with lots of gorgeous outdoor

space and we're constantly looking
for ways to make the most of it.

And today, I'm embarking on my own
special project -

a shed for Dorothy to match
Arthur's.

Dorothy said, "Well, I would quite
fancy a shed as well

"but I'll have mine bigger."

ls she getting a bigger one? No!

It may not be bigger but Dorothy
does have a birthday coming up,

so it's going to be a shed
with a difference.

A sparkling,
multicoloured mermaid-themed shed,

complete with gold-edged
scalloped roof.

But before the glamour
comes the graft.

Give me a clue where this thing's
going, that's the first thing.

Right, what about if we come back,
because of this slope,

and obviously,
you've got the tree there.

And it is in line, sort of there.

our forest school space

and they can't see them.

sat in our investigation dome.

because wildlife is a
passion of mine.

And there's always something
fascinating to spot at the chateau.

I love it and, over the years,

I've also loved watching Arthur
and Dorothy learn about nature too.

with their hide.

Taking on a lot of youngsters

and introducing them to nature,

So, quite young, really young. Wow.

So, one of the things
I was thinking about,

we have to find a way to get
to where you're going

without everything in
the neighbourhood disappearing.

Especially the birds, and that's the
bit we want to help them with.

How we get to it
is my number-one concern.

So, I'd love a plan of the area

and maybe it's just a panoramic
picture that you take. Yeah, OK.

The other thing, of course,

we can do is see about putting
a periscope in.

They could go and look over
a fence to see what's happening.

Yeah, that would be good. I think we
can make it from whatever materials.

Have you got stuff around the place?
We've got absolutely tonnes, yeah.

And we've got our own workshop.
I think what we need to do is

a bit of observation of the children
using this space.

The idea of building
a hide for youngsters...

It's just so in your comfort zone!

Talk about nature,
we'll got a little ladybird, look!

We'll get it in the walled garden,

it'll do good for something
in there.

This project has sparked
so many ideas,

I can't wait for Jenny
and Sophie to come back to me

with their forest school layout
so I can get planning.

I'm back across the chateau moat to
work on my own project,

a mermaid-themed shed for Dorothy.

With wheelbarrows of sand,
gravel and cement,

we're making concrete for the base.

One. Two. Four.

It's a one, two, four.

But we're going to start with a
one, two, one,

one, two.

Which adds up to the same.

See,
all you're doing is confusing me.

You've got one sand and two gravel.
Yep. But we need to have two sand.

So what are you going to do?
I'm going to put another two in.

Another one in. Right?

You've put one sand in already,
put the second sand in.

But when you're saying to one,
two, three or four

and then put two before three,
then eight, nine, ten... One, two...

...times by one... No, it was
sounding really complicated!

It was easy!

It needs a fair bit of mixing,
actually, doesn't it?

It does. That's why we've got
a machine to do it.

The machine is much easier.

Adding a steel grid into the base
gives the structure extra strength.

Right, you can now bring your first
barrowload in. Woohoo!

After a few more loads of concrete,
it's time to smooth it out.

This is my first tampering.

I have to say,

I've learned more today than I've
ever known about concrete.

But I'm proud.

And like any proud artist,
I've got to sign my work.

we can start building.

I live with my boyfriend Sam
and our six-month-old puppy, Monty,

and we've been busy doing
DIY on our '60s,

semi-detached house that we
bought in October.

And I would love your help
with my summerhouse.

I love it.

And it's very attractive.

Sam and I don't really agree
on decor in the house,

so this summerhouse
is my space to go wild.

I feel like Amy wants somewhere
that's completely hers.

I think, when we speak, that's the
first question I'm going to ask -

what she wants the space
to give her.

I would love your creativity
and your eye for design, just to

bring my ideas together and help me
bring the summerhouse back to life.

Space is important, though. I mean,
we do everything together, right?

But you have your office and

and before that, it could sometimes
feel a little bit irritating and...

something I've loved doing
at the chateau.

By mixing textures and fabrics,

using bold colours and patterns,

or giving the grouting
the gold treatment -

each room has its own character.

I just want somewhere that I can go
and read a book,

go and chill and just be outside.

I did fashion at university and
I love crafting and making things.

I've got boxes and things
overfilling with stuff that

I've collected over the years, so.

This summerhouse of yours is going
to evolve and I think, primarily,

it's going to be your space to do
some crafts,

to read and to be happy but also,
when your friends come over,

it is going to be cocktail hour.

I can't wait!

Would you use it all year around?
That's what I want to have it for,

so that I want to use it
all year round.

Just because my husband will ask me,

insulation questions?

You see, the wood actually is an
insulator but it's not very thick.

What you pack between your little
uprights, you're going

to have to line the inside of it.

It's not plasterboard needed,
you can put

a bit of hardboard in there, you can
do anything you want, aesthetically.

And since we're into the word
"aesthetic", I'm going to run away,

because that scares me now.

I think, for me, the next stage is
I want to get to see some visuals

of what your aesthetic
would be like.

But, no matter what, we've always
got time for your projects.

A few clays ago,

Sophia and Jenny asked for help
making a hide

for their forest school
so the children could bird watch

without frightening off
the wildlife.

Or me, for that matter.

We were thinking of
starting it maybe here,

so when the children do enter
sort of the forest school space,

they're immediately sort of hidden
from those birds...

I love the fact they're thinking
about their route in.

I like this project.

In fact, it's inspired me
to build one for Arthur and Dorothy.

And what a hide really needs
is a periscope.

We are going to make
a submarine periscope.

This is a 100mm pipe that,

when you go up to our bathroom
in our suite and flush the loo...

DEEP, ECHOING VOICE: ..poop goes
down a pipe like this.

What do you see in that mirror?

Periscopes work by

reflecting light onto two mirrors

positioned at 45-degree angles

at either end of a tube.

The image bounces around the corners

for the viewer to see.

Daddy's already done
some preparation,

so we're all ready for this, look.
We have here... I can see you, Dad.

It's a mirror.

But this is a mirror
that's been scored

with a little diamond cutter, yes?

What I've done is - here, look -
that's a bend for a poo pipe.

And if we now take this
and put it onto here,

that gives us part of a periscope.

And then we have the other one
like that.

Like this.

You can have it at the bottom.

Look in that one. See the periscope?
Oh, my Gawd!

This is the bit in the top
and this is the bit in the bottom.

But how do I move it?

We're going to stick some bits
out of here, like this,

so we've got handles to turn around.

Stand clear. OK!

CIRCULAR SAW WHIRS

Spread a little bit round
the inside. OK.

This bit here comes to here.

Shove it in the whole,
move it around.

Once the glue has set,
I'll add camouflage paint

and we'll be almost ready
to bird watch.

First, I'd like to see
how Amy's getting on

finding design inspiration
for her summerhouse project.

Ijust thought I'd have a dig around
in my box of headscarves.

I love wearing them,
and I collect them wherever I go.

So this is the kind of print
that I'm going for.

I'm just going to have a dig
through my photo albums,

specifically from my trip to Hawaii.

Love the pink with the orange,
and obviously I love the greenery

in these sort of cactuses
and succulents.

There's a little twinkle
in Amy's eye.

You can just see her light up.

The oranges, the pinks,
the yellows, you know?

And when Amy gets her summerhouse,

she's going to take over the world
with colour.

is a really comfy seat.

I'd like to be able to

I think there's only
the back three panels

that haven't got windows on them.

I know you're going to put something
bright in terms of wallpaper -

or one of your own creations?

Originally, I was
thinking of wallpaper,

but when I went down there
to do the measurements,

I had my headscarf
and I was thinking,

"Oh, I could potentially
draw something like that."

That just put your stamp on it,
doesn't it?

So this is what I was thinking of...
Oh, great.

...because it's got
sort of subtle parrots

that are just black-and-white, but
then there's pops of colour in it.

Brilliant. So, if you send me
a picture of that,

because I am going to
put your vision onto one sheet.

What I am feeling is that

she is going to have
her hanging pot plants,

she's got a lovely comfy chair,
her drinks trolley, craft area,

and, of course, Amy's art.

She's got a lot of dog work
to get on with.

I'll refine this design
and show it to Amy later.

But now I want to see how Sophia
and Jenny have been getting on

with my guide to making a periscope
for their bird-watching hide.

How many people
have ever built a periscope?

This is going to be great.
The kids are going to love it.

But, before we can order
pernscopes up,

I want to show Sophia and Jenny
how to get the kids into their hide

without disturbing the locals.

Camouflage - a hide -
is actually very simple.

I seem to remember back to
when I was in the cadets.

Shape, shine, silhouette and sound -
all things to be avoided.

So, for us, we've got the dome here
and we've got a set of bushes,

and this is the marshland area.

That's a great place to go
and look for wildlife.

I'm going to put a couple
of fence panels,

and the fence panels
are going to stop me

being able to be seen
from the marsh.

So the way in is number one
and number two,

which is equally as important,
is what we do for the children,

how they're actually going to
enjoy the hide.

That is very simple.

By putting a piece of wood
across the hide,

you can then lay vegetation
and branches on the top

to give you a roof,
which kids will love.

Or, this end, you can
put a couple of verticals in

and that will hide you
from the back.

Of course, in here,
what they're more interested in -

there's going to be a wee periscope
to look over the top.

And we're also going to have some
little holes to peek through.

And anything they look through,
that makes the adventure.

Also embracing
her own adventure is Amy,

who's followed Dick's advice
on insulating her summerhouse.

So the main big difference
is that now it is fully insulated.

I can start working my magic and
painting and decorating the inside.

And I think this is a great time

to show her my finished design
for the interior.

Actually, the view is quite good.

It doesn't feel like things
are a long way away.

Just quite happy to spend time here.

of different coloured glitters.
It was very funny!

Amy's bringing her summerhouse
project to life,

and like Dorothy,
she's run with the colour.

I've spent the whole weekend
painting,

sort of colours that I love and
just adding a bit of a splash of me.

I've never made a glitter base.

I'm feeling a bit jealous.

Dorothy's shed still has
plenty of colourful stages to go.

And we have a project

A greenhouse that's big enough
to grow taller things

such as tomatoes and beans,

but small enough to fit
in our terrace behind us.

I build a greenhouse
with my dad.

I must have been seven or eight,

and it produced tomatoes
for the family for ten years.

Oh, my goodness.

So the reason I would like
a greenhouse is because

it would combine all the things
I love doing,

which is making, engineering,
cooking, and gardening.

He is completely rounded!

I'm personally really looking
forward to making something

that we're properly
going to use.

That's a bit special.

Since moving to the chateau,

I have loved bringing the
walled garden back to life,

including the 19th century
greenhouse

located against the sunny
south-facing wall.

It's kept us regularly supplied
with everything,

from tomatoes and lettuces
to watermelons and grapes.

So where better to meet Joe
and Jamie than right beside it?

The shape of this greenhouse
is quite similar to something

that Jamie and Joe are going to
want. It's all about

how much space and what shape
we're going to make things.

about our greenhouse

is the wall absorbs the heat,

which means that you don't
have as much problem with frost.

You think of the shape of your wall,
I need to understand the envelope

you're going to give up to growing.

It doesn't have to be a simple
shape, it can actually

be a more complex shape
that allows you to sort of

use as much as possible.
That would be cool.

I've come to my tresorerie
to see the artwork Amy's created

for her summerhouse interior.

These are just things
I've been scribbling,

and bits and pieces and ideas
have come to me.

They're quite cute
little parrots.

So I've come back to my original
drawing, and I've started

adding some colour now.

Just to see what it looks like, and
see how it would look on the wall.

So this is where we're at.

Just going to have a play around
with it once it's on the wall.

If it's a really big space,
I actually think you should

play around with it in front
of her, and then

transfer it onto the wall,
and I have got a bit of a trick

that I'm going to show Amy.

Amy has sent me her artwork,

and my trick is to use a projector
to transfer it onto any surface.

To demonstrate, I'm doing
a test panel on an old door.

This is Amy's design.

As you go into her summerhouse,

it's going to be the first thing
you see on the back panel.

Straight ahead of you.

Whatever size Amy wants
to put her picture on,

she can with a projector.

Make the picture
different sizes for me.

Oh!
Oh, yeah, there we go.

You could have a budgie head
on there. Yeah, if you wanted that.

Because Amy's design is actually
a big black thick line,

I'm actually going to go in
with a marker pen.

No pencil, just a marker pen.

Oh! I feel a bit nervous.
Where am I going to start?

Projectors aren't as expensive
as they used to be,

and with attachments for mobile
phones, this is a design trick

you can use
anywhere around the home.

Doing it yourself
is the thing, yeah.

All of a sudden
you become Banksy.

have been perfecting the shape
and size of their greenhouse.

So if we do, like, this wide,

and just do it all the way to here,
or whatever we can get away with,

then we could do, like,
a vertical bit, like that height.

That's a good amount of space.

what we're going to do,

and I suddenly discovered I need to
have a greenhouse like yours here.

You know, the width
of your greenhouse,

see how long that arm is?

For you to reach
into your greenhouse,

you can do it from the doorway
very easily.

That's a very important design
principle for us, isn't it?

Yeah. Making sure we can reach
everything we want.

What I think I need to do
is talk to you about how we are

going to put on the Perspex
or glass onto our frame,

then to make it nice,
there's going to be some painting

to help preserve to keep things for
a long time. Yes, that makes sense.

Nothing's going to stop you here,

And there's a simple carpentry
technique Joe and Jamie will need

when constructing the windows
of their greenhouse.

In fact, it works on any window,
and it's called rebating.

This will ensure the glass or
Perspex sits neatly into the frame.

I have got here a piece of wood.

Shows the little rebate
on here that means,

if you take your glass -
Perspex, glass, whatever you want -

you basically want to be able
to do with this with it.

You want to be able to sit it in,
so you can actually...

Look at that for a finish.

I'm going to put it here in a clamp
just to hold it still.

You're going to want
to mark your rebate.

to be able to get your pencil,

Make sure you go slowly

I've cut it all the way along.

I've got to say,
that's what I've been dreaming.

And if you don't have power tools,
there is a simpler method.

We could get
a little bit of beading,

mark where we want the glass to go,

and attach a piece of beading
to this.

Well, then you have your rebate.

Done. Got a rebate made.

It's quick and easy. Me like.

Whichever technique Joe and Jamie
choose for their greenhouse windows,

this should give them
a professional-looking finish.

And inspired by her old craft room

I've combined the two
for a fun finishing touch.

I've decided for Amy that we are
going to do some cactus pincushions.

She's going to need the felt.

She's going to need
a little bit of stuff

to stuff it with.
It can be anything.

She needs some pots
and she needs a needle and thread.

There's just what you would
think of a cactus in a desert,

I guess, that shape,
and this one as well,

which actually I think looks
sort of quite cool as well.

It is literally a matter
ofjust drawing around them

and cutting them out.

Running stitch in and out,
in and out,

or blanket stitch,
which is through and over.

I'll show you.

You pull it through the hole,

and then put the needle in the loop,
like that, and pull it.

That's it.

I think I'm going to stuff it

while I still have a little bit
of room to stuff it.

Hey, do you want to do

I'd rather go and weld something,
to be honest.

It is quite sort of satisfying,
stuffing, and

you can see it's really taken shape,
and actually, like a cactus,

it's kind of gone a bit sort of
gnarly, which I love.

Another idea for another cactus
is circles.

Running stitch, turn it inside out,
and stuff it,

and she'lljust get that.

Now, this is, I think,
the clever bit.

I'm going to come up in the middle.

And you pull that, it's going to
change the shape. Yeah.

So then I'm going to go
this way, you know, you see?

Yeah.
Start getting the shape.

There we are.

It'll look cact-y
when you stick it in a pot.

Just put a little bit
of glue here.

In there.

I'm turning them
into pincushions.

And Joe and Jamie are
aiming for pinpoint accuracy

as they tackle the rebating
I showed them for their greenhouse.

It's supposed to be on the line.

That slides in there like that.

Time to put my greenhouse together,
and rather than using glass,

I'm going with Perspex,

which I think will be ideal
for Joe to use, too.

The Perspex needs to be hinged up,
OK?

So first things first
is Perspex. Yeah.

This is just bits of wood
that have been put together,

you can see the bits
that have been rebated,

see the little rebate areas?
Yeah, great.

The Perspex has been cut
to the size I'm after.

Now, this sits in here,
comes out.

Fits in.

Put this in here like this.

This is holding on the Perspex,
that's what its job is, OK?

So you're stapling into the wood?
Perfect.

Not into the Perspex.

Right, so this now
has to be attached.

Get the bottom screws in.

are never straightforward...

using the rebating I showed them,
and now I can't wait to see

how they've turned their city
terrace into a haven for growing

fruit and veg.

are really pleased with that.

a big step forward.

doesn't think it's perfect,

of cushion. We did the little one

as a pincushion, and Amy's done

of a shelljust with some boarding

I think hopefully she'll...

It'll be a nice, pleasant surprise

to see the design and all the bits
and pieces that I've done.
