It's a thing of beauty.

Have we got everything?

Battening, the felt, the pins

the mermaid slate.

But that's never actually been on
anybody's list ever.

Well, Mr Strawbridge it's on ours
now because over the past few weeks

I've been planning a mermaid-themed
shed

for Dorothy's upcoming birthday.

With pastel shades, a painted
mermaid towel, and a roof made

of gold-edged scalloped tiles,

and my tool of choice
are my trusty slate cutters.

This is a deja vu
from the orangery.

The first time I found out you
could scallop a slate,

I was ridiculously excited,

and with the orangery,

we just did one row, but it looks
lovely, and I feel very proud

of my one row that I did.

SHE CHUCKLES

Now, these are artificial slate,

so once you cut it you get,
like, an exposed edge.

So, you need to seal that.

And I am with gold. Because
I had to seal it with something.

We're going to be putting the first
one up,

we start with a half scallop...
Right. ..because we have to have the

next full one in this gap. Cos it's
got to go over it and over it.

That's... Yeah.
That's how the roof works.

Stick a hook on the batten
beside the half scallop. Like that?

Yeah, all the way, yeah. That's
good. Yeah?

This bit here now goes in.

So, this is very exciting.

I've never seen a roof with

with our mermaid theme project.

But we've always got time
for one of your requests.

Let's have a look and see
where we're going.

darling. My name is Esther.

I would really appreciate your help
with my DIY project.

Last year, I acquired a doll's
house... Yes!

...and it's in the style
of an old Vicarage.

It looks like a lovely old house,
doesn't it? It does.

Interesting, even though it's
a doll's house, first thing

I'm looking at is the roof.

THEY LAUGH

There's a couple of tiles to get
replaced there. Erm...

You have been ruined.

I really don't know where
to start, but what I do know

is that I really want to give
it a renovation, freshen it up,

mainly for my four nieces
and nephews to enjoy.

Aw! Oh, that's nice.

The kind of things which need doing
are sorting out the kind of opening

mechanisms for the front doors,
and a lot of work on the exterior

and interior in terms of design,
carpets and walls, things like that.

Making little fiddly things.
It's not easy.

That... It's a whole different skill
set. I may go to my workshop

and see some of my big stuff,
and see if I can find something,

which is a little equivalent of it,
so she can use those as tools.

Mr Strawbridge, you're secretly
about this doll's house.

I can see... I'm a little bit
scared... ..the look in your eye.

This doll's house
project is right up my street.

So, to help me get my Lilliputian
head on,

I've come to Dorothy's
bedroom for a chat with Esther.

Hello. Hey!

Your doll's house project
is so charming, and... Oh.

Where are you in terms of
starting it?

Pretty much at stage one.

Well, actually, I think your stage
one is patching of the roof.

It's the walls. It's the floors.

It's making the house good before
you can get to the aesthetics,

because in any renovation project
that is what you would do.

So, I have a bit of mathematical
information to share

with you from my husband in terms
of working out the scale

of your doll's house.

Now, apparently a door is
about two metres.

If you measure a door in the house
and say it is 20 centimetres,

if you divide that, you work it out,
that it's sort of ten to one. OK.

Because when we start to make
furniture, you're going to want

to know how to size it up.

Now, Dorothy does have a number
of sort of bits that probably

were in doll's houses. Even the top
of this, which is obviously

just from washing up liquid, but,
actually, if you look at that,

I'm now thinking that that could be
the base of a lamp or something.

You know? I have collected kind of
crafty things kind of

over the years. So I definitely
think there'll be, erm, yeah,

some cool things to put in the
doll house.

you think need to be stuck or

It just is so different.

it's a whole new world.

gonna lose me.

One project I definitely can't let
slip is Dorothy's shed,

and the mermaid style slate roof is
almost complete.

Well, maybe just a touch more gold.

Every time I leave you,
there's going to be more gold.

I'm just sealing the ends,
because it's got an exposed edge,

and if the rain gets on it,
it will actually seep down.

So, I'm actually doing something
that's needed...

My name is Wendy, and this is my
partner, Chloe, and this is us

filming in our houseboat.
Oh, they're pretty fabulous.

I'm a nurse and I work in an A&E
department in a busy hospital.

THEY LAUGH

It feels like this is kind
of like a date boat for them.

Oh, that's super cute.

So, I've seen on houseboats pictures
of roof gardens. It doesn't take

up the full length of the boat.
The boat's actually 57 feet long.

Oh, that's good. That's good.

That's...that's...that's
a proper narrow boat. That is...

So, inside making it luxurious
at night, and doing something

with those windows. That's you?

Yeah. And gardening, getting the
water up, sort of making it safe,

making sure things don't fall
off - that's you.

OK. It feels very, very
an us job. Yeah.

Two years ago, Dick
and I transformed Dolphin,

a 40-year-old narrow boat, into a
romantic riverside escape.

Bright colours, handmade blinds,
and an outdoor decking area

brought nautical-inspired
relaxation.

And we want to share some
of those design principles

with Wendy and Chloe.

Oh, look! I got to press the
buttons. Hold on...

So, we're giving them a call
by our boat on the moat.

Hiya! Hello!

Hello.

We are sort of boat to boat.
This is ours behind us,

but it's tiny compared to your
gorgeous boat.

We've actually got ten windows
in here,

so it's just flooded with light
all the time.

It's just, we need some way of
making it look a bit prettier.

Are you after curtains,
or are you after a bit of a mixture?

Thinking nice, rich, kind of,
velvet, or something like that,

and because the windows go in a
big line all the way to the end,

I was wondering maybe even about
putting, erm,

velvet in a panel that
you can slide along.

Looking behind you, the actual
gap between windows is not of

the same amount of space
as the windows.

You've got more windows than wall.

I think we need to see an actual
scaled plan.

Gardening and the
garden side of life.

So, I would like a roof garden.
Not too big.

It'd just be too much work if it
was a really long one.

What we can do is we can make it
modular, so that if you want to have

more, you can make more. OK?
Yeah, that's true.

If you can get me some of the
measurements of the front end, yes?

We'll take it from there, and I'll
come up with a plan.

This is going to be fun.

I don't know what extra work you're
going to cause me on our boat.

I think the Dolphin's going to get
more attention now. Ah, never mind.

It might not be any work.
It just might be a lovely date.

Somehow I think

it's going to be work.
But that's neither here nor there.

Over by the boat on the moat,
I'm in my element.

Wendy and Chloe have measured up,
and now I have their plans,

I'm going to show them how to make
a modular planter for the roof

of their canal boat.

And the key is to make it sit flat
on the curved roof.

So by putting a piece of wood
across these two, we can sort of see

that actually this is quite simple.

It just misses in the middle.

See that little gap? Can we see?
Look at the little gap.

So if we were just doing something
that's got an edge...

That is seven.

So we'll have two little stands
at the edge, 70mm.

What that means is it's not going
to touch in the middle.

OK, there is any number of ways
we can join bits of wood together.

That's a 45 degree cut. What happens

if I have another piece
that goes across there...

This looks like a line there.
Lovely.

The box has got three bits
of wood in the bottom of it.

I made it this size of three bits of
wood fitted in, it's as simple as that.

That's a really, really,
really great to do it

the width of your planks.
I love that.

Then I've got my spacer,

which...is 70mm,

will give me enough to sit up
off my roof. Great.

At this stage,

this is a functioning garden
on the top of a barge.

What's the chances of me
getting away with this on top

of our barge like this? Zero!

OK, I sort of thought
you were going to want that.

So painting it,
doing whatever you want,

this is a next stage.

Next bit. Leave it to me.

So I'm going to measure
the front door...

Esther is looking for help
with her doll's house,

and I asked her to hunt
for materials she could use

on the project.

Kind of on the random side,

I have an old mouthwash lid.

I immediately saw that as a bucket
by the fireplace

with little bits of twigs
being logs.

The doll's house does have
a few things which need mending

or kind of fixing.

It doesn't stay closed.

And then it kind of hangs like that.

And if we look on the top
of the doll's house,

there's just general fraying
and peeling.

I think the mechanism
on the door is one that

has to be sorted, but then there's
lots and lots of little repairs

that could just be, for the moment,
sort of just moved over.

So Esther's going to be busy,
but she won't be alone

because I've been inspired to source
this gorgeous second-hand doll's

house that I plan to renovate

for Arthur and Dorothy.

Doll's houses date back
to around the 16th century,

and rather than being play things,

they started life as miniature
display cabinets and then became

tiny replicas of family homes.

So, of course, my interior

is going to be modelled
on the chateau.

Because nearly every doll's house

has had somebody's personality
put into it,

you can't really predict what's
going to be underneath

or how it's stuck on
or what glue they used.

But I think for Esther,
she has to just really get in,

strip everything out,

and when she gets to this stage,
she needs to get a bowl of warm

water and, look,
it's coming off nicely.

It's probably going to be
wallpaper glue.

Let's be honest.
Or something like that.

So basically, you're getting down

to the building blocks now,
aren't you? Yeah.

I have got a little bit
of a repair here that is

outside my comfort zone.

If you can do the hinge,
then I can carry on. Right, swap.

Swap. Right.

The problem with this is this piece
of plastic.

That is, by the way,
some sort of plastic

with something drawn
on the other side.

Look-see, look-see.

So I need to be able to clamp that.

I have got all my tiny clamps
and things here, ready to work.

Look, this is a tiny clamp. Oh, OK.

That's a tiny screw.

That's rubbish. It won't work.

It just goes to show,
when you're working on something

this small, you need to use
ingenuity as well as imagination.

This'll work. See here?
Oh, just using a bulldog.

Yeah. Good. All right.

That works.

Oh. Oh, there we go.

What I'm doing instead of
hammering the nail in,

cos this wood is not that hard,

squeezing it in.

So that's one little hinge.

Meanwhile, I've got
some more screws to put in.

And this is more than likely

what Esther is going to have to do
as well.

I've got all my smallest tools
in the world.

So this is a little awl.

We're going to use an awl for making
a tap hole, a hole which you put

a screw into. Right. I'm going to
put that in there,

give it a little wiggle, see?

I'm not making a big hole, I'm just
putting a little wiggle in there.

I'm going to put
a little drop of superglue

into that hole and then get it
to push through with a screw.

These are so small.

In there. Get it vertical.

That is well held on,
so I'm happy I've got

one good screw in its side -
makes a big difference to me.

So this hinge I'm happy with.

Your input has been invaluable.

Oh, you're so sweet.

I knew Dick wouldn't be able
to resist this project.

Well, another one I can't resist
is the modular garden for Wendy

and Chloe's narrow boat.

Scrubbing the decks.

They've understood my instructions
and have done a brilliant job

on their planter.

Now I want to show them how to add
a water drainage system.

What is this?

That...that is...
Who chose the colour?

I totally chose.
Why is the box pink?

Now, first things first,
I need to line this

with some plastic.

All it's going to do is make sure
that we've got

somewhere for gravel to sit.

OK. If we get a lot of rain,

there's going to be a lot
of water sitting in here.

And what I'm trying to do
is just manage the overspill.

We'll screw these in.

Held in place by battens
on the side, and battens

on the end.

So what I'm going to do is I'm going
to drill a hole this size

so I can push this through the wood,

which means when the water level
comes up to here,

instead of continuing
to rise inside the box,

it's going to come dribble
out the side.

So it's just like a bath overflow?

Exactly what it is. Great. Yes.

This...

..should fit there...

It doesn't touch
the boat in the middle.

That's great, yeah. Right,

we need to start loading it up
with flowers.

You're going to want to move these,

people put them on

and then you move everything.

Well, I just can't help myself!

Esther has also been busy following
my guide with her doll's house,

doer-upper. Getting the adhesive off
is very hard to do.

So I've brought in my mum.

Mums to the rescue.
That's what mums are for.

So I am going to attempt
to fix some hinges.

Did I mention I'm not good at DIY?

Faith, girl, come on!

Course it's going to work.

I'm so proud of myself.

what I've done all on my own.

Esther's doll's house renovation
is coming together nicely,

and we've been working
on ours too.

Oh, you're literally
just putting glue on there

and sticking down this bit. Yeah.

And working to scale means
I'm able to recreate

lots of elements of the chateau,
even the smallest room.

So this is the bathroom
that I painted.

They're our colours in our bathroom.

Yeah? Yellow and grey.

In old DIY shops,

you can actually just buy
stick-on tiles. Yeah?

And so they can be sort of big tiles

or they can be
little mosaic tiles.

And soon as I saw these,
I thought, "That's the floor."

I have done a little blind similar
to what we've got in our bathroom.

So this is a tiny little bit
of material.

OK? Hemmed with kebab sticks.

SHE LAUGHS

Up goes the blind. Mm-hm.

Where does one go next?

I think it has to be down
to the kitchen. All right?

So I didn't need to buy
any more paint because I literally

took our kitchen paint.

Now, the flooring... I found a way
that, although it was really

time-consuming, I loved.

So this is similar to this
in that it's on this sort of

silver sticky- back plastic,

but it's got the texture of brick.

Oh, yeah. Ah!

New for me - the big brick
into little bricks. Yeah.

But what makes this is the variety
of different colours.

That's why I think
it looks so authentic.

The staircase...

The staircase, of course.

How can I not think
about the staircase?

And this parquet which I've brought
over into here

is just from coffee sticks.

OK? just a little brush
and your wood glue.

And I'm just going to put it
very sort of delicately here, OK?

Mm-hm. If Esther's got to do
a lot of anything,

she might want to create a jig.

It's basically a template
which allows her to mark it,

take it off and cut it.

So it's just repeatability
and speed. Yeah.

There we go. Lovely.

Upstairs, like in our bedroom,

we've just got normal floorboard,
and these lolly sticks I kind of

thought were going to be
a little bit quicker to put in,

and they have been.

Exactly the same
with the wood glue.

Very effective.

I've gone down a route inspired
by our house, but the options

are kind of limitless.

It's a lovely thing just
to have a canvas and just know

that you can do anything
and that everything is right.

Wendy and Chloe have been
beautifying their planter.

Several times!

Decided to change the colour
of the planter.

I felt that green wasn't right.

It was a bit too wishy washy.

So I've changed it to
this nice bright yellow.

We think it'll look really good.

And now they're deliberating
on window coverings.

It looks like the ladies could do
with a little bit of a helping hand.

Hello! Hey, is that a shorter bob?

Yes. Oh, I love it.

I think I've got an idea
that you might like,

but before I run with it,
I want your buy-in.

There's two things, isn't there?

You want the unctuousness,

the lovely feel of the velvet
in the drapes,

and you want the space.

I am worried about going
across ways.

I think it's going to take up
quite a bit of space.

And in the daytime, if you're there
sort of wanting a slightly different

feel, if you've got the big gorgeous
curtains sort of draped to the side,

it will take the lead
of how the boat feels.

However, you know when you go
to theatres,

the curtains that just come up,

the gorgeous velvet draped curtains,

I think we can actually pull them
up really sort of quite tight.

I love that idea. Of course,

the feel is light and airy
and fresh.

And I think having the big drapes,
you know, I think

that might take away from that.

Now, I've got like a day coat.

And it is, I mean, itjust happens
to be sort of purple.

But to get this exact drape,

it's all going to be
in the material that you get.

This is 95% polyester. OK?

Can you see there that,
with the right material,

it actually automatically drapes
without you doing much to it.

But I'm going to do the plaiting
for you

and then give you the formula
that works.

I've been busy creating a mermaid
shed for Dorothy,

and now it's finally ready for
painting.

go and mix some paint up? Yeah.

I bought one colour.

Oh, come on!

Dorothy needn't worry,

because you can still play around
with one colour,

as I plan to create a blue ombre
paint effect,

by adding different quantities of
blue dye to white paint.

...is put two squirts in there -
four, six.

Look how pretty this is.

That is so pretty.

Deciding on different shades for one
colour is a walk in the park,

compared to the choice faced by
Wendy and Chloe,

who bravely went shopping
for curtain fabric.

Yes, some tigers!

Oh, right, we'll think about that.

Do you think this is too thin?

Yeah, it is. I wonder if it's too
much like the walls.

It's not given us a big contrast.
Uh-huh.

I think we are nearly at the moment
when we can blend.

You know all about blending,
don't you?

We're painting our three different
shades of blue to represent the sea.

And the trick with ombre is to blend
them into each other

so you're left with no harsh lines,

just a beautiful cascading
grade of colour.

You put on the darker colour...

...OK, and then you take a brush
with not a lot on...

And we work it up a little bit,

into the lighter colour.

It's not too bad, is it?

So here you've got the lighter and
the darker,

but here it just goes up.

OK, medium number two.

Number two. We are now ombre
experts.

You add the water, I add the paint

Together we are a team.

And talking of teams, Dick and I are
settling down

for another request.

I am really enjoying having a little
nosy at people's houses.

Is that normal? I can't help it.

that we started...

...when did we start it?

When you have a young family, you
can sometimes write off a decade.

So we, like, start many a project
and have some really good ideas.

So our pantry project is a small
cupboard,

that's under the stairs.

For a food store, that's a
reasonable size space.

So we'd ideally like the bottom bit
to be like wellies or shoes,

outdoor kind of stuff,

and then it's like your cleaning
products, cables...

So this pantry is not a pantry,

it's a fabulously organised
store cupboard.

We'd love to finish a project,
and a project that would actually

really help us as a family
to know where things have gone,

because that would just make
Ashley's year.

And then we can mess it up,

You know, I was thinking,

under the stairs by your office, to
actually create some storage,

because it does feel like it's
wasted space at the moment.

cos they've got so much more

I think that looks really
good against the wood.

Wendy and Chloe have finally
emerged from the fabric shop

with material
they're both happy with.

But rather than the
original idea of velvet,

they've gone for a
denim like cotton...

I like the shade of denim,
it has quite, kind of,

'70s kind of shade, isn't it?

That will look lovely.
All right.

...which means a design rethink.

But I reckon this idea I have
for their windows is ideal.

We're going for something
a little bit more simplised,

it's called a Swedish blind.

It has the same mechanism as a
Roman blind, but it's at the front.

It's quite stylish, it rolls up.

Before, we were thinking
kind of drapey fabrics,

but with the Swedish blinds,

you need something
a little bit crisper.

All right, going to give myself
quite a long stitch on there.

And do my two lines.

All right, just take my pins out.

I'm just going to make
my edges a little bit flat.

When you sew things,

getting the iron and
getting crisped lines on things

often before you move
on to the next step,

it's worth taking
that time to do it.

sew a straight line across here.

And voila.

This next stage is all about putting
these little deemings on,

which allows you to
thread the cord through.

This is a little simple
sew at the top.

You will need two pieces of cord.

If you don't know knots,
do lots of knots.

Tie the first to the top
ring behind the D-tab.

Loop underneath and pull through.

Feed across to the next tab.

Tie your second cord to the top
ring behind the remaining D-tab.

Pull underneath back
to the top and through.

When you pull on the two pieces
of thread, up goes the blind.

OK, I think this is
what Wendy and Chloe want,

something clean and modern,

and I hope this fits
the bill, I really do.

And I'm really hoping Abi and Ashley

have been on a roll with
their under the stairs project.

Having had a proper clear out
and taken out the stud wall,

Abi and Ashley have sent me
their pantry floor plan.

Now, the numbers, I looked
at them, and I thought,

"lt seems quite big."
It's eight feet tall.

And so I thought the best thing
I could do to picture it properly

is to make it.

So this is just the general
line of the steps. OK.

So I can just move this to
represent steps at different levels.

And I wanted that so I could picture
where we put things inside it.

That's a big old lump of space.

You could just put in a
work surface at that level.

Under the shelf,
you could put things.

You see the top of the door,
that's a nice space to put things

you don't want Georgie to get at.
You know what I mean?

Christmas presents, birthday
presents that you want to you hide.

Yeah. Now, getting in under their
work surface all the way back,

the answer we talked about

was putting something that
goes in and out on wheels.

Think about how we
store stuff. Mm-hm.

Some stuff you need
access to every day. Yeah.

Other stuff, you put
away and you go to it.

This bit is the everyday pull out.

So under the work surface,
every day, you just pull it out,

you get your hands to things,
yep, put it back in.

But how am I going to get my
stuff that's tucked away

in the back there?

The easy answer is this...

A little bit of cord.

This is our under stairs.

As you look out of the
study, correct? Yep.

To get stuff out, we have to be
able to manoeuvre around a corner.

Mm-hm. For us to
manoeuvre around the corner,

we have two boxes. Yep.

This box can come out first.

Ooh, it's a little tight corner.
Choo-choo around the corner.

Yes? Y€P, Yep-

That pulls the next
one out. Choo-choo.

Yep. Pull it across,
which brings it around.

But it means that you just
utilise all of that space there.

The whole space is used.

Are these strong enough
to hold the children?

Cos I just feel that
they're going to get in them.

about the planter on the boat?

How much I like just dipping the
bucket into the water and watering.

I was thinking what we were going to
do is make a little sort of

automatic water with a little pump
and things you just pop in.

No, I actually like dipping a bucket
into the moat and watering it.

I loved the brightness of all. Yeah.

Honestly, it's made me so happy
that I can see it from our suite.

I just hope Wendy and Chloe are as
happy with their planter.

as well and the fabric that
