[narrator] Many tales
have been told of Africa.

But this is our story,

-a drama set in the heart
of our world.

Experienced as we live
and breathe it.

-[thunder rumbling]
-Our land faced devastation.

[traditional music playing]

All our lives were at risk.

Each of us faced tragedy.

Now, we're fighting
for those who survive.

This is the next chapter
in our story

in a place
they call Serengeti.

[elephant trumpeting]

It's an inescapable truth
that all we love
must one day be lost.

The great elephant herds
have gathered to mourn
the death of Nalla's sister.

But her sister's baby Kadogo
is missing.

If he survived,
Nalla will find him.

The wind carries clues
for those who can read them.

[trumpets]

[trumpets]

[trumpets]

Little Kadogo stayed
with his mother,
even to the end.

Nalla comforts him as best
she can.

As will her family.

[trumpeting]

Nalla couldn't save
her sister, but she will
save Kadogo

and raise him as her own.

For now, relief brings rest.

He will sleep easy secure
in his family's comforting
embrace.

[caws]

Our land once lost
to the floods is showing
signs of renewal.

The jackals Shavu and Shaba

are among the new arrivals.

For them, what was a tragedy
is now an opportunity.

Here, survival means
no life ever goes to waste.

But they have competition...

and vultures aren't shy
of confrontation.

[squawks]

Neither are jackals.

There's more than enough
to go around.

But that's not the point.

[caws]

Quarrelling is a jackal's
favorite pastime.

[squawks]

When you're preoccupied,

it's easy to forget
what you came for.

And here, it's wise
to eat quickly.

Hyenas, too, will never miss
a feast.

On her own,
she's little threat.

But she's no longer
on her own.

[hyenas chittering]

The floods brought Zalika's
clan back together.

Together, they're
a formidable enemy.

-[all chittering]
-[squeals]

[barks]

When the battle can't be won.

There's no shame in retreat.

Anyway, they have more
than themselves
to worry about.

Shavu and Shaba
are new parents

with all that entails.

[squeaks]

[sniffs]

Like all parents before,
they must somehow turn

the innocent
into the independent.

For now, Shavu devotes
herself to their care.

While Shaba stands guard.

It's a partnership
that will last a lifetime.

The bond between the land
and the living moves
ever onwards.

After the deluge,
rebirth brings renewal.

And with it, hope.

[monkeys chattering]

But hope can seed ambition.

Bakari is at the center
of a growing feud.

Cheka, his favorite female
has been very affectionate
lately.

Ever since Bakari enjoyed
the attentions of her rival.

Bibi is no ordinary rival.

She was once
the lead female...

and was deposed by Cheka

when Bakari took over
the troop.

[squeaks]

Cheka mustn't overreact.

But she can give a warning.

While Bakari basks
in the attention,

the rivalry between
the females can only grow.

Kali, survivor of grief
and exile is now back

in the safety of the pride.

But Sephu
is still bothering her.

[roaring]

[snarling]

There's only two ways
to appease Sephu.

The other is with a meal.

[monkeys squeaking]

Bakari's duty is to face
the threat.

Being leader means
being last to safety.

Facing the unthinkable...

and seeming brave
when scared.

[snarls]

[roars]

For the young and afraid,
there's just one place to be.

Bakari has led his troop
out of reach.

[grunts]

[snarls]

And Kali into danger.

Now, it's Kali who's
on the back foot.

[grunts]

Today, effort wasn't rewarded.

Courage was.

Although Bakari has seen
off one problem,

he has a far bigger one
brewing.

Meanwhile,
our land's renewal continues.

[roars]

The leopard cubs are growing
and learning fast.

It's time to be weaned off
mother's milk.

[roars]

She just has to find something
to tempt them.

[cub roars]

A hare would be perfect.

And a chance to show them
how to catch one too.

Or perhaps not.

How hard can it be?

[whimpers]

[cub roars]

[whimpers]

[mongoose chirping]

It's not just mongoose
that hide in termite mounds,

so do hares.

-A second chance for mother.
-[roars]

For once, the cubs
did something right.

[snarls]

For Nzui, it's her first taste
of meat.

[snarls]

But Dada isn't so sure.

Their mother lets them go
at their own pace.

But there'll be some
catching up to do.

[squawks]

All mothers face
the same dilemma.

When to indulge
and when to be tough.

Aisha favors discipline,

she needs to with Duma.

[whimpers]

He's ready to take
on anything.

Well, almost anything.

And he's always ready
to lead his sisters astray.

[all whimpering]

Quiet concentration
is what's needed.

[whimpers]

They aren't learning
fast enough.

By now they should be
a help, not a hindrance.

But maybe there's
a second chance.

They've learned stealth.

Now, speed.

Today's lesson is complete.

And for cheetahs,
tough love pays.

Shaba is standing guard.

While Shavu enjoys
the early days of innocence.

Jackals work as a team.

[pants]

Something's up.

Or so their senses tell them.

While they follow their nose
and ears,

their pups hole up
from prying eyes.

[whimpers]

Their senses rarely
fail them.

[roaring]

Pilfering requires
different skills.

Aisha knows the ways
of jackals.

Her cubs have yet to learn.

-Give them a warning.
-[snarls]

-Show you mean it.
-[snarls]

[barks]

Then head for cover.

For Duma, another chance
to be brave.

It's a promising start,

-[whimpers]
-but that was just
the first round.

Jackals play the long game.

She'll let him learn
the hard way.

While Dumo was busy
being brave,

the rest have had his share.

Another hard-earned lesson.

One last stand for Duma.

And just a scrap
for all his troubles.

Shaba and Shavu get
what they came for.

Jackals usually do.

Life is blossoming

as our land repairs
what the floods destroyed.

For Kali, a brief moment
of calm.

Sephu is sleeping.

A chance to reconnect
with those she's closest to.

[roars]

But feeding the family
is a never ending task.

It's only a morsel,
hardly enough even
for her cubs.

Everyone wants a share.

But there are too many
mouths to feed.

Now it's a free for all.

[roaring]

One Kali will rise above.

Sephu's awake
and demanding his share.

[all roaring]

[Sephu roars]

And not just settle.

Enough is enough.

The pride is breaking
itself apart.

Let them fight amongst
themselves.

Kali and her closest
companions won't be
coming back.

Only the bold embrace change.

And our land is changing
faster than ever.

But repair and renewal
take time.

[hyenas chittering]

Like all of us, hyenas
have their part to play.

Theirs is to return
what's died to the land.

It may be their calling.

But for the elephants,
it's sacrilege.

[elephants trumpeting]

-[elephants trumpeting]
-[hyenas chittering]

Nalla has brought her family
back to pay their last
respects.

[squeaking]

Among them is little Kadogo.

To Nalla, his mother
was her closest companion.

To Kadogo, she was everything.

Kadogo's life
has changed forever.

But he'll have a whole
extended family to care
for him.

Being an elephant means
never walking alone.

[squeaks]

For the hyenas,

there's always another meal.

And Zalika knows just
where to find it.

[chittering]

[snarls]

[cub roars]

Where hyenas have cunning,
leopards have strength.

[roars]

[chittering]

Some meals challenge
even the strongest.

[chittering]

Not quite what she was after.

But where that came from,

there may be more.

[roars]

[roars]

She'll let her cubs
feed first,

[snarls]

-[chitters]
-which is just what Zalika
was waiting for.

-A scrap lost...
-[snarls]

is a lesson learned.

As our land heals,
new life emerges.

The termites are swarming.

A rare treat for the baboons.

A feast for Bakari...

and Cheka too.

While their parents indulge,

the youngsters
entertain themselves.

But Cheka's rival,
Bibi, has her sights
on a bigger prize.

To restore the position
she previously held.

Now even Cheka's baby
ranks higher than she does.

[squeaks]

Bibi continues to ingratiate
herself to Bakari.

She won't let anyone
get in the way.

It's brazen,

but what can Cheka do.

Is she about to lose Bakari?

For Aisha and her cubs,
lessons continue.

Duma is as keen as ever.

But has something changed?

[grunts]

It's what Duma
was waiting for.

A chance to get involved.

[grunts]

Team work at its best.

From being a liability.
The cubs are now an asset.

Aisha's training is finally
yielding results.

As her cubs grow along
with their appetites,

she'll need all the help
they can give.

Among the elephants,
there's one who's made
the journey to independence.

But family ties have brought
him back.

[trumpets]

Tembo, Nalla's son
left the family
when he came of age.

Alone, he contemplates
his aunt's remains.

He finds his own way
to accept her passing.

[trumpets]

It's another part
of his past

he can now let go.

We can't always choose
what we leave behind.

The past has a way
of returning to haunt us.

The feared black maned males
are back.

The flood took away
their land.

Now they're after
the Pridelands.

First, they face
the treacherous river.

And those who lurk within.

[growls]

[grunts]

Even the fiercest fear
the black maned males.

And there are plenty more
who should be afraid.

[squeaking]

Despite appearances,
Cheka's family is in crisis.

Her rival Bibi appears
to have been accepted
by Bakari.

So when she offers to babysit,
Cheka can't object.

Her son can.

[growls]

Innocent eyes see
what others can't.

Her show of motherly care
is an act.

[chittering]

But truth will out.

No one likes being exposed.

Especially by an upstart.

For Bakari, attacking his son
is the ultimate violation.

[all clamoring]

A mistake
that can't be undone.

Cheka's position
now seems secure.

But forced out,
Bibi may be more
dangerous than ever.

After the rains, army ants
are on the march.

[squeaks, chitters]

Everyone gets out
of their way.

It's not the time for a nap.

[grunts]

When their way is blocked.
All they have to do is bite.

[snarls]

And keep biting.

[snarls]

This army stops
for no one.

They'll march on
until they find a home.

With their own young
to care for.

They'll need somewhere safe
and secure.

The jackals' burrow
is perfect.

[whimpers]

But first, they must evict
the residents.

[whimpers]

They just have to make life
as uncomfortable as they can.

And an army can make life
very uncomfortable indeed.

When acquiring a home,
ants always win.

Shavu and Shaba
have returned.

Instead of a greeting,

there's a deathly silence.

A dreadful sound
for any parent.

The pups must be out
there somewhere.

[whimpers]

Vulnerable and alone.

[whimpers]

In this vast wilderness,
how will they ever find them?

We all have our own battles
to fight.

When Kali led her loyal band
to find a new life,

they left on empty stomachs.

With a hungry family to feed,

Kali is never too proud
to scavenge.

Kali must make sure it's safe.

There's no such thing
as a free meal.

[growls]

Her cubs stay back.

Whoever felled this giant
may still be out there.

Kali keeps watch.

She's also being watched.
