her.
If she doesn't come back,

-it'll, no-no harm for us."
-So you're with,

-are you with, like, an agency?
-Yes, I was with an agency.

So you got, you're just
living there and it's...

I'm living there, I'm going
on every single call possible.

-Holy cow.
-Didn't get the job.

I came home to do my taxes.

Whilst I was home,
I went into my agency,

which here I worked
all the time,

I worked every single day.

And my agent,
my commercial agent said,

"Hey, they're casting a movie.
They want to see girls.

Will you go in
and read for the part?"

And it was for "The Mask."

And so, I didn't read
for the main part,

originally, but I-I...

I ended up going back
and reading for the-the...

the female lead.

Chuck Russell,
the director, was amazing.

He just basically said
like, "I want..."

It was down-- They were trying
to get Anna Nicole Smith

to do it, because at the time,

Jim Carrey was still a white
dude from "In Living Color."

-Yeah.
-Um, "Pet Detective" hadn't come out yet.

-Yeah.
-"Ace Ventura" hadn't come out yet.

So they were basically
trying to get, like,

a-a female star in the role.

-Somebody else to be...
-Somebody that they knew.

-Yeah, somebody. A bigger
name or just somebody... -And here's this-- exactly.

And here's this, like,
like, L.A. commercial actress

that Chuck Russell was like,
"She is my Tina Carlyle.

I want her," and he took me
through the entire process.

Like, I was doing wardrobe
and dance.

-How old are you?
How old are you? -I was 20.

And I turned 21
on the set of "The Mask."

And he basically was like,
"You're going to be

"my Tina Carlyle.
You're gonna be my Tina.

Just keep coming."
I was doing dance rehearsal,

I was doing, you know,

wardrobe fittings.
I was doing everything.

I still hadn't got the job yet.

And it was basically,
like, two weeks

before they were starting
to film.

-They said, "You got the job."
-How long,

how long did you go
through the process?

How long did you go through
the process, like...?

It was like a-a month or two,

-I think, or a month and a half.
-By the way,

understand what you just said,

this can be the demise
of an actor or actress, okay?

-Mm-hmm.
-When you, when you are acting

-as if you have said part...
-Mm-hmm.

-and you haven't been
given said part... -Mm-hmm.

It's a very dangerous space
to play in.

-But I wasn't an actress.
I was a model. -That's my point. It's like...

But you then, you're-you're...

you're engulfed
into this now dream.

-Yeah.
-You're "Oh, my God!"

-It was really exciting. Yeah.
-"So you want me to go?

-Yeah, you want me to go meet? Yeah!"

And it just keeps progressing
and progressing.

Yeah, it was really wild.
It was just sort of, like,

all of a sudden I was like...
I'm not--

I don't consider myself
a really competitive person,

but I really just thought it was
so much fun.

I had, I'd never gotten the rush
that I had gotten when I...

-By doing that?
-You know, by acting with Jim Carrey.

You know what I mean?
And I said, you know,

"All right, okay." I didn't
even know what it meant.

I didn't know
what making a movie meant.

I didn't even know how
to hit a m-- like, I knew how

to hit a mark
from doing commercials,

but, like,
acting wasn't my thing.

-You're thrown,
you're thrown into it. -Yeah, I'd never done it before.

-Are you kidding me?
So this wasn't even... -Mm-mm.

-This wasn't the plan.
This was a... -Never the plan.

-I was not trying to act.
-Wow.

I was not--
I was doing commercials.

And I was like,
"Okay. I guess so. Sure. Uh..."

You know? And then I was just
like, "This is fun. I'll do it.

Sure, great."
And then after I did it,

I had such-- I had never had
a sense of community before.

-Mm-hmm.
-Because as a, as a model, we would be on a,

you know, a shoot
for maybe a week,

-and then you never see
the people again. -Mm.

-But you know how it is
on a, on a set... -On a modeling set, I do.

-No. Yeah, you know how it is.
-On a modeling set.

You know, when they're
just like... (laughing)

-That wasn't your laugh.

my crew's problem. -It was not...

-I remember working with him
at the end of my career. -Yes.

the modeling jobs that I had.

after "The Mask" was
to play, like, a scientist.

You know, like,
a sexy scientist,

-you know, from Russia.
-Okay.

You know what I mean? Or something like this.

Of course. Yeah. -Yeah, yeah, exactly.

-You know what I mean?
-You're a perfect Natasha. I can see it.

And then, like, the lab, like,
breaks out in infection

-and, like, you know-- Yeah.

-And you tell him,

in your voice, Natasha,

How are you so in the know
at this point to,

Who was the representation
at this point?

Well, Nick Styne was
my agent and has been--

now I'm not acting anymore,
so he was,

he was my agent
all the way through my career.

I was like, "I don't want
to be put on the back burner.

"I want to, like...
I really am serious about this.

"I want to, like,

-Because then I feel like I earned it.

Then I know that I made the
money I deserved on this movie.

I want to make,
I want to get paid

for what I d-do with this movie.

So that was my mentality.

-For me, intention is everything.

what you're doing it for?

There's a lot of people
who make decisions based off

of how much money
and how much fame

they think a part's gonna get,

if that's your goal,
then when you hit that peak,

You want to put energy

your process in life

and engage and influence them.

And hear it come back at you
and be able to be like,

"It doesn't hurt me." Uh...

bullets speed by and being like,

that-that's what feeds you.

That's a different thing.

Some people only
just want to be able to walk

down a red carpet
and go like, "Yeah,

I'm the star of this movie,"
you know.

And when that's your intention,

that's when it's short-lived.

That's when you-you exit
very quickly.
