[Legend of Fuyao]

[Episode 55]

What is that up ahead?

That's the restricted area in Little Phoenix Chamber.

I've never been in there.

The veterans of the palace said that it's guarded by the Phoenix of Flames.

The origins of Xuanji Kingdom's royal family are concealed in there.

Who is that?

It's a petal.

It's just as pretty as you are.

We...

We should go look elsewhere.

Doctor Zong!

Doctor Zong, you...

Do you have a lady you like?

I spent years studying medicine.

I've never considered romantic relationships.

Doctor Zong, you should start considering it now.

Sometimes... the right person is right in front of us.

Isn't that so?

Why don't we head back?

Ingot, go open that door.

The family tree of the royal Feng family.

Ingot, look at these holes.

There must be gadgets in there.

If we take what's on top of it...

the concealed weapons will fire.

Go in and sabotage the weapons first.

You said that there are just a few who trained at Qiongcang.

Since this person takes orders from Feng Xuan...

he must be a descendant of the royal Xuanji family.

If our guess is correct

we just need to seek out the record of names in Little Phoenix Chamber

to find a clue or two.

[Feng Qi, husband: Yu Heng] [Feng Xuan, husband: Huan Rui]

This glimmer means... she's dead.

[Feng Wu Ming]

Feng Qi was Feng Xuan's sister.

She passed away when she was 24.

Yu Heng was her husband.

He's still alive.

But who's Feng Wu Ming?

Why does her phoenix look different from everyone else's?

Is she alive or dead?

The situation at Purple Phoenix River may be much more serious than it seems.

Just say it.

The amount of Xuanji's gold ore and the lava from Purple Phoenix River

are closely related.

Now the amount of gold ore is dwindling

as the bottom of Purple Phoenix River doesn't have as much lava as before.

At this rate...

the lava in Purple Phoenix River may only last one year.

Have you inspected it carefully?

I've been there three times.

I saw it for myself, it is as I said.

Purple Phoenix River is the divine miracle that created Xuanji Kingdom.

How can it be affected by us mortals?

Perhaps the changes are just temporary.

Or perhaps, you're overthinking it.

I took my men to Purple Phoenix River yesterday

for the third time.

It was clear that the level of lava in the river keeps going down.

I've never seen anything like it.

I'm afraid that we're really going to be in trouble this time.

Do you know the consequences of your assumption?

Purple Phoenix River is Xuanji Kingdom's lifeline.

Once the river dries up, I'm afraid all of the underground city will collapse

and fall to ruins.

Before that happens, should anyone learn of this matter

all the people and living things will be in great panic.

Listen carefully.

I don't care if the people panic.

The Tang family has always been loyal to the kingdom.

You're the most trusted subjects of the royal family.

You must know what...

I'm really concerned about, don't you?

I understand.

I don't just live for myself.

I don't even live just for Xuanji Kingdom.

My health and well-being affect the survival

of Xuanji and the five kingdoms.

As neither of my daughters have displayed

any special divine sign of the phoenix...

If I fall ill and don't recover...

I'm afraid that Xuanji Kingdom will really be doomed.

Divine Physician Zong Yue was right.

I'm not at all ill.

I was harmed by villains.

Look into it.

You must find the person who has been poisoning me secretly.

I want to know what they're after!

Yes.

Doctor Zong's treatment is already taking effect.

- Why don't we-- - Doctor Zong?

Who is Doctor Zong?

He's the Divine Physician of the five kingdoms

that Crown Prince Wu Ji brought with him.

If we were to say that Crown Prince Wu Ji doesn't have a motive...

would you believe it?

Since he has his own interests at heart

we can't trust him completely.

Those two are unwanted guests.

Monitor them closely for me.

Report to me immediately if they take action.

Yes!

Who did you take to Purple Phoenix River this time?

They're all guards from Leading Phoenix Chamber

who can be trusted with the secret.

Report their names to the Inner Court.

Those who undertake great responsibility should be rewarded handsomely.

Yes!

Leave now.

Tell me...

Will he notice something amiss?

Forget it.

Even if he does, what could he do about it?

At the moment, there's only one way to resolve this crisis.

You... should get this done properly.

I, Fo Lian, sincerely ask for your help.

What's the favor you wish to ask of me?

Don't worry.

I already found a way to tackle Fu Yao.

Mentor, please bestow me with the power of the Bewitching Charm.

She'll become your servant soon.

And I'll get the power and authority I want.

What you want, what I desire...

We'll get our wishes soon enough.

Miss Fu Yao.

You need not worry.

I just came to see you as requested.

Miss Fu Yao, please come with me to meet an old friend.

Is Princess Fo Lian your mistress?

Forget it.

You've made it very clear that you know about my identity...

You're threatening me into seeing her.

I wouldn't dare do so.

It's just because my mistress can't move around freely.

She can only invite you over.

Speaking of which, I haven't seen her for quite some time.

Please lead the way.

This way, please.

Eldest Princess.

Have a seat.

Your Highness, we haven't attended to you since you arrived.

Today, I brought you some rare treasures and jade.

Keep the ones you like.

Why isn't Doctor Zong around?

Eldest Princess.

Are you here to see me or Zong Yue?

If I say that I'm only here to visit Your Highness because of Doctor Zong

would that displease you?

It depends on whether our conversation is enjoyable.

Crown Prince Wu Ji, indeed.

You do take everything into account.

What would you like to talk about?

I heard that you had an aunt called Feng Qi.

Who did you hear that from?

Is it true?

If you already know, why ask me?

Are you trying to get me to walk into your trap?

Or are you trying to plot against me?

Your mother isn't ill.

She was poisoned.

Didn't you know?

Crown Prince, what are you implying?

Do you think I intend to harm her?

This is Xuanji Kingdom!

Even if you're Crown Prince of Tianquan

you should show some respect!

Xuanji's domestic affairs aren't to be interfered with by some outsider!

Don't get so worked up.

If you're so easily annoyed and short-tempered...

how will you find the culprit who poisoned the queen?

How will you inherit the throne?

If you really want what's best for Xuanji Kingdom

you should calm down and have a cup of tea.

I'm well aware of just how the Purple Phoenix River

affects Xuanji Kingdom's survival.

Even in my position, I don't wish for Purple Phoenix River to change.

We're in the same boat for this matter.

What are you trying to say?

I hope that you can work with me to seek the truth

to ensure the stability of Purple Phoenix River.

Xuanji and the five kingdoms are all tied to the Imperial City.

If one falls, so will the others.

Since you say that, I believe you.

Whoever poisoned the queen must be after the throne.

You don't want someone else seizing it, do you?

You should give it some thought then.

Who would stoop to such means, irregardless of the consequences

to poison the queen at such a time?

It must be that bitch.

Fu Yao, you're finally here.

I've been waiting.

Jing Fan, it's been a long time.

How have you been?

I wonder how many more temples you've prayed in lately.

How many people have you saved?

Fu Yao, you still bear a grudge against me.

It was all my fault back then.

Although I was deceived by Zhangsun Ping Rong

and acted against my will

I know that I was wrong.

It was still my mistake.

I asked you here today so that I could apologize for it.

Apologize?

You make it sound so simple.

If I hadn't been so lucky then, I'd be in the netherworld by now.

You might've had to burn paper money so I could hear your apology.

I know that it's hard to make up for what I did to you.

But look, although I'm the second princess of Xuanji

I'm imprisoned in my own quarters.

Who knows if I'll live or die?

When I think back to the past...

and remember how genuinely you treated me

while I made that stupid mistake...

I really--

I'm really filled with remorse.

Fu Yao, I hope that you'll accept this as an apology.

Why should I accept anything from you?

In Xuanji Kingdom, each royal descendant has his or her own jade scepter.

The jade scepter not only represents his or her status

but also connects to the vital force and energy.

This is my phoenix jade scepter.

I'd like to give it to you.

It means that I'm entrusting all of myself to your hands.

I don't dare to ask for your forgiveness.

But by doing this, I can show you my sincerity.

It can lessen my guilt a bit.

I don't believe you're saying all this just to apologize.

Apart from asking for your forgiveness...

I have no other intention.

I know you still doubt me.

That's only natural.

Actually, since Wu Ji arrived in the palace

I guessed that "Doctor Zong Yue" might actually be you in disguise.

But I waited until today to disturb you.

I was just worried that you'd misunderstand

and think that I still care about Wu Ji.

You must accept it!

I really want to apologize!

Since you say that...

I'll just accept this jade scepter.

I've heard your apology.

That's enough.

Fu Yao!

Don't worry.

I'll never tell anyone that you're disguised as Zong Yue.

Now that my wish is fulfilled

I'll just pray for the well-being of all lives in Xuanji

and guide the suffering souls to paradise with my prayers.

Fo Lian sought me out yesterday

and insisted on giving this to me.

She said that each royal descendant has a unique jade scepter.

She handed it over sincerely for me to do as I see fit.

She's telling the truth.

In Xuanji Kingdom, if she gives you her royal scepter

it means that she has placed her dignity and status entirely at your disposal.

What are you going to do with it?

How about this?

Let's pawn this.

We'll get Ingot some berries with the money.

That's a good idea.

It should be worth quite a lot.

What did you find in Little Phoenix Chamber?

Feng Xuan has an older sister, Feng Qi.

A year before Feng Xuan succeeded the throne

she suddenly died.

What was her cause of death?

It was very ambiguous.

Rumor has it...

that Feng Qi and Feng Xuan were very close.

The year Feng Qi passed away

Feng Xuan almost became a nun so as to pray for her sister

to release her from purgatory.

I finally understood where Fo Lian learned her tricks.

Like mother, like daughter.

Feng Xuan was the only one who could succeed the throne

after Feng Qi died, of course.

The officials begged her to take the throne.

It's said that she had Feng Qi buried in the highest grandeur.

She also took care of the funeral rituals.

It's just that...

This glimmer means... that she's dead.

But who's Feng Wu Ming?

Why does her phoenix look different from everyone else's?

Is she alive or dead?

The records in Little Phoenix Chamber indicate that Feng Qi had a child.

She's called Feng Wu Ming.

But Feng Wu Ming may not be her real name.

What's strange is, on their family tree...

she wasn't marked dead or alive.

What does that mean?

On the family tree

each descendant has an emblem and they are all marked.

The deceased and the living are marked differently.

But they're always marked as either dead or alive.

Only Feng Wu Ming was marked as neither dead or alive.

Perhaps it's another clue?

We can look into it, it should shed some light on the matter.

What I can be sure of now...

is that it isn't Feng Jing Zhi who poisoned Feng Xuan.

The most possible culprit is--

Fo Lian.

Exactly.

She has the endurance and patience.

In terms of scheming and craftiness, she's more skilled than Feng Jing Zhi.

Otherwise, she wouldn't have spent years creating

a false image of a lotus-like saintess.

If you run into her again, you must take great caution.

How did the remarkably intelligent Crown Prince Wu Ji...

ever get engaged to a girl like her?

You're right.

Why did I get engaged to her then?

It all started by the lotus pond in the palace.

This...

This place is...

I came to Xuanji Kingdom with my father when I was a child.

I saw that Xuanji was unlike any of the other kingdoms

so I wandered around the palace in excitement.

I stumbled upon this place by chance.

What was this place like back then?

It was a glistening pond then. As far as your eyes could see...

there were lotuses and leaves everywhere.

It was like 10 miles of lotuses, all in full blossom.

Who are you?

That little girl was covered in bruises.

She was so small and young.

That's where I first met her.

She was covered in bruises then.

She was so thin and frail.

She was so young and small.

But she had eyes that could look right into your mind.

I thought she was just some palace maid's child.

I saw that she had been bullied and took pity on her.

Let's go.

Higher!

From then on, whenever I had time

I'd come visit her at this lotus pond.

I'd come and play with her.

So... that little girl was Fo Lian?

Back then, who she was didn't matter to me.

I just wanted her to suffer less and to look after her as much as I could.

In the end, she didn't tell you about her name or identity?

She was just like a newborn.

She didn't know much about herself or this world.

I was also curious about how she was raised to be...

so oblivious to her surroundings.

"Now that I have seen you, my worries have ceased."

"Now that I have seen you, my worries have ceased."

"While the storm rages on, the roosters continue crowing."

"While the storm rages on, the roosters continue crowing."

"Now that I have seen you, my heart is healed."

"Now that I have seen you, my heart is healed."

She was very bright.

Over time, I taught her to read and write.

She was so clever that...

she memorized the entire Book of Odes in just a few days.

How could I not grow fond of her?

You're Crown Prince of Tianquan.

It mustn't have been hard to help her.

Of course I wanted to help her.

I saw how badly bruised she was every day.

I asked her who hurt her but she wouldn't tell me.

Then I told her that I'd take her away from Xuanji

to the Imperial City of Tianquan.

She wasn't willing to go?

She was.

I waited a long time for her right there.

But she didn't show up.

Lass!

Lass! Where are you?

I'm going home!

Lass?

Lass!

Come with me!

I'm going home!

I had to head home then.

I had to leave.

So you feel like you abandoned her.

I told her again and again...

that I would protect her and look after her.

I said that I wouldn't let her live in fear anymore.

I promised to keep her safe.

But I broke my promise.

Did you ever hear from her again?

After that, I left to train at Qiongcang.

It wasn't until five years ago that Saintess Fo Lian was made known

all across the five kingdoms.

She traveled everywhere to help others.

She had a great reputation.

Just when I thought that perhaps it might be her...

I received a letter from Fo Lian and the Leaf of Spiritual Elixir.

This is the Leaf of Spiritual Elixir.

Just treat it as a token of our friendship.

No one has ever given me a gift.

What she wrote in the letter was

my exact encounter with the girl in the palace of Xuanji.

If it really was as she wrote, then she is the girl I met back then.

Fo Lian must've mentioned in the letter that you promised to protect her.

Silly.

I already told you... if Feng Jing Zhi inherits the throne

and Fo Lian remains single

she will have to be killed.

She mentioned that in her letter too.

That's why she wanted me to marry her into Tianquan soon.

To save her.

So you kept that promise in mind all this time.

That's why you agreed to marry her.

Yes.

There's one thing I can't figure out.

Marriage is such an important matter.

Judging by your personality, why would you be persuaded by a letter?

Marriage or romance isn't exactly essential for me.

If a marriage could save a childhood friend, why not do it?

There was no other reason?

All right.

You guessed right.

My other motive was to win Xuanji Kingdom over.

I never thought that I'd fall in love with anyone.

I never thought that anyone could sway me from years of strategic planning.

Only you could do that.

So... are you certain that Fo Lian is the little girl you met?

Tang Yi Zhong of Xuanji greets Crown Prince Wu Ji

and Tiansha's Vassal King of Han.

Get up first.

Thank you, Crown Prince.

I had the honor of meeting the real Divine Physician

at the qualifying match for the Gold of Tiansha.

So when I saw you at Ruichen Palace

I knew right away that you'd assumed a fake identity.

Just call me Fu Yao.

Miss Fu Yao, you're very daring.

Who else knows about this?

Your Highness, fret not.

Although Leading Phoenix Chamber is the queen's personal unit

Miss Fu Yao's identity is of no concern to Xuanji Kingdom.

I won't reveal it to anyone.

What brings you here?

I was born and raised to serve in Leading Phoenix Chamber.

I've handled all sorts of confidential matters for the royal family of Xuanji.

It can be said that I'm one of the very few who has access

to the royal family's confidential documents.

I know what you two are investigating.

And?

The hierarchy in the palace of Xuanji is very strict.

Even the historical records in Little Phoenix Chamber have been altered.

If you wish to find out the truth

you'll have to speak to the people involved.

Who are you referring to?

Look for a man called Feng Wu.

Why are you helping us?

For Xuanji Kingdom's sake.

Is the medication for Ruichen Palace ready?

It was just decocted.

We're delivering it now.

Leave it to me.

Yes.

You're doing everything personally to win Her Majesty over.

You must have a favor to ask for?

Exactly.

So?

Are you going to ask to be married to Crown Prince Wu Ji soon?

Crown Prince Wu Ji may be nice, but he's not my type.

I have someone else in mind.

I'll have to make my mother consent to it, no matter what.

Crown Prince Wu Ji is highly skilled.

I tried to assassinate him several times, but to no avail.

Is it that you can't kill him

or that you don't want to kill him?

I neither wish to kill him, nor am I capable.

Shut up.

You're just trying to use him to unravel the truth

behind that matter, aren't you?

It has been so many years...

Don't you understand how I feel about you?

Listen.

The one person in this world who understands you best, cares about you

and loves you dearly...

I'm afraid I'm the only one.

Do you understand?

I'm the only one who can give you the answer you seek!

Everyone who knows the truth is dead!

They're all dead!

I had them all killed!

You can only obey me.

As long as you wish to live...

As long as you wish to find out where Feng Qi and her daughter are

you--

You can only obey my command!

Understood.

You'll have to keep poisoning me.

There's no need to add too much.

Just make me look frail.

No one must find out that...

their Queen of Xuanji doesn't carry the divine sign of the phoenix.

No one can find out about Purple Phoenix River either...

That it's drying up all because of me.

Who is that?

I've embarrassed myself before Your Highness.

Please forgive me.

Please get up.

Thank you, Your Highness.

Since you recognize us, we won't beat around the bush.

We have some questions about the royal family of Xuanji

that we wish to ask you.

Have a seat first.

This way, please.

Your Highness, please ask away.

To look into the truth...

we snuck into Little Phoenix Chamber.

In the records of the royal family tree

the former Queen, Feng Yu, had two daughters and four sons.

The two daughters are Feng Qi and Feng Xuan.

This means that one of them had the divine sign of the phoenix

to succeed the throne.

Isn't that right?

It is indeed so.

Please have some tea.

Is Feng Xuan the one?

It's hard to say for sure.

You only know that Feng Qi and Feng Xuan are sisters.

But do you know that they're identical twins?

They were born less than an hour apart.

Therefore, it's hard to tell

which of them had the divine sign of the phoenix.

Could it be possible that neither of them carried the sign?

That has never happened in the past.

Purple Phoenix River is tied to the spirituality

of the royal family's divine sign of the phoenix.

Therefore, one of the royal descendants must have the divine sign of the phoenix.

Whoever it may be, only one child in each generation has it.

That's why there has never been a dispute for Xuanji's inheritance.

The divine sign of the phoenix can't be seen or felt.

Who can be the judge of it?

They have to look to Purple Phoenix River for guidance.

Qualified female members of the royal family

will be taken to Purple Phoenix River after they're born.

As long as she's the chosen queen, there's bound to be a divine sighting.

The human mind may err, but not destiny.

Isn't that right, Commandery Prince Wu?

You're right.

Because Feng Xuan and Feng Qi were twins

they had to be sent to Purple Phoenix River together

according to Xuanji tradition.

It had never happened before.

If they were taken there at the same time

wasn't it even harder to determine who had the divine sign of the phoenix?

So there was no divine sighting at Purple Phoenix River then.

My mother was very worried.

She was afraid it would cause a huge panic if people found out.

However, there weren't any disturbances in Xuanji then.

Is it possible that both sisters carry the divine sign?

No, my mother was worried that everyone would be in great panic

so she claimed that as twins

both sisters reinforce and counteract with each other.

That's why the divine sign of the phoenix didn't appear.

The divine sign of the phoenix would only appear on their daughters

after the twin sisters got married and had their own children.

They would have to wait till then to find out

which of them was the rightful eldest princess.

But no one could've expected...

that the same thing would happen again in 20 years.

Quickly!

It really was a coincidence.

Feng Xuan and Feng Qi conceived around the same time

and even gave birth on the same day.

They each gave birth to a child at the same time.

Push harder!

It's said that when Feng Xuan gave birth to her daughter

her daughter was born with a lotus in her mouth.

It was an extremely auspicious sign.

It was then that there was a divine sighting at Purple Phoenix River.

So everyone believed that the child born with the lotus

carried the divine sign of the phoenix.

Hence, Feng Xuan was anointed as the eldest princess because of it.

Soon afterwards, Feng Qi died abruptly.

Feng Xuan naturally inherited the throne.

Who exactly was the child born with a lotus in her mouth?
