And a few weeks ago I took
the plunge to make a wildlife pond

filled with rainwater
in the walled garden...

Slowly and steady,
because otherwise it slops.

...and today it gets its first
inhabitants.

Frogspawn.

What we're going to do is
we're going to pour slowly,

and then there's going to be
a couple of "blups",

and the blups are the jelly
coming out, OK?

Slowly, slowly, slowly, slowly.

Look, I see an alive one!

Blup! Oh! Look - we've got things
living in our pond,

and we haven't finished
building it yet!

And speaking of unfinished...

especially for our new shrub...

Hi, Dick and Angel. My name's Lexie

and I'm currently in the process of
renovating my first home,

and I have a project

that I would really love you
both to help me with.

It's a very dusty old coal cellar.

Wow. Love it!

That's a good space.

It is.

The intention is for the space
to be kind of a speakeasy... Yes!

...1920s style bar

where I can have a bar and movie
area for friends and family.

So, please help me turn
my dingy, dark, miserable cellar

into somewhere that's emulant
of that old Hollywood vibe.

I'm quite excited by this.

Whenever I used to go to something
that resembled a speakeasy -

no, I don't mean it was
illegal drinking!

I am listening here! No!

Just thinking...
No, there's a lot, you know...

When I was being a
crusty army colonel,

you were off going to speakeasies.

No, but I have been to lots of bars
in the arches and in basements

that have been inspired by that era,

and what I want to do is kind of get
into Lexie's mind

and see where she's going
aesthetically.

I've just written down, "Damp proof,
electricity and lights."

And I've written down,
"Cosy, mirror, red curtains."

Originating in 1920s America
during Prohibition,

speakeasies were nightclubs
that sold illicit alcohol

and were often
to be found underground -

and I know just where to find
inspiration for Lexie's project,

The chateau's boudoir.

This room was always a very,
very dark room,

and, actually, the light in here

inspired the way that
I was going to go with it,

and I've gone for blacks
and burgundies and golds,

and greens, actually, as well.

But before I get too carried away,

I need to check that Lexie's got
the same vision.

Hello, darling! Hello!

Lexie, I squealed
when I saw your project.

I mean, a speakeasy!

Yeah. There's something about
it being in your basement

that's just quite exciting.
Yes. Yeah, yeah, definitely!

Well, let's just start on the feel.

So, in terms of colours, I'd like
it to feel quite rich down there.

I think that's that,
kind of that era. Yeah.

So, it's deep greens or reds
or things like that.

Really opulent. Yes.

And glamorous. Yes.

And what elements do
you specifically want?

A bar. Yes.

Seated? Yeah.

Seated, yeah, definitely,
with that back brick space.

Are you looking to have
a cocktail cabinet... Yeah.

...or are you thinking
that your coal chute,

that that becomes your
cocktail cabinet?

That's a great idea.

I'm really getting into, "Where are
we gonna put our cocktail sticks?"

I probably won't leave, by the way.

that you think would be exactly
right for this project

shakers, you know, pineapples,

any of these little bits that
you think are going to go down

and I'm going to start
creating that room. Wonderful.

I want to check on the frogspawn
we introduced to the pond.

Those tadpoles are going to get
bigger and bigger and bigger,

and then gradually they're gonna
grow legs and become little frogs.

There must be thousands
in there.

When these come out,

So, every one of these frogs
are our friends.

When we get, like, an actual frog,
I'm going to keep one as a pet.

Well, Arthur should be spoilt
for choice.

I'm Mandy...

...and we live here in Shetland.

They don't sound like Shetlanders.

I have no idea what croft is.

Crofts are basically
like smallholdings,

but it's usually, you have to have
animals and grow things.

It's like a way of having
self-sufficiency on a bit of land.

They've made a decision to come
to an area with a croft

and live differently.
Yeah. That's a huge decision.

That is stunning. Oh, I love it!

Being an old croft house,

it's only one room thick,

so, if we have guests
coming to stay,

we have to walk backwards and
forwards past them,

obviously, while they're in bed.

You can see that this is the walk
through for our bedroom.

So, we need to be able to access

through the door
we've just come through

in order to reach the bathroom.

We looked at a couple of chateaus,
and they had amazing frontage...

Yes. ..but there were
one room thick,

and it's like they old sort of idea
if you go from one room,

one state room through a door
to the next state room,

through another door
to the next state room...

That's because that's
the easiest thing to do.

Before we come up with any
suggestions for them,

I think we need to get a style head
in there, understand what they want,

and then we'll come up with the
technical bits, yeah?

Completely, completely agree.

Although the chateau is huge,

it has all sorts of
unusual nooks and crannies,

as well as some simple
yet effective room divisions...

...and we are joining Mandy and Paul
at one of them.

Yeah, well, this is
the honeymoon suite,

and this alcove had beds.

There were basically
curtains to keep the draft out...

...and people have the beds
behind the curtains.

How private do you want
that area to be?

It's not going to be soundproof.

Because, I mean, the whole
house isn't soundproof.

It's like Quality Street,
it's made for sharing.

So, people have to be discreet -

but in terms of giving them
some privacy

so they can get changed
in private...

How much of the space are
you prepared to give up?

Well, because the croft
goes right up into the eaves,

we've got no loft space.

So, really, we need to be able
to create some storage in here.

Sure. What we need to understand
is the size of your space,

and if you could just sort of
shade an area

and say, "This is the area
we think should be private."

If you could have a little look

for any materials that you've
potentially got, as well,

for curtains... Yeah.

Right, I think we've all
got a bit of homework to do.

Mainly you guys, for the minute,

Two years in, learning to live
with the place.

That's a really big thing.

You have to live in a place before
you know how you want to use it.

Yeah. It was three years before we
started on ours.

We should have started with a croft,
it would have been so much easier.

We should have started with
a bungalow,

it would have been really easy.

Although we've no guests
at the chateau right now,

there's still plenty
on our to-do list.

And we're not the only ones who've
been busy.

A few days ago, I asked Lexie

to draw up a plan of the cellar she
wants to turn into a speakeasy.

But she's gone one better

and sent me a guided tour.

First of all, the coal chute.

This will be sandblasted -
hopefully, come up nicely.

This is going to be, hopefully,
the seating

for when we're watching movies.

And I think, with some nice
upholstery and nice cushions,

we can make this feel really cosy.

I've started to collect some things
just to give you an idea

of my style - just things
that are a little bit quirky,

not kind of your normal
run-of-the-mill.

I found this black and white
tile that I had left

over from a project. They're nice.

I think that might pop
really nicely against the brick.

And then I also grabbed this
offcut of some brick wallpaper.

That's hopefully how the wall's
going to look down there,

once it's been shot blasted.

Come and have a little look at this
brick. That's wallpaper, isn't it?

But that looks like what she's got
already.

What's going to happen
when she sandblasts?

It's like sandpapering it. Right.
But it's much more aggressive.

It would clean off all the bricks
and it's all going to be uniform.

OK, I need to speak
to her about that.

Go and get all the loose stuff
off of the brickwork. Yeah.

Now, the big job that you've got
to do, which is going to absolutely

elevate this place, is obviously
your seating area.

Are you up for doing that?

Yes, I'm going to give it a go.

This is basically plywood,
foam and velvet.

You can just do any shape.

Have you done any upholstery before?

I've only done chairs.
But you get the concept?

Yeah, I think it's just breaking
it down into chunks

so it doesn't feel so overwhelming.

I'm delighted Lexie is up for trying
a banquette in her speakeasy.

Coming from the French word for
bench,

they have either placed
against or built onto a wall.

And now I've cut my wood to shape,

I've come up with a simple
but effective way to upholster it.

She's going to have a staple
gun, her Dacron and her fabric

cut to size.

Bottom-top or top-bottom,
whatever you want.

Good. That's my first bit.

Then I've got my first bit of
fabric.

So, on this one,

I'm just doing a folded corner.

OK, now, I've got this sort of big
bit of...of fabric,

and I've got to get it round
the curve.

So you kind of manipulate it. But to
make sure I've got no creases,

so I can see I've got no
creases there...

OK.

OK.

First one.

Oh, wow. Done.

And on with the next one.

Right. Now, this is similar

to, like, an upholstery tape.

I'm using just a piece of card,

but it's going to give this lovely
crisp edge.

What I'm going to do is

I'm going to put in one here,

pop it right on the edge.

One here.

All right. Now I'm going to
just check...

Oh, yeah. Look, I've got a line.
That's got a nice, crisp line.

Yes.

Now I'm happy it's in place...

Do we buy bulk orders of staples?

So at this point, Lexie would do
the foam and then the Dacron,

as she would have done
the first time.

Not just for speakeasies, banquettes
can add extra seating in any room

where space is tight.

There we go.
There'll be a seat there.

I'm happy with it.

But, most importantly, I think
that Lexie can do it

and enjoy doing it.

Whilst Lexie stock up on staples,

I need to find out how Shetland
crofters Mandy and Paul

have been getting on with measuring
up for their privacy screen

and storage.

What have they sent me?

What's that? 340.

Er, 179.

That's a good size space.

I think I've got enough information

to go and put something together
for them,

and just see if we're going the
right direction.

So, in order to show Mandy and Paul
how to create some privacy for

guests, and storage for themselves,

I've made a mock-up of their croft
space in my workshop.

Our mission is to screen
this but over here, so I can go

here and nobody can see
what I'm doing, OK?

Here they're going to be
building their wardrobe.

So this doorframe is attached
on the corner of their wardrobe.

We'll turn it into a room by
hinging the whole frame

around to this position.

Click it into the ground.

That is just genius.

And the thing is with the curtains,
is that... I haven't got there yet.

Because what I was thinking...

I need to see what's going on
up there.

All I'm doing is putting
something to hold this up here,

like this.
When was last time I hung a curtain?

I don't know.
I was just thinking that.

Not in our relationship.

The curtain is now available
to pull.

But we have to take it across to
the far side.

Look at the little stainless steel
hook... Yeah. See?

If I get this to attach
to that, we will have done

something quite clever.

So this is just my little block.

We take the end of our cable...

Not enough tension,

so what I have to do is tighten it.

And that's what these little
tensioners so.

See? It's tightening it up,
nice and tight.

OK. I think that's great.

That doesn't look too terrible
as it is, yeah?

In the stowed position...

...the curtain stays there.

You've worked out the privacy,
but also their storage. Yeah.

It's great.

create a 3D mood board to help
inspire a design

for Lexie's speakeasy.

Lexie's got that trunk, hasn't she,
of all her bits and pieces?

I've sort of done the same thing
and I'm pulling it together,

more to kind of get me into the next

level of taking on Lexie's
sort of design.

This is basically going to be a
table full of bits and pieces. Yeah.

So a mood board gets you
in the mood?

To me, this is the star
of Lexie's speakeasy.

It says glamour. It says I'm going
to have a drink in a minute,

and I've got to put my best
perfume on.

The chateau is buzzing
with excitement

as our wildlife pond is coming
to life.

Lexie has been hard at work
on her basement speakeasy.

I think that, after it's hard,
a good to the dry cleans.

The finish will actually take quite
nicely for painting.

The floor is going to be stencilled
using the pattern from her tiles

and her banquette seating is
literally coming together.

What's really irritating
is that I've bought a bed

that's really similar to this

and now I can see how easy it is to
do, I wish I'd just done it myself,

but hey-ho.

For a first-time, beginner job...

...it's not too bad.

Back at the pond, we've been
introducing some local wildlife.

I have really bad hay fever,

but I continually come back
to wanting that bouquet of flowers.

I'm planning a Great Gatsby-inspired
wedding.

My love for vintage definitely
came from my nan

and listening to her stories
when she grew up in World War ll.

This was in my grandma's house

and I just thought
it would be really lovely...

I already have a vision.

in the bouquet.

But because the wedding colours
are white, black and gold,

I really would love to still

In our six years at the chateau,

been at the heart of the styling.

I'm going to show her how she can
create sneeze-free flowers

from the simplest of materials -
papen

Izzy and I talked about doing
origami flowers or roses

and we talked about her nan.

But, actually, since then, it's kind
of grown, like a rose does,

because there's going to be a flower
for every member of the family

that's not here,
which is quite sweet.

Now, Izzy sent me over
a little song that reminds her

of her nana, or her nana.

It's We'll Meet Again. Hey!

There's generations of us who know
Vera Lynn.

We like a bit of Vera. Let's go.

So, I just printed out a song sheet.
OK?

But this is the most important
thing.

It has to be double-sided,
you see,

because when it goes onto here,
you do see the back and the front.

And this is just
a little petal template.

I'm just going to draw round it.

I'm just going to cut this out.

I'm going to put it on just
like a kebab stick!

And I'm going to roll them
before I put them on.

This little bit here
is sort of the fiddliest

and the most time-consuming.

But I can imagine, if lzzy's there
with her mum and other...

It's just nice,

there's no stress or difficulty
either in this as well.

Right, I pull this in now.

I'm just literally going to put
a little bit around here.

And then I'm going to just push
a paper onto the glue.

Get my first one in.

You actually only need to lift
that one petal up

and glue it into place.

And then all the others,
because they've already been folded,

they sort of just go into place.

I quite like the look of. Yeah.

This is one layer of petals
and this is my bud.

Now I'm going to put another one on.

Everyone, like a flower, is
different, and that is the beauty.

And these will essentially
last forever.

I've just been looking into
my homework

The flowers are incredible.

So, what I'm seeing is black
and gold

and kind of like
dusky pinks and reds.

Now I've got a better sense
of lzzy's style,

I'm ready to get creative with

some hay fever-friendly
dried foliage

and some spray paint.

The pigment in that
is just stunning.

That gold is exactly the gold that
reminds me of lzzy's grandma.

Prep work done,
it's time to build a bouquet.

Some of these are faux flowers,
sort of silk flowers,

and some are not flowers at all.

These are my feathers.

Now, for me, I've got this spectrum
of a vision

and from one end, it's like a
classic bouquet

kind of made with colours
that Izzy likes,

and on the other end, I've got
a really Art Deco,

Great Gatsby-inspired, black,
gold, lots of feathers

that doesn't really feel
like a classic bouquet.

So, I think I'm going to start
by getting some of my eucalyptus.

Just collecting
some of the black bits.

I'm going to break it up with some
other black faux flowers.

These are just little feathers
that I've attached with a wire,

but I like it cos you can be
really pliable with this.

I've got these,
which I completely love.

They're going to give it
a different texture.

For me, they really epitomise
that era.

I'll get my flapper dress on.

This is one direction,

A few months ago, I was looking
for a natural solution to deter

veg-munching pests
in our walled garden...

...so I decided to build a wildlife
pond to attract frogs, toads

and other helpful little beasties
to protect my patch.

We collected plants
and organisms from the surrounding

marshes to populate the pond.

And, after lots of hard graft
with my top team,

the pond has finally
come to fruition.

There's going to be a score to see

who can see the most wildlife-y
things here. Oh, Dorothy's started.

Not only is it a great way
to attract natural predators

to keep the slugs off my cabbages,

it also teaches the children about
the magic of Mother Nature.

Someone trying to avoid getting
too close to nature

is hayfever-sufferer Izzy,

who asked me for help creating
a sneeze-free bridal bouquet.

So, today I am spraying
some of the faux foliage

and some foliage I've got
from the garden,

just like Angel showed me how to do.

And with the wedding just a few
months away, I've come

to the orangery - where so many
chateaux brides have celebrated

their big day - to see
how she's got on.

Well, this is quite exciting.
It's the closest to a wedding

you've got at the orangery
this year.

It is. That's why it's felt good,

but also Izzy and her desire
to make sure that her bouquet

is quite meaningful
is very, very special,

and - I don't know - it's something
that I really related to. I love it.

I've got here
the foliage that I sprayed

and it's a really lovely
bronzy gold,

which I think works really well
with the black.

And my favourite part is these were
from the Chateau gardens, I believe,

so it's quite nice to have

a little bit of the chateau there
at the wedding.

And we've been with her and she's

into the project, learning

lots of new skills along the way.

It's not perfect.
That's my first attempt,

but I think they will look really
impressive when they're up.

I can't wait to see what Lexie's
been up to because this particular

project is very close to my heart

and there was just so much work
to do.

I can't believe that the project's
coming to an end, really.

There's still bits and pieces
that I think I'll add to it,

but, overall, I've achieved so much
in such a short space of time.

And to see what little money
you need to transform a space...

It hasn't been
a really extravagant project,

but I think it's got
quite an extravagant feel to it.

Is it a comfy speakeasy?
