We made this naomhÛg together -

myself and a good friend,
Liam Holden.

The frame is all made of wood.

There's red deal, white deal, oak,

and there's willow.

And we got that from this area,
just up the road.

And then it's covered
in a rough canvas.

You have to grow up with them,
as we did in this area.

They were very much in use when
I was young around here.

Going out fishing for lobsters, crabs
and crawfish.

And I've seen a lot of fishing
and work done with the naomhÛg.

For centuries, people would sail from
West Kerry to A CoruÃ’a in Spain

and walk the Camino from there.

And we're doing our own
version of that.

We are spending six weeks each year
over three years...

..travelling 2500km...

..to Santiago de Compostela.

St. James was a very important figure
in Christianity.

For the past millennium, people have
been coming from all around Europe

to do this walk.

But for us, there was no way to do it
from Ireland but to go by sea.

And we're doing it in a naomhÛg.

It's an endurance test.

It's a test for the mind.

I wouldn't have been able for this
20 years ago.

I wouldn't have had the patience.

A few days before I left, I was
up the hills by Brandon Creek

looking out at the sea.

I asked myself, "Am I crazy crossing
the ocean in a tiny naomhÛg?"

But then Saint Brendan and
Tim Severin did journeys like this,

and for my family, and for those
who come after us,

it will be something to look back on.

People might say we're
out of our minds

undertaking this type of journey.

And you need some of that

because if you're sensible
all the time,

sure, you'd never do anything!

We left D˙n Laoghaire this morning
and are now heading for Wicklow.

We'll reach Rosslare in three days.

Then we'll wait for a southerly
or westerly wind

before making our way
across to Wales.

The plan from day one was to do this
as freely as possible.

So the tent is as important
as the naomhÛg.

The naomhÛg is for travelling;
the tent is for sleeping.

Today the pain is right across there.

We had planned to set off for Wales
at 4 o'clock tomorrow.

But the weather isn't good

so we could end up staying here
until Wednesday.

But we're in top form
and in no big rush.

This always happens as the weather
is the master.

I have to mind my fingers
for playing music!

It will be very different tonight
because we won't be near the coast.

It won't be my first time
without seeing land

but this is completely different.

The naomhÛg is down there
waiting for us

and, fingers crossed, within an hour,
we'll be on board setting off.

And it's great; we're tired
of being on land.

Ready for the day!

This is the longest journey any of us
have ever done in a naomhÛg.

And we're following our ancestors -

those who did this before us
long ago.

The Romans back in AD 400 referred
to our ancestors as "Scoti".

And we're paying homage to the boats
that our ancestors created

to sail so well at sea.

You get a lot of time to yourself.

We go long periods of time
without speaking

with nothing but the sound
of the oars and the sea.

And that gives us some time alone

where everyone has a chance
to reflect.

And that's part and parcel
of the pilgrimage.

That's also a form of praying.

A tiny crescent of the moon
was visible.

When the sun set, the moon rose.

And even though it was only a tiny
crescent, it was great to see.

And the sky was full of stars.

And the crescent appeared
for about an hour or so

and the sea was nice and serene.

And that gives you
great encouragement.

-You're doing great, fair play.
-We're not right yet.

Well, there were a few occasions
out there

when we were chatting about
how totally exhausted we were...

..that we didn't care what happened
at that point.

Everyone felt the same way.

Sometimes you question
whether you can go on.

But then someone will say,

"Keep going. Just give it
another stroke of the oar."

And there's always someone there
to encourage you.

We're dead.

Not recommended
doing this ever again!

I have no backside left!

It's gone!

Do you need a change of trousers?

-We need a change of backsides!
-And skin.

It's great that we managed
to do this,

but we have a tougher crossing
ahead of us from England to France.

Hopefully, we'll be up for it.

We know what's ahead of us.

We met the lads in Newquay.

And now they'll have a break
for a day or two.

With the help of God, they'll start
making their way to France

on Sunday or Monday.

That's the plan as far as I know,
but that could all change.

I'm really looking forward
to tomorrow.

I hope that I'll sleep with
all the anticipation.

If I get a few hours, I'll be happy.
I'll be up at 5 in the morning.

Sure once I get out to sea,
I'll be high!

High on music, on spirit, on energy
and everything; I hope so anyway!

We're a little apprehensive,

but after crossing the Irish Sea,
we know what's ahead of us.

Although, this time,
the distance is greater.

Hopefully, in three or four days,
we'll be over in France.

We went on a big walk
a few months before we left home.

It was a 12-hour hike over the hills,
up Mount Brandon

all the way from Brandon Creek
to Annascaul.

And we did it because we knew
we'd have some tough days at sea.

And I think it prepared us mentally
for this journey as well.

We've done 30 miles now
and we've 60 to go.

A lot of cargo ships will pass by
during the night.

And when it's dark,
it's hard to stay out of the way

when you're going 2-3 knots.

But the weather forecast for tomorrow
morning is gale force 4 or 5.

So they need to go as far as they can
tonight.

It's another world at sea.
It's full of mystery.

But the sea never befriended
anyone...

..whether it's your first day at sea
or your thousandth.

If you give her the chance,
she will take you.

Not out of malice;
it's just what she does.

And you must always be humble with
the sea, especially in a naomhÛg.

We had a great day.

We're almost halfway across
the English Channel.

We're not far off it.

-That's the worst part over.
-Yeah, it is.

We really wanted to be able to say

that we rowed all the way across
the English Channel.

But then the sea grew dark
and the wind turned against us.

And finding it so hard to get back
on board the yacht scared us

because it became
very, very dangerous.

Then we found out that the weather
had changed.

And we had no choice but to wait
it out until it changed again.

And the naomhÛg was tied onto the
yacht as we had to plough on.

The next thing we knew,
the following morning,

there was Brittany in front of us.

You'll have no trouble
finding a place to moor.

Thank you very much.

Following us are some friends
in a traditional Irish boat.

They're entering L'Aber Wrac'h

That's no problem.

We're disappointed that we didn't get
to do what we had set out to do.

But there was never any bravado
on our part.

The main goal has always been
to do the Camino.

And that's the reason we had
the yacht with us -

in case we needed to go on board.

But it's great to land here.
I'll drink enough wine!

I won't care even if we proceed
by only one foot a day from here!

Bon matin!

Brendan asked me for a place
to pitch their tents.

As I don't live far from the port,

I invited them to stay with me.

These are men of the sea.

Therefore, I trust them.

We're part of the same community.

Holy water.

No, leave it like that.
Don't add water.

I don't think I've ever looked

I love going to sea...

..and I'm not sure why!

I suppose it's in our nature; as it
was for Saint Brendan and Colmcille.

And the voyage of Bran.

They yearned to see other places.

To step out of their own lives...

..and to return with great stories
to tell.

And I suppose that's why
I'm doing it!

The sea is like the human mind.

It can be as rough,

as cruel,

as hostile,

as devious,

as deadly as anything
you'll ever encounter.

So to sit into the naomhÛg
and end up in Brittany,

you learn something about yourself
very quickly

that otherwise might take
a lifetime to learn.

The naomhÛg is here indeed,
thank God!

We finished the first leg of our
Camino here last year

where we met Christoph Eberhardt,

a boat builder who looked after
the naomhÛg over the winter.

I think of myself also as
a bit of an adventurer

or similarly crazy enough
to understand them.

And when I saw them and the boat,

it was clear we'd understand
each other!

It's extraordinary!

How many have rowed
in an ancient boat

from Ireland to Santiago de
Compostela? How many?

It's crazy, in a way!

But you're happy people.

And, as we say in French,
'hats off!'

This winter, I went through things

that I'd never want
to go through again,

but the one thing that kept me going
was the end of May and the Camino.

It's the best thing I ever did.

It's very different this year because
we won't have any big seas to cross.

Now we believe that we can make it.

I can't wait to get on the water!

But Danny is gone praying.

So we have to wait for him!

They're going to Spain in that?!

That's really old!

Every day back at home,
there's always 20 things to do

from cutting the turf
to sowing potatoes.

But when you're out on the Camino,

your mind is very clear.

You don't have to think
about lots of things

except to focus on where you are
heading to the next day.

When you're exhausted and still have
10 miles to go, you can't just stop.

You learn to put up with it

and believe that you can do it.

-Long live France!
-Long live Brittany!

Are the sausages done?

The biggest challenge ahead of us
this year is the Bay of Biscay

and its notoriously dangerous waters.

We have a great plan now
to avoid the Bay of Biscay.

But we still have a long journey
ahead of us south to Bordeaux.

Farewell!

I love going out to sea

because out at sea, everything
is in the present.

And that's been the beauty of this -

no two days are ever the same
out at sea.

The sky is different.

The water is different.
The tide is different.

The wind is different.

Your mind is different.

The person in front of you might be
cranky, or you're cranky,

but then you mellow out
and have a drop of tea.

And you feel better again.

After a rest, everyone is ready
to pull together again.

There's great solace in that.
It's wonderful.

He doesn't believe me!

You need a lot of fortitude
to do a trip like this.

If you're worried about
what others think,

you won't be able for it.

You have to feel completely free
in yourself.

And that way of thinking gives you
the freedom, I suppose.

There was around 150 miles
of coastline and the Bay of Biscay

that couldn't be done
without a support boat.

So we took a different route.

We went down into the estuary
into Bordeaux,

up the river and into the canals.

And it was a wonderful journey.

It's very serene, isn't it?

I thought the canals would be boring

because it would be too easy
without any soul in the water;

without any waves, swells or tides.

But it was the complete opposite.

It's truly incredible.
I find it extraordinary.

In this age of consumerism,

with its lack of community spirit
and friendliness,

this is a breath of fresh air.
Bravo the Irish! Bravo Ireland!

We have to go and look for someone
who has a van

to transport the naomhÛg
100 miles by road to Dax.

This is a blacksmith's forge

and there's a man inside who said
that he might know someone

who would transport the naomhÛg
to the river tomorrow.

We thought something like this
would happen.

We have a week left and we'll get
to San Sebasti·n one way or another.

It worked out very well.

We met this fine, young man
called Harry.

His father had an old Mercedes.

"Oh", we said, "That's the job."

He's nervous about the load
and the police.

He's a bit apprehensive.

But he won't have any problems.
He has the bold Kerrymen around him!

There are seven of us
on this journey:

there's the sea, the weather,
the crew members

and, most importantly of all,
the naomhÛg.

And we're like her servants.

And I would bow down to her
any day of the year.

PoitÃŒn - just what you need
in the morning!

We're saying it's water,
but it's far from it!

It puts life into you.

It's great to hear the sound
of the oars again.

Nothing but the sound and rhythm
of the oars

instead of that damn engine behind!

It's great. I love it.

French poitÃŒn is the business!

It's almost as good
as C˙il Aodha poitÌn!

Sat Nav and those kinds of things
are so helpful.

They're very handy to have.

But there comes a point when you
have to put them aside

and do what feels right
in your heart.

Anytime I come ashore,
I remind myself

that I wouldn't be here if it weren't
for the other three.

I couldn't have done this alone
and I'm grateful to all of them.

This journey has helped me
enormously

because you have to learn
to let a lot of things go.

It teaches you how to row
with the crew you've got.

And that's a lesson you can bring
with you through life.

Well, we've a long journey done
this year.

With blisters on our hands
and scalded by the sun!

But we've reached Pasaia
in the Basque Country.

Fair play to you until May
of next year!

What a place to finish up this year!

But the journey isn't over yet.

We still have to make our way
to Santiago de Compostela

and finish the journey.

I've never been so eager
to get to sea as I am now.

I reckon this year's coastline will
be very different to last year's

because instead of long beaches,

we'll have cliffs and small bays
like we're used to at home.

And hopefully if we run into trouble,

we'll be close enough to a harbour
to row in.

On this voyage, Breand·n Moriarty
was with us from the start,

but he got a full-time job
in the Blasket Centre.

And he asked me what should he do.
And I said "Take it".

So, we were short a man.

And Brendan Begley called me to ask
if Breand·n was coming.

"No", said I.
"Well, I have a man", said he.

What happened, Danny?

The back-up engine fell into
the water.

If there's any kind of storm,
we'll need it...

..but we'll be by the coast.

Ah, he'll get over it.
There's nothing unusual about that.

That's to be expected.

He'll need to get used to it.
Hopefully, he'll get over it.

Glen wasn't faring too well at the
start, but he kept going regardless.

And he's getting stronger and we're
getting on really well as a crew.

But it's very hard when you get tired

and when you see other boats
with their fast engines,

you think: "What on earth
are we doing out here?"

You really get to know someone at sea
because you're reliant on them

reliant on them to come in safely
and everyone understands that.

And with Glen you feel the wildness

and with the wildness comes
the energy and the passion

and this man has passion,
although he's never been at sea

and I believe he'll be great.

I'm joined by a group
that won't go unnoticed

because they're undertaking
a pilgrim route

of the Camino de Santiago that is
quite original, to say the least.

OK then, so this is an appeal

to any of our listeners
who might have an engine.

We're here now for four nights and
it already feels like four months.

But the weather is to improve
in the morning,

so we'll get up at 6am

and skip breakfast.

And we'll go as far as we can

to make up for the days we lost here.

Too-ra-loo...

For us it was a surprise to hear
on the news this morning

about the arrival of a naomhÛg.

So we dropped everything
to come and meet them.

For thousands of years,

there was a very important
communication in this interior sea

connecting the Cantabrian Sea
with the Irish Sea.

But to arrive here in a NaomhÛg,
rowing!

It's truly a historical moment
for us.

Rain! Rain! Rain!

And swelling seas.

We are sick of this place.

I can't wait to get back out to sea.
I have the shakes!

I have the shakes from this place.

It's absolutely lovely!

They're a great loss and it affects
everyone deeply.

But then again, you must remember
that they're looking down on us,

guiding and protecting us.

We've no business out there.

That sea isn't very welcoming.

For us, especially.

A lot has changed in my life
since I started the Camino.

Massive changes.

My brother Se·n - 'John' - died.

I rowed in many a regatta with John.

He was three years older than me.

Here are some of his ashes.

In a way, I feel like John is here
rowing alongside me.

There were 9 of us in the family.
There are only 8 of us now.

That's life.

"We are but dust."

John is ashes.

It's a beautiful morning, thank God.

We've been here for 7 nights.

We're very happy to be
setting off again.

Two weeks ago, we had loads of time.

But we'll do it alright, but we'll
have to row every single day.

Buen Camino! Safe Journey!

That was the most surreal day.

We're exhausted, but we've done work
for tomorrow and the day after.

Because this is as far in as
A CoruÃ’a across the way.

We've made it now.

It feels like I was here only
yesterday. It's brilliant.

It was very tough to come
and join them until now.

We'll finish the journey now

pilgrimage. We were just the crew.

When you consider that boats
like this, covered in cowhide,

sailed as far as Ireland a few
hundred years before Christ...

..and now an ancestor of those boats
- the naomhÛg -

is making the journey back.

The naomhÛg is the star here,
not us.

To the crew of the naomhÛg
and to the people of West Kerry,

a hundred thousand welcomes
to this city!

to a group of pilgrims from Ireland

who honour us with their presence

after navigating the waters
of the Atlantic

to row here in their own boat.

the Camino by sea.

we were born and raised on the coast:

and we, on the edge of the Atlantic.

Regarding "The NaomhÛg of the Tents"
I don't like to look too far ahead

because I'm not a young man
- in years -

but I still have a young mind.

The naomhÛg will be left here
over the winter

and if God grants me the health,
I'll be back again next year

and we'll go around to Finisterre

and we'll head south
along the coast of Portugal

towards Morocco.

If I get as far as Morocco,
I'll be very happy.
