- I'm a writer.

you know, note taking stuff.

- Well I'd love to start
at the very beginning.

Um, where were you born, and when?

- I was born in Slovakia
in October of 1929.

- What was it like there?

- My mother, she worked in a library,

and my father, he was a dentist.

Oh, we had a beautiful
apartment in a very nice

part of town.

And then one day we were forced to leave.

Oh.

"A day without Jews, let
them be sent to the ghettos.

"Good bye Jews."

That's what they would yell.

Oh, it was a horrible time.

We weren't allowed to walk in the streets,

and people would stare.

We had to wear yellow stars of David sewn

on our clothing.

And if we were seen without it,

we would have been shot.

And if I had known what was before us,

I would have rather have been shot

than sent to the camps.

It was 1942, and all the Jewish
girls were being rounded up

for the soldiers at the front.

Papa decided we would
hide in the outhouse.

Oh, it smelled terrible in there.

He said the German soldiers
wouldn't look there,

and I would hide and make myself so small,

and I could hear my heart pound.

But even though I could still
hear the sound of the boots

of the soldiers, the Gestapo,
the Nazis as they came down

the street.

After a few months, they found us,

and we were taken to the camps.

On the first day there, we were tattooed.

And then I knew, we were
no longer human beings.

Animals.

Every day, I would see
75 to 100 people die.

- And um,

what about your family?

Your mother, your father?

- They sacrificed their
lives to keep me safe.

Sacrificed by fire.

My entire family was burned,
and I was hauled away.

- Hauled away?

- To serve the German
military at the front.

I think you understand.

My father was killed.

My family taken from me.

Six million people died.

And I survived.

And I asked God, "Why me?"

And then I realized, God
wanted me to tell my story

so people wouldn't forget.

- I'm so sorry if I made you
talk about anything that...

- Oh, I need to testify.

And as long as God gives me strength,

I will make testimony.

At the camps, there
was a young girl there.

She wrote poems.

Oh, beautiful poems.

Her name was Agnes.

Why do I remember that
after so many years?

Oh.

I'm sure if she survived,
she would have been a writer

just like you.

violent toward each other

in the process of survival.

It seems like the general attitude now is,

"I have my own burdens.

"Why should I help someone
else carry theirs?"

And, worse, we've become desensitized

to other people's pain.
